Anybody remember these things? They were an incredible training aid. Seems like Joe had the patent and all else tied up with that exact design and sadly when he passed away.. nobody associated with him...nor family member took over the business and kept selling them.Does anybody know of anything similar to these? I cant find any used on ebay either.

Let me add some pics of Meeko. Great AAU man. Conditioning like this DOES NOT exist anymore!!!
-
Using those Power Grips!!!
-
i've got a pair, i thought someone is still selling them though..
-
Beyond impressive! Does anybody remember when doing the hamstring/moon pose was deemed "too much" by the orgs and judges? Now look at the mess of thongs, gyrating and pineapple fucking that top guys bring to the stage.
-

I have been looking online for months. Many links that go to nothing. If you know of one...I would appreciate any knowledge of it.

Meeko was great. I’d be intertested those too. I remember those.

Gymnasts use these types of things.
I might have to get something like this because I've had trigger finger issues in the past and my finger joints swell up.
Getting old sucks.

Poor Joe. alot of people have died on various forums over the years. Joe's passing was one of the few that truly saddened me. Good guy. Very obviously unable to cope with life towards the end. It was noticeable in his posts.
that moon pose is often erroneously attributed to Platz.
-
Joe has passed.
Joe's massive thread on Ironage worth its weight in gold is gone from the internet. Shawn Perrine has passed.
Joe's massive thread on MuscleMayhem of equal quality, is gone from the internet. Chad Nicholls does have the full website archived though.
Joe's interview on MidWestChristianBodybuil ding...also gone.
So sad. :(

Joe Meeko was like the poor man's Jeff King. They were both around the same time I believe and neither competed in the IFBB.

Dude has insane conditioning for sure. And the lack of oil is a positive. Too many twits now days over do it with the oil and shit. As bad as Chris Lund did with the cut off shorts, oiled up bodies with "sweat" spritzed on from a spray bottle just to do a photo shoot. With the spotter screaming and straining more than the person lifting the weight was, of course.

those Ironage threads had great information on them. long thread with Serge Nubret too. Meekos thread was very informative and educational. can't believe it's not archived somewhere. that's a real shame.

Who need crap like that while there is products like this:

Original product is called "Versa Gripps", but there is loads of similar at the market with less price..

I still have a pair of those Power Grips that I got years ago and still use them. The straps are starting to tear so I need to get them stitched back up.
Joe was an exceptionally decent and great guy and loved his post and the discussions we had over at
IronAge. He did have one quirk that I never quite got and seemed so out of character with him. He not only insisted that Arnold had calf implants but was just as vehement that Arnold also had pec implants.
He would not back down an inch from this position and was very adamant. He even got a bit perturbed at times and said that because he was a world class bber and interacted personally with Arnold that he knew better. I tried to press him and asked about what year he got those pec implants (though I did not concede they even had them in the late 60s early 70s). I mean, he had huge pecs even as a teen and won the Universe at 20 and the Olympia at 23. How could he have had the money and access to such a procedure at such a young age? And by then he had already peaked and you didn't see much dramatic
changes during his reign.
But he never budge from that position and I never brought it up again.
-
Forgive me for being clueless - but what's the functional difference between these lifting hooks and normal straps? Wouldn't they do the same thing? Curious - never seen a pair before.
-
BEEF, see if any of these are close to your liking: https://www.ebay.com/sch/Helixco_Lifting-Hooks-Straps_W0QQ_dmdZ1QQ_fsubZ11902207QQ_rssZ1QQ_rssstoreZ1QQ_sopZ2
I can personally vouch for Schiek's durability and comfort.
-
BTW - didn't Meeko's wife assault him on more than one occasion?
Anyone with some insight into that?
BEEFY?

pretty much a waste of time in my opinion. might be good for some but normal straps are fine.

I was given a pair of those hooks and was skeptical at first, but for some back movements like chins I felt it better isolated my lats, even more so than when using normal straps.
-

They're great. You can use your hands like hooks so you don't have to squeeze and it gets tighter as you pull on them. Only problem is a lot of the bars and handles are a bit thick for the grip.

damn. I knew his marriage played a big role in his mental health. I had no idea it was that bad. bummer. the wrong woman will fuck u up real good. I still don't get suicide. I guess you just lose the will to live.

The grips with the hooks are garbage. Anything over 500lbs felt liken it was gonna rip my hands off my wrists.
Versa-Grips are the only thing I'd actually spend money on.

if you talked to him you'd think he was the happiest guy in the world, always a smile on his face...you never know what's going on behind the smile... that and the Lyme disease affected him badly..

yeah I spoke (typed) with him at length over on Ironage. nothing personal just training advice. some of the best advice I've ever received about bodybuilding. You are correct. He was TOO happy and it showed. It was his way of coping. unfortunately it wasn't real and didn't work. everything he typed was all caps and exclamation points.always responded to everyone and all questions.

I didn’t know he’d killed himself.
Balance of his mind must of been fcuked up.

IDK, I don't get suicide. some guy's on here knew him well enough to know why he did it. ..... for anyone who knows was there anything fishy about his suicide? I mean with an abusive wife, toxic relationship history of domestic violence and even hospitalization... are we sure she didn't kill him.... it's not as common for a man to be the victim in these cases but if the roles were reversed and the wife wound uop dead with same history of abuse the manner of death would be called into question. homicide vs. suicide. it's easy to make it look self inflicted and I don't know that it's ever been looked into in Joe's case?

Wow. How bizarre. I've knew who Arnold was in 1976. I first met him in 1980 and have beeen in the bodybuilding world since 1977, yes 1977 and I have NEVER heard of "...Arnold having pec implants..." Weird.
-

IMHO, talking back and forth with him for so long, I really think it was the Lyme disease that really
took it's toll. It took a while before he was even correctly diagnosed. The debilitating joint pain, crippling fatigue, sometimes part of his face would be paralyzed and made him looked like he had a stroke. And there's no cure. It was never going to end. And his home life wasn't particularly supportive.
It came as a tragic shock to me when I heard he commited suicide. I was surprised at how much it affected me and the emotional toll it took. He really made such a positive and lasting impression on me.
I was surprised at the bond I felt with him and the positive impression that he made on me even though we never met in person -- something that I had planned to do for sure.
Always planning on doing things.... for sure.

Lot of background there - how was the suicide done,
Is it a case where he may of been murdered?

This is all I could find concerning the production of the Power Grips:
As an adult, Joe was an entrepreneur, inventing and patenting Power Grip, a weightlifting device, over 25 years ago! Once again, Joes Dads involvement with PG was extensive, and now Val and Bob Barker from Avon, Indiana, hold and run that part of Joes Power Grip business, which will continue on. Joe also, at one time, designed and built personal helicopters, then started another business, Pyrotek, selling and putting on fantastic fireworks displays locally where he lived in Hunlock Creek, PA at the time. Joe was a very intuitive businessman, heating his own home with solar panels and using generators.
This quote was taken from an online obituary: https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/mcall/obituary.aspx?n=joseph-john-meeko&pid=137481506
I don't know if the Barker's currently have any involvement, but maybe you can contact them if interested.

I forgot about those personal helicopters! I was totally blown away by the pics he posted of them with him as the pilot. That IronAge site was really a treasure when Shawn ran it. When it got taken over by some old fogeys censoring and banning left and right it really went down hill. That site is actually where
I heard about this site, GetBig. They were always ragging about this site.
Joe was such an exceptional human being. It was just so bizarre about his claim that Arnold had pec implants.

Shawn ran a great site. He kept it clean without being a censor-banning-monger. Shame he's gone too. Shawn was in great shape too. He reminded me of Max Kellerman, boxing analysis and superfan. Shawn was like the Kellerman of bodybuilding.
-
He was on a radio show in my hometown not to long before his tragic end.
We were supposed to meet to grab lunch, and he even told me he brought a few pair of Power Grips. He couldn't have been nicer on the phone.
It was a shame. Great physique. He told me how much he used to eat when competing, and it wasn't exactly what many would deem to be a bodybuilder's diet. It was Italian hoagies, cheesesteaks, etc.

i saw him at the old ponderosa steakhouse in allentown pa...he ate a large quantity of food including ice cream......i saw him training for the mr eastern america contest at the fitness america whitehall pa. [ he needed to win this first to qualify for mr america that year.] he was large but smooth as can be ... two weeks later he was ripped to the bone for the contest and won easily,,,,,

Joe was getting looney at the end on IronAge, if Lyme Disease that to people, thats scary.
Bad tick season here in NH this year, I pull them off my each weekend. (Though Im not sure if deer ticks) but they are tiny..

Recent suicides in the news brought back the recent thread related to Meeko. The obituary his family wrote touched on this with sensitivity. The other interesting thing was the “alleged” paternity of some of the relatives. They left those people in but did not fully admit the blood relationship. People often leave messes behind that families have to figure out how to migrate.
https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/mcall/obituary.aspx?n=joseph-john-meeko&pid=137481506.
And they must have called on Fogarty for the comprehensive competition history. Full respect for his bodybuilding here.

Joe Meeko always would answer any questions or correspondence. On Ironage he would give away the grips for nothing. That's the kind of guy he was. Felt terrible his life spiraled out of control.
To this date Ironage was the best sight on the web for both training advice, pictures and history. I really posted a lot there. I felt Shawn wasn't to fond of me because I called him on his top lifts. There was some infighting between the moderators there. One wrote me and said they discussed making me a moderator but I guess it was shot down. I never asked to be a moderator. It really was amazing how Shawn went from running a small closed site about bodybuilding to being in charge of the biggest bodybuilding publication and appearing on television. Really sad how quickly his health went down hill and quickly he died from cancer. Those that were close to him speak glowingly of him. He had a lot of people who loved him. He was a hardcore trainer. I heard all the archived posts are gone.

I got banned for getting around the swear filter to post the work fuck.
I had developed a rapport with Shawn, and he said he would reinstate me, but at least one of the moderators threatened to leave if I was allowed back to post, so Shawn apologized and had to go with the ban.
The forum was filled with great info, but it was like Chad Nicholls' MuscleMayhem - too censorious. It blows my mind that some people think speech can be controlled in the age of the internet.
I did check, and unfortunately what oldtimer1 said was correct - there is no archive.
Chad Nicholls' has a full archive of MuscleMayhem though.
Joe Meeko had two major threads, and a huge interview online:
- Ironage
- MuscleMayhem
- Interview on Midwest Christian Bodybuilding
All three are gone. Luckily, as said, Mayhem is archived, and the Internet Archive may have a copy of Joe's interview there. I am a pretty diligent guy, and would be surprised if I hadn't checked...but I'm not sure if I did.
Sad...Joe gave so much in those two threads, but both forums hosting them are now offline.
Check my website, Bodybuilding Pro, and go to the Video Reviews menu on the side left...check my review of Joe Meeko's DVD. I was very thorough with those reviews. I really enjoyed Joe's DVD, made by Wayne Gallasch at HMV Productions. Great guy, and amazing collection.

I actually got banned by those old fogeys on Iron Age! Yup ,I got banned and try to be the most polite, upbeat guy on any forum.
I made a goofy crack towards Peter McGough ( and me included), saying that it looked like we BOTH stopped using the ab blaster we got for Christmas.
That was considered "disrespectful" towards Peter and they voted to ban me .
Ha Ha Ha
Seriously? They Banned you ::)
Bunch of upity twats.

Ron won't ban me on here for bypassing the swear filter for saying nigger, will be?
What about kike?
Edit:
Lol, kike isn't in the swear filter...but nigge r becomes black?

Do you sell them?
no as i said, i gave power grips to his mom and his sister was suppose to keep it alive. I still have the components to make them. Just offered up as a gift.

This thread brought back some fond memories of Joe that I related earlier. Still, think of him as he made a very positive impression on me and I still use his grips regularly. As you can see, mine has some long, hard miles on it but it still works. Hope to get it stitched back up like new once I find a place that would do it. They really are the best grips ever. I don't use it as much as I'd like to as the bars and handles on the newer equipment are much fatter so that the grip won't go over it. If only the current handle was made a little bit thinner so that it could expand more. I mentioned this to Joe and also asked him if I could get one in Black. That's about the time he dropped off from IronAge.

he had a lot of issues with his satellite internet. He was a phone person. At the time of the drop off he was working on an independent film.

Check out this blast from the past I tracked down...not all the pages are archived, but I read the first two pages tonight. Not sure if the rest are in the archive:
https://web.archive.org/web/20090924004531/http://www.ironage.us/yabbse/index.php/topic,10564.0.html
On page two, Joe recounts a VERY SCARY story that took place on the beach one dark California night over 30 years ago.
Read the story...but prepare to be TERRIFIED.

Terrifying beach story by Meeko posted above.
