Home gyms

Who’s got one?  I’ve been looking into a garage gym for days when I’m too busy and can’t make it into my real gym.  Rogue has some great equipment but I can’t get over the high price of not just the equipment but shipping.  I’m seriously leaning toward a titan x3 cage with bench. Titans free shipping is very enticing. I plan to slowly add pieces over the years.  Anyone with any experience care to share their thoughts or recommendations?

Check out Powertec, Ironmaster and even Powerblocks. I have a really nice home gym. Some of my equipment would never last in a commercial gym like my lat pulldown and leg press. It works fine for me. I don't slam anything.

I lot of great physiques were made with basic stuff. Having all the machines in a commercial gym is nice but not necessary. Through the years I have added stuff to my home gym. Below is what I have.

Squat rack
Power and Olympic bar
Table to make dumbbells to 75lbs then hex to 100lbs
Lat pulldown
leg press
leg extension and leg curl
EZ curl bars
Dip bars
standing calf
seated calf
lower back extension
heavy bag
treadmill
chinning bar with ab straps

Do you need all that? No.  I could do every necessary thing with dumbbells, bench, dip and chin bar.

I rarely see a thread about home gyms, so your implied premise is wrong.

And even if that were true, why are you so mad about it? ???

The op just missed out. If he'd started this post a week ago chances are he'd gotten Vince to donate, or at least sell at steep discount, his last Body Gym and he wouldn't need all the unnecessary auxiliary equipment.

Sad.

Pay for Rogue. Some folks have had luck with Titan, but others have had J hooks shear/peel back, power rack safety straps tear, and bench tabs shear. I'd trust them for sleds, etc...., but nothing where life and limb could be at stake.

Another option is if you've got a second hand gym supply in the area. Lots of top end equipment goes for dimes on the dollar sometimes.

Have basic setup, power rack, adjustable bench with leg ext/curl, 230kg Olympic barbell set, standard plate adjustable dumbbells with mixture of old plates and a second hand ex commercial lat pulldown/low row machine. All i ever need and probably cost less than 3 years gym membership.

Get in contact with Vince G and purchase his stock of caliber fitness equipment. That way you provide a getbigger a roof over his head and you're set up for a while. Atleast until you actually get into training anyways.

Titan had 20% sitewide during 4th of July time and always has free shipping. Wait for a nice sale on there or check out OfferUp or craig’s list for equipment that’s 25% of the original price. The only thing from Rogue that i was willing to buy is a barbell. The cost plus shipping is ridiculous although the quality if a lot better than Titan

A powerrack, a bench and a barbell with enough weights is all you need really.

Shit, you beat me to it.

That's the setup I've been using for almost 40 years. No wasted time traveling, no idiots and no gym fees.

Sometimes I think less is more. You could be in outrageous shape with adjustable dumbbells and one of those benches with a dip/chin attachment. Add some running and you have 99.999% of every thing you need for a good physique. As bodybuilding enthusiasts that take bodybuilding advice from steroid users we have been indoctrinated into thinking we need 4 different movements per body part. Nothing could be further from the truth. Here's a really hard routine that has every thing.

One arm dumbbell snatch 2 x 4
Dumbbell squat 2 x 12 (upright back sinking the butt. No deadlifting the weight)
Dumbbell lunge 2 x 8
Semi stiff leg deadlift off a platform 2 x 8
Incline dumbbell chest press 2 x 8
Max push ups 1 x
Pull ups 2 x max
One arm dumbbell row 2 x 10
Dumbbell shoulder press 2 x 10
Weighted dips 2 x 10
Dumbbell curls 2 x 8
One leg calf raise with a dumbbell 2 x 15
ab and neck exercises.

Done two to three times a week will do the trick. Run on off days. So many more variations of the above with either dumbbells or a barbell. Having all he bells and whistles equipment is fun but in truth not necessary. With something like IronMaster dumbbells, Power Blocks or Hex dumbbells off Craig's you can have everything you need to build a great body with a good bench with the size of a postage stamp work out area.

Pics of my home gym. The pictures are only about half of the basement gym. When I down size I am going that minimalist approach that I talked about in my previous post.
