Gauteng, Johannesburg.

A crime-ridden shithole with the highest amount of car hijackings, robbery, murder, rape etc.

The infrastructure is also crumbling.

The local bureaucracy is also shockingly inefficient and incapable.

Asians?  White, very educated, starving artists?

At this point, Asians would fall in with middle-class whites. If you live near a bunch of educated Asians it’s probably a pretty good area.

Starving artists are a tiny minority and basically irrelevant. Their poverty is for the most part self-inflicted because of a poor career choice.

Are you implying that a degree in Art History is a poor choice?

No, I’m stating it out right.😁

I’ll also add that if you live in an area with a lot of chicks named Megan and Kaitlyn it’s probably a pretty good location.

French film about Paul Gauguin ' Voyage to Tahiti' (2017) is the best example , try Youtube !.
Vincent Casel as P.G. was fantastic.

Malmö is pretty crap in general here in Sweden.

Areas around Gothenburg has turned to shit as well as the areas surrounding the innercity of Stockholm (where i live).

Not even Östersund (which was decent in the 80s) is safe from the influx of MENA.

Those are cities, if you ask region, then i'd have to say Southwestern Skåne.

Anywhere I the Midwest. The small-minded people who still call anybody not born in the US (or anyone who's parents weren't born in the US) "foreigners", and who still call Asian people "orientals" (rugs and vases are "Oriental". People are "Asian").

They're always somehow broke and live like they're poor, driving 10yr old rusted, dirty American cars, despite the cost of living is dirt cheap and homes are less than $100k. ($100k home in many Midwest "towns" would cost $700k+ in CA).

The women all cut their hair short, and look/talk/sound/act like that khunt "Kate" from that "Jon & Kate plus 8" TV show.

Aside from a handful of cities In the Midwest (anywhere), there's absolutely nothing to do, and your only exposure to the real, outside world, is through TV.

Anyone with any sense leaves at the first opportunity. The dumb ones stay. Hardly anyone leaves the state, much less the country, and if they do it's to the one or two closest neighboring states.

Absolute shitholes In the middle of the country from North of Texas all the way to Canada... And the few towns with any "large" populations, the "minorities" in those  towns/cities are there running drugs/coke/meth/weed from shithole city to shithole city, impregnating as many mudsharks as they can.

If I look around and can't pick one because they all look ok does that mean I'm living in it?

Any rural area is like that.

Good paying jobs are scarce in these places.  The real estate is cheap because demand is low

The people get paid very low wages.

If you move there with money you can live cheaply but it's very difficult to make money there.

Rich people do live in these places and run things.  Usually a successful family business or corporate execs whose company located there to take advantage of tax breaks and cheap labor force.

The locals are like serfs to the rulers of the town.

I used to live in a place like that and some of the locals had never been more than 10 miles from where they were born.

Solid family values even though relatively poor unlike inner city people who are usually hopeless.

This is very true although because of the internet there is no excuse for someone not making money regardless of the area of the country they live.

You can use that logic even pre-internet.

There are always outliers who make lots of money no matter where they are.

The general population is not going to make it big.

They end up working at Family Dollar or laboring for the local king or being farmers.  Subsistence living.

The "good" jobs in these places are scarce.

Working for the school district or town government in some capacity are very good, stable jobs in these places.

True, but this is the same no matter where a person lives.  I have lived in 11 states and there really isn't much difference in lifestyles in any of those places including California.  Even though people may make more money in California or New York it's all relative to cost of living.  As stated in a previous post people in the midwest may live in a $100,000 house that would cost $700,000 in California.  So who's the uneducated dumbass, the person paying $700,000 for a house that they could get for $100,000 or the other guy?  If the guy in the midwest only makes $30,000 that would mean the California guy would have to make $210,000 to equal him and there aren't many people anywhere making that much.

There are people who never travel far but that is everywhere as well.  There are people who never leave New York City or Los Angeles.  A rural person has to travel more miles on a daily basis just to go shopping or see friends than a person in a large city.  Most people have a very small inner circle of friends and family and don't associate with many new or different people at all and this is everywhere as well.  People in Compton aren't going out of their way to befriend Korean business owners.

When I lived in L.A. and Vegas my biggest annoyance was traffic.  Driving an hour to go 10 miles, no thanks.

You've made some good points.

No matter where you live it sucks to be poor and live in a high crime area.

I was born at St. bernardines. Worked in the city for 15 + years. Entire place should be set on fire and left to return to its pre-historic state. Far worse than LA, Compton, Fresno. Oaklands still shittier tho.  .

It's more fun to imagine the best places to live. Having said that, anywhere there is abject poverty and hopelessness would not be a place where I'd want to take up residence.

My wife, son and I briefly moved to Williams Lake B.C. in the early 70's. Once our savings was depleted, we were flat out broke because our friends who lived there forgot to mention that there were no jobs in the winter and the job I secured ahead of time, fell through. Our car was repossessed, not because we'd missed payments, but because the lender had a clause which said we couldn't take it out of the country. After living with our friends in their 3 room shack on Dog Creek Rd, which didn't have running water, we rented a small cabin. It had a space heater in an inside corner of the living room which we had going at full steam. Even so, the perimeter walls of the place had ice on the inside. On the plus side, it had a bathroom and a kitchen sink with hot and cold water.

After 9 months, we admitted defeat and moved back to Portland, OR. with some financial help from my aunt. As a send off while driving through the Fraser Canyon, the northern light show was on display. We never moved out of the Portland Metro area after that. We'd learned our lesson.

There was no misery and no pain. It was just an experience which taught us a lesson. Which was, being broke sucks.
