Tale Of The Tape
Samir Bannout
Height: 5'7 (170 cm)
Contest weight: 195 lbs (88 kg)
Notable victories: 1983 Mr. Olympia
Shawn Ray
Height: 5'6 (169 cm) (He's damn liar if he says 5'7...Hi "Sean" :-* )
Contest weight: Between 205-215 Looked his best around 205 (92kg)
Notable victories: 1991 Arnold Classic.
IMO it's closer than I thought it would be. I just assumed Shawn was better but when putting Shawn vs. Samir's best in 1983, I find it hard to find a show where Shawn would be better.
BTW, Shawn did a video recently on the best bodybuilder under 212 and he stated himself that Samir would be the only person he would worry about and I'd have to agree. I actually have Samir edging him but my opinion can be swayed if I see proof. To me, Samir's bdb is just too much for Shawn who has a great bdb in his own right.
Only onstage photos. Offseason means shit. IMO, Shawns best is either 1994 Mr. O or 1996 Mr. O.

Yep. Me too. Never thought I'd think that until I saw pics. Samir was perfect for that show. He should be the standard for classic physique.

Shawn knew his body very well and was a hell of a lot more consistent than Samir ever was I think Samir edges him because of the latspreads although they're close.

Whatever year this was is the best Ray IMO

I believe the battle for the Olympia 1996

Yes. It's why I said at their peak because Shawn destroys him on consistency.
-
Original peaks are round, not flat.
Get over it Wiggs
-
Samir had the better aesthetically pleasing type physique(ala Rory Leidelmeyer and Serge Nubret) but Shawn Ray was definitely a more developed bodybuilder.
-
It is very close but I think Samir is better
Wow, yeah. I had no clue until looking at these pics, how good he actually was that year. Samir beats Sean.
-
It is very close but I think Samir is better
Agreed.
-
Samir gluteus too flat. No homo
-
Tough one Wiggs..........but I`d have to go with Bannout but only in `83 never before or after.
-
83 sammir
mr wes how come sammir could never get back into that shape again?
-
sammir wins it
one of the best backs of all time, beats Shawn on back
-
SR

-
Samir beats Shawn in the BDB, Shawn beats him everywhere else.

That's because in 94 he suffered a car accident which messed him up. Then later he was attacked by neenjas. Tough luck I suppose.
-
It's not even a close call. Samir.
Plus, Samir never donned the hair piece.

shawns a whiney asshole to .

:)
-
Tough one. Samir 83' vs. Shawn 94'.
Certain poses Shawn looked a little off, but Samir looked great in pretty much all of the mandatory poses. Samir has the edge though.
-
shawn ray
-
Shawn Ray never won a show after the 1991 Arnold Classic. And he competed until 2001.
That proves that the 90's was the toughest competition era

He had a lot of gas left in the tank, too

when you see early pic's of them starting out Samir 'skinny'...ray was ahead esp as a teen even tho he was leg heavy early on .
posing both were great posers..
SAMIR looked incredible early 80's ,great lines, shape, conditioning, lat insertions/back for days.good balance top to bottom.88 and on he got too heavy and never regained top form..ray has that advantage over him.
ray ..better muscle bellies'full'over Samir, bigger legs'depending on yr sometimes they were stumpy/chunky looking 'rays hands mm is still one of the best looking ,his back was very good as well, his build was more compact /thicker than Samir who had a aesthetic'when lighter'look and had longer limbs than ray which created that illusion as well..
I say ray due to overall top placing's/yrs in top shape, overall powerful look to build..
-
who past the test of time and looks better now????
-
samir has a better structure and proportions

Good points plus Ray earned more money as a competitive bodybuilder, so that is also in his favor as being better....
Lol classic Getbig wrong answer to the question.
The question was who had a better peak, as in who looked better at their respective one time bests. Not who had the longest and more successful career during their peak years. ::)
Anyhow I say 83 Samir beats anything Ray.
I'll extend going off topic and ask if Dexter 's Olympia winning build is better than anything Shawn offers?

THANKS,,,MY INNER SCHMOE CAME OUT FOR THAT ONE..

Agree he was perfect in the 83 O. His back set the standard.
-
:)
-
Samir's back was sick! Shawn might beat him from the front by a little but not enough to offset Samir's advantage when he turns around. Interesting topic though. Samir best "small" bb ever? Going by that one showing he's hard to beat. Better than Labrada, Ray, Gaspari, etc. Lewis? Always been pretty impressed with what Lewis brings to the table. Dude is sharp as fuck every contest too. Sick wheels
-
:)
BDB on Samir is perfection. Beats all of todays guys including Phil.

There isnt a clip of it anywhere but in the 89 Olympia when he hit a BDB shot it was like an explosion of fibres.
-
:)
Bertil Fox and Mohammed are getting destroyed there
-
Tough one this.
Shaun -- Fuller / Rounder muscle bellies
Great condition, and very consistent
Sammir -- Very aesthetic -- One of the best backs
& back double biceps -- Looked fantastic in 82/83/84
Stood side by side each at their best !!!
Really wouldn't want to call it.
Both Great Physiques yet very different.
-

I was 2nd row when he won the Pittsburg show. Fibers dancing everywhere. That's shit you do not see today.
-

Yeah and when people say Bertil was robbed in 83 I'm like did you see any of the pictures? lol to think he was just 188lbs
-

Damn Samir's lats attach nearly at his waist
-
Damn Samir's lats attach nearly at his waist
Yeah he had a shorter torso and longer legs
-
Ok, next question. Would Haney have won in 84 if Samir showed up in his 83 condition? Did he even defend his title?
-

I think Haney would have , he was just to big at that point. It would be close
-

I was at that show Haney dominated.
-
Ray vs Bannout. Hmmm? Interesting.
I'm leaning towards Shawn Ray... and I'm not sure why.
-
Both are great. I forgot out good Samir was until I saw these pics.
But, give them both the same drugs, and Shawn would still come out on top.
-
It doesn't matter the drugs. What matters is what was. Samir's best vs. Shawn's best.
-

Shawn then by a Placentia, CA mile.

Samir peaked only 1 year (1983). Shawn always came in excellent shape and condition year in and year out. Btw, Samir was MAX 5'6", not 5'7". He was shorter than Tom Platz.
-

So was Shawn's. He doesn't get the respect he deserves.
-
He had a lot of gas left in the tank, too

That pic alone of Shawn at the end of his career imo is better than 1983 Samir.

No he also did a NABBA show where he looked phenomenal but he got second to Kawak. Think it was the NABBA World 1990. May have been his best showing ever.
-
Proof that today's trunks are not needed.
-
At the end of the day Samir has won the Olympia and Shawn never has
-

He also came second to Clairmonte in a NABBA Universe and looked phenomenal there as well, think it was around 93
-

This says absolutely nothing, since variables like era and drugs are way different. In case they grew up in the same era, Shawn would beat Samir in mass and maybe Samir Shawn in symmetry.
-
SAMIR 1990
-
shawn never could win the big one, and only won one pro show
shit there are a few pros that were more successful than him. shawn was good at running his mouth and hyping himself up .
-
SAMIR 1990
8)...looks like statue..
-
SAMIR 1990
Thanks for posting
He looks very good
Mr. O winning calibre Physique again.
-
Samir at his peak.
-
From a classical physique standpoint, I'd have to say Samir.
But I much prefer prime Ray's build. He always appeared like one strong and powerful "little" dude. And he was.
Shawn was a very impressive squatter and presser. Great weight trainer. Made guys like Branch look like retarded know-nothings with spastic inclinations.
Ray was methodical, precise and technical. Like a machine. His squatting was beautiful.
-
Branch Warren is the Bostin Lloyd of training.

even on the 'flex'magazine show shawn who was playing with weights for tv but still great form and reps.

Stop saying this nonsense lol you don't know how tall he was unless YOU measured him yourself. I've seen Samir listed as 5'8" and 5'7" I'll go with the 5'7" unless YOU have something other than your opinion. And he's not looking shorter than Tom Platz here
And BTW Samir looks fantastic in 1982 and could have won that show as well.
Both Shawn and Samir have won only 2 pro contests , but Samir is a Mr Olympia and Shawn's not
