Yankees have been winning, but they are still not playing up to their potential. But some of their rookies have exceeded expectations. Yankees can beat the best teams even while playing only at 80%. Yankees Triple A team could probably beat a lot of major league teams. Bird comes back this week.

The Yankees are a force and will be for awhile now.
Trade Florial/Sheff/Frazier for Syndergaard.
Sign Harper.
Win for a decade.

Baseball is a horribly boring sport to watch.
Does anyone actually watch a full game from their home?

I watch. But never a full game. I usually watch the first 3-4 innings.

Part of the problem with watching a game from home is the announcing teams have a LOT to do with how watchable a game is on tv and some are absolute garbage.

The Yankees have put together a roster that is powerful in all areas. Their weakest parts (starting pitchers and overall team defense) is still better than average and they have such a potent offense that they can outscore the opposition even if their pitching and defense falters.
Brian Cashman is a genius the way he has amassed some high prospects when he realized the team was out of the postseason picture and big name free agents and/or trade acquisitions was the way that The Boss always built a champion ship team. But Cashman has been able to utilize home grown talent, can't-miss prospects they traded for and the super stars to make this a formidable roster than nothing short of a World Series championship should be expected.
I am far from jumping on the Yankees bandwagon. As a matter of fact, I'm a native NYer who has always been a Mets fan. But as a sportswriter, I look at everything objectively and the Yankees are simply a great organization.

Great assessment Joe.
Cashman has acquired good to elite talent on multiple fronts, basically giving up nothing. Making an HoF case if this team wins a few.

As much as I always root for the Yankees (as much as Met fan could... but they always suck so...)
STARTING PITCHING wins championships.... PERIOD... end of story
Fck hitting.... thats to fill the seats and sell tickets.

so you're saying that the Astros will repeat as world series champs?
40 years later, another Game 163 between the Yankess & Red Sox for the division would be fun.

Boston will beat the Yanks (because of pitching) in the playoffs
WS: Boston vs Astros

Surprisingly Tanaka is pretty clutch in the post season and has pitched well, Severino hasn’t and it’ll be a test for him, CC and Gray.....but overall I think pitching will lose it for them come post season

I was 10 years old that year and would go to the stadium for games quite a bit. Randolph, Rivers, Dent, Jackson, etc, etc... great memories.

i was at the stadium when tom tresh hit 3 homers the first game of a dbhdr... i was there when jeter got his 3000 th hit... i saw a-rod get his 2000 th rbi... that was at camden yards though..

What ever happened to baseball..?
Those days are long gone... seemed like so much fun, everyone was in it for a ring, teams stuck together, each team was a TEAM with their own personality whether you liked them or hated them...
Baseball sucks now and I can't watch a single inning let alone a 9 inning game.
Yet back then I would happily watch 2 sucky teams play a full game

Thx, bro. And I totally agree on Cashman being enshrined one day under those circumstances.

Wrong - if that happened to Boston it would be wonderful. Either way, NY should win the division by a handful. Boston’s lineup is weak in their bottom half, and their bullpen isn’t stellar outside of Kimbrel.

When Tanaka comes back, I bet that the Yankees send Gray to the bullpen. In a super close division race, Gray will not be allowed to pitch much... if at all.

NY's philosophy of less fastballs may have been hurting him. I think he'd been throwing them 33% of the time or something. Last night was 47%, and he was great.

Lead MLB in HRs and are in second place in team OPS by one percentage point. Doing this with basically three rookies in the IF.
#1 starter is top five in baseball, maybe higher.
Bullpen statistically on pace to be the best ever.

Something like this:
Andjuar / Frazier + pitching prospect
Or a combo of Frazier / Florial / Sheffield / Acevedo / Andujar / Abreu / Tate, etc....
They are perfect trade partners - Mets need a reboot, Yanks need an ace, and Yankees have the players to move.

Even by met standards, this year has been a debacle for them. Hard to see giving the yankees the final piece to a championship puzzle. If it meant keeping the yankees from the ultimate prize, even to improve themselves in the process, the mets would do it.

I used to think that, but there's been a growing media presence pointing out to the Mets that they're idiots if they go this route.
Fanbase would get over it once they saw the talent they get.

It was very odd that the Yankees had a Triple A pitcher make his MLB debut against the Red Sox yesterday. One of the most important games of the year. I do like that Chance Adams was calm and relaxed in front of a hostile crowd, in game that had a “playoff” feel to it. I could be mistaken but I think that Chance was sent back to Triple A today.

He did have a nice ab sunday night, to his credit. Thats more than I can say for Luke Void. Still think Torreyes should be up here.

Why would he do that?
I’m not sure if Chapman is 100% healthy from the tendinitis around his knee area. He had 2 blown saves recently.... prior to that he was lights out

John Sterling’s home run call for Miguel Andujar

I’m not sure if Chapman is 100% healthy from the tendinitis around his knee area. He had 2 blown saves recently.... prior to that he was lights out
How would moving him to the 7th mitigate injury related performance?
DL, yes. But changing his role would not make sense due to a few hiccups. All closers have nights like this.
-
Stanton is kicking ass. He hit another home run tonight. Plus a Grand Slam last night. And I think that he may have homered the night before. Stanton hit at least one home run over the Green Monster in Boston, plus several doubles in that series.. when the rest of the team looked lost.
Supposedly, tonight’s home run had the fastest exit velocity ever.
Put Judge back in there, and these two can carry the team into the playoffs and win at least one series.
And yes, I thought that the pitching was bad against The Orioles and Red Sox, but I’m getting my confidence back in these pitchers
-
Yeah, that shot he hit was a monster. 121.7 mph
http://m.mlb.com/video?content_id=2365978783&game_pk=531141
-
Stanton hit another HR today. And Yankees won. Another shaky 9th inning for Chapman. Bases were loaded in the 9th, go-ahead runs were on-base, but he struck out the final batter
Britton had another rough outing. Thankfully, Andujar was “Gettin’ Miggy With It”
-
I think Britton is just rusty and needs to pitch more to get his control back. His stuff looks unhittable when he's on.
Chapman could be concerning, but have to give today a pass since it was a downpour.
-
Damn, Stanton just hit another Home Run... that’s 5 HR’s in the last 6 games
🌋

Just what we don’t need, Didi on the DL

You're likely right.
However, Boston's trotting out a shitty half a lineup, a shitty bullpen, and a coin toss SP after their #1.
Yet they keep winning. Baseball says it should catch up to them. But who knows?

Big difference.

McCutchen headed to NY

After this move it would be hard to justify Robinson sniffing the lineup again this year as a starter.
Who am I kidding, this is the 2018 Yankees. Someone will likely "need a day" or "feel funny". "Sore taint" etc.
-
They've had their full lineup of Hicks / Judge / Stanton / Sanchez / Andujar / Torres / Didi / Gardner / Bird 3 times the entire year.
If they're healthy for the playoffs, that's a tough lineup to beat.
-
Bird was/is supposed to be the 1B for the next decade. :-\
Has he played a full season yet? Send him to the fall league if hes healthy.

That's a good idea.
For years, Cashman said he's the best hitter in the system. I think he's just had a tough run. I saw him in ST last year and he made hard contact on every single swing.

I would consider moving Andujar to first and signing Machado.

Sanchez looks like he's been laying off the coffee cakes.
And basic catcher fundamentals.

Didn't know you read RAB.
I think this team will get healthy and peak at the right time.
Just need to get by that one game playoff.

He thinks he'll be back. Minor tear.

Tropicana field so damn ghetto, bullpen on the field of play, fly balls hitting the roof/ralling etc. What a dump.

Not a bad throw.

Happ, Tanaka or Sevy. Still no word yet.
If i'm betting I think they go with Tanaka, seems to come up big in high pressure games.

In all seriousness, it should be. If he's not right, they're not going far anyway.
Apparently fangraphs has an article up on how Oakland struggles with 95+ so there's that too.

He's been shaky at best this year, plus I read tanaka had better #'s against oak. Its a gamble for sure.
I don't think the yankees have a real #1. Sevy was touted as a #1, results say otherwise. :-\

He definitely the ace of this staff. I just feel like tanaka has been so reliable in the post-season.

He definitely the ace of this staff. I just feel like tanaka has been so reliable in the post-season.
Agree - it’s just that his last 2 starts weren’t encouraging. He gets swings outside the zone but the As don’t swing at those pitches. Bad matchup.
-
I'm hard.
-
Team appears to be as healthy as they've been all year at game 163 ???
- Elsbury was never going to be a factor
- frazier played 15 games
- montgomery out since may 1st
You can't really ask for more than that.
-
I think they had what they envisioned to be their starting lineup on the field less than 10 times all year.
Now they have it, and there are zero breaks in it. 1-9 are all HR threats. Can't believe the Voit train is still rolling.
Boone actually made two great moves - going to Betances and the defensive move with Andujar.
Both paid off nicely.
Imagine if they add Harper to replace Gardner or Cutch?
-
I agree Voit has been a force of nature. All Cashman btw. Shreve and I forget who for Voit's production. Hilarious.
I'm gonna miss Gardner if he does go.
Whats left of the 09' roster? CC, Robertson and Gardner? Any coaches?
-

Rothschild?
Think about the whole Yankees team and what they cost:
1b: Voit for Shreve and Gallegos......so nothing
2b: Torres for nothing - the Chapman moves from start to finish one of the greatest sequences for a GM
3B: Andujar - IFA so nothing
SS: Didi - Shane Greene - nothing
LF: Cutch/Gardner - cost nothing
CF: Big Dick Hicks - John Ryan Murphy - nothing
RF: Judge - draft - nothing.
Guy has been a wizard.

You grind it out for 162 games over 6 months and (need lots of depth) and the opening playoff series is just best 3 out of 5? :-\ The Division Series should be 4 out of 7.

1-1 :o
Expected to see Randy Johnson in his prime for game 1, he didn't pitch like it but they still lost.

Just a bad game at a bad time.
-
I blame all this on Stanton 100%
He came up 2x in 2 games in 2 HUGE spots and struck out both times.....
A true MVP type player, one that gets paid the big bucks will step up in those times...
To not even put the ball in play either of those times is unforgivable and not something a $$$$ star does.
He truly sucks.
In the first game he came up with the bases loaded, no outs and struck out
In last nights game he came up with 2 runners on base, no outs and struck out
F' Stanton
-
How much heat is Aaron Boone getting? (And how much do you think is deserved?)

Stanton was awful, but three starters in four games had terrible starts. That's it. The thing is, they almost overcame two of them.

Watched him pitch all year as Seattle is pretty local TV for me..
#3 starter at best... no clue why they threw money at him.
No stamina and an injury waiting to happen + giving away one of your top prospects?...
WOW
---3.76 ERA against mostly AL West teams and half of his starts at pitcher-friendly Safeco basically amounts to 4.50 ERA against mostly AL East competition and half of his starts at bandbox Yankee Stadium.
When will Cashman learn to stop acquiring NL or AL West pitchers with inflated stats in pitcher-friendly parks?
It didn't work with Michael Pineda. It didn't work with Sonny Gray. What makes you think it would work with Paxton?
So the Yankees got another #3 pitcher to complement their rotation full of #3 Pitchers
-
He does not project to be a #3 starter at best. Sure, there's risk, but the potential is that he could be a monster.
https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-yankees-now-have-a-second-ace/
Pineda and Gray were unsuccessful for different reasons, Pineda seriously struggled with command, something Paxton doesn't seem to have an issue with.
James Paxton throws hard, and he throws strikes, and he misses bats. He doesn’t allow that much loud contact. One reason he’s somewhat unknown, or underappreciated, is the fact he’s pitched for Seattle. The other reason is that he’s had injuries. The injuries are the lone blemish, as Paxton has never proven himself a workhorse.
NY gave up a starter with control issues, who was not slated to be part of the rotation. Paxton is a pretty major upgrade.
From a overall standpoint, the Yankees traded a season and a half of Andrew Miller for Paxton and Clint Frazier. That's a haul.
-
We could've used Cano's lefty bat. Just sayin.
After days of rumblings and speculation, talks between the Mariners and Mets reached a crescendo Thursday on a blockbuster trade that would bring Robinson Cano and stud closer Edwin Diaz to Citi Field, allowing new general manager Brodie Van Wagenen to potentially strengthen his lineup and bullpen in one swoop.
According to sources, the framework of a deal has been reached and a trade between the two teams could become official as soon as Friday. The Mets are prepared to send Jay Bruce and Anthony Swarzak to the Mariners with former first-round draft picks Jarred Kelenic and Justin Dunn and likely Gerson Bautista. Van Wagenen on Thursday began informing Mets players included in the deal to prepare for a possible trade.

Seattle sure seems like a farm team for the rest of the league since Big Lou left....
What was it 2001? since then its been their motto to acquire or develop talent and give it away to the rest of the league..lol
Why would the Mets want Cano's contract?
-
I don't understand the Cano thing at all.
Mets are giving up their two best prospects Kelenic and Dunn, and picking up a 36 year old expensive ex roid guy. While Cano will probably have decent seasons, Mets could have kept the prospects and signed any one of the elite relief arms.
Of course, they could likely swap Diaz for a serious haul at the trade deadline, should they not be in contention.
As for the Yankees, no way on Cano......Harper's out there, and fits perfect.
-

if you were the yankees GM and had your choice would you rather have a 26 year old bryce harper for 300 plus million for 10 years or a 20 year old juan soto for next to nothing for the next 5 years????
-
Harper's out there, and fits perfect.
Yes please! Don't want Manny.
-
Harper = lifetime .279 hitter with a big ego, injuries, can barely drive in 100 RBIs if he's lucky, average home run hitter, strikes out 100+ times, and will command $30mil a season..
Actually sounds perfect for the Yankees.... never mind

But there's no chance of that.

RBIs are product of opporutnity.
And a batting average of .279 doesn't mean shit when the OBP is around .400 and the slugging is over .500.
Harper's problem is that he's had two elite years, 3 good ones, and a meh. But if he's done this all by 26, he projects to be much better as he hits his statistical prime.
Given that, Machado's a better fit for NY, due to Didi's injury and Andujar's poor defense.
-
Cashman said he wants "no part" of Harper "sweepstakes"
Cashman's gotta go.
(just kidding.)
Or am I?

I never believe any of this...it's just posturing.
But now is the time to build a super team....they have the money. No stupid budget shit.
But never on Cashman leaving - what he's done is ridiculous - Stanton/Hicks/Didi/Voit/Greene/Torres/Robertson all everyday, above average players acquired for nothing. Judge/Severino/Betances/Andjuar all above average players from the farm. Sanchez comeback would add to this. The run he's had has been insane. But now is the time to build the team that contends for the next decade.

How do you do that if the caliber of pitcher you need to compete at WS level just isn't there.
Yankees starters and their "great" bullpen proved in the last WS they can't be relied upon

They absolutely have the caliber of pitched needed. Heck, Boston won a WS when their ace pitched like crap the whole time. Playoffs are about timing and luck, in addition to skill - any player can get hot at the right time. Having better players increases the chances of that happening.
2 potential aces +Tanaka is pretty great in the postseason. Also - Kluber/Thor possibilities, as well as mid-season pickups.
That pitching staff should be one of the best in the AL.
-
Los Yankees now have a number cero. Si o no?

Harper grades out as a shitty outfielder as well. Shame on anyone who gives this fucker 30 million per season or a ten year deal.

Funny how out of all the MLB fans.. not a single one wants him or lazy fcker Machado on their team..LOL
Yet every day all I read in the sports mags, TV or sports websites is how both Harper and Machado are like Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth and Joe D all rolled into one..
WTF?
Check all the comments on articles about these fckers... no fan of any team wants anything to do with them
truly.. truly hope.. both these 2 remain unsigned and have to sit out the season

How is this possible.
I thought originally it was just players being lucky in small samples, but Cashman seems to be onto something here. 20 person analytics department that seems to have a crazy success rate in identifying high potential players.
Feels like a new moneyball to an extent.

Neither are bad players by a long shot. But, both are flawed and overrated. And grossly overpaid. I was hoping baseball teams would have learned a lesson and stopped doling out these ridiculous long term contracts. If I was a GM, my policy would be 5-7 year contracts at the most, depending on the players age. Under 25, I'd go 7 years. Over 25-29 it would be 5 years max. Over 30 would be 3 years max.

Its the freakin' money they are paid that bothers me.... NO reason for this and I'm sure plenty of fans feel the same.. way to keep pissing off your base MLB
Fans would rather see minor league'rs be given a shot than to pay .250avg hitters that kind of dough
-
The players get paid because the revenue they generate affords the teams to do so. The Phillies sold something like 18M in additional tickets after Harper was signed.
If Bryce Harper got 15M per instead of 30M, that 15M goes into the owner's pocket.
You won't get it back in the form of lower ticket prices or concessions.
Best not to let it bother you.

I agree with you. The players generate the revenue for the owners. I have no issue with "bloated" salaries. I just think the long term contracts are stupid. In recent years, those long term contracts have hurt the Phillies and in recent years have hamstrung my Detroit Tigers.

100% aligned, also with your post a couple up on Harper/Machado.
And the evidence against LTDs is huge. They rarely work out. The problem is, some GM will always commit to it to win now and deal with the decline on the back end later.
Tigers? Trade us Boyd please.

Paxton, no.
Paxton will be good.

Good thing they aren't paying him very much ::)

AAV for luxury tax is $21M, so they aren't.
But am sick of him being hurt.

I hope they can pull out this series. I am Houston'd out.

I hear you.
I figured NY would be down 2-1 before the series based on the matchups.
BUT, it's really frustrating for them to be so close in both losses, where one thing could have changed the game.
Didi missed a grand slam by a very small margin....etc......it's tough.
Beating Houston was always going to be a tall order.

1st loss was all on Boone imo
and 2nd one was just brutal as you can't leave 9 men on base against ANY team in the playoffs and expect to even have a chance to win that game no matter who is pitching

I put second loss more on Boone due to the stupidity of batting Gardner third and dropping Torres. What did he do wrong in game 2?

Took out Green when he was dominating.... used WAY too many pitchers WAY too fast and had no choice but to throw HAPP at the end.

I guess he did get too cute with the pen.
But I put that on Ottavino more.
And Sanchez and EE.

Fail.

9 years? WTF????????????
These friggin players are making WAAAY too much money now to swing a bat and throw a ball.
Cops/teachers/firefighters get paid crap but grown men who play a kids game make $1mil a game played
-
The economies of baseball determined that's what it took to get Cole.
Glad NY utilized their financial might.
Not going to bother with comparison to non sports pay. It's a tired, old argument.

Ok, boomer.

Ok, boomer.
I would like Betances back, but won't be broken up.
Cole/Pax/Sev/Tanaka is nasty.
Chap / Green / Otto / Britton / Kahnle is nasty.
DJL / Judge / Torres / Voit / Sanchez / Hicks / Ursh / Stanton / Andujar (DH) is nasty.
They are in good shape.

All those pitchers got rocked in the playoffs
All those hitters couldn't swing a bat in the playoffs
Good thing every other team will be worse this year..lol

Yankees will be fine.
Cole/Tanaka + elite bullpen and offense will pummel enough teams to be good until Pax / German return.
On top of that, they can deal from positions of strength with Frazier/Andujar etc to land another arm, if need be.

Agreed. They will be fine. Maybe they will give my Tigers Frazier and we'll give you guys Matt Boyd.

Stanton.. right on schedule

That's actually a legit interesting trade.

I roll with the Yankees except when they play Detroit. I hope they humiliate the Astros and Red Sox all year long.

They've got their swagger back or so it seems.

Somehow the managed to flip the playoff switch on again.
The lineup is unrelenting, and can wear out pitchers.
Hopefully they can get to Snell or Glasnow, or they could be exited this series. Yankees starting pitching isn't exactly lights out after Cole.
If they do win this one, I don't see any of the remaining teams in the AL besting them in a 4 out of 7.

Agreed. Rays are gonna be tough. Hope the A's beat the Astros. Hope its chippy too. Want to see Correa thrown behind his head.

Yeah, the Astros need to go.
And when the fans return, they're going to really hear it all next year.

Season just around the corner. Tigers have their 1st exhibition game this Sunday. I cannot wait to turn on my car radio and hear the voices of spring. I'll be in Florida at the end of March. I am ordering tickets for the Tigers - Yankees at Steinbrenner Stadium. I'm taking a glove with me and a water bottle. If I notice a camera on us for any reason I am going to pretend I cannot open my water bottle. LOL - SC!

Sweet.
Tampa complex is nice, but I also suggest driving a couple hours to hit the Mets complex, if you can. They have multiple outdoor bars.
-
I'm hoping that the league can get in a full 162 games, and as important, that minor league baseball happens.

I think they are negotiating 154, but agree.

154 would be a great "old school" feel since way back in the old days they played 154 games

True, but you know somebody will be *this close* to some record, only to miss by having the season shortened by 8 games.
-
Disgusting performance tonight. How do you not even show up in a game like this? Against the Red Sox no less. Fucking hate the Sox. Hope Tampa sweeps them.
-
Cole is SHIT 5.0 ERA without the sticky stuff he can no longer use..
Yanks are fcked and the Astros are laughing their asses off
