So I stopped leg training 15 months ago to start cycling.
Today was first day back doing a deadlift. Managed 165kgs. Any thoughts on this as a starting base? Did reps at 155kgs after.

why deadlift in the first place?
-
that is a very good question
for decades people asked "why deadlift?" and there still hasnt been an answer
nobody knows when the deadlift craze started

Says the weak little man I bet your favorite exercise is leg extensions.
-
why deadlift in the first place?
I wish you convinced me of that in the 1980's :'(
I blew my low back out big time doing heavy deads.
I can see some possible benefit in back thickness doing controlled form pulls from lower knee ht in a rack.

that is correct

it is impossible to hurt yourself on the deadlift or any exercise - ever!!! if you have perfect form every time!!! (which nobody has)
-
Why bother?
-
exactly.
my gym is full of small weak guys who do deadlifts and it doesnt do shit for them. they spend more time getting ready for deads than i do my whole workout.

If you blew out your back that was your fault, there are only 3 reasons why you would get injured doing deadlifts, bad form, lifting a weight that you cant handle or trying for one more rep after your muscle is fatigued, if you avoid these 3 things you will never get injured doing deadlifts.
-
they cannot be avoided.

That's the biggest myth since girls saying they don't fart.

OP keep it up, bro.
heavy deadlifts are damn good exercise. I always finish with 180 kg 10-15 reps. I dont go below 8 reps and i focus on good form.
my whole body has become bigger from squats and deadlifts big time. i do recommend. :)
squats are king exercise imo.

i have hurt my back few times. it was always when attempting to go heavier. so decided to stick with 4 plates for last set and that has been ok for more than a year.

but it's true ...95% of bodybuilders are clueless about form anyway

And they'll get big with leg extensions and other seated comfy moves?

You can put your back out sneezing,so if you think your perfect form will save you....

You seem to advocate just doing high reps with moderate poundage's and stop before you get fatigued.
Is that what you suggest?

they would get big with pull ups, chin ups, rows etc
but you dont see people doing that seriously.
-
Do deadllift one day, and do a back training the day before, even if you got no muscle soreness from dead, after a few set of chin/row your back will cramp everywhere and you'll realise that the deadlift the day before worked your back on an unexpected way.
Also if you can't squat because of knee injury you'll realise your squat strenght is almost intact when you come back to squat if you do heavy dead during recovery.
Deadlift is just terrific for back and posterior chain.
