In the late 1970's and early 1980's the major news networks were reporting scientist predicting another ice age... now it is global warming. They don't know SHIT.
-
We are going to end up like superman planet kryptonite scientists will warn up about the destruction of the earth from global warming and the government will ignore it, maybe we can send some of our babies in space to start the human race on mars or something.

We'll. That should put an end to it.

Feels like -21 in Chicago right now

cold is predicted as the winters get colder and summers hotter. LMAO. is hotter in the southern hemisphere? I wonder
polar vortex is oscillating which is due to warm air going north, same thing as last year, it will only worsen.

Of course it will. Just like the ice would be gone from the Arctic in 2014 according to Al Gore. Oh wait...

All of their "data" is based on computer models and temperature estimates.
The Earth gets hot, the Earth gets cold. It always has. There is fuck-all that human beings can do about it.

You talking about the artic or antartic, they behave quite differently as one has land underneath the other does not.
Who cares what Al Gore thinks? I don't. Sure there are alarmists, that doesn't mean the whole concept is fraudulent. Science is the antithesis to politics, it deals in facts.

Post a summery of the article instead of a link you lazy biatch

Climate change happens via global warming, climate change meaning alerations in the extreme of hot and cold, global warming is real but guys like gore have damaged pre cautionary actions by blowing the effects way out of proportion and doomsdaying for personal gain.

People's interpretations are skewed, if a drug repeatedly passes a double blind showing efficacy no one's opinion on the matter is required, it's fact, proven.
C02 is a greenhouse gas, that's a fact, there are many others, methane is much worse. To deny this basic premise is akin to saying gravity is up for debate. Now how much, the effects etc are debatable to a degree. The problem now is that it's going to fast, never mind it's be hotter or colder, the climate is heating up to fast, faster than we have ever recorded.
Tech needs to outpace gas on a financial and convenience factor, the earth isn't going to melt. The problem is the speed is causing a lot of problems in many ecosystems, we may be able to solve the problems as they come but they will require tons of effort and ingenuity.
This is a complex issue, so local events can cause confusion. If it's not true we really know nothing about the climate at all which I couldn't fathom, we have rocket ships that can dock space stations supporting human life and operate machines on Mars.

Enough with your far right political bullshit rhetoric. This is a bodybuilding site. Go run for office or just shut the fuck up already about it. We know. You are a right wing, capitalistic, religious, gun happy American who doesn't believe in science. Good for fucking you.

Every time someone points out that there are some politics involved you seek refuge in some long winded missive that avoids this reality. Here's a radical idea: man up and admit that this is somewhat political and should be treated with at least some skepticism.

Science deals in theories. Also, much of the funding for their research comes from, you guessed it, politicians.

Can it. I post not nearly as much as others. 43 years of talking bodybuilding and it hasn't changed much inn the last 43 years with the exception of GH and insulin. I've forgotten more than you'll ever know so if I post a political piece on the G&O once in a while then don't fucking click on the post and if you see a political thread on the G&O, move on to the next thread. Fuck off or I'll slap the cum out of your mouth and stuff you back up in your mother's pussy.

Never mind, don't answer that because I don't care.

I now know who you are. I'm unimpressed but I'll stop shit talking you like a newb. Back on topic...
I don't think it makes someone a retard to suggest that the bodybuilding talk here has cooled off a bit. I think at this point everyone knows that the "sport" is all genes and gear. The top pros are blocky dwarfs with GH guts and zero personality. People are over it, what's to talk about.

Every time someone points out that there are some politics involved you seek refuge in some long winded missive that avoids this reality. Here's a radical idea: man up and admit that this is somewhat political and should be treated with at least some skepticism.
The science is not political, global warming is a fact.
The solutions and way we go about it involves geopolitics. I treat it with full on skepticism, I am a skeptic at heart. Complicated things require study, why is only the northern hemisphere cooling right now? there is a simple answer that is literally being shown in the video posted. The artic has no land underneath, warm air can displace the polar vortex (this exists, I know vortex seems sciency) which pushes it south, it causes cold air from the artic to travel south as the ice melts in the north. Denying it is like denying the jet stream, el nino etc it's a studied issue and will get worse the more the artic thins.
It wouldn't oscillate unless the artic was warming, it's simply how this works.
-

It does, but you seem to think a theory means unknown. Gravity is a theory, a theory is a framework that best explains the facts. there are facts, the globe heating is a fact, it has for a decade straight, the mechanism is the theory which explains this fact.
Dude the whole world agrees, every scientific community, it's not an American thing, you are not the center of the universe. The US is a plutocracy and reminds me of the hunger games.
If you are trolling fine, but at least try to listen to what I am saying. Politics suck, people lie I get it. Facts don't.
The theory of evolution is simply a theory to describe the facts seen, that is, animals that outcompete others pass on their genetic material, why there is so much diversity, why animals are adapted to their environments etc. these are facts that evolution explains and allows us to make predictions.
Your fear of science as you use a computer is baffling.
-

I think this is an important point.
Also, even if we all accepted the idea that man made global warming is going to kill us all. How do we prove that taxing and regulating the shit out of the United States is going to solve problem? I'd rather not live my life being robbed of my money, regulated out of a job, and riding a fucking bicycle everywhere unless there was some proof that all this will make a meaningful difference.

You just keep saying the same shit over and over again and hurling insults at people. I'm not sure how you extrapolate that I'm afraid of science and that I think the whole world centers around me based on my posts. I do think, however, that you are oversimplifying the point of view of the people who disagree with you. Probably because that is much easier to do than proving that you are right. This is a complex issue. Not just the cause but also the solution. You don't like the United States? Fantastic!, stay the fuck away from it. You think everyone that has a little skepticism about this topic is an idiot? Great!, sit back and feel good about how smart you are.

Completely agree, the answer must come from a private business that makes it easier to choose non-gas alternatives. It simply has to be better for it to work, taxing people and giving more money to an inept government is not the answer.

Skepticism about facts makes people idiotic yes, skepticism about political strategies etc is perfectly fine. it's not a small denial to deny global warming, it's patently ignorant, it's not up for debate, not even one bit. The problem is the speed, that's it.
You are simply doing what you charge me of, claiming I don't like the states (in my argument it's science) over one claim.

The same tired leftist argument...."it's not up for debate". Completely ignoring the data, and and arguments that have been taking place for many years on this topic. Making no attempt to prove you are correct, just declaring the discussion over. I've got news for you, that's not how science works. You don't just declare something a fact, slam the books shut and stop questioning it. Science is the constant questioning of everything we think we know. Asking why, how, why not. Thinking, analyzing, debating, testing. Scientists, as brilliant as they are, don't know everything. New information frequently comes to light that takes scientific consensus and turns it on it's head.

It's both fun and scary to see what the average joe — who likely only took a science course in high school - thinks re: scientific theories.
"It's cold, therefore global warming is a lie!" is about as intelligent a statement as "The ground seems mostly flat, so the theory of a round earth is a lie!"
There's no debating that the earth is warming. Is that warming primarily caused by humans and our activities? Can we do anything to stop it? Should we? Those are questions that are, to different degrees, still open.
If we can improve the health of the planet (e.g. by not dumping toxic chemicals in rivers) then we - humans, not Americans - owe it to ourselves and to our species to do so. It doesn't mean we should bankrupt ourselves or impose taxes to allow polluters to pollute.

No no no. Don't pay attention to actual recorded temperatures, what's important is the computer models.
I'm telling you, the planet is about to catch on fire...any minute now. Extinction level shit. We're all gonna die.
-
Lol, shortly after my last post I hit the 'news' tab on my iPhone. CNN headline "Extinction crisis is worse than you think".
-
So then, are the icecaps not melting? Thank goodness! I was really worried about this. And now I must worry if the snow we've had here in Portland these past few days is a harbinger of a future freeze. Oh wait; I'm 72 years old. Chances are none of this will happen in my lifetime or that of my current offspring.

LOL who is hurling insults?
it's not up for debate, the last decade was the hottest on record and each year was hotter than the next. This is a fact, not up for debate, scientists don't argue facts, you are mixing up interpretation with facts. There are 8 planets, why there are only eight and not 15 is debatable.
If you prove something you don't need to go over it again. The globe is heating, basic fact. A time's article (politics) is not science.
Science has no agenda, you think newton thought of gravity based on mass for some tax free money or something?

Coach go and do something with your life, where does it get you posting about politics on a fucking internet forum all the time? Your a fucking loser, i bet you molest little boys in your spare time you sick piece of shit.

This is a good post.
You are so blinded by hatred you can't see that this is my point lol.
He literally re-hashed (no offense to avxo, he is spot on) what I said (because it is logical).
whats the point of even counterpointing me if you aren't actually reading what I am saying or having an open mind? To make yourself feel good? truth matters more than feelings.

I use to think you were trolling, but since you melted and changed accounts multiple times I have concluded you are actually as deluded as I suspected.
This is a day Joe lol.
let's reframe it into concepts you are use to working with, if someone has a bad day at the gym in terms of lifts but has been gradually gaining strength does that mean they haven't gotten stronger?

1. Last time I changed accounts was eight years ago, Two years after Gore said were all going die.
2. Are we dead yet? No, are we a lighter in the wallet because of the "Global Warming" (or is climate change?) yes. Does this mean I am dismissing science? Depends on where you get your info from. If you don't agree with the lefts "science" then I guess that means all science other than that, is dismissed. No matter what science says, again, NOTHING will happen in the next five lifetimes. It's all bullshit and a moot point.

You know nothing about science in general or climate science in particular and you aren't qualified to make this assertion. You see "conspiracies" everywhere because your political taskmasters want you to.
A few decades back, you may very well have been protesting bans of CFCs and claiming that we don't really know if there's actually a hole forming in the ozone layer. Again, because your taskmasters would have told you so.
You exemplify the dangers of an education system that doesn't teach children the basic tenets of science and the basics of the scientific approach. Not only are you unable to understand what the science actually says, you fancy yourself qualified to dismiss it based on nonsense like "well, if the climate was warming why is this shaping up to be the coldest winter in the last decade?"

Not sure where this insult is in that post. I criticized your argument (if you can call it that), I did not criticize you.
You think I haven't really read your posts, I feel the same way about you not reading or understanding mine. I think you are projecting other people's arguments onto me.
I still think it's naive to say that science has no agenda and politics play no role, especially as it relates to this issue.
Here's an idea, I'm going to live my life. When global warming destroys the planet I want you to come to Getbig and post "I told you so" right before we all die.

Oh stop. I'm not a climate scientist and neither is anyone on here (that I know of) but what I do know is, if it looks bullshit, smells like bullshit, more times than not....its bullshit. It's a money grab. We're not going to die of "Global warming" anytime soon unless I overdose on Melatonin and a couple bottles of wine in August in my back yard in Palm Springs.

Boston had a pile of snow sitting in its harbor well into July of this year (man made).
Not a peep from anyone.

No more Rancho mirage?
I never had a place in Rancho. I just said if Obama moved there it's too close to me.
-
I never had a place in Rancho. I just said if Obama moved there it's too close to me.
Ahh
-
Oh stop.
You first.
I'm not a climate scientist and neither is anyone on here (that I know of)[...]
One doesn't need to be a climate scientist to grok the basics of the theory and examine the predictions the theory makes against the facts we're observing. The facts suggest - very strongly - that the climate is warming. That doesn't mean that winters can't be harsh or that they will only get milder, nor does it mean that Alaska will become the next hit tropical destination.
[...] but what I do know is, if it looks bullshit, smells like bullshit, more times than not....its bullshit.
People called bullshit when scientific theories did away with the concept of the luminuferous aether.
People called bullshit when Tesla proposed the brushless electric motor.
People called bullshit when George Zweig proposed quarks.
I could go on, but suffice it to say that people that were a whole lot smarter than you were fooled into thinking something was bullshit.
By the way, physicists keep asking for money to built bigger and bigger atom-smashing machines. Something about finding smaller and smaller particles. Sounds like bullshit too, doesn't it?
It's a money grab.
Perhaps, although it's unclear what motive climate scientists, in aggregate, have to publish bogus research. Are we supposed to believe that they're all of similar political persuasion and playing the long con, so that that, a few years down the line, the zeitgeist of the day will be such as to cause politicians to demand that factories install soot filters, people drive SMART cars, and our homes are powered by love? Really!?
So let's not worry about that. Let's just assume you're right, and this is, indeed, a money grab. Does that, somehow, imply that it is the theory of global warming itself that is incorrect?
We're not going to die of "Global warming" anytime soon unless I overdose on Melatonin and a couple bottles of wine in August in my back yard in Palm Springs.
How do you know we aren't going to die of "Global warming" anytime soon. You just told us you're not a climate scientist, and now you're proceeding to talk about the climate with inimitable certainty.
Look, nobody is saying that tomorrow we'll wake to find the average temperature to be a toasty 110 degrees. But the fact that the climate has been warming is not in dispute.
We can debate what the role, if any, humans play. We can debate whether all or part of the trend we are observing can be accounted for by the natural cycle of the climate. We can debate whether it may be good for us if it the average temperature was a little higher. We can debate whether we should all ride on those stupid electric skateboards. We can even debate whether to install catalysts in cows.
But we cannot debate facts and the facts are that there has been an observable, statistically significant warming trend in the earth's climate.

Al called me and was troubled that the earth seemed cooler.
I told him to stop sticking his head in the freezer.
He complied and requested I promote more human farting along with the cows, to warm things up
-
It was freezing here for most of last week, but now it is warming up. ;D

How many ice ages have been documented? Multiple. What usually precedes an ice age? A warming/heating of the earth temperatures. The earth's climates have a self regulating mechanism that prevents it from straying too far either way. So, in essence, if there really is going to be global warming, judging by what has happened in the past, this period of increased overall temperatures WILL be followed by a similar cooling off period. And if the retraction is severe enough, it will bring about another ice age.
See, the reason I posted the picture of the mounds of snow in Boston harbor is because most folks have no idea HOW FUCKING DIFFICULT is to get rid of ice. In order for a mini ice-age to get going all it takes is back to back high snowfall winters coupled with relatively cool summers. A few years back, the passes around Mt Rainier had to be closed due to the amount of snow accumulated during the winter. The snow layer was stacked so high than even by mid summer it was still 10 feet tall. By the end of the summer, most of the snow was gone, but had it survived the summer, and had the following winter been another snowmageddon, it could've seriously affected the regions climate, bringing it down a few degrees and, most likely kick-starting a localized mini-ice age. And it does spread.

By the way, this was Chinook pass in July of 2011:

1. you still melted and said you weren't coming back like a crybaby narcissist. Al Gore is a politician, again why are you confusing opinion and fact?
2. No, we won't die from it, that's not the point though. There is no left/right science, this is your issue. You only think of things in terms of politics, life isn't like this. There are actually people who think for themselves, are honest, persistent and care about truth above all else. Things are already happening, the coldness in the north is from ice melting in the artic. We are in the 6th mass extinction event on earth, many species are dying rapidly from what we are doing. It appears you only care about yourself and your ilk.

You are correct, the earth does cycle, this is dependent on many variables, the sun's output, the earths orbit, species migration, ocean currents etc etc The problem is that we are altering earth's atmospheric composition rapidly, more so than before. This is the issue, how rapid we are altering things. The permafrost has never melted (might want to double check), we can induce a runaway greenhouse effect.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clathrate_gun_hypothesis
This can occur again, it likely will as it has in the past, but the speed is the issue we are seeing species dying left and right, in line with the past. It appears we are doing it by dumping massive amounts of C02 into the atmosphere.
What sense does it make to continue with non-renewables? it's illogical, it won't work by definition. We have to smarten up and not be reactionary. This doesn't mean driving flintstones cars but investing in alt sources of energy which could supplant coal etc. it has to be better.
Colonizing mars seems idiotic, but if an asteroid wiped out the earth humans as a species are gone, we have to spread out, it's seems silly but the logic is sound, same with this shit regarding earth, we have but one.

Here is the thing.
The climatologists and meterologists cannot even get the weather prediction right for next Tuesday, why the hell would anyone believe anything anyone says.
The world has a system of it's own and will evolve in some form whether we want it to or not.
In other words the earth is estimated to be approx 5 billions years old, humans are just a speck on the beach of time. the earth was here long before us and will be here long after us, just like the dinosaurs and super hebrew aliens from Niburu before us

Look, I'm not a scientist, I'm just a weather observer with his own weather station who ACTUALLY records and analyzes the data my Davis spits out. I've had the darn thing for about 12 years now and I am not in a position to say that I've noticed a trend upward... just yet (temperature-wise). I honestly believe that the earth overall temperature is indeed rising, but it's the how much and who is at fault that our opinions take different routes. I also know that there is a lot of money involved in the issue and I would not completely rule out some of the data being cooked to show what it's really not.
I am of the opinion that fossil fuels ought to be left where they are at this point. Not because their highly-contaminant nature mind you, but because I believe this country's survival depends solely on being able to science the shit out of alternative energies and making them easily available and cheap for everyone to use and abuse. My apologies for the geo-political ending.
That and fuck the permafrost.

The daily weather predictions and the long term effects of climate change are not the same science. For example, if the ice caps are melting, this is not something that can be discovered within a week. This science compares decades and not weeks to determine if there they indicate climate change.

Yours is a one of the most intelligent Getbig posts on this subject I've been witness to. You've clearly given this considerable consideration. In my global travels, I've personally seen that the U.S. lags in the science of exploring alternative energy sources.

Not yet and probably not in your lifetime. Your remarks suggest you don't give a crap about the future. This is the "me" generation after all and you seem to fit right in with its philosophy.

Isn't this apparently the warmest year in recorded history?

But weather is not climate, so even if you observed a trend it would be meaningless, for example now the north is cold due to oscillation of the polar vortex, while the north is cold the south is on fire, how could a weather station be of any help except in unison with others?
I agree with your last point, but I do think it's our actions driving the warming.
-
Isn't this apparently the warmest year in recorded history?
yes but as coach pointed out, it's snowing somewhere, warm equals no snow.
-
I agree with your last point, but I do think it's our actions NASA/NOAA modifying data, to fit an agenda, that's driving the warming.

Portland schools did just that apparently. There nothing I could find supporting a similar action in the West Linn School District, which is my local district. Oregon is very sensitive to freedom of speech issues. It is interesting no one mentioned freedom of speech rights in conjunction with Portland School District's decision.

If you say so. What you "fixed" doesn't follow in my opinion. The First Amendment "allows" freedom of speech. Oregon and other states sometimes interpret what constitutes freedom of Speech. In this case, the right to peacefully assemble.
You could rightly argue that these assemblies have not been peaceful. The question might be who instituted the violence. Some say the police did.

Obama admin fired top scientist to advance climate change plans
Sensational title, alas it turns out this is but an unsubstantiated allegation by Rep. Lamar Smith who, in the wake of accusing hundreds (if not thousands) of career civil servants and respected academics, isn't exactly credible.
The body of the article dispenses with the clickbait title and says that it is, indeed, just an allegation that Dr. Metting was removed for office to for being "too forthright" with Congress.
One wonders why Rep. Smith just hasn't called Dr. Metting before the committee again. After all, fired or not, he can still testify, and can be subpoenaed if he won't come willingly. Although, one would imagine that, if he was indeed fired, he'd be itching to testify.

You aren't even close, Prime. Go look up the leading countries for renewable electricity production and we lag only China, and that's only because China uses more hydropower (that is- they have dammed more rivers). We invented the solar cell, btw. We also invented and installed the world's first offshore wind turbine facility.
The list goes on. We lead the world in alternative energy research and development. I worked for Standard Oil in the 80's on the first mass produced flexible solar cell. I also worked on nuclear fusion at a Department of Energy laser fusion facility.
We don't lag anybody...
-
We lag several other countries in the percentage of our power produced via renewables vs others
So "We don't lag anybody" is an idiotic statement from a getbigger thats worked on solar cells and nuclear fusion.

This is like saying 'no one can predict exactly which way a rock pool eddie will whorl, so why would you believe anyone could tell you when the tide will come in?'
