Could be the gym owner doesn't want artificially swollen muscle men taking snapchats and selfies. Different target audience.
Also there may be insurance issues with letting random "pros" in to train. If they don't do "one days", and Phil comes in and trains and is injured, maybe he's not covered under the same insurance as those who signed all the paperwork. It's not the 70s anymore, where pros just showed up and trained together. This is a small biz, probably struggling to stay afloat - and random person wants to train without insurance, without a membership - it's nice he's a pro, but I don't think Chef Ramsey gets free dinner anywhere he goes because he's a top chef.

Was there ever a situation in which 'anyone' was refused admission for any reason whatsoever?
Back in the day, many local gyms would not allow any type of photography within the confines of the gym, but Gold's did a reversal and encouraged photographers to shoot .... so Weider sent his photographers to Gold's and those photos were seen world wide.
And other photographers followed suit.
A small reason for the success of Gold's as the world wide MECCA.

Fuck 24 hour fitness. I was a member for 12 years, cancelled my membership when I moved out of the area, went back to get 1 workout in and they tried charging me $25 the gym for a day.... To make a long story short, I refused to pay the $25 day fee and talked the "sales rep" into giving me a free week pass. WTF is going on over there that they try charging former members $25 for a day pass??

Well, you can sign up for a free 1 day pass at any 24 hour fitness. When I was visiting another state, I signed up for a 1 day free pass. I don't see why Phil Cheath couldn't do this. Furthermore, the 24 hour fitness I trained at for that 1 free day, charged $20 for any other day you want to train. Thus, Phil had multiple options. I dont understand what the problem was.

It was at midnight, I believe. So marketability wouldn't play into this.

24 hour fitness, as well as every other gym, allows you to train for the day for a price (usually between 10-25 dollars). You can walk into ANY gym in America and train for the day. HOWEVER, they make you sign a release that alleviates them of all responsibility if you get hurt. Thus, they would not let Phil train for the day without signing this release.
So, it has ZERO to do with liability. Something else happened and Phil Cheath is not providing the whole story.
I trained at a 24 hour fitness for the day, as well as other gyms (LA Fitness, Powerhouse, Golds, PF, etc).

Having physique star xyz plug your gym only really works if they cater to a segment you cater to (or they have tons of cross over attraction), you can set up photos, and you can get a lot of press out of it.

unless they're not a BBing gym. Or unless their insurance doesn't cover non-members. Or the owner didn't want someone he didn't know, didn't sign up, did'nt know the rules, with zero accountablity, to use his machines.
It may just be insurance and simple policy.
We all know if Phil blows out a rotator cuff because of anything wrong in this gym, he's suing them until they don't have a pot to piss in. If their insurance doesn't cover "walk-ins who just train without signing up", and they don't offer 1-day signups, then Phil is outta luck here.

They have policies against unknown guests. They won't want to get sued. Their insurance doesn't let people play who aren't covered/associated with program.
Manning is an NFL great, but after getting their autograph, they'd tell him they can't do that.
In my opinion - in this case...

Not only feeling entitled to train for free... but wanting to punish the person who declines it by putting them on social media blast. Goodness knows how intense this got if police were called. This isn't a good thing.

24 hour fitness, as well as every other gym, allows you to train for the day for a price (usually between 10-25 dollars). You can walk into ANY gym in America and train for the day. HOWEVER, they make you sign a release that alleviates them of all responsibility if you get hurt. Thus, they would not let Phil train for the day without signing this release.
So, it has ZERO to do with liability. Something else happened and Phil Cheath is not providing the whole story.
I trained at a 24 hour fitness for the day, as well as other gyms (LA Fitness, Powerhouse, Golds, PF, etc).
Guests are usually only allowed to work out during certain hours. No really early mornings or late at night workouts are allowed so that may be what happened.

I think Renton has a high black population. I knew someone from there years ago.
He made it sound like he went late at night. I know there are rules about no guest workouts after 11pm. I think he may have tried to be like: do you know who I am? Honestly if some big ass dude came into my gym late at night when I'm there alone Insisting I let him work out when it's against the rules, then I would call the cops too. It's very intimidating to be a woman and working late at night

He was so polite and cooperative to the desk staff. He signed the release and tried to pay a guest fee but they refused the money. He must have thanked them 3 times.
I didn't want to bug him because he's a mega-celeb , but I couldn't help but notice what he was doing.

The closing shift at the end of the night (10pm) will drop all cash in a dropsafe and the register will not open again until the morning receptionist opens the cash drawer. They can't sell any retail, drinks or day passes during the graveyard shift. The company hires "shoppers" to make sure graveyard employees don't sell day passes, then pocket the money. No way the 24 hour employees will take a chance that the guest might be a shopper hired by the company.

Not only is 24hr headquarters shocked and mortified the members of that gym were standing there begging for her to let Phil BUY he's day pass even tho Phil's best friend had one for him bc he's a member of that gym he also listed him as a guest on his account. Phil didn't expect anything for free. She also told the cops that she was being threatened by a dangerous black man. So dangerous while he was taking pictures with the fans who were telling her she was wrong for not letting him in after he asked to pay the day free and had a day pass from his friend. Oh and not to mention she decided to stop yelling at phil once she called the cops. I hope she loses her job for making up her own rules and treating Phil like a criminal. A long time ago, local gyms owned by regular folks would cater to IFBB pros by letting them work out for free. They would sometimes let them do a few days and other times would allow them to workout any time they wanted free of charge.
Now, with big name gyms (Equinox, 24-Hr Fitness, Crunch, Planet Fitness etc), no one gets free workouts because of their IFBB status. None of those big chain establishments care whether or not you're a professional bodybuilder or just another juice head.
I feel sorry for Phil. Back in the 80's, he would have been a big hit at any local gym.
