Title: Underrated Tim Belknap
Post by: Danimal77 on October 29, 2016, 12:52:47 AM
5'4" and 245 pound (at his heaviest) diabetic Tim Belknap. Not a pretty physique, but freaky for such a small guy. He either came in light or HUGE. He was either striated and shredded or wasn't. He had some of the best leg development ever. He was a cut mass monster and a cross between Tom Platz, Rich Gaspari and Dorian.

Terrible pecs. Narrow shoulders. Weak delts. Underwhelming arms. V-taper sucked. Back was probably awful.

Agree.  He looks like a mutant butt-plug.  He was awful back then and looking back now he is still awful.  Drugs can make anyone bigger and stronger but not better.

Columbu and Padilla are worlds better than this guy.

He was diabetic. He used insulin because of his diabetes.

Underrated? BAAAHAAAAA.....we could care less about him in the 80's. BUT....he was diabetic and used insulin...hence the box/wide waste physique. He was the first to show how things were going to come. Too bad he didn't use more and combine it with high amounts of STH...BOOM 1994 would have magically appeared in 1982.

But back in the day people notices his "gut" was bigger than most in person. Thick waist. I believe Belknap is one of the reason's people looked at Insulin as a muscle builder...

was gonna say he looked dense and conditioned but nowhere near 245 and would have probably had to look very overweight to get to that.

Seems home blood glucose meters became widely available ,around 1981.So it sees at this time,it became practical to play with insulin levels, while conveniently monitoring blood glucose levels for hypoglycemia.

Home glucose monitoring was demonstrated to improve glycemic control of type 1 diabetes in the late 1970s, and the first meters were marketed for home use around 1981. The two models initially dominant in North America in the 1980s were the Glucometer, introduced in November 1981,whose trademark is owned by Bayer and the Accu-chek meter (by Roche). Consequently, these brand names have become synonymous with the generic product to many health care professionals.

Was a fan of his in the early 80's.
Always wondered if he used insulin to his advantage to gain the size he had, altho too stocky to ever win any major comp. Horrible pecs, no taper...I guess he was the beginning of the mass monsters?

Actually, the last picture is the first and first is the last. The last pic was published in m+f july 1981 with him weighing around 230 and the first pic is when he got ripped at under 200 to compete in the 1981 America in the light heavies later in 1981 where he beat Rory. He then beat Lance Dreyer the heavyweight winner for the overall.

When he first came on the scene he was of course huge and getting a lot of publicity but I don't think anyone thought of as much more than hype until he won the overall Mr. America. The day he won the American beating the likes of Rory he brought a great physique and was shredded. If I remember right he was compared to Ron Tueful. I actually had the opportunity to meet him when I worked for Muscle Digest.

Was he ok? I went to a place called Lindberg  nutrition in the late 80s and he was there for a Weider seminar, he was real dick to everyone there, especially those there to meet him! He was so bad that the next weekend Weider  had a rep out there giving free product away to anyone that said they were there the previous weekend.

Its definitely true. Amazing what you remember from 35 years ago.  That last pic posted was the first picture of him in Muscle and Fitness. No one had previously looked like that including the swollen over ripe tomato face.   He got ripped and lost 30 lbs to compete as a light heavy at the Mr America that year.

They published some pics as his weight dropped to show the transformation but everyone expected him to compete in the heavyweight.

Apparently when he was like 14 he was 90 lbs and used to get beat up at school by the boys and girls. The girls used to stuff their dirty gym socks in his mouth for fun. This was also covered in Muscle and Fitness in 81.  I guess that would make anyone have a rotten disposition.

I met Tim once ... a day or two before he won the 1981 Mr. America title.

A mutual friend asked me if I would drive himself and Tim to the grocery store to do some last minute shopping.

During that drive and shopping experience Tim impressed me as a humble and quiet individual who was determined to win the Mr. A title.

OH yea! The main items purchased were those very dry puffed wheat/ rice cakes. A good number of them. And other minor stuff that I cam't recall.

Definitely not long enough to form a valid opinion ... but I can assure you that he was never UNDER-RATED.

And I can also assure you that insulin got a boost of interest in 1981 which may or may not have been due to Tim's involvement.
