A sniper with Canada’s elite special forces in Iraq has shattered the world record for the longest confirmed kill shot in military history at a staggering distance of 3,540 metres. The Canadian Armed Forces confirmed Thursday that a member of Joint Task Force 2 made the record-breaking shot, killing an Islamic State insurgent during an operation in Iraq within the last month. The elite sniper was using a McMillan TAC-50 sniper rifle while firing from a high-rise during an operation that took place within the last month in Iraq.
Canada has a reputation among Western military forces for the quality of its snipers, despite the small size of the Canadian Armed Forces compared to the United States and Britain.

If the shot is true, and it really happened, it was pure luck/chance. He'd need to adjust for around -250 MOA. Not sure there's a scope capable of that. :-\

This sniper was hanging around and saw a guy 3540metres (2.3 miles) away, and shot him at the forehead just like in movies? In reality it is different because no one can see a guy 3540metres (2.3 miles) away. In reality there must be a spotter near of the target who tell the shooter where to aim. Like "Do you see the building with the red car at the front of it? This ISIS Guy is shagging the sheep just at the left corner of it. I start the recording in 5 seconds.." ;D

The only Canadian Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan are the Elite Special Forces (JTF2). Canada withdrew their conventional army a few years ago and the F-18 Jets they had there last year.

All of my physical altercations beyond teenage years have been while working the door. I've never had trouble when I'm just out etc. And I've never started any of them.

Are snipers that big of a deal anymore anyway? The U.S come under sniper fire in the middle East and they take cover and call in warthogs or something until they're blown to shit. What really stood out was the diagram they used to show just how high above the target the sniper must have aimed - I may have misheard (800ft??), but the diagram shows their calculation..... it's pretty mind-blowing....

I think the holdover was 800inches.. Buick which means he aimed for 800 in above the Target and that's not even including or mentioning windage adjustments. That's like a Hail Mary with a bullet

You have to own a lot of acres to be allowed to buy a rifle like that here. :( Permitted caliber goes by land size, I think, so that's basically a couple million dollar gun plus a few 10k in optics. And I think he said he's firing solid copper bullets. (Doesn't everyone?) I don't think 'Mark and Sam' are coming home after work from the local hardware or grocery store.
While I'm being a dick - yes, these shots are amazing but the point almost eludes me. If you're the military you could send a guided missile to a target painted by satellite or drone, or just hit it with the drone's weaponry, and hit it every time, from an even greater distance. To ok a shot like the Canuk took and not use more expensive kill-assured weapons, commanders must have been like "Meh, if you can get him cool but if you miss it's not that big a deal." If you're a hobby shooter interested in accuracy then why not just use a bench rifle with micrometer adjustments and a viewing screen? I see little distinction between that and propping a traditional rifle on a bipod plus a sand bag for stability. It's not like you're holding the thing at all.

'Straya, cunt! You'll pick up a couple thousand acres for couple million but you have to do that before you get to buy the gun. Bench rifles are super accurate, heavy things with knobs that dial in adjustments in fine increments. I figure once you're that detached from the rifle, you might as well not bother snuggling a cheek against it and opt instead to send the image you'd see through the scope to a screen.

Rifle used to the shot has prize of 12 000 -14 000$(customized), Optics take something like 4000 - 5000$ so you can get similar tools under 30 000$. Quite far from millions. Ammo? Seem to be 12$ per shot with solid copper bullet, which weights 8 oz /226 grams. Only thing which you can't buy is skills needed to make that shot. To make one shot hit at that distance is pure luck no matter who is shooting, but if you hit the target anywhere, it goes down with a splash. Why send missiles or drones, when you can stop lot of things with 12$ bullet?

So? A .45 will still kill you from 300yards but you still gotta hit the target, & hitting the target is easier with a flattrr-shooting, higher velocity .416 than a .50. Does it matter if the 50 will kill you more. You're not walking away from either of them.

I misunderstood Tapeworms response - now he's explained to me that in 'Straya ( ;D) you'd have to spend millions on purchasing enough land to allow you to legally own a rifle of that sort, so it was an indirect cost - the price of the rifle itself is almost beside the point.... And I suppose if you're that rich, then $12 a shot doesn't really matter... :P

Just look around: I bet that there is hundreds of great shooting locations between you and 2.2 miles away from you, in case if someone want to take you down without any fuzz and without the risk of being caught. Just load your own ammunition with paper patched bullets. It increase accuracy and there will be no rifling marks at the bullets..

Head out to the desert, rack a round and pour tacks down the barrel, tie a string to the trigger and fire it from 10yards back. Remove the bolt/pin, and brass and just leave the thing there. Scatter the rest off free offramp. Return the van and be done with it. Whole things done for 120+12$ for the rounds and $25 for the van. Take less than 2hrs.

I'm pretty sure you could pick up an m38 for a couple hundred at a gun show with bullets. They're not the most accurate so Youd be lucky with a 4-5moa but you should be able to take a target cm with 2 rounds at 100yards. And 2 should be plenty with 762x54. Hell, fire from inside a truck. I didn't even thinknaboutbthat van in jack read her.. I was thi king lee malvo. Just damage the barrel of the rifle and take out the bolt n stuff, wipe it and toss it.

Just because they're sharp to your finger doesn't mean they're sharp to materials harder than they are. Can you scratch a rock with a sharp piece of wood? It's just this sort of lack of critical thinking that's going to see you successfully prosecuted once again. Imho you're not competent to negotiate the pitfalls of a criminal enterprise. I advise the path of the straight and narrow.

Packing metal in there id assume wouldnplave somen gouges in the barrel and balliatics from the bullets shot before and after wouldn't match up well. Enough for Reasonable Doubt anyways, I would think.. If it even got to that point. Remember firing .45 long colt and .41mag out of a .410 and just a couple rounds of each the barrel (having no obstructions, was marked up inside pretty bad.... every mark on the bullets fired out of it and use for ballistics would hopefully have marks on them that are inconsistent with the victim's bullet . If they they evenretrieved the bullet from the victim chances are I think that they be assuming it would come for me more common 762x39 rifle like an AK or SKS. Notbsure If they'd be able to determine it was a 762 by 5'4
