Tesla Model X Driver Killed In California After Crashing On Barrier With Autopilot Engaged
BY Brad Anderson
A Tesla Model X driver has been killed in California after the all-electric luxury SUV slammed into a barrier on U.S. Highway 101.
The crash and subsequent fire occurred earlier in the week, involved two other cars, and killed 38-year-old Walter Wong, an Apple engineer, who was driving the Tesla. The electric automaker has now confirmed that Autopilot was enabled at the time of the crash, Reuters reports.
In a blog post, Tesla said: “Autopilot was engaged with the adaptive cruise control follow-distance set to minimum.” In the seconds leading up to the fatal impact, numerous visual and an audible hands-on warning instructed the driver to put their hands back on the steering wheel.
“The driver had about five seconds and 150 meters of unobstructed view of the concrete divider with the crushed crash attenuator, but the vehicle logs show that no action was taken,” the blog post continued.
Tesla hasn’t said why Autopilot failed to detect the concrete divider.
Authorities start investigation
Both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the fatal crash.
The first confirmed fatal crash to have occurred when Autopilot was introduced happened in mid-2016. Upon investigating that incident, the NTSB said that Tesla should have taken further steps to prevent the system’s misuse.
In the aforementioned blog post, Tesla admitted that Autopilot is not perfect, but asserts that it makes driving safer.
“Autopilot does not prevent all accidents – such a standard would be impossible – but it makes them much less likely to occur. It unequivocally makes the world safer for the vehicle occupants, pedestrians and cyclists.”
This tragic incident comes less than two weeks after a Volvo XC90 operated by Uber, that was on autonomous mode, killed a woman cyclist in Arizona.

I wonder why Elon and the Shareholders don't worry about the safety reputation of Tesla. Lithium Ion batteries + self driving cars = What could go wrong? See picture above for results.

haa haa haa...fuking losers

Apparently a lot of people are willing to put down lots of money just to become guinea pigs for Tesla.

So it said there were warnings for five seconds and the dude didn't grab the wheel and change direction? Sounds to me like he was asleep. Reminds me of the joke a few threads ago by Big Al about his grandad dying peacefully in his sleep.
Anyway, my GMC has a seat vibration and lights that flash on the bottom of the windshield if I get too close to a car while driving or if I cross a solid line. That's literally milliseconds and I correct myself if I'm not just being and asshole and tailgating. This dude must've been on his phone or something.
-
remember the good old days when driving took most of your attention? You would actively drive? Sure, there was changing the radio station, talking to a passenger, or sliding a matchbook under the 8 track but people weren't texting, reading newspapers or putting on makeup at 60 mph

It's not a level 5 self driving car
Second: the barrier had been hit earlier (days or weeks) so was almost completely removed / destroyed by the earlier accident
Local government, or who ever was responsible, should have repaired it sooner
Model X is a very safe car, for an SUV a very low centre of gravity

Yeah Telsa say dude didn’t have his hands on wheel for 6 seconds before crash. This is why we can’t have nice things. Some dumass has to ruin it for all for us.

Further proves that Asians are the worst drivers on the planet (excluding Haitians). An Asian behind the wheel of a self-driving car. What could go wong?

Victim had reported that the vehicle would veer to that barrier and several occasions.

No one is worse than women drivers! No one
You prob never been to Italy or Russia then ;D
-
Electric and self driving are great concepts
Teslas are overrated cars, piss poor build quality that people buy up cause of Hollywood and smart marketing like the Prius was hyped, both pieces of garbage

I agree. Worst combo is an Asian woman by far in the U.S.

Nope, Chinese male & females :P, bloody catastrophic on the roads.
-
unfortunately it seems the vital point of us not being able to automate driving has been missed.
Today is primitive vs 5yrs from now. Im in this sector and they massively oversell the car's ability to self drive when it fails to detect things or veers off its path because the data is bad.
-
Apparently a lot of people are willing to put down lots of money just to become guinea pigs for Tesla.
Elon Musk has a huge fan base.
Go to any tech/startups forum, he's basically the Arnold of techpreneurs.
-
Tesla will be bankrupt soon.

Didn't they get Consumer reports highest rating?

Autonomous cars will encourage people to be more neglectful (already we saw that the driver of the Uber was looking down), while "riding" and throughout their lives. There is this constant mantra that "humans are the weak link", and "human error are the cause for accidents, so remove the human". So less humans driving, means less accidents. So, self driving cars can be marketed as being for your own good. Is this sounding familiar? It should. And take a guess at which side/ideology would be pushing this?
-

They just recalled half their current cars. Which makes me actually want to buy one, because it could be the future delorean. ;D
-
Didn't they get Consumer reports highest rating?
Not in build quality with the cheap materials they use, for the price they charge
Go sit in a 7 Series and S class Mercedes and then the tesla, tesla looks so cheap and not luxury at all
-
Nope, Chinese male & females :P, bloody catastrophic on the roads.
Like I said go to Russia or parts of Italy....
-
tesla has a massive amount of debt its all hype.
-
What good is auto pilot if you're supposed to be alert and vigilant? Might as well have the wheel in your hand then.

you got that right not to mention 5 seconds is not that long

That is the way caddys and nissan versions work. nothing is level 5 yet.

I own a Tesla and usually I curl up in the back seat and take an anabolic power nap. Tesla is a great car for recovery.
-
The problem is that some people have been infected by the Elon bug and won't understand that Autopilot is not fully functioning.
-
One Tesla fails after millions of hours of auto-piloting b/c of a moron. Do you blame Porsche or Paul Walker's moron buddy for doing 100mph over 15mph speed bumps?

I look forward to getting a model S in the future

I actually do have a friend who owns one and we have talked a lot about this. Maybe one day but they are not even close to full auto and you don't take your eyes off the road. What it is good for is "seeing" things before you do so you can react sooner. You can't react if you're reading a book. ;D

This! Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of self-driving tech. The sooner people who shouldn't be allowed to drive get off the road, the better, but right now Autopilot makes people behave even more recklessly, like texting while driving.
-
Tesla will be bankrupt soon.
I've been saying the same thing for 3 or 4 years now.

The Prius is more reliable than most German cars....focussing on less polluting gas-hybrids was not a hype by Toyota. But a wise choice
Much better approach imo than illegal software running filthy German diesels built by arrogant animal gas chamber experimenting manufacturers.....
Tesla is a decent company.
Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, BMW/Mercedes are not

Photos of the removed / damaged / unrepaired barrier, prior to the Model X crash:
https://electrek.co/2018/03/30/tesla-autopilot-fatal-crash-data/
is that's a solid concrete barrier it will be difficult to survive such a hit in any car...
-
Ha ha
That’s Hilarious -
And she read them out live on air with serious voice
And no one questioned the names beforehand !!

I blame paul's moron dumbass buddy for going 100 in a residential area on dry rotted 10 year old tires, in a street legal race car. Yeah, it really sucks that a few stupid asshats ruin shit for the rest of us.

i worked for a place that did alot of orders for tesla, tesla does not pay its bills on time as well, they do not have much cash on hand, tesla is a joke it loses money on every model it makes.
gm is making more profit of its volt than shitty ass tesla

Exactly.
I've also been saying to look to short any company with SJW/Leftist principles going forward.
Not an iron clad strategy at this point but something worth considering when selecting your stocks.
-
hindsight is 20/20 but it seems to me that a company like Tesla would hire some top notch people for these test cars. The last thing you want is something like this to happen so someone with a prior felony wouldn't likely be the best choice. I don't know what they were looking down at but had they been watching as they were likely hired to do, someone would be alive and this PR nightmare wouldn't be happening.

you got that right it is still baffling to me there stock is trading at such a high number, they do not make any profit at all , they burn through cash and are billions in debt i fail to see how they will even turn a profit or even get out of debt for that matter.

X2
They are billions in debt
Not making profit
Spending vast sums of £
Supplier owed big monies
Poor build quality
And they are a “Successful” Business
Hmmm sounds like a lot of people are going to be financially hurt very badly
Or is there something I’ve missed.
