Title: Your most bizarre workout..more stupid the better. This should be a sticky, Ron.
Post by: Dr Dutch on August 19, 2016, 10:17:15 AM
Many years ago I was really inspired by Arnolds calf-story.  You know, with the cut off trousers and hours and hours of training them.

So on a free saturday, I did about 100 sets of standing calf raises to failure and beyond during the day. Plus extreme stretching.  That night they cramped up on me so badly I spent half the night stretching on the stairs.

I literally could not walk for a day or two, and remained sore for two weeks. Even wearing socks hurt.
I don't recall if I measured them before and after.

Please post your own workout-from-hell  :-X

Last time I tried training calves directly they got sore like that, and as a bonus I got a pulmonary embolism that went up my leg into my lung and hospitalized me for 3 days.

Calves of Wolf are my future, it seems..

Back in the day after watching dorian yates blood and guts video me and my workout buddy decided to copy dorian yates workout set for set because after all if you want to look like dorian you have to train like dorian right, well we end up severely overtrained with no gains.

Well a blood clot, then its a PE once it hits your lungs. I hit legs really hard that day and it must have triggered the blood clot to break loose i guess.

I didn't feel ill at all, had just worked out that day too. I actually went to the doctor because my right calf was so damn sore I thought I had cellulitis (had it before same spot)- then they run tests and bam

They were more alarmed that my creatine-k blood level was over 7000, most people are in low hundos.  Never found out what that was all about

This sounds a little bit unlikely, my friend....wasn't it a pneumothorax ?

Don't remember where I got it from, definitely from a Weider mag, but some 25 yrs ago I did 'the Arnold Arm Routine, .....ended up with a tennis elbow and zero gains.

Still hate Weider for that.
Don't hate Arnold of course, he's our Jesus/Mohammed/Buddha orvwhatever dude... ???

But hate Weider and his offspring.....duh !

The problem with so much work for calves isn't that you will grow the calves or not, it's that if you ever rupture your Achilles at an age after say 35 years old, its all but over. Micro tears in the Achilles are for life. There are many ex marathon runners who now walk around limping...Check out the numbers Red Sox DH David Ortiz is putting up this year. One of his best seasons of all time. Yet he's retiring at the end of the year at age 40. Said he would love to play a couple more years but can't do it because of his feet/Achilles...The guy is basically giving up 25 million a year any team would have paid him to play another year because his feet are fucked. And fucked for life...

I think that's about one of the toughest things in sports.....knowing that you are very talented at a young age, but 'ordered' to be holding back for years really...takes a very good coach to keep a dude like this on line.

Around 1990 or thereabouts I read about Tom Platz and his legendary leg workouts, so I decided to try some high rep squats.  I warmed up well, then squatted 225 for 55 reps.  It was the most physically demanding thing I've ever done in my life.  The entire gym was watching and cheering me on.  That was the entire leg workout.  I was sore for about 10 days afterward.  My legs did grow from that.

As a young teenager I did countless random reps and sets of bicep curls with a small adjustable dumbbell set my parent had just bought me, because I didn't really know what I was doing.

My biceps and especially bicep tendon was brutally sore and I couldn't straighten my arms for a week. I was walking around with my arms bent at 90 degrees like a robot.

this may be true

I've been training my tris every 48 hrs and they are noticeably bigger

everything is actually bigger as I've gained a little over 5 kilo in 2 weeks but it seems my tris have grown the most which is exactly what I'm trying to do, i.e. spot gain mostly on my arms and pecs BABY

Shot (3) cc's of Sustanon 250 into EACH calf. That's 1.5 grams of Sustanon in one serving! Three different locations on each calf. Then proceeded to do something like 20 sets x 25 reps with a reasonably light weight for calves. Later that day I could not walk and could barley stand up without assistance.  Ed Connors wanted me to go to the hospital but when I told him exactly what I had done he said, "...Jesus Tom what were you thinking. I guess you won't do that again..."

I did do it again.

Back when I was around 15, I had read Arnold's Bodybuilding For Men. In it he talked about how he would do a high number of sets. So, I figured if I did more than he did I could get bigger. I was doing 100 plus of sets per body part. And that was a different body part per day. Sometimes it would take 4 hours or more the finish a workout. I kept this up for about a year and a half.

Several years back I experimented with super slow chin-ups on the assisted chin-up machine.  Each rep was 10 seconds (5 seconds positive, 5 seconds negative)  Was grueling as fuck for my back and my biceps.  But holy fuck, the strength I developed after just 6 weeks of doing these was incredible.  After doing the super slow chin-ups for a month and a half, regular chin-ups were a breeze.

First time back doing squats coming back off a back injury I worked up to 315 for a single and ended up doing 185 for 25 reps . Laid on the floor like in the magazines for 10 minutes lol that was fun set though and I don't regret it. I stopped doing stupid squats after a while though.  Those feet together high bar squats with anything over 2 plates is just asking for trouble as a natural.

Later after delving inthe the peds I trained with light weights and tons of volume, didn't even coutn reps or sets just got the biggest pump possible and then left. If it took 20 minutes then so be it. I also cut rest times down to absolute minimum and the result was some decent fat loss and cardio from that, since I can't really run or do normal cardio due to my screwed up knee.

I was starting at the new gym few years back, and after complete chest, triceps and biceps workout I found this machine, and it seem to be good idea to test it...

Well, it wasn't very good idea. In fact it was one of the worst ideas ever, because after few minutes it start to feel odd, and when I stopped, I could not move my hands because they were pumped to the max and beyond. I sit in the locker room quite some time but the pump went only harder and harder. In the shower I couldn't reach my hair to wash it, so jump in my clothes and hurried home. My wife have to feed me because my arms were useless, but I thought it would be better tomorrow. It was worse, because whole upper body was sore as hell from training and from that enormous pump. I couldn't go to work because I have no hands to work with, so I stay home for 3 days  ;D :'(

Slow rep jerking off while doing crunches.  Don't laugh.  You can do infinity crunches if you're close to cumming.  The trick is not to overstimulate.  You have to find the sweet spot.  It feels really good.

I guess that got kinda creepy.

Always though squatting ass to grass was the way to go, even heavy

now my left hip is screwed; even after 6 months of no squatting it still gets extremely inflamed if I do any weighted lower body movements; probably a torn labrum or something that needs to be addressed medically. but who has time for that.

LOL.  Remember the Ironman R-O-M system (was it called that?)?  Sort of early to mid '90s...

One exercise for 'mid-range? (or somesuch)'
One for 'stretch'
One for 'peak contraction'

Or some such thing...  ::)

When i was about 13, a few weeks after getting my first home bench, I bought my first Flex magazine (no homo) and later proceeded to follow a workout routine called "10 sets of 10" on flat bench.  I couldn't lift my arms over my head for several days, the pain was intense, I thought back later, wondering if I may have torn my pecs.

I did the Cybergenics workouts to the letter and also diet.  From what I can recall, lots of carb depletion and workouts with no energy and emphasizing negatives and shit.

Was a total waste of time and money, except that it taught me the valuable life lesson: it's all scams.  I still believe that to this day.

Not really. But I was a typical stubborn stupid teenager. Figuring I'll grow faster as I got older. I didn't start making any sort of improvement until the sets were lowered. The more I lowered them, the better. Until eventually I got to what I thought was a sweet spot. Which was just a fraction of what it was.

But this experience pretty much leaves me immune to the bullshit some people spout about overtraining being impossible.

everything is actually bigger as I've gained a little over 5 kilo in 2 weeks but it seems my tris have grown the most which is exactly what I'm trying to do, i.e. spot gain mostly on my arms and pecs BABY

Then imagine how much bigger they would be if you trained them every 12 hours? How about every six hours? Basile speculated how much gains could be made if you trained 8 hours everyday seven days a week.

Why not? As long as you eat enough and get a good nights sleep.

So how many chins could you do before and then after the month of SS training? And how many can you do now after several more years of training?

The problem with these kinds of workouts, and with Heavy Duty and dogcrapp and stuff, is that although they may actually deliver, they are not fun to do. The best workout is the one you won't quit...

I got a set of dumbells from my dad when I was 15, about 10lbs I think they were. I literally didn't know any exercise apart from bicep curls. I would do them everyday. I worked up to doing 600 reps with them, in sets of 50-100. Then I would drink a liter of milk and goto bed. The pump was intense and it actually did make my arms grow.
