Something tells me there is more to the story than how you are framing it.
Whatever started this whole thing isn't shown. The dude only drew his pistol when several of the urban yoots started to attack him at once.
The guy may well be in the wrong for trying to detain the first kid but we don't know that yet based on what is and isn't shown the video.

Obviously we don't know what happened previously but that cop could have easily defused the situation. Instead, he escalated it and was lucky not to have killed someone.
Also, why did they handcuff the kid and not the off duty cop?

ANAHEIM, Calif. (KABC) --
An off-duty Los Angeles police officer fired his weapon outside his Anaheim home during an altercation involving several juveniles.
No one was hurt during the incident, which occurred around 2:40 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Euclid Street and Palais Road.
According to Anaheim police, the confrontation stemmed from ongoing issues with juveniles walking across the officer's property.
As the incident escalated, a 13-year-old male allegedly threatened to shoot the off-duty officer. That's when the officer attempted to detain the juvenile until Anaheim police officers arrived.
The situation between the officer and the boy turned physical, with several other juveniles joining in, Anaheim police said.
During the struggle, the officer reached for his gun and opened fire. No one was injured.
The circumstances surrounding the firing of the weapon were being investigated by the Anaheim Police Department's Homicide Detail.
The 13-year-old boy was arrested and booked at Orange County Juvenile Hall for criminal threats and battery. A 15-year-old boy was also arrested for assault and battery and was released to his parents.
The case is set to be presented to the Orange County District Attorney's Office when it is completed. The names of those involved in the incident were not released.
The Los Angeles Police Department is conducting its own internal investigation into the actions of the officer, Anaheim police said.

That article mentions that it is an ongoing thing with kids from that school, so who knows if those kids were purposely messing with him after a certain point, and this just wasn't their lucky day. Also there is ambiguity as to whether they knew he was a cop, etc.....
While it maybe ::), he could have the legal right to stop the kid, and if they knew he was a cop, and still rushed him, etc..., it could be defensible for the gun to come out.
I'm willing to chalk this one up to a bunch of assholes all meeting at the same time.

There is a great show called nightwatch that follows paramedics, police and fire in New Orleans. Many of gang members they scrape off the pavement shot are teenagers. One was shot and thrown out of moving car.

Nonsense. He was trying to detain the kid and the kid was resisting. The video clearly shows the other kids starting to get aggressive. Only then did he draw his weapon. Whether or not the were swearing is not relevant and we can't fully tell if they or were not swearing in the video. We've all seen the videos of what happens when a bunch of young minorities get aggressive with a lone white person. They gang up and stomp the shit out of their white ass and then run off like a the cowards they are. He was right to draw his weapon when he did.
Important to add that more details will eventually come out on whether he was right to detain the kid or not. The cop could have been in the wrong on that, we don't know. Also, we need to find out if he fired a warning shot or if he had a negligent discharge.

There is more to the story than we see
This police officer was having issues with the kids going on his property and lawn. They continued to do it.
However, on this incident, it was a girl that walked on the lawn. This officers comes at her yelling and screaming, and the one in the video asked him to respect and was not the threatening one. He didn't say 'Shoot You. He said 'I am going to sue you' if you continue acting like that. The cop was all heated and it escalated.
Granted, there is an issue there, but this got way out of hand, and he actually fired a shot, because as his dad said 'There were 15 of them, and only 1 of him'. The sad thing is that while the homeowner (cop) has a point, he will lose in court now because of this.

Meh. Nobody budged when he whipped it out. A controlled discharge into the ground was the best way to diffuse the threat without harming anyone. Worked like a charm.
Grabbing a kid was still a really stupid thing to do. Contact the parents. Contact the school. Contact the police. Build a fence. If they're hopping the fence, build an unhoppable fence. Make it tall. Spikey. Electrify it. Dig a ditch at the base of it and fill it with red dye. Make it telescope upwards after someone hops it if you really want to imprison someone. Unleash the hounds. Shoot him. Stab yourself in the arm and place the knife in his dead hand. There's dozens of ways to dissuade, deter, or dispose of a stubborn child. It's almost as if people paid for their firearm with their imagination.

It does not matter if he accidentally or intended to fire the shot at the exact time it was fired. Justified either way. He had no idea that they were going to bum rush him to the ground so he was not "waiting" on anything. It happened and he acted accordingly to protect himself.

I'm not completely disagreeing with what you are saying, I'm just not 100% sure the cop is in the right here. Maybe the kid threatened to shoot him, maybe he didn't.
I think I might have chosen to record the little shits on video, trespassing and shit talking. Gather some evidence that helps to prove what's really going on. As it stands now it's kinda his word vs theirs.
It's tough. Having to deal with "certain communities" of people is a no win situation. They do the most and then cry the loudest when you react to their fuckery.
I still say that gunshot was an ND and not a warning shot. I'm interested to hear what other info comes out.

those kids seemed to be pretty respectful tbf. after swearing at a young girl and then physically dragging one of them around for several minutes i thought they acted very well in trying to initially talk the man into letting go of their friend.
had they been more unruly he would have no doubt been lying on his back with 10 different shoe prints imprinted on his face before he had the chance to even go for his gun. and he would have probably deserved it given his ridiculous behaviour.

What's respectful about mobbing up on an adult, arguing and swearing? Where has the respect gone for your elders? Even if the man was in the wrong, where has the respect, civility, and dignity gone to just stand-by and wait for the police to arrive?
