Title: Home gyms
Post by: RJ DRIVER on July 17, 2018, 10:20:46 AM
Who’s got one?  I’ve been looking into a garage gym for days when I’m too busy and can’t make it into my real gym.  Rogue has some great equipment but I can’t get over the high price of not just the equipment but shipping.  I’m seriously leaning toward a titan x3 cage with bench. Titans free shipping is very enticing. I plan to slowly add pieces over the years.  Anyone with any experience care to share their thoughts or recommendations?

Check out Powertec, Ironmaster and even Powerblocks. I have a really nice home gym. Some of my equipment would never last in a commercial gym like my lat pulldown and leg press. It works fine for me. I don't slam anything.

I lot of great physiques were made with basic stuff. Having all the machines in a commercial gym is nice but not necessary. Through the years I have added stuff to my home gym. Below is what I have.

Squat rack
Power and Olympic bar
Table to make dumbbells to 75lbs then hex to 100lbs
Lat pulldown
leg press
leg extension and leg curl
EZ curl bars
Dip bars
standing calf
seated calf
lower back extension
heavy bag
treadmill
chinning bar with ab straps

Do you need all that? No.  I could do every necessary thing with dumbbells, bench, dip and chin bar.

I rarely see a thread about home gyms, so your implied premise is wrong.

And even if that were true, why are you so mad about it? ???

The op just missed out. If he'd started this post a week ago chances are he'd gotten Vince to donate, or at least sell at steep discount, his last Body Gym and he wouldn't need all the unnecessary auxiliary equipment.

Sad.

Pay for Rogue. Some folks have had luck with Titan, but others have had J hooks shear/peel back, power rack safety straps tear, and bench tabs shear. I'd trust them for sleds, etc...., but nothing where life and limb could be at stake.

Another option is if you've got a second hand gym supply in the area. Lots of top end equipment goes for dimes on the dollar sometimes.

Have basic setup, power rack, adjustable bench with leg ext/curl, 230kg Olympic barbell set, standard plate adjustable dumbbells with mixture of old plates and a second hand ex commercial lat pulldown/low row machine. All i ever need and probably cost less than 3 years gym membership.

Get in contact with Vince G and purchase his stock of caliber fitness equipment. That way you provide a getbigger a roof over his head and you're set up for a while. Atleast until you actually get into training anyways.

Titan had 20% sitewide during 4th of July time and always has free shipping. Wait for a nice sale on there or check out OfferUp or craig’s list for equipment that’s 25% of the original price. The only thing from Rogue that i was willing to buy is a barbell. The cost plus shipping is ridiculous although the quality if a lot better than Titan

Sometimes I think less is more. You could be in outrageous shape with adjustable dumbbells and one of those benches with a dip/chin attachment. Add some running and you have 99.999% of every thing you need for a good physique. As bodybuilding enthusiasts that take bodybuilding advice from steroid users we have been indoctrinated into thinking we need 4 different movements per body part. Nothing could be further from the truth. Here's a really hard routine that has every thing.

One arm dumbbell snatch 2 x 4
Dumbbell squat 2 x 12 (upright back sinking the butt. No deadlifting the weight)
Dumbbell lunge 2 x 8
Semi stiff leg deadlift off a platform 2 x 8
Incline dumbbell chest press 2 x 8
Max push ups 1 x
Pull ups 2 x max
One arm dumbbell row 2 x 10
Dumbbell shoulder press 2 x 10
Weighted dips 2 x 10
Dumbbell curls 2 x 8
One leg calf raise with a dumbbell 2 x 15
ab and neck exercises.

Done two to three times a week will do the trick. Run on off days. So many more variations of the above with either dumbbells or a barbell. Having all he bells and whistles equipment is fun but in truth not necessary. With something like IronMaster dumbbells, Power Blocks or Hex dumbbells off Craig's you can have everything you need to build a great body with a good bench with the size of a postage stamp work out area.

The ugly truth is that you could sink a battleship with all the unused home gym equipment in any city.

Join a gym and train there. Too many distractions at home...TV, computer, people, etc.

Most towns have gyms that open 24/7.

I have heaps of gym equipment where I am. At the moment I use only two pieces for biceps and triceps. Gyms don't have the equipment I built so I can't go there.

For those crazy people who go ahead setting up a gym look at auctions and online. Lots of free equipment as well. Buy good used equipment. Much, much cheaper than new.

I use my home gym.  Trained at home for decades. Now I split my time between a commercial gym and home. If your not motivated then going to a commercial gym won't matter. Truth be told more people talk about working out than doing it. So many people in commercial gyms are just going through the motions not pushing them selves. Whether you have a home gym or go to a commercial one the motivation comes from within.

I was told by someone who owns a Crossfit gym that he uses Titan.  He says the welds aren't as pretty as Rogue's but he'd rather save 50%.

I bought the X-3 half and a bench.  X-3 is on back order.

But Craigslist is your friend.  Bought the following there, mostly at 50% of retail:

Hex DL bar and 2 OLY bars
Cambered bar (awesome)
Ironmaster DB 10-120 (5x better than the shitty bowflex or power blocks)
4x6 mats
Full cage (replacing with X-3)
Airdyne Ad-6
2 battle ropes
50lb sand bell
Pendlay elite and rogue echo bumpers
Kettlebells
Landmine press
Eco-prowler
Body solid adjustable bench with preacher

Bought retail:
Bands for band station
40/60/80 lb GoRuck sandbags
Medicine balls
Atomic bomb climbing holds

Good to go.  Use all the time.

Last week saw a guy selling 2750 worth of a Rogue home gym for 1200.  Had a 600 dollar rack for 275.....I made an offer but he said he wanted to try to sell the whole thing.   Took him 2 days.  I should have bought it, took what I needed, and flipped the rest.

Anyway, it's all out there for deals if you're patient and stick to your price.

Damn I must’ve just missed that sale.  I’ve been looking at craigslist daily for months. Unfortunately I live in a small town (20,000). The next biggest town is over 3 hours away so the secondary market is very limited here.  I agree about the barbell from rogue.  I’m waiting for Black Friday to pick up a nice Ohio power bar.  Someone told me rogue does free shipping over Black Friday.

Mine very basic with old equipment and have little room due to currently having to share the garage with most my work tools, plan on extending garage soon and new higher pitched roof so standing overhead work will be possible again and have the luxury of more space. Would like some sort of leg press/hack squat eventually when space allows

6 THRE ARE TO MANY BACK AND LEG MOVEMENTS YOU CANNOT DO WITH HOME GYMS UNLESS YOU HAVE THE MONEY OR ROOM FOR ALL THE STUFF YOU WILL NEED

Squats, lunges, SLDL

Deadlifts, Rows, Chins

All can be done with basic kit, at home, very easily.  Muppet.

only you miss out on is knee flexion for the hamstrings.

Can't Think of any other movement- mechanics you miss out on with just having a powerrack

So get a device for hams curl if anything...

I was thinking rack, barbell, plates, and bench.  Eventually add cables and dumbells. Just enough to get the job done on the days I can’t make it to the gym.  Just to clarify, I’m a stay at home dad and my kids seem to get sick all fall/winter long, which prevents me from being able to hit the gym.  Also I’m expecting kid number 3. So the guesses that I’m a basement dweller are off.

One piece of kit that nobody has mentioned is a dual adjustable pulley.

They are the most versatile piece of equipment in any gym and add an adjustable bench and you have an excellent variation for every part of your upper body.

Convenience mainly mate, do my 2 main training sessions on a weekend when not fatigued from work and also look after the kids while the woman works so it’s easier at home, have a half decent gym a 2 minutes walk from my house and used to love going there and do miss it,love the gym atmosphere, women in tight gear and all decent equipment ect and will probably go back at some point when kids can look after themselves

Yes!! They are awesome mate.

There was a little lass who was a power lifter who’s squat sessions lasted 2 hours, she’d come in wearing jogging pants and after warming up would strip down to these little Lycra shorts, she was average in looks but her legs and ass were amazing and getting to watch her squat atg between every set was a joy to behold, the owner ruined it for everyone when put a 20 minute time limit on the rack and she was never seen again

Ha, we also have this up to 57 kg national champ cutie. Face is a 5, but her ass & legs are a straight 8. She also likes Getbig jokes, so we always have funny interactions. She grunts like a gorilla when I assist her with squats, which was pretty awkward in the beginning :D

Awesome gym oldtimer1

Powerlift66 has a phenomenal home set up also

Using mine over 40 years as well, no need for commercial if one needs to train, I happen to like both (home and a good commercial gym).
Lucky enough to have access to both as well... I downsized this recently to the other garage stall, still have most of the iron and all of the benches/racks...

(3 - York 300+ lb. sets from the 70's, 2 Ivanko 300+ lb. sets, Eleiko set (440 lbs) lots of dumbbells, racks, benches, etc.
