Title: Need new sneakers
Post by: drkaje on April 03, 2006, 09:03:50 AM
Almost embarrassed to admit this but..... I left my sneakers at the gym. Instead of putting them in the "lost and Found" some assbag decided to donate them to charity (or at least that's my guess because ther's one of those choe charity boxes by the entrance).

So.... Jake needs new sneakers for the gym. Typically I just get cross trainers. Is there a preferred brand?

Before my GetBig friends help there are a few things to not suggest:

There's no scenerio where I'm gonna change shoes between working out and cardio. One pair will have to do for both. I only walk for cardio.

No Otomix. I have a size 13 foot, aside from looking gay you have to go up a size in those shoes. Apologies to all the Otomix wearers in advance.

If you aren't planning on playing basketball (or other side-to-side sports) in them I would go with running shoes.  They are normally the best cushioned, most comfortable and lightest.  Brand wise it really depends on your feet-different companies shoes tend to fit a certain way.  A really good brand that works for many people but doesn't advertise as much is Brooks-check out the Adrenaline, Asics would be a good choice to.

Right now i've got some nike's that feel great but i've used several brands, just see what feels good.

Agreed, the Otomix look gayer than Richard Simmons after five banana daiquiris.

I found a shoe made by "victor" not sure if its a tennis shoe or whatever but i knew right when i saw them they'd be perfect. every other shoe kills me when i do calves so i'd always take off my shoes but these work good.

They might not be very supportive for squats.

One of my friends has a Converse endorsement, LOL!

Arnold trained barefoot

Don't know if Arnold trained barefooted but I do most of the time. Or I will wear flip flops or sandels on occasion. On leg exercises, it seems to have a better feel when barefooted. If anything, I think that all calf exercises should be done barefooted. Not only a better feel for the exercises but a fuller stretch and gripping development. Even when doing standing presses, for example, gripping my toes tends to give a more balanced position barefooted. May not work for everyone but does work for me. Probably because I  grew up next to a beach and in SO Cal (in a beach community) that barefeet, sandels/Flip Flops are pretty much a way of life all year around. As are baggy shorts and loose T shirts. Good Luck.

Side Bar: If any one would like renewed calf growth (as well as increased endurance+cardio) try doing sprints, barefooted, in loose sand. Gives size to the legs also.

Nike Shox here also.  I read Cutler uses them on leg days as well.

Sometime last year we all got together and decided that combat boots and flip-flops were gay. There was a commitee meeting and everything, LOL! I'd like to train legs barefoot once.

There actually pretty bad for long runnings,
they don't support your feet properly.

Somebody brought up Converse,
simple sneakers, and over the years they haven't done anything on airblocks, gels shockabsorbers,
you know why, cause it's marketingbullshit. Your feet are perfectly capable of making adjustments to the enviorment. Converse doesn't support the feet, it just protects it.

Nike has finally discovered it, and brings out the nike free.

Check out http://www.runningbarefoot.org/ , shitty site, but it has a simple message, you don't need shoes.
A concept performerd by billions over the world, and guess what, the still have their feet.

So the next time if you see sneakers of +200 dollars , look, and pass on. They're selling you air, marketingair.

Try playing basketball or running on pavement with bare feet. :P

Basketball shouldn't be a problem, 6+ tall guys weighing over 250 jumping all day 6 day a week, that's the problem,
I have to agree on pavement.

Nevertheless, cheap sneakers that protect the foot are better than expensive sneakers that want to replace the foot. Your feet are designed to carry you.
The only exception are for those people who are walking all day, or stand mostly on the same stop, external support is essential cause the muscles get tired to provide the neccessary support.

Believe me it sucked. Went right away when I started wearing sneakers that had good arch support and had custom made inserts. I limped around like I had a wooden leg before that. I had a bunch of cortisone shots that didn't do shit.
