Title: CPAP - WTF
Post by: El Diablo Blanco on May 17, 2018, 07:18:40 AM
I have had a sleep study done recently. Turns out I stop breathing about 15-30 times an hour, the max at one point was 65 seconds.  Pretty scary shit.  The Doctor sent me to a Sleep Center to get a CPAP.  I've read the threads on here and saw how man of steele claims how his life has changed and got excited about the positive outcomes for myself.

I go and they initially wanted to force me to use a nasal pillow first.  I tell the bitch I don't breathe from my nose but she insists I try it.  She tells me to close my mouth and start breathing through my nose.  About 10 breaths in I start to feel like I'm drowning and panic and rip it off. She then still insists I try it and gives me a different nose piece.  Same shit, same reaction.  Then we try the mouth cover thing.  I put it on and it seems more comfortable except for the strap over and around the back of my head and my chin.  I felt like Bane.  The air was cool breathing in and it seemed to be okay.  They send me home and tell me to try it when working and shit to get used to it.  I tried it for an hour and it seemed fine.

At night I usually fall asleep right away, never had issues falling asleep but had issues staying asleep.  I strap this thing on and try to get comfortable.  I usually sleep on my stomach but that's impossible with the mask since it gets pushed into my face or over away from my mouth.  So now I can't get comfortable.  I try to lay on my back and the more I breath, the more refreshed I get.  Instead of sleeping or wanting to sleep I find myself getting more and more awake.  I struggle for 3 hours to sleep, I think I nodded off a couple times and woke up panicked like I was chocking and ripped the mask off my face.  Finally I gave up and went to sleep normally and get a few hours in. Felt like shit all day.

Midday I'm dying tired so I try it on and see if I can nap.  Nope, it just refreshes me again and makes me feel more alert and awoke.  the rest of the day I felt fine.  Back to bed, this time I pop a valium which always knocks me out in like 5 minutes.  I lay there and 2 hours withe the mask on, even try the ramp function which starts low and increases but hours pass by and no sleep.  I feel awake and not tired.  I take it off and sleep within minutes without it.

How the fuck is anyone supposed to sleep with this shit?  All of the fucking straps and mask and constant cool air being pumped into my mouth and nose doesn't seem like a good way to pass out.  Anyone else try these CPAPs and felt the same?  Anyone have tips on what might work?

I got one about 8 months ago. I have the nasal pillows it takes time to get use too. Get yourself a good pillow learn to be still and sleep on your back. It's healthier for your spine. I can sleep through the night with mine now. Very worth it.

I know what you're going through, as I went through the same thing when I got mine.  However, it does get better.  It took me about a week to get used to it, and now I wouldn't sleep without it.  Most people struggle with it at first, its normal.  Just concentrate on taking in nice deep, slow breaths, and before you know it you will be asleep, and wake up feeling refreshed in the morning.  On a side note, tell your doctor you want a prescription for Provigil(Modafinil), as you have a diagnosis of sleep apnea so your insurance will cover it.  You'll never be tired again between using the CPAP and Provigil.

Agree but man it sucks getting 1/2 nights sleep for the past two nights.  Making me all depressed and shit.  I'm going to keep trying to nap and eventually sleep with it on.  Not sure why it seems to wake me up instead of helping me sleep.

It amazes me that they seem to prescribe a CPAP or APAP right away in the US. I went from 14 to less than 1 breathing stops/hour, using an apnea mouth device.

My neighbour has the CPAP. You just wear it every night it until you're so tired, you will fall asleep with it.
Then you cannot sleep without it....just like drugs.

The only reason why I don't sleep on my stomach is because of the stiff back pain the next morning..

Did you try both or straight to the mouthpiece?  How does it work? Just seems to keep the mouth open the whole time.

Yeah it is a scam for sure.  Bitch nurse said that insurance won't cover it unless I average 4 hours per day with it so she says if I can't use it sleeping then use it when awake watching TV.  What benefit is that to me?  They just want the fucking money.

The thing doesn't make me tired, seems to invigorate me.  Maybe I don't get enough oxygen in the first place.

No, but I would love to try a CPAP for 1-2 weeks, since I've heard so many good stories, like those from Stan Efferding. This will also answer the question if it's a scam or not.

You start with a neutral offset between your lower and upper jaw. During the starting phase you adjust it by lengthening the distance between both jaws (the lower one shifts forward). Once you're at a certain offset, which feels still comfortable, your tongue isn't able to cover your throat almost completely (i.e. almost blocking the air circulation).

It fits like a normal sized mouth piece, so you're still able to breath 100% via your nose, which is better anyway.

Yes, and beside me. I feel it may help my back though actually, much like a back bend or hyper extension. My back hurts no matter what. I usually just toss and roll around until I fall asleep.

I found the nasal pillows to be less obtrusive than any of the masks.  I use a chin strap to keep my mouth closed.

As for snoring while on your back....the cpap is supposed to keep you from snoring...If you are using a full face mask, your mouth is opening while you sleep.

Before the cpap, I would find the sheets and blankets to be all in dissaray upon getting up...All tired too...if you are waking up suddenly out of breath and feeling claustraphobic, that means the pressure needs to be turned up...you are still apneaing

You had a mild index.  JADs don't have really good success rates.

The pressure helps stabilize the uvula, in which its' vibration is a major component of snoring.

A Full Face mask pushes down in the lower jaw, forcing you to mouth breath.  Smart move to go with a nasal mask and chin strap even if you are a severe ventor.  In most cases over time patients can sleep with the venting, as long as there are no associated arousals.

And that of course is a bullshit claim. In Finland they used to do snoring treatments where they remove whole uvula, but they stop that because it doesn't have any effect of snoring. The real major component is fat which narrow your airways, or massive tonsils, limp palate etc. Just for snoring there is a RFA treatment, if you have the sleep apnea, you need more than that, like CPAP.

No I didn't, but keeping my jaw forward made all the difference. No cpap now for about 4 years.

People can and do die suddenly in their sleep from sleep apnea, but sleep apnea also causes many health problems that can lead to death such as atrial fibrillation, which causes higher incidence of stroke, it causes hypertension, CHF, pulmonary hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, heart attack, etc.  So no, its not a scam industry.

You can have a snore w/out apnea but I'll pretend otherwise for getbig. This site has to lead the internet in cluster fucks!

Try pillows and stop complaining. Accumulation can take up to 3 weeks.  If you have positive pressure issues request BiPAP.

If you wake up heart racing and out of breath, you need to increase
the pressure...it's counter intuitive in that respect.

As for not being able to fall asleep...they tried to make me use a mask that covered my nose...They said that masks are more effective and they had a policy against nose pillows. I could feel my breath on the tip of my nose...That was a deal breaker for me.  I could only make pillows with a chin strap work for me...Also pillows help open the nostrils with the pressure...a mask won't do that.

You get used to it. How high is your pressure set? Mine used to be super high until I got my deviated septum fixed. That was super hard to sleep with, now the pressure is low, so it doesn’t bother me. It feels like a seat belt, put it on before you sleep.

Nothing to do with fat for me.  My neck is 20 1/2.  Doc told me to stop working traps.  I went into the doctor and yes there are all sorts of old and fat people there.  In my case it's just large neck and muscles in my neck area.  While waiting in the reception area, fat guy after fat guy comes in and I just sit there feeling disgusted that I'm in a room with these people and associated with the same issue, but fat or muscle doesn't matter, all that extra weight when laying down can cause your throat to close when everything is relaxed.

There are lots of factors that cause obstructive breathing, even enlarged tonsils.  Obesity is correlated to sleep apnea but is not directly associated with it.  Many skinny people snore.

Mouth devices might work but most of the time they Don't work.  Surgery does NOT work most of the time.  However, after surgery you can use lower pressures in your CPAP machine.

I do this stuff for a living, believe it or not hehe..

Fat is only one factor. Lots of people have cpaps that aren’t fat. I’m one of them.  Cpaps are common in people that workout and actually built muscle.

Been told by many girls I stop breathing in my sleep and women up by quite a few hitting me in the face to wake me up and even my Ex trying to give me mouth to mouth ffs. I suspect they won't give sleep meds during a sleep study, which means I'd likely not sleep at all all night. :/

Being over weight is huge reason for snoring. Not the only one.

And snoring and sleep apnea are two different things. Not all over weight people who snore have sleep apnea and some very thin people who don't snore have sleep apnea.

I got maybe 2 hours of sleep in my sleep study.  The whole setup was uncomfortable but in those two hours they found I stopped breathing about 15 times on my side and close to 30 when I was on my stomach and one point I stopped for 65 seconds straight.  So they will get some results from you.

You will so know the first morning when you get it right...

Also, your blood pressure issues will get a lot better.

Also also...the newer machine are what are called "self titrating" which means a computer can detect when you need more pressure and adjust...which means, within narrow limits, weight changes won't throw anything off.

I got maybe 2 hours of sleep in my sleep study.  The whole setup was uncomfortable but in those two hours they found I stopped breathing about 15 times on my side and close to 30 when I was on my stomach and one point I stopped for 65 seconds straight.  So they will get some results from you.

Sleep on your stomach?? How TF do you manage that? I'd suffocate lol

I hope so. A week now and I’ve barely gotten through a couple hours. Can’t sleep with it on.  Fucking sucks because I want it to work.

I was diagnosed last year. The diagnostic showed I was struggling an amazing amount of times during the night. I Knew something was wrong when my wife was complaining about the snoring and I was always tired during the day. My wife would say there was times when I wouldn't breath for half a minute or more. The motivation for me was when I would dream I was drowning and couldn't get air. I went through 3 masks before I found one I could get used to. The nose type was no good I'm a mouth breather. I hung in, and when I found the right fit I took my time, 1 hr, for a week, 2 hours for a week, until I could stand it for the night. I can tell you a year later, it's night and day. There are times when I'm traveling when I don't have the gear that I can tell the difference when I wake up. All I can say is keep trying masks, don't force it, if you get to where you want to take it off  then do it, and work your way into 8 hours

PS. Cudos for bringing this up on Getbig, not everyone wants to help.

My goal now is to get through an hour or two nap with it on during the day.  Better with a nap than fucking up my sleep at night. Now I have a new mask. Like a fighters pilot mask. Bulky but easier to breathe.  It’s not even the masks that bother me but is the straps across the top of the head back of the head and across the face. Like a hand squeezing my head. I bet people that wear hats have an easier time with this.

The straps don't bother me.. I just tighten it enough to get a seal... if you are laying down when you adjust it, you can use less pressure to get it to seal. My issue is I sleep on my side and during the night I'll break the seal if I'm not careful. But other than that, I forget I have it on. And you'll probably find yourself imitating Tom Cruise in Top Gun for about a week, or until your significant other slaps you in the head.

As a bigger man I'm considered at high risk for apnea. Did the sleep study, was given a Resmed S10 machine and a Mirage Quattro mask. Most of the various women I sleep with are put off by it at first, but I don't give a damn. I tell them "don't like it? There's the door"

Who's gimmick is this? ;D

Being over-weight often causes sleep apnea issues.

You don't have to be fat either, just carrying too much weight even if it's muscle.

If my weight gets up too high I snore and have breathing issues.  If I drop the weight those problems go away.

This. At my size, with this kind of neck circumference due to endless heavy deadlifts and neck harness work, the doc explained the extra muscular size is actually choking me out while I sleep. Hey, I'll do anything for size and strength. Including being chained to a CPAP machine every night

mike asked me to post his pic for him since he does not know how

I'm not reading a book

That's it.  Your basically killing yourself though by carrying that size.

If killing yourself makes sense...carry on.

My doctor told me to stop doing shoulder and trap exercises. That it will help with breathing when I sleep.  Oh well

If there were a nuclear holocaust occuring outside, I would still be in the gym working shoulders and shrugs. Fuck that doctor. He sounds like a miserable bag of bones who couldn't complete a single pushup.

His doc is sub 4% at 235. He has won numerous pushup contests, you're embarrassing yourself with these posts.
