You're not kidding. Supplement companies preyed on the ignorance of amateur bodybuilders + hobbyists. Professionals always knew that only steroids truly worked for any appreciable gain in muscle mass. The rest of those powders facilitated water retention and gave you the runs.

Hell, the most impressive things about most of the supplements back then were the labels they would plop on the bottles.

Some good stuff did come out of it w/ Duchaine though, Ultimate Orange, Ephedrine, and th en a handful of PH's that worked (Epi, etc).

some livers were damaged with M1T also, more potent oral than D-Bol sold in Supp Shops back in the day. (1Fast400, etc).

Hot Stuff
Cybergenics
Mega Mass 2000
Franco Santoriello built his whole physique on Cybergenics. ;D  At least Hot Stuff tasted really good.  Mega Mass 2000 really did make me gain a little weight because I was so constipated from drinking that cement like shake I couldn't shit for a week.

Hot Stuff
Cybergenics
Mega Mass 2000

Original Hot Stuff was awesome.  It worked.  The next versions sucked ass.

Mega Mass 2000 worked too.  It did put on weight.  Fat, still you weighed more.   Hell of a lot of carbs in it.

MetRx - when it was so strong it had to come in two containers.  The mix and the "base".  So strong they couldn't ship it in one container.

In my younger days as an enthusiast I certainly wasted a heck of a lot of dough on fart powders and (usually monstrous) pills.

What a racket.

I'm sure the marketers and "scientists" in the lab coats in ads got a good laugh at us spending all of our hard earned money from our high school jobs on their shit powders thinking we would get jacked.

I didn't get clipped too bad because the first guys I really paid attention to were Duchaine and Poliquin, who were decent about not suckering you back then. I did fall for the first generation andro products for a couple of months during the big home run faceoff of '98, chromium picolinate, and one bottle of Vanadyl Sulfate. And I remember really wanting to try HMB, but it was hugely expensive for my teenage wallet at around $60 a bottle, and when I finally had the money, the hype had died off.

The one that I really hated though was EAS's Phosphagain. It was their 1st generation meal replacement with creatine, and I bought it because it seem like a good deal compared to Phosphagen HP and regular Phospagen, which were just creatine or creatine and carbs. Absolutely horrid stuff, it only came in a really salty vanilla flavor, and came out of a tin can and had a consistency that could be mistaken for instant potato flakes. If I didn't pay $65 (1997 prices, on sale), I would have tossed it the 3rd shake in.

What was the Orange pre-workout everyone swore by?
Title: Re: Before we wised up

What was the Orange pre-workout everyone swore by?

Duchaine's Ultimate Orange by Designer Protein.

Edit, here's the formula -

Ultimate Orange -

Carbohydrates - 16g
Protein - 25g
MaHuang shooting for a standardization of 8% - 415mg (about 33mg of Ephedrine)
Caffeine was around 300mg in the form of Gurana.

Also while the ephedrine and caffeine numbers seem in line with products of the day, it also had dosing guidelines that put your average to large sized bodybuilder around 2 - 2 1/2 that per serving.

The first time I used it I broke my pr on bench.  I also did like twice as many sets in that workout and didn't want to quit.  Felt a little psycho as well. :D

I would pop an ephedrine tabs, and drink a serving of UO. Talk about getting geeked up for a workout.
Nowadays, I hate stims...

The original 1AD from ergopharm worked really well. I remember when Muscletech took off. They would put the ads with the guys wearing lab coats in the magazines. The supplement companies were not evaluated by the FDA, so they could pretty much make any statement they wanted on the label as long as they included "may." For example, this "may" cause explosive gains.

Got a free copy of bill phillips sports supplement review when was 15 and read the whole thing which was for most part just a long winded promotion for his supplements (although the sections on the “abc” diet and German volume training were the first piece of literature on training and eating properly and were a massive help) and like an idiot I fell for it all got the bus to Newcastle and paid 40 quid or so with money I saved up for a bottle of Phospagen all the while thinking I can’t wait to leave school and start work to be able to afford all the shite recommended in the book. The creatine did fuck all for me except cause the shits, that was enough to say fuck it

Supplement companies stay in business because the new crop of teenagers and young adults wanting to get big keep coming. When a guy hits about 25 or so he comes to the realization that he has been had. None of contributed one ounce of muscle.  Then when he stops buying the newest and latest con supplement a 18 year old is just beginning his supplement purchases.

I'm down to a cheap multi vitamin that I barely believe contributes to health and a protein shake after a work out. I have trouble believing the 30 gram protein shake helps at all but I have been brain washed into thinking I need it.

Needless to say you can use absolutely nothing and look amazing using anabolic steroids. Seen so many zeros go to heroes in 6 weeks to know the power of the drugs. Then again I have seen the reverse too.

I truly think the late 80s and 90s  was a suckers paradise for sup companies
Vanadyl Sulphate
19 nor, andro
Phosphatidylserine

Orchic testosterone extract

I used the 19-nor 3 andro for a cycle.

I actually think it worked, to an extent.

Supposed to convert to nandrolone, albeit a small dose.

yea back in the day I do believe certain sups had small doses of gear mixed in remember it wasn't regulated to much in the 80s and 90s unless some one died or got sick then the FDA might have had their stuff analyzed

Yeah, it was called a grey area supplement, with an altered molecule or two that the body converted to something else.

Ordered it again a couple years later, felt sick, and flushed it.

It was red and came in bottles.  It was no-name.

Tasted like vomit.

One taste and I had to throw it out.

Anybody else ever try it?
