Title: Vince Taylor vs Kevin Levrone - how to build muscles debate
Post by: Pet shop boys on May 22, 2020, 06:39:52 AM
TRAINING STYLE FOR BUILDING MUSCLE? Is there such thing ?

&t=1824s[/youtube]

It goes to show you that They can build muscles with light training or heavy training ….no one builds muscle based on a" juicing protocol " so why bother mentioning ? .  Steroids are both waste of time and money Great info .

WoooSHHHHHHH  LEVRONEEEEEEEEE

Yep.  When I was younger I looked at Vince Taylor with scorn because he wasn't "hardcore" like Dorian or Ronnie but now admire him for his training style and have since ditched the heavy stuff.

I like Vince.  I see him around South FL quite often (but not in a while though).  He is very approachable and sincere.  He does not mind talking with people and is very honest.  His PowerGrips are a great training aid if you want variety, but do NOT do the bicep cable curl thing where you twist your wrist during the movement....  you will get carpal tunnel syndrome or tendonitis very fast.

Levrone has always been a favorite of mine... when he is on, he is unbeatable.

True story
Fred Chadwick Snr (father of a friend of mine) went to a show with a guy from his gym who he helped get ready for the show, once backstage they had a shortage of over 40s competitors and asked Fred if he wanted to enter, he had no trunks, no tan and hadn't even dieted

He borrowed some trunks and went onstage and won the show

That as back in the day when dieting fora show as about two weeks of cutting out gravy on pie and chips, guys were always in shape , bodybuilders looked like bodybuilders year round, not just 4 weeks of the year.

I use to see Chris pretty regularly at Gold's in the early 1990s when he trained with Flex and one other guy. I don't remember him being especially strong and seem to use the same weights that Flex used. Certainly not the kind of weights Kevin used in his vids.

Cormier’s strength claim-to-fame was the incline barbell press. Full stop.

And these were literal half-reps.

Never heard of him doing anything else of note. FLEX had that pictorial of him squatting 675, and in the pics, the reps were, again, half reps. And the body mechanics looked, uh, “unpolished”.

Just another great responder without much of a clue about weight training. And no natural base, either.

As a presser, Levrone owns him.

All about effective reps and maximal fiber recruitment. Be it through heavy loads with less volume or much ligher loads, with far more volume to compensate.

Jay cranked out some an easy 12 reps with 405 on the incline. He even paused a bit at the bottom on the later reps. He could have easily do another three more.

That’s odd, when jay was in his prime in his training vids, weighing 300+ juiced to the gills, he was struggling big time with that weight, prob did a few reps before Kerry spotted him

In this vid, he’s not nearly the size he was in 2003/2004, and he’s doing it with ease. Something doesn’t add up......

None of those reps count though because he didn't go all the way down!, I remember seeing a video with I think it was Seth Feroce, or maybe I'm confusing him with Flex Lewis I'm not sure, but the dude, I think it was Seth, was doing 365 lbs on the incline for reps, just like Jay, not going all the way down, it doesn't count! it's always these dudes who don't go all the way down who lack chest development, Arnold and many others who had massive chest development always went all the way down

How many times do I need to say this.

Most pros and top amateurs are BY FAR at their strongest in the weeks leading to a contest. They’re absolutely drowning in steroids and other assorted anabolic chemicals.

I’ve had quite a few tell me, off the record, how they are insanely strong right before a show.

They don't go all the way down and touch their chest for the same reason they don't fully lockout. Continuous tension, TUT, Time Under Tension. It's actually harder that way as your muscles are always under tension. When you touch your chest there is a slight pause/rest as well as the bit of the bounce you get coming off your chest. Jay actually pauses a bit on the bottom position, still supporting the whole weight, for a couple of reps which takes all momentum out of the movement. Just pure muscular contraction. It's not reps per se that causes inroads into the muscles but the actual time under tension. Those reps are about as good as you can get for bbing purposes.

That doesn't make any sense at all and I've never heard of such a thing. They are in a depleted and dry state. When I trained at Gold's, just before a show the most common complaint was how crappy and deleted they felt. In Jay's video leading up to the 2005 Olympia he sarcastically talked about moving heavy weights prior to a filming. Dorain said one of his biggest mistakes was trying to use the same weight pre-contest when he was depleted and dry making his muscles more susceptible to injuries They are at their strongest when they are bulked up and their muscles are fully hydrated.

Can you name some of those top competitors? You claim to have seen it but have you felt it yourself? Have you ever dieted down? I have many times and strength has always gone down -- even while using steroids.

Why would you be at your strongest when you are at your lightest bodyweight, carb depleted, and dehydrated. Why don't Power and Olympic lifters cut weight, carb deplete, and dry out before a meet where not only would they be stronger but be able to compete in a lower weight class?

hate to break it for you but that's about 150 kg/338 lbs.

Yellow colored plates are 15 kg(look at the yellow handles). It's one 20 kg and three 15 kg, each side.

Jay did however rep out 405 for 10 or so reps when yonger if I remember right

That would make more sense but how did you know? What kind of plates are that? Who makes them? I didn't even know they had plates with "handles"?

But again, as Bevo said, when you go back and look at the countless vids Jay has out there and how he trained, something didn't quite add up. Good instinct Bevo and good catch Maxx.

it's pretty much international standard colors for weights. Used in the Olympic games aswell and serious weightlifting comps..

Eleiko has these color codings aswell

You can say that, but Jay never had the chest of Arnold or Lou Ferrigno, that chest that's so massive that it just simply sags because there's so much muscle mass in there, also he never had the chest of Ronnie, who also always went all the way down, Jay did have amazing back, arms, legs, etc, his only true lagging body part was his chest, he improved his chest to a degree, but he never had that monster chest look, that droopy look, where the chest literally sags, like a balloon filled with red meat

It seems like nobody today has the pec development of Arnold and Lou, and to some extent, Serge Nubret. Franco had an exceptional chest but he didn't have the balloon-like "hanging look" of those guys. Except for Coleman; Heath, Jay, Dorian, Haney...none of the Olympians had the type of chest you described no matter how they benched. I'm not sure why that is as the rest of the body parts are so much larger today than in those days, especially in the quads and delts. Maybe it's an illusion. With the delts and arms much larger now it makes the pecs look smaller in comparison.

Jeeze, Coleman's arm, even just hanging relaxed was insane.

Yeah it's kind of like an optical illusion, Dorian Yates never had the chest Ronnie had, for example, some say Dorian had ''weak'' arms, but that was just an optical illusion too, his arms were 20'', but because his torso was so much larger, it almost looked like his arms were lagging
