Title: Best tasting Asian cuisine?
Post by: galain on February 21, 2019, 04:12:13 AM
And why?

My very unpopular personal opinion is that Japanese cooking, for the talk of subtlety, isn't all that great. I love a good bowl of ramen but apart from that...I find there's a lot more interesting stuff in other asian countries (including india).

Heard that the Okinawan diet is good for longevity, if you want to be 100+ years old.

Can you manage Fish and Seaweed for years lol

Fuck that. It's probably all the fermented stuff and the low calorie intake that helps them.

No - I mean taste!

No expert here but I'm going with Thai.  When I order that chicken coconut green curry with jasmine rice I order two chicken coconut green curries with two jasmine rices.

Then the waitress tries to leave but I'm like No, wait, also whatever my gf is ordering.

Chinese.  There's a reason why there are Chinese restaurants in every tiny town or city in America.  If Indian or Thai food were better we would have them everywhere.  Thai food tastes like dog food.  Indian is worse.

The reason for  Chinese restaurants in every tiny town or city in America is that there is an endless supply of Chinese willing to work shitty jobs in shitty Chinese restaurants.

If there were enough Indians and Thais around you'd get the same outcome

I've actually been in Thai restaurants where the owners and staff were Chinese.  I guess there was too much competition with other Chinese restaurants in town so they went Thai to be unique.

Chinese restaurants have numerous good meals and because they are located everywhere a person knows what they like wherever they are located.  I like some Japanese food but I don't care for fish which eliminates most of their dishes.  I think Thai and Indian food tastes like shit.  I've only had Korean food once and didn't like it but it might have just been that one meal.

I'd say it social as much as dietary. The elderly are in general much better taken care of there, family stick around and they feel valued.

Most elderly elsewhere are depressed and lonely as fuck.

A diet of fish, rice, sprouts and bamboo shoots plus a low stress agricultural life for the Okinawans who I think you are talking about.  The mainland Japanese have a lot of stress with long work hours in busy urban, stressful environments with a more western diet and don't live as long.

Same for majority of Asian countries as well but they don’t have the same life expectancy

Dietary is the main factor, then social and the way of life over there

Most Indian restaurants are ran by Bangladeshis as most Indians don't want to work in those jobs. Maybe it's the same with Thais

I was there from 84-89 and to this day, Okinawan food is my favorite, just hard to find anything close in the places I've lived in the states.  Even went to a restaurant called "Okinawa" really expecting it to be good and it was mainland Japanese food.

Are you serious? Why the hell would mangosteen be banned. Number one, it's the best tasting fruit on the planet. Number two, the rind of the skin (when it's prepared properly) can be tremendously good for your health. If I were to only have one fruit to eat it would be mangosteen.

True. I think has a lot to do with the fact that many people still sit on the floor there as well as on furniture. When I was there it was always surprising to see older people get up from a cross legged position on the ground without having to base with their hands. They just stood up directly. First time I saw that I thought 'my mother couldn't do this, let alone my grandmother...'

Filipino or Thai. They have certain eastern elements, western elements, and have extremely large variety of food. Deserts are good too.

Japanese and Korean are more novelty cuisines that are fun or interesting to eat. I love Sushi and Korean fermented foods but the variety is lacking.

For health Vietnamese and Japanesare great though.
this is the best the Philippines has to offer

I like Pad Thai. Thats about it from that country. I was married to an Okinawan and love Okinawan food the best. But I was also married to a Vietnamese and there are many dishes they have that I love. The bottom line is there is no one asian culinary food I like, and probaby the same for most people. Sometimes I crave spring rolls and bun thit nun, other times it's sushi. Then I want some pad thai, or tonkutsu or Udon. just depends on the mood.

Japanese easily. I'll never forget eating Kobe beef in Kobe, Japan. They showed me the family tree of the animal I was eating, they take that shit seriously over there LOL. Thai food is not bad, but more comfort food. Same with Vietnamese. But ingredients are never top notch.

For ultimate quality and taste - Japanese but it's going to cost some. Quality is not cheap.
