Title: What would be the worst state/region in your country for you to live in? Why?
Post by: galain on November 17, 2019, 03:44:22 AM
I was just reading about Arkansas - no offense to anyone from there but it seemed a little bleak.....

As an Aussie, my personal pet hate back home is the nation's capital - Canberra. Overplanned, dull and full of public servants. I know lots of people love the place. I've been a few times and was always happy to leave.

Any predominantly black inner-city. The state or region really doesn’t matter.

If you have money any state can be good because you can live in the nice areas.

In the USA the deep south states are the poorest (Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana), but wealthy people do live there.

Fayetteville, Arkansas was the #4 best place to live in a U.S. News and World Report study. https://realestate.usnews.com/places/arkansas/fayetteville

I know a wealthy attorney from NY who has vacationed in Alabama for many years and loves it.  He has a second home there.

The advantage of these poor states is the cost of living is generally low so you can live very well if you have money.

Spent two nights in Boston a few years back. Found people either very loud but nice, or very hipster and completely arrogant holier than thou scum.

But the traffic. Even in South East Asia they drive better than they do in Boston. And fuck the Boston parking people - I got two tickets within 5 minutes of each other while I was off looking for change.

Malmö is pretty crap in general here in Sweden.

Areas around Gothenburg has turned to shit as well as the areas surrounding the innercity of Stockholm (where i live).

Not even Östersund (which was decent in the 80s) is safe from the influx of MENA.

Those are cities, if you ask region, then i'd have to say Southwestern Skåne.

Exactly correct. If you need high end food service in your life 24/7 or have to do big city work you might hate rural living - but a big property, small govt and friendly people are a big up.

Plus you can always drive an hour to that hip Thai-talian gastrobpub and the Tiffany store.  ;D

At this point, Asians would fall in with middle-class whites. If you live near a bunch of educated Asians it’s probably a pretty good area.

Starving artists are a tiny minority and basically irrelevant. Their poverty is for the most part self-inflicted because of a poor career choice.

Anywhere I the Midwest. The small-minded people who still call anybody not born in the US (or anyone who's parents weren't born in the US) "foreigners", and who still call Asian people "orientals" (rugs and vases are "Oriental". People are "Asian").

They're always somehow broke and live like they're poor, driving 10yr old rusted, dirty American cars, despite the cost of living is dirt cheap and homes are less than $100k. ($100k home in many Midwest "towns" would cost $700k+ in CA).

The women all cut their hair short, and look/talk/sound/act like that khunt "Kate" from that "Jon & Kate plus 8" TV show.

Aside from a handful of cities In the Midwest (anywhere), there's absolutely nothing to do, and your only exposure to the real, outside world, is through TV.

Anyone with any sense leaves at the first opportunity. The dumb ones stay. Hardly anyone leaves the state, much less the country, and if they do it's to the one or two closest neighboring states.

Absolute shitholes In the middle of the country from North of Texas all the way to Canada... And the few towns with any "large" populations, the "minorities" in those  towns/cities are there running drugs/coke/meth/weed from shithole city to shithole city, impregnating as many mudsharks as they can.

Any rural area is like that.

Good paying jobs are scarce in these places.  The real estate is cheap because demand is low

The people get paid very low wages.

If you move there with money you can live cheaply but it's very difficult to make money there.

Rich people do live in these places and run things.  Usually a successful family business or corporate execs whose company located there to take advantage of tax breaks and cheap labor force.

The locals are like serfs to the rulers of the town.

I used to live in a place like that and some of the locals had never been more than 10 miles from where they were born.

Solid family values even though relatively poor unlike inner city people who are usually hopeless.

This is very true although because of the internet there is no excuse for someone not making money regardless of the area of the country they live.

You can use that logic even pre-internet.

There are always outliers who make lots of money no matter where they are.

The general population is not going to make it big.

They end up working at Family Dollar or laboring for the local king or being farmers.  Subsistence living.

The "good" jobs in these places are scarce.

Working for the school district or town government in some capacity are very good, stable jobs in these places.

True, but this is the same no matter where a person lives.  I have lived in 11 states and there really isn't much difference in lifestyles in any of those places including California.  Even though people may make more money in California or New York it's all relative to cost of living.  As stated in a previous post people in the midwest may live in a $100,000 house that would cost $700,000 in California.  So who's the uneducated dumbass, the person paying $700,000 for a house that they could get for $100,000 or the other guy?  If the guy in the midwest only makes $30,000 that would mean the California guy would have to make $210,000 to equal him and there aren't many people anywhere making that much.

There are people who never travel far but that is everywhere as well.  There are people who never leave New York City or Los Angeles.  A rural person has to travel more miles on a daily basis just to go shopping or see friends than a person in a large city.  Most people have a very small inner circle of friends and family and don't associate with many new or different people at all and this is everywhere as well.  People in Compton aren't going out of their way to befriend Korean business owners.

When I lived in L.A. and Vegas my biggest annoyance was traffic.  Driving an hour to go 10 miles, no thanks.

It's more fun to imagine the best places to live. Having said that, anywhere there is abject poverty and hopelessness would not be a place where I'd want to take up residence.

My wife, son and I briefly moved to Williams Lake B.C. in the early 70's. Once our savings was depleted, we were flat out broke because our friends who lived there forgot to mention that there were no jobs in the winter and the job I secured ahead of time, fell through. Our car was repossessed, not because we'd missed payments, but because the lender had a clause which said we couldn't take it out of the country. After living with our friends in their 3 room shack on Dog Creek Rd, which didn't have running water, we rented a small cabin. It had a space heater in an inside corner of the living room which we had going at full steam. Even so, the perimeter walls of the place had ice on the inside. On the plus side, it had a bathroom and a kitchen sink with hot and cold water.

After 9 months, we admitted defeat and moved back to Portland, OR. with some financial help from my aunt. As a send off while driving through the Fraser Canyon, the northern light show was on display. We never moved out of the Portland Metro area after that. We'd learned our lesson.

-lots of industrial and railway set ups - which is just adding the depressing vibes
-you better speak spanish and carry a gun

Sounds like throwback vibes to another more primitive time. I can imagine what you are saying and am taking El Paso off my 'must visit' list! Done various places in America and lived in Orlando briefly but Arizona is somewhere I can't wait to see. I know you live there and you have made it sound like a great holiday location.

El Paso is a nasty place

and Buffalo, NY is just depressing.  I think I would choose buffalo over El Paso.

Buffalo felt like the closest thing to a soviet city in the US....
:D  Because of the cold or shitty architecture?

Yes, definitely Buffalo over El Paso.

If you got bored in Buffalo it's just a short drive to Cleveland or Rochester.

honestly a little of everything.

-the circle/squares
-ugly co-op looking apartment buildings
-run down factory mills
-cold/shity weather
-beat down/defeated mental mindset of the daily citizen
-holding onto sports teams (sabres and bills)

I do not want to talk "shit" about where someone calls home - but Buffalo would be the close as possible to a USSR/CCCP city possible

If I had to choose the following: I would take Buffalo over El Paso

I would just find ways to enjoy winter months (Snowmobiles, cross country ski, ice fish) and I would take 2 trips down to Miami or Puerto rico in the winter.

living desert in cities is good when its a resort area (Palm Springs, LV, Scottsdale) but desert cities generally suck - El Paso, tucson, all of new mexico.  - just hot AF, run down and very western feeling.

America is great, you can just pick up and move if you arent happy! I could say fuck you Scottsdale today and just move to Denver if I wished.  I am originally from Chicago, IL (glad I grew up there, but glad I am not living there now)

I grew up in a rust belt town and glad I was able to get out

I prefer the west as well.  Moved back to the midwest just because of family as I don't feel like flying back every year at Christmas.  Will someday move back to Vegas, Reno, Flagstaff or somewhere else in AZ/NV.

It can be disheartening to visit the places where we lived as children. From the age of 8 until adulthood, I lived with my mom and step father in greater Los Angeles. We lived in nice neighborhoods; Beverly Hills, West Los Angeles (near Century City) and Encino. I haven't been back in decades. One of the last times my wife and I visited we drove around looking at our childhood homes. They were well kept and in the case of my wife's home in North Beverly Hills, it grew a whole new wing which amused us since it was a very large house to begin with, including having servants' quarters over the garage.

We also visited some of our old haunts. But, several were gone, replaced by high-rise buildings. This was specially true of many of our favorite restaurants on Sunset Strip. This was the fun part of our visit. We were also acutely aware of how much more crowded L.A. had become. The freeways and main roads were often in gridlock. It sometimes took hours to get to places that took only minutes to travel to when we were kids.

Of course Portland has changed dramatically in the last 50 years too. When we moved here everything was closed on Sundays. We had a house on S.E. 76th which put it 76 blocks and a 15 minute bus ride from downtown. My co-workers wondered why we were living in the boonies. During the last 20 years that I've lived in West Linn, it has gone from a quiet little suburban town to a small city with almost no vacant land left.

Nothing stays the same. Change is inevitable.

You were under the wrong impression. When push comes to shove, it is everyone for themself.

But you're right. Hilary should help me. Afterall, I helped her run her unsuccessful campaign with my hard earned money.

Naive people support socialism, U just admitted  ;D ;D ;D

based on A&E's 48 hours, Louisville of Kentucky, Memphis of Tennessee, Cleveland of Ohio, Tulsa of Oklahoma, probably the worst cities with full crimes to live in

Not the worst. In fact ranks as the 8th best city to live in, in the U.S.

8. Portland, Oregon

Portland isn't for everybody — its slogan is "Keep Portland Weird," after all. But one local expert asserts that it's a "well-rounded city with more than just the offbeat shops and events" and a population that has "more academic degrees than the national average."

Major employer Intel Corporation calls Portland home, as well as the headquarters for Nike, located about seven miles outside of Portland.

Population: 2,382,037

Average annual salary: $55,330

Quality of life: 6.7

Value index: 6.0

Right now I'm sitting in a 650k 600ft apartment and have everything you could possibly dream of within walking distance. However I am annoyed as fuck living here. Busy road on one side and train line on the other and just disgusting people everywhere you go.

I would happily move somewhere boring and depressing if I had a huge house (game room, home cinema, home gym etc). I just can't find anyone to make that kinda move with me!
