I've been a scotch drinker for years but in the last year or two started appreciating bourbons. I've currently got Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve and Woodford Double Oak, along with a Evan Williams Bottled in Bond someone recommended that I find pretty harsh and has become my old fashioned Bourbon.
Here in Tampa area bourbons like Blantons, Weller, Buffalo Trace are kept for "Special customers" so I haven't got to try Blantons or Eagle Rare. What is your favorite?

If it has brown sugar doesn't that disqualify it from being called Bourbon?
-
Just cracked open some Old Grand Dad 114. High rye mashbill so if you think Evan white label is rough I wouldn't recommend it. ;D

Available in 60 & 103 proof
Stuff is delicious

Evan Williams is my go to bourbon. How can you beat a bourbon made in 1783...why that's aged well over 200 years!

Currently Basil Hayden's.
Rotate with Blanton's, Willet, Eagle Rare (10 only), Buffalo trace (this has gotten rarer).
Recently had Bib and Tucker's 6 year which was really well done.
Eagle Rare 17 used to be the best, and was 36 bucks a bottle. Now it's $800+ and you have to hit a store lottery to get it.
Haven't had Pappy in over 5 years. Last time it was available to me I was in Seattle, it was $75 a pour.

I'm not a fan of dark liquors... I prefer clear spirits. Every year at my two biggest parties (4th and Xmas) there are always some people who bring scotch and bourbons to give to me. Scotch I can pawn off on other friends sometimes, but not very many bourbon drinkers here. I did pass off a low end bottle of High West American Prairie bourbon to someone and they told me later that they and their friend drank it and couldn't remember shit. As in a mind wipe. They claimed it never happened to them before. LOL.
But I will give that BSB 103 up there a try. How are you normally mixing it? But I too, am wondering if you can add sugar to it and still call it bourbon.

Just mix up your usual Mai Tai, Gloria.

got a couple bottles of Pappy Bourbon. Luckily got them at cost before the retailers applied the 1000% markup.

I don’t currently have any bourbon on my liquor shelf but if I were to pick something up for a party or get together you can’t go wrong with Maker’s Mark.

Alcohol, is one of the biggest status symbols, displays of wealth, and is home to some of the most conceited aficianados, in the world.
You will never convince me that a $500-$1,000 bottle (of any spirit), tastes any better than a similar spirit, that costs $50 a bottle.
I get if you collect vintage wines and hard liquor as an investment, but to actually open the bottle and drink it?
You are just showing off.

Yes it's showing off
We've had a phenomenon here in Sweden called "vaskare", where young brats buy lots of Champagne (on their dads card) and then pour out several bottles in the sink (it's called "vaska") merely to impress chicks, their peers and the povertystricken peons.
Buy 8 expensive bottles of Champagne and then toss 6 of them in the sink just to see the expressions of others
It's a display of power / wealth

Bulleit Bourbon and Jim Beam extra aged. I find them good enough and worth their price. I tried some expensive stuffs but it's not that different from the $30 bottles.
I also have scotch, glenfiddich 12, cutty sark prohibition ( a good blended scotch), peat monster... as for people buying $500 bottles and more I think they are dumb and irresponsible unless they're millionaires and doesn't give a shit ( and still.. there's alot more to do with money than to spend it on whisky)
-
It's all subjective, of course, and you can find great bourbons for 30-50 regularly.
I will say I thought Pappy was worth the extra $ at 100 per.
Not at $2000 per though.

Expensive liquors are for fools with too much money. I spent several hours with a major liquor distributor in Nashville, Tennessee a few years ago and learned the trade in a nutshell. The owner told me liquor is 1) all about the bottle shape, 2) all about the story you can invent to sell it and 3) the liquor itself. Never mind that most of this booze is produced in steel tanks in large industrial operations - just tell the schmucks that it was on a ship that sailed across the equator a dozen times and they'll pay $1000 a bottle, lol.

The Joggers are doing that here too. Pouring expensive champagne on the ground at clubs as a type of "flex".
I remember when 50 Cent posted a video of him washing his Ferrari with champagne.

A lot of luxury items are way overpriced like that, they know people are dumb enough to buy them.
Watches, cars, wine, clothing, etc.
I have a friend who paid 20k for a table, just because it was made by some artist. It's the ugliest table i've seen in a long time.
People with a lot of money or people who are bad with money will pay for a name. It's status symbol.
No different than driving a MB or BMW.
I know a lot of people like this, BUT there are some expensive items that are legit when it comes to taste. Not all of them though.
-
and
I now also have Aeromoor Vodka and Knight Gabriello Santoni Ameretto. I find it important to have a wide range of drink options so I keep tonic water, ginger beer, and mini cokes in the fridge along with a bartender mixer set. Honestly I stick with products from the Hilton Head Distillery because I like to use local stuff. I have back my Hilton Head Spiced Rum so only my Amaretto isnt from HHD. it takes me quite some time to go through this as I usually have one drink a night and just use a touch of it for a mixed drink like a Highball or Foghorn

Not the case with bourbon.

I've actually never drank bourbon in my entire life, and that's saying a lot as I've had just about everything else. I've never liked beer, but drank it in HS as it was easily attainable with my big titted friend Becky at any gas station. She was 5'10" and hot, and I'm 5'4". She would just say I was her little brother when asked for ID even though I was a year older. LOL! I went on to become a JD fan for awhile, then Gin and Squirt, then a Tequila phase (always ended with either getting laid or in a fight), went on to Zema (fuck u all, it's awesome with grenadine), Mike's Hard Lemonade, and have settled on Vodka straight or as a Margarita.
Is bourbon smooth, or does it have a bitter bite to it like straight vodka does?
-

Depends on the bourbon.
It is definitely is acquired - best to dilute a bit to start. Eventually you can pick up all kinds of flavors.
-
Zero alcohol in my house but plenty of cannabis.
As a registered gun owner I can't have it or use it, but I definitely prefer it. Until it's federally legal you can't own a registered firearm in this state even though is now medically legal. If you get caught/tested it's 10-15 years in prison depending on being caught or killing someone in self defense. Not worth it.
CBD is OK though, and I am considering trying it with all of the medical issues, pain, and problems sleeping. Any experience with it, and what type to get? I get a flyer in the mail each week from a place in town, but there are like 20+ types with weird names and no description of what each does different from the other.
-
Why are getbigger's wines being kept outside of the basement wine cellar?
They keep better if they are not refrigerated along with giving some decor. I pull one from the rack in the morning for the frig so it can be chilled in the evening for drinking. If I have any left, i have a hand vacuum pump and stoppers to keep it fresh
If you want to learn about alcohol and booze, always go to a gay person for recommendations.

I'll be he paid nothing.

Hope to try one some day. Some say it's worth the retail but not secondary prices. Others say there are just as good options out there for much less. One thing I've learned is bourbon is as subjective as anything else. Ask a group "What are your thoughts on _________?" and the responses are all over the page from Nectar of the Gods, to Taste like piss but with a bitter after taste...

This is all 100% true.
If you like a slightly sweeter taste, Pappy will appeal.
I have had it numerous times, and still rank it the best I've had.
However, I would not pay secondary market prices, and didn't routinely buy it when it was readily available at 100 bucks.

There are a few times when the price is reflected in the product. 11 years ago I bought a bottle of Gran Centenario azul Gran Reserva from San Miguel de Allende. I paid $300 there. I only bought it because I liked the bottle. After trying it, I have bought it the last two times I went back. Slight increase in price, but nothing like you see for secondary prices here or online. This is actually a very very smooth and balanced tequila. This is a beautiful tequila made for sipping. They have a lower end product for under $30 which tastes nothing like the high end. Though it is still kind of decent. Not as good (to me) as Espolon. But certainly better than Don Julio (which has a nasty heaviness to the after taste) or Patron (which I find sickeningly sweet).

Between bourbon and a few rye's I have 42 bottles :)

Espolon to me is the greatest Tequilia deal.
A friend told me about it saying it was made 15 minutes from where he grew up. Said it has all the same shit as the expensive brands, but no marketing costs, so the price is low.
So, I use that if I'm going to sip it or mix it with a neutral mixer like soda water.
Other than that, it's Costco's Kirkland brand for mixing. Haven't found out which name brand makes it for Costco, but haven't looked either.

A good example of personal preference. I do buy Espolon for my mixing. It is a great value and a good tasting tequila. I have not likely tried the Centenario Azul but I have had a few like Herredura Sellecion Suprema and Clase Azul as well as a few others in the $200 to $400 range. My in laws love the Suprema, I find it and the Clase too sweet. My 2 favorites are Don Julio 1942 and the Jose Cuerva Famila Reserva. The former is so smooth it's hard to believe it's tequila, and without the sweetness I am not fond of. The JCFR is an oak bomb of flavor with a little more bite. I've grown to appreciate Mescal in that last couple years. I tried Sammy Hagars Santo Mezquila, and combination of both, and I was surprised how smooth is was at the price point. Reminded my of Don Julio 70 but with a little smoke.

Ever see a millennial take expensive booze in a shot glass and shoot it down or worse mix it with soda? I'm not rich so I won't buy expensive booze. I buy $20 dollar bottles of wine and you can find a lot of good ones for that price. I also drink beer and none of the bitter trendy millennial IPA beer.

For me, my choice of average tequila is :
Espolon>Mi Campo>1800
This is the last bottle I bought in SM when I was there in 2019. Haven’t opened it yet.

Never had alcohol as it's not something that interests me in the least. I don't mind if others do but there have been alcoholics in my family and that along with medical problems has always kept me from drinking the stuff. I have friends that brew beer and others that make wine. Good people all of them.
Besides, I don't need any help failing down ;D.

I'm expanding my bourbon experiences. I've recently bought an Old Forester Statesman that I really liked. I was at a bar on Thursday that had Old Forester, but just the basic. I thought.. "How bad can it be?" and ordered a glass. Night and day. They tell me the OF 1910 and 1920 are even better. The basic really didn't do it for me
-
As far as alcoholics go, Getbig knows what up. Keep y'all
shine wine on.

Alcohol status is a bit of a scam. Forever the Scott’s said 12 years old is the youngest you want your scotch but then recently they realized they could sell more if they promoted younger ones. Now they’re changing their tubes saying 8 years is perfect etc. basically they just want to reduce less waste from evaporation and sell more sooner.
With technology today they can age scotch in hours that tastes like years went by.

There's a sheep mentality among whisky drinkers. People tend to be ashamed to say that they don't appreciate a certain whisky because they're afraid to be the only one so they're just following the trends.
Whisky is definitely not worth buying by trend, age or high price point. I only keep it under nowdays $50 and find that there's good stuffs there that aren't that different from the +$100.
-
The difference between expensive whiskey and moderately priced whiskey is small.
You pay a lot more for that small difference.
Most people can't tell the difference.
Different brands taste different but it's not to say one is better. You can have a preference for one vs. another.
There is some awful stuff which is very young whiskey that is like drinking lighter fluid.
If you're mixing whiskey in drinks just get cheaper quality brand like Canadian Club.
CC is my go to whiskey for mixed drinks. It even is decent straight and it's very inexpensive.
$19 for 1.75 litre.
Evan Williams is only $20-$25 for 1.75 litre. It's decent bourbon grading at 89 out of 100.
-
If any of you guys like blended scotch then this is the best one I bought. It beats alot of blended scotch and blended malt from JW and Chivas etc Quality stuff with a good mouthfeel, non chill filtered, not watered down.. flavors are unique.
-
Unfortunately, only certain brands are available in my area.
That particular one is not.

Never tried it even if it's available. The price for the 12yo dewar's here is $45 so more than the 12yo glenfiddich that's why I never bought it

I have some very good bourbons that are not very expensive, 1792, Johnny Drum, Elijah Graig, Old Forester 1910 among others.

The bourbon drinkers I know aren't at all sheep. But I'm sure you're right about them existing. No other reason a secondary market exists for Blantons and a few others other than some sheep falling for it. Some of the people I talk to or hear talking about bourbon are quick to point out that you can find excellent bourbons in the $30-$45 range that are as good or better at least for them than the more sought after ones. Personally I've not had the pleasure of sampling some of the higher end ones yet, but I can't see myself paying through the nose for a bottle that is less than a hundred retail and someone wants 3 times that.

I picked up a Russell 10 year on sale for $23 that is on par with the few I've had in the $45 range, maybe even better. As you said, its sometimes just personal taste. Old Forester 1910 and 20 are on my list of ones I want to try soon.

Angels Envy, Gentleman Jack (technically Tennessee Whiskey).

Johnny Drum was a great bourbon under $30.
Buffalo Trace, Eagle 10, etc....all in the same boat.
I like Makers too at that price.

I had an Angels Envy and a Jack Single Barrell the other evening. I really liked the Angels Envy. I may get a bottle for the house next time I'm out shopping
I bought a Old Forester 1920 off recommendations from some friends. I liked the Statesman version at 95 proof but the 1920 at 114 I think it is was just too hot for me neat. After adding about a half ounce water it was much better.
