Title: Energy drinks - Anyone here addicted to them
Post by: FREAKgeek on March 23, 2017, 10:38:34 AM
I'm starting to waste too much money on this bad habit - I buy the sugarless rockstar or monster now several times a day. My urine looks like it came from a nuclear power plant.

I don't even drink them for energy, I don't know, it's what it is to someone who smokes.

I let up on the "clean diet" cause you guys are a bad influence  ;D

Same here, I just stopped 3 weeks ago.  Drank 2 a day for about a year.

What makes them so addicting?

Caffeine

Has to be something in it, working with the caffeine.  I've talked to other people that drink monsters and they say the same thing. Not the same as redbull or coffee.

Seriously?

Yeah. Had an arterial fibrillation due to alcohol. They gave me a cardiorevision. The joke is I had a night out with a group of guys doing coke all night long, I've never done it in my life and I'm the one having to go to hospital. Didn't even drink loads.

So since that I've not had a drop, cut out energy drinks and cleaned up my diet. It was a bit of a wake-up.

Cheers. It's kinda funny, had nothing worse than the flu my whole adult life. Needed surgery in Nov, nearly died from sepsis after that. Then this. It's been a rough few months.

On the bright side I'm far more conscious of the shit I eat or drink and am getting in better shape.

33. No heart issues, always been pretty fit and healthy. Never ever had a high BP reading. No history of heart issues in the family either (MODS: please delete this post if I die from steroid related issues so people can claim it was hereditary).

It was just shit pot luck I guess. The doctors had no concerns over my health afterwards.

Too much alcohol is terrible on the ticker, you mix that with coke and it's a magnitude worse. You won't live long regularly doing this.

Glad to see you're OK! I'm going to celebrate with a rockstar. ;D

I take part of a caffeine pill with an energy drink to make up the 200mg of caffeine I need for my eca stack. I have them a few times a week when I get tired of just eating caffeine pills and/or coffee.

I like sugar free rockstar or monster, but they're insanely sweet. I used to like NOS but can't find the sugar free flavours any more.

Currently trying out the Celsius Heat drinks at the office - they are brand new, and pretty good

Our team here drinks VPX's Bang, ABB's Speed Shots and Speed Stacks - all pretty good.

Sadly, yes, caffeine is the main culprit, and many of us are addicted.  Not caffeine = headache

Its so bad for your teeth the energy drinks. Packed with sugar ands caffeine, and 'something' else that makes it so addictive. I can just see someone drinking one and want one instantly, or even imagine the taste of it and instantly crave one. I rarely drink such things anymore though, but i used to drink them a lot.

You're addicted to the caffeine.

Despite all the other bullshit ingredients they put in these drinks, the only active ingredient is the caffeine.

The so-called "energy" is fake.  The large doses of caffeine are burning out your adrenals and helping to dissolve the calcium in your bones.

Lastly, you're wasting lots of money.  If you must have your 'fix', go to any pharmacy and buy generic caffeine tabs... MUCH less expensive.

Back in my club days, 2000/2001, I'd take a case of RedBull from my GNC on a Thursday night and sell'em in the club parking lot and at the after party at Balboa Park or Seaworld boat docks thurs/Fri/sat nights 2 for $3 or just 2 for $2 & pocket $40-60 lol... Was an 18+ "techno" club. Would also drink 2 cans before entering and taking my 1.5-2 tabs of X thurs & sat nights. Rolled from 10pm till 5am. Opening that store at 9am Saturday would require another can of RedBull lol. Good memories

I was in my late teens and early 20's I used stay out/up all night, fucking girls, etc... but I did it without stims.  Kids today are hooked on these drinks and these companies are making a fortune from it.... a simple caffeine drink with sugar, acid and flavor in it.

I was addicted to sugar free rockstar a few years ago, drinking 2 a day.  I played a soccer game one night after drinking one and had a rapid heart rate and felt palpitations.  I quit right then and have never touched them again.  Now I drink a cup of coffee in the morning and sometimes one in the early afternoon.  The caffeine is what we are all addicted to.  Within a week, you can kick a caffeine habit though but be prepared for a nasty headache.

The whole calcium leaching and adrenal burnout is greatly exaggerated. But I'm not saying energy drinks are totally safe either, they do F with you to some degreee.

Regarding tabs, it's not the same thing. Tabs hit you too quickly and are crappy. It is no comparison to, say a cup of coffee in the morning. It's all about the administration. Plus there are many compounds in coffee that aren't understood by science, it's actually good for you in moderation.

That is the best way to do it.  I knew I wouldn't be able to drink just half a can though.  So I just dealt with the headaches.  I actually only had one for a couple days and I took some ibuprofen to help it.  I had some serious cravings for it for a while though.  It's hard when you drive by every convenient store and see them on the poster ads outside.

Cost > Benefit

It just seems like a huge waste of money (not to mention what it probably is doing to your health). If you get 1 can per day = close to $750 year.
Might as well just buy those caffeine pills and drink sugar free kool-aid at a fraction of the cost.

Regarding large daily doses some people take, it's not exaggerated, it's true.  People like to ignore/deny it in order to justify their "crutch"... all addicts (whatever the substance is) behave the same way.

I agree that caffeine tabs can hit you quickly, but it's dose related.  If you cut the tab into 1/2 or 1/3, it won't do that.

All energy drinks have caffeine added (unlike coffee)... it's the same as taking caffeine tabs.  Redline energy drinks average 39.5 mg of caffeine per fluid ounce.   If you drink the whole thing, that is a ridiculous amount of caffeine to consume at one time.

Friend of mine helps out rehabilitating kids from broken homes, once met him with a 17 year old guy who had been drinking about 25 cans of monster a day since he was 10-12. Guy barely had any teeth in his mouth, and seemed to permanently twitch.

Moderation is key with stimulants. Just like you wouldn't (shouldn't) pound down pre-workout every work-out since it just creates dependencies and lessens the actual effect, yet with increasing health effects.

The appetite suppression causes malnutrition and gum/tooth decay.  Also, any acidic/sugared low pH beverage (sodas are the worst) you drink causes tooth enamel to dissolve.  The more acidic it is, the teeth/calcium dissolve even faster (basic chemistry).  Do it several times a day, over and over again and will dissolve your teeth in only a few years.

Grown people don't drink soft/energy drinks on a daily basis. I don't know about kidney failure, but I see many energy drink addicts with the attention span shorter than the average toddler.

I had a client form a while who ran a kidney clinic or institute or something. She'd constantly warn me about how "rock stars and workout powders" will damage my kidneys. She assumed I drank the energy sodas like "all the other kids" after I mentioned a preworkout drink I had one day. (She was never a birch about it though) talked about blood pressure and afib and tachycardia and other stuff. She'd treated kids with kid ey issues and they all Drank rockstar/monsters daily.... I assume those kida/ppl were also no stranger to other stims as well, however.

Energy drinks should be consumed by senior citizens. Instead they are bought by mostly young people who are in a period of their lives with the most energy ever. After that it goes downhill     ;D

Their heart and other organs might not be able to handle the stress of the stims.  Most seniors are usually very frail.

Many seniors spent their energy more wisely. They often get up early in the morning and perform household tasks or go to the gym while they younger folks check their phone with one eye.

I swear those Speed Stacks have some crazy stuff in them.  I drink one and feel like a Mentat from Dune.

I dont see the big deal with energy drinks. A monster has 150mg of caffeine, Redbull 80mg. Caffeine is safe upward 300mg ED for most individuals.
I think the sugar is a lot more concerning than the caffeine.
The kid drinking 25 cans of monsters a day and having no teeth and twitching : thats 2g+ of caffeine everyday that would mess up everyone big time, also more than a KILO of pure sugar. Try to have good teeth with that.

300 mg is about 3 regular cups of coffee, which means that most folks fuck up their brains & nervous system with too many 'stimulants'

I've heard that before. I always thought that I was a good sleeper, since I'm 'gone' within 10-15 minutes, but an EEG study indicated that my sleep quality is poor. On most day's I drink one mug of coffee late in the morning or early in the afternoon, that's about it.

My typical day starts off with 2 large McDonald's coffees (black). That's gone within 2 hrs.

Then during lunch I'll down a sugarless monster or rockstar (16 ounces)

Then mid afternoon either another sugarless energy drink or large coffee at McDonald's.

Then after dinner I'll make my own coffee .

I feel I have high tolerance, but I think that's tame compared to a large Starbucks or a caffeine pills. Those f you up way more.

Ok, I lied.  I only had a sip.  If you don't know, Ghost Juice is a local energy drink made with ghost peppers.  I can not handle spicy food at all.  I damn near wanted to pull my lips off my face.  My eyes turned on the water works big time.

Thailand is where Redbull came from. Somebody on vacation noticed all the cab drivers were drinking the same energy drink so they tried it n liked it. Found out the name translated to "redbull" & i think tbey bought the company or formula or something (somebody from austria) & marketed it with the english name and Redbull was born.

I hate those syrupy thai energy drinks. Tried a lot of them never got used to the taste.
And those workers are taking yaba usually not redbull.
Reminds me when Mike Goldberg used to justify his weird attitude and look by "drinking a lot of redbull" while he was actually high on adderal the whole time.
