Very good last interview with Mike Matarazzo, sad stuff. PIP
-
What a shame. I always liked Mike, his personality. He seemed like a real cool dude, his attitude. It's near criminal how the Weiders sucked the blood out of so many and reaped all the hundreds of millions from it. You'd think an honest leader of an industry would have tried to take care of one of its well known athletes.
You can really hear the sadness and regret in Mike's voice, he knows he is fucked and will not get better. What I would like to see is the pictures the interviewer took from this. R.I.P. big Mike.
-
Sad that this sport is based on drug use. It can never go back. No one would accept a 190lbs Mr. Olympia winner anymore.

This .
Ironic for this So called GENETICALLY GIFTED industry" where you have to inject drugs constantly .
WoooSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

A 190 LB MR O WOULD STILL NEED TO USE DRUGS TO COMPETE IF ALL ARE USING TO CHASE HIM..EXAMPLE FRANK ZANE USED HOW MUCH/LONG DON'T KNOW BUT STILL ..

You are right. I am not advocating the use of the drugs for any sport, they are in fact used i. Virtualy every sport. They always will be,its a risk the participant has to decide for themselves. In Mikes case, he openly admited that he had a family history of high cholesterol. He chose to play with a loaded gun. The odds where stacked against his health and he still chose the route of tissue building drugs. I could probably have used steriods had i choosen and suffered no ill effect, maybe. My family has a good strong line of longevity with low cholesterol and good heart function. Yet even then one never knows what effect the drugs could play in ones long term health.

his widow will not tell his son that his father died doing what he love.....I'm sure every Pro bodybuilder knows once you shake hands with the devil, your soul is his, don't say we didn't warn ya

And he said that he had a GENETIC PREDISPOTION to heart disease and he still chose to abuse his body with drugs. That was foolish and irresponsible. But at least he was honest and told the truth in the end. He had a lot of regrets.

damn, that must have been hell to know you're dying and won't live to see your Son grow

Steroids are a risk to health. Fans of steroids always rationalize their use by saying genetic predisposition for those suffering health problems. It's like a smoker who says his grandfather lived to be 90 smoking his whole life. Doesn't change the fact that smoking is a risk for heart, lung and cancer health. I also don't believe all pro athletes are syringing their ass. Of course some do.

Mike had both... massive abuse and a predisposition
and the result speaks for itself

you are a big fan of the sport, but once these guys are "small and useless to us" you crap all over them with your "holier than thou" nonsense
you are a piece of shit, and i just said another prayer to send you to hell when your miserable life ends :-*

Earl who did you pray to?
If it was YHWH do you think he sees Royalty as your enemy?

Whats weird is that the health issues and deaths are primarily with bodybuilders, although all these other pro athletes in other sports are doping, not many ex-football players on dialysis or former track and field athletes dropping dead of heart attacks. Maybe high doses? Maybe diet related? Maybe long term use??
-
Seems it's primarily with modern bbing and wrestlers
-
yeah at least a dozen bodybuilders died of, possibly, steroid usage in the last 50 years!!
it's a risky sport, along with other risky sports like jai alai, bull fighting and cheer leading.
-
some bbers should listen to this..
-
Don't kid yourselves... all the doctors/procedures/medicines/treatments helped kill him.
-

'Anymore'? This was never the case. What's IMO is sad, is that people rely too much on drug use and take them (almost) right away, which isn't just bodybuilding-related.

I've met plenty of examples. Guess you train in your mom's basement or at Planet Fitness :D

right you met some people so that makes it so.
great evidence there.
-
The way the IFBB turned their back on him was a real eye openner. Mike had a hard time paying his medical bills, up until his death.
Strangely, there is no shortage of wannabe pros, willing to die by the thong.
-
A friend of mine knew Mike in fact Mike worked for him when he was competing. I know Mike likes to blame steroids and all the meat he ate, but I remember my friend telling me back then how bad Mike ate in the off season. Total junk food diet. Nothing against the guy but eating cakes and pies and McDonald's in excess everyday can't be healthy for you.
-
I think that Arvilla was a big fan of Matarazzo. So if Big Mike is reading, i'd like to hear him chime in ...
All things considered, would you (as a guy with a huge passion for bodybuilding) change lives with Matarazzo?
pros: bodybuilding fame ... Olympia competitor ... magazine covers etc.
con: health problems and premature death ... but you don't have a wife and kids (as far as I know)

His first heart attack was at age 38. By his own admission his life sucked after that. He lived another 11 years knowing he was not going to live long and his quality of life was poor. Why anyone would trade who the are for another is beyound me, especially when you know how sad his last decade was for him. Nothing would be worth that. We never know when we will go, wouldnt you want to do everythi g possible to maintain optimum health so your odds are better. Live to be 90 and have good family with grandkids.

yeah, well forget the literal "change lives" with another person part (silly wording on my part.)
but, perhaps, some who live bodybuilding may accept the tradeoff of a dozen years of truly livin' the dream with fame & "success" in exchange for a life cut short?

It's a very selfish mindset. Willing to leaving wife & kids behind.

that's why i'm asking Arvilla ... because (as far as I know) he doesn't have a wife & kids.

Here's what guru-wizard Skip Hill had to say about Mike in an article without rhyme, reason, or a thesis.
https://www.elitefts.com/education/motivation/im-not-sad-for-mike-matarazzo/
-
Mike was definitely declining by 2001. Not sure if he was intentionally lowering the dosages for fear of his health or what.
-
Mike ate a lot of red meat, there was a few years there where he ate a kilo a day off season. Was silly to eat this way with a genetic heart disposition to high cholesterol then combine it with pro level steroid use, real shame was a nice guy always had time for everyone.
-

As Mike started lowering the dose, Nasser started upping the synthol

Yep I met him in about 97-98 and I couldn't believe how wide the sumbich was or how gargantuan his calves were.
He was nice to everyone when I met him but I've heard stories he was an asspipe sometimes too. I guess we're all that way though.

I always remember his first Musclemag cover, and the black and white shot of him winning the Nationals 8)

I have on good authority that Vincenzo packs 8" and thick. That said, what makes you say think that Matarazzo was a bender? I've never heard any word that Matarazzo was a bender. Pretty sure he was straight.
Also, sadly, Vincenzo is absolutely correct that Matarazzo's physique did indeed cost him his life. Not sure how Vince knew what Mike took or if he took anything above and beyond the average pro though. Although Vincenzo does have inside sources, so who knows.
Someone told me Mike had used recreational drugs at times, but I don't completely trust the person who told me that. It wouldn't surprise me - but I don't believe it just because someone said it.

Amazing arms and calves and also a really cool guy.
I met him in the early 90's and based on how he ate (loved Taco Bell) I kinda figured he would end up with heart issues later in life.

Just as a reference anytime someone references top anything it’s in comparison to the elite contest, in this case the Olympia.
Taking 2nd at the Toronto pro doesn’t mean you’re the second best bodybuilder in the world. You might not even be the best bodybuilder in Matt Cannings city.
Hope this helps, newb.

all that childish name calling like a teen aged girl holding a grudge against her ex boyfriend makes me think he had a lot of bottled up hatred for me, probably due to me criticizing his favorite bodybuilder in the old truce thread
i wonder how much time he wasted looking up those competition placings

You have to ask Ed Conners about that.
The thing that impressed me the most was the 'concern' that folks had for Matarazzo. They were so concerned that they could not even round up enough money to save the guy's life and have him go through a heart transplant. What happened to schmoe-ville?

Please post about it on YouTube. You will reach 75 - 200 views and really inform the world

I would say that Matarazzo was elite. Anyone that turned pro in the 90’s would have to be considered elite.
Look at the names in the heavyweight division that Mike had to defeat in order to turn pro:
HeavyWeight
1 Mike Matarazzo
2 Ken Wheeler *
3 Dean Caputo
4 Chris Cormier *
5 Kyle Norris
6 Harry Johnson
7 Bill Burney
8 Davis McGinty
9 Philip Hernon *
10 Raoul Fulcher
11 Bob Cicherillo *
12 Joe Carrero
13 Vincent Allen
14 Ronnie Coleman *

Agreed.
Mike was great but to Earls point he was never a top 6 guy. He had all time great body parts but where does he fit in this group: Yates, Coleman, Wheeler, Ray, Nassar, Dillet, Cormier, Levrone, Ruhl, Cutler, Dex.
Hes not out of place in that group but as a pro his best didnt always measure up. Idk what he was missing.

Thank you for posting this. I thought about this point exactly after I left for work. Beat Ronnie , Cormier and Flex ;D managed to place top 6 at the 1993 Arnold Classic but wouldn't place top 6 against one of the shittiest Mr Olympia line-ups in memory? ::)

I’d have to say the late 80s through to Late 90’s / 2000 was the Best era for quality Physiques
In the Pro Line ups. The Depth of Quality in Pro shows just isn’t there any more & hasn’t been
For a long while. That’s not to say there isn’t Great Physiques around.

LOL, yeah - @ the 2013 Europa in Orlando. I was 178-lb there - Kev was around 185-lb. Kev is maybe an inch taller than me at most.
Blows me away how "normal" Kev can look before getting his size back on.
Wait, ND - are you saying that Earl cried when he talked to Kev live?

Yes he didn’t make a splash winning, but his contest history shows a very competitive placing in 2nd tier shows ,he as pretty good considering that.his USA win build was as an a amateur pretty impressive to say the least.as with most big pros more size more weight to catch Yates, fux,Nasser ,dillet was only option.

and yes phil owns dorian, and no mike wouldn't be top 6 last year or any year, he sucked

I would say that Matarazzo was elite. Anyone that turned pro in the 90’s would have to be considered elite.
Look at the names in the heavyweight division that Mike had to defeat in order to turn pro:
HeavyWeight
1 Mike Matarazzo
2 Ken Wheeler *
3 Dean Caputo
4 Chris Cormier *
5 Kyle Norris
6 Harry Johnson
7 Bill Burney
8 Davis McGinty
9 Philip Hernon *
10 Raoul Fulcher
11 Bob Cicherillo *
12 Joe Carrero
13 Vincent Allen
14 Ronnie Coleman *
15 Gerard Dente
he beat them as amateurs
to keep this relevant to today, my alma mater's high school basketball team beat kobe bryant's high school basketball team in 1995, i guess they were better players than kobe right?
E

Earl " teared up " when Kevin returned to the Olympia stage :-X :'( :'( :'( :'( ::) ::) ::)
you teared up when you realized how much of a fool you made out of yourself not realizing i meant the olympia and not the pittsburgh pro ;D

Flex Wheeler was an awesome amateur.
You should probably know that as a bodybuilding fan. I mean Flex placed 2nd behind Levrone a few months later at the NPC Nationals.

how did their amateur career become relevant here? look at all those names that placed above ronnie, who cares?

My point was, to beat any of those guys... a competitor would have to be damn good.
During that same summer, Demayo beat Levrone at the Junior Nationals. Then Levrone beat Demayo in November at the Nationals. Not an easy feat in either situation.
To turn pro in that era was very difficult

He got top 6 at the 1993 ASC could Brandon do that in 1993? NOT a chance. 8) Brandon wouldn't even turn pro back in the 90s. To many exceptional competitors. Look at Edgar Fletcher , Brandon would be in the same boat. Brandon is one of the most ho-hum Mr Olympias since Dickerson. He only won because Shawn was out and so was Phil. Not his fault but he had trash competition.

mike vs 5th at last years olympia

In the current era, Matarazzo would probably place similarly to Dallas McCarver (RIP also). Like 7th or 8th at the Olympia

post mike from 93 and lets compare them to brandon now
couldn't turn pro in the 90's? get glasses or lose your girly bias
look at edgar fletcher omg ::)
i don't think brandon is exceptional but he is way better than matarazzo, that is not debatable to anybody with two eyes

Mike would have to find a way to get into contest shape without losing his size. That was his downfall. Losing too much mass as he dieted

And here we are debating it ;) You have your opinion, Which I have proven for well over a decade is ignorant & biased. Good for you. Go learn how contests are judged then maybe the adults will entertain your childish ramblings when you get a clue.
lol Brandon Curry would be able to turn pro in the 1990s ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)
-
I was friends with Mike (and his wife Linda) ... turned pro at a super competitive era (1991 USA’s was the best he ever looked however ... he “ pushed it” for that contest and never wanted to do or take what he to in order to win ( his words) .. Brandon is way more “ complete “ than Mike was (Mike = sub par back .. Legs = nothing Special .. long torso ...huge arms and calves ...he never achieved his pro win shape again... Brandon Would best him on a bodybuilding stage

you're right i shouldn't debate something that is so obvious and i shouldn't argue with a crazy person, why not try to prove you aren't a lunatic by posting pics of mike from 93 proving he would beat brandon?
so you do or don't think brandon could turn pro in the 90's? ::)

You've been recovering from the asskicking you got for claiming Phil would beat Dorian ;D ;D ;D ;D moron. Trying to save face in this thread and guess what you're getting your ass kicked again. ;)

And here you are again trying to prove you're correct. I don't care if Mike could beat Brandon or not. And I'm smart enough to know I can't prove anything to you because you're comfortable in your ignorance and your bias. And sure let me post a shitty magazine scan compared to high definition digital photography that will convince moron Earl ::) Believe what you'd like. Those of us in the know will continue to mock and laugh at you. :D

no they know when they are owned and they accept defeat like a man, unlike you being a petty girl that will argue about it for literally a decade
i typed that willingly knowing what to expect, it doesn't hurt me at all and it is more respectable than having meltdowns over saying mike wouldn't be top 6 today 8)

Mike looked very good here. 1999 Olympia. He had kept a lot of fullness here.

so now you agree with me that brandon would beat mike? it's hard to keep up with your lunacy, does mike beat roelly in that front double bi? it's hard to find pics online of mike in any pose that doesn't involve his biceps or calves, gee i wonder why ::)

Again stupid. I never said Mike would or wouldn't. ;) I said he would place top 6 in the Olympia. and still wondering how contests are judged? I'll clue you in again ( and again and again ) it isn't who has the best 1 pose ;) Bandon sucks which is exactly why 2 of the greatest Olympia winners said as much.

Carry on 8)
yes i will continue spreading the facts no matter how much they ruin your day 8)

does he beat 5th place roelly yes or no? why is that so hard to answer? what pose does mike beat brandon in?
i think ramy got 6th, what poses does mike beat him in?
i never said brandon was a great champ, i said he craps all over mike easily, i don't understand why that hurts your feelings so much

Matarrazo spurs lots of memories. If i remember his arm routine favored basically dumbell curls and various cable movements. Pretty much the same as say Dillet. Some have it too easy, Matarrazzo wasca good example of this. He had no none zero thickness in his back or chest and his shoulders sucked. Why? Answer is obvious. Also he looked ok at best when he was semi dieted down but onstage he lost whatever fullness his body had. He turned pro at a time when you had to have at least one freaky standout bodypart to get noticed. RIP Mike and thankyou for many fond memories.

6th place at the 2019 Mr Olympia vs Mike dead last from the 1996 Olympia 8) ( second pic he's not even a pro yet :o ) What was that Earl? Mike wouldn't place top 6 in this past Olympia? ;) Thanks for playing :)

Matarazzo was not like Dillett. In the early articles in FLEX, it was said that, in his amateur days, Mike had done barbell cheat curls with 275LB and Skull Crushers with 225LB

i think mike looks better, ok mike would get 6th last year but would be out of the top 6 every other year
does that help you cry less?

I would say that Mike is probably 285 or so here. Abs are decent for that body weight
