Title: Another physique competitor dead
Post by: beakdoctor on October 02, 2019, 08:47:30 AM
Just saw a physique competitor from Iran just died after competing in a contest.  Last week an Italian physique competitor died after a contest.

What's going on? If you had to guess what's the likely cause? Both were young and in apparently good shape. What did they use that caused death?

No expert but maybe diuretics? The late Momo comes to mind (saw him win one of his last contest here in Italy. Salsomaggiore).

This. When you throw off your electorate balance, usually potassium, it's bad news for your heart.

"The cause of death has yet to be determined officially for Shahab Beyranvand. Initial reports suggest the young man committed suicide with pills. Although some are saying it could be a result of heart failure. Nevertheless, Mohammad Reza Piradi, the mentor of this young bodybuilder, is urging people to avoid spreading rumors until an autopsy has been performed."

I'd consider competing in bb contests and suicide being one on the same

It's sometimes curious how things are worded. Reza Piradi seems to say it will be okay to spread rumors about Shahab once the autopsy is performed.

Whatever the cause of Shahab's demise, it is a shame when someone so young passes.

Mineral imbalance isn’t good.
Very high potassium levels can cause cardiac arrest - Death.
From sodium depletion / Diuretics- Potassium sparring / High potassium intake,
All of these are common for competitive Bodybuilders to Do.

The heart's electrical activity depends on there being a gradient between the potassium inside the heart's muscle cells and the blood.  If the level of potassium in the blood is too low, the heart becomes too excitable and will develop a dangerous arrythmia, ie: one that doesn't pump blood through the body.  If the level of potassium is too high, the heart is unable to beat, hence the use of high dose potassium in lethal injections.

Potassium wasting diuretics (eg: lasix) combined with an unbalanced pre-contest diet can easily result in dangerously low levels of potassium.

Bingo. Mentzer used to bring potassium tablets with him to a show and once probably saved a life of a bodybuilder who was showing symptoms. Lasix and dehydration is asking for trouble.

The Shawn Ray talked about prep, and Dorian, they talked about slowly dieting in to the last week and then dehydrating themselves for the show. No diuretics or fat burner drugs. I dont know if Shawn will see this post and comment or not.

Dorian used to drink up until the evening before the show and then drink some wine
