mentzer was underrated...the only weak spot he had were his pecs which were flat from the sides...but his overall structure and balance and development was amazing. i don't think he beat Arnold at the 1980 Olympia, but he definitely should have been mr.olympia a couple times...great quad thickness, great arms, good back with lots of definition and one of the most perfect bone structures ever. only his side chest was weak...
-
I don't rate mentzer at all....
He couldn't even compare to a b list classic competitor today

This is what a real bodybuilder looks like in clothing. There is a pciture of Zane holding a pumpkin and its another great example of what men shouild look like. Fantastic..

His back was probably his weakest part. Virtually no mid-back development or any of the many deeply etched muscles that make up the back. It was just pretty smooth back there.

what you talking about, bro...his back was amazing. he was the only guy that actually rivaled Arnie for back development in the 1980 O...his only real weakness was his lack of pec development, which came from his obsession with doing supersets with pec deck flies and pullovers. that shit can's build pec thickness. you build pec thickness with dumbbell presses, incline presses and dips...
Love,
Pedro

Well, bbing is pretty subjective. I never thought Mike had a weak chest. It wasn't his strong suit but it wasn't weak. He was so thick in the arms and shoulders that it overshadowed his pecs. That why today's guys don't have the look that Arnold, Lou, and Serge had. Modern bbers are bigger everywhere today but they don't have the look in the their chest that those guys had because of the thicker arms and shoulders. And exercises isn't going to change your natural genetic propensity. Mentzer had a thick dense chest just not that full balloon-type pecs Arnold had and no amount of presses would have changed that. The main difference between a bench press and the pec deck is that with the bench you are assisted with your triceps and shoulders with the pecs having only a partial range of motion, and with the pec deck the resistance is more directly targeted towards the press throughout a full range of motion. I don't see how adding assistance with the triceps and shoulders through a partial range of motion like the bench will result in thicker pecs. And, BTW, Mentzer super-setted flies with a pressing movement like inclines not with pullovers. I don't think he ever did pullovers as a chest movement.
Look at Mike's back. Very smooth and very shallow trap development with no midback.

I also think Mike had weak back detail and thickness.
I interviewed Mr. Universe Ahmet Enunlu, he took third place just behind Mike.
He said he was “muscularly obese” his midsection muscular but hanging, lack of pectoral thickness and absolutely underwhelming back detail.
He definitely had a wide back but lacked 3d thickness and detail.
He also seems to have a compact frame, he looks fantastic on his own but even with his amazing delts he doesn’t seem extra wide next to ordinary people.
I suspect his hips were very narrow and gave him illusion of a larger frame.

Mike had a very dense compact physique that was probably more impressive in person like Yates' was. He wasn't especially wide but he wasn't narrow either. Standing next to Zane he makes Zane look weak and skinny. And do you think his pecs look weak next to Zane and Dickerson?
Remember, you have to rate him in comparison with the top guys of the day like Boyer Cole, Zane, Robby Robinson, Padilla, Dickerson. I think he holds up quite well with those guys.

Good comparison picture, I think Zane had broad shoulders, his perfect frame helped him through his career, so Mike also seems have broad shoulders actually.
Mike’s square chest wasn’t “weak” but it just didn’t match his overall thickness, imo.

That was part of the problem. Mike looked better in clothes than up on stage being compared to other bodybuilders. He did have a great "walk around town" physique.
-
He was overrated and fans of high intensity put him up on a pedestal. When he tried to win the Universe he was rightly beaten by Robby and the next time by Kalman. His fans won't accept those defeats. His fifth place finish is about where he belonged in the 1980 Olympia. Having said all this he was a great bodybuilder and a big influence in my training. Back in the day I use to save everything I could find on his training. Stuff written by him and about him. I might have the most comprehensive collection on his training of anyone out there.
-
very well stated "oldtimer". I have always said mike was a decent bodybuilder . He just wasnt as "great" as he thought he was and he was very "full" of himself. It would of been great to see what would of happened to him if he didnt let his defeat drive him further into mental problems. I think he was partially heading in the right direction as far as recuperation but he was wrong in many ways.

Meth, booze, no sleep and 800 calorie diets certainly didn't help his mental state.

I think people are blinded with hate for Chris because he is gay. He is clearly the best physique in that picture not by a little but by a country mile.

You're constantly attributing a person's preferences to ulterior motives. HIT fans are blind to Mentzer's flaws and will never accept his defeat to Robinson and Kalman. Diskerson's physique isn't liked because he's gay. Do you really think you can read a person's mind and motives? I'm a Mike fan but felt Robby Robinson was the best bber in that era. Mike had a unique look that you either liked or didn't like. I liked it. Nothing to do with how he trained. I never liked Dickerson's physique. The droopy pecs, tiny biceps, narrow shoulders but standing relax his back was tremendous as was his calves. Bob Paris is one of the most popular bber on this site and he was gay.
Maybe people don't like or does like someone's physique because they simply don't like or do like their physique. Simple as that. No need to attribute motives that you have no way of knowing.
As the saying goes, "Sometimes a banana is just a banana."
BTW, I doubt very much that most here would agree with you that Chris looks the best in that shot let alone by a country mile. Maybe I'll make a poll to prove it.

It's subjective but I see it clearly. Didn't he come in second place in the Olympia twice and won once? Listening to guys like you people would think he was a second rate guy in bodybuilding. Look at all the Grand Prix's he won in the 80's beating a who's who in bodybuilding. The guy competed from 1966 to to 1994. An amazing time to compete near the top. In the late 70's and early 80's he was ripped and had density that made others looked soft standing by him. I stand by what I said that the average bodybuilding fan was biased toward him. Even Mentzer said he wouldn't have had a problem with Dickerson winning the 1980 Olympia.

Wait there was a bias against him yet he placed second and then won the Mr. Olympia?
I've never heard the term "muscle density" used in describing Dickerson. My point is that I didn't like his physique because I didn't like his physique and it had nothing to do with his sexual preference. Just like I got interested in Mentzer after seeing his physique and knowing nothing about his training philosophy. You attribute motives to others that you simply can't possibly know.
The general public routinely disagrees with the judges. They are the final word in a contest but not the final word in public opinion. Few people believe that Franco should have won in 1981. Few people thought that Gunter shouldn't have placed higher in the 2002 Olympia and the audience booed when he was announced for 5th place. Many thought Nasser was better than a fading Dorian.
People question judges all the time and often they are right. Politics play a huge role in picking a winner.
I made a poll asking to rate Mentzer, Zane, and Dickerson just going by that pic. I'd be surprised if Dickerson is considered the best.
-
Mentzer never competed on WABBA World Cup & NABBA Pro Mr.Universe like other Ifbb 'rebels' !.

No me, I'm pro gay. No homo. Chris has good legs but his upper body is funky/fucked in my opinion. Plus, he's a coloured guy and doesn't seem to have much in the way of a hog. Not Mr. O worthy. Now, if he had VVV's magnificent kielbasa, he'd be in business.

Why is the lighting so uneven among them in this picture?

Also, look at how lacking his triceps are from the back and compared to Dickerson and Zane, neither of them known for their arms. They appear almost nonexistent in this shot.

I took this revealing photo at the prejudging of the 1980 Mr Olympia in Sydney. This was the first call out. In those days they randomly picked a choice from the judges about who they wanted to be compared.
Mike smirked because he figured he was going to beat Arnold. Arnold hung his head as if to say, "Why did I enter!"
Things changed when Arnold was called out to be compared. He was confident now and played the audience, judges and everyone else who was there.

Vince, what did you think of Roger Walker at that contest? From all the pics I've seen I think he got screwed more than anyone at the 80 Olympia.
