Alcohol, is one of the biggest status symbols, displays of wealth, and is home to some of the most conceited aficianados, in the world.

You will never convince me that a $500-$1,000 bottle (of any spirit), tastes any better than a similar spirit, that costs $50 a bottle.

I get if you collect vintage wines and hard liquor as an investment, but to actually open the bottle and drink it?

You are just showing off.

Expensive liquors are for fools with too much money. I spent several hours with a major liquor distributor in Nashville, Tennessee a few years ago and learned the trade in a nutshell. The owner told me liquor is 1) all about the bottle shape, 2) all about the story you can invent to sell it and 3) the liquor itself. Never mind that most of this booze is produced in steel tanks in large industrial operations - just tell the schmucks that it was on a ship that sailed across the equator a dozen times and they'll pay $1000 a bottle, lol.

Yes it's showing off

We've had a phenomenon here in Sweden called "vaskare", where young brats buy lots of Champagne (on their dads card) and then pour out several bottles in the sink (it's called "vaska") merely to impress chicks, their peers and the povertystricken peons.

Buy 8 expensive bottles of Champagne and then toss 6 of them in the sink just to see the expressions of others

It's a display of power / wealth

The Joggers are doing that here too. Pouring expensive champagne on the ground at clubs as a type of "flex".

I remember when 50 Cent posted a video of him washing his Ferrari with champagne.

A lot of luxury items are way overpriced like that, they know people are dumb enough to buy them.

Watches, cars, wine, clothing, etc.

I have a friend who paid 20k for a table, just because it was made by some artist. It's the ugliest table i've seen in a long time.

People with a lot of money or people who are bad with money will pay for a name. It's status symbol.

No different than driving a MB or BMW.

I know a lot of people like this, BUT there are some expensive items that are legit when it comes to taste. Not all of them though.

I now also have Aeromoor Vodka and Knight Gabriello Santoni Ameretto.   I find it important to have a wide range of drink options so I keep tonic water, ginger beer, and mini cokes in the fridge along with a bartender mixer set.  Honestly I stick with products from the Hilton Head Distillery because I like to use local stuff.  I have back my Hilton Head Spiced Rum so only my Amaretto isnt from HHD.  it takes me quite some time to go through this as I usually have one drink a night and just use a touch of it for a mixed drink like a Highball or Foghorn

Not only do they buy it for a status symbol but constantly let everyone know how much it cost.

I'm not a fan of dark liquors...   I prefer clear spirits.   Every year at my two biggest parties (4th and Xmas) there are always some people who bring scotch and bourbons to give to me.  Scotch I can pawn off on other friends sometimes, but not very many bourbon drinkers here.  I did pass off a low end bottle of High West American Prairie bourbon to someone and they told me later that they and their friend drank it and couldn't remember shit.  As in a mind wipe.  They claimed it never happened to them before.  LOL.

But I will give that BSB 103 up there a try.  How are you normally mixing it?  But I too, am wondering if you can add sugar to it and still call it bourbon.

I drink it straight at room temp

I keep a bottle of each proof in the house at all times

The look I get when sum1 try’s it for the first time

Some scotch is worth the money.  I buy a Johnny Walker Odyssey every two years for special occasions.  I get it through my friend who owns a bar but it’s still pricey.

Not the case with bourbon.

Not a liquor drinker, but have Bulleit, Buffalo Trace and Eagle Rare on hand in case a guest wants it. Eagle Rare is my choice if they insist on me joining the toast.

He's upped his rates.   Straw240 bragged that he made like $70K in January this year in the politics thread.  I think his site is now $30,000websites.com, but they are still probably shit.  It's all about marketing I guess. :-[

I've been a scotch drinker for years but in the last year or two  started appreciating bourbons. I've currently got Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve and Woodford Double Oak, along with a Evan Williams Bottled in Bond someone recommended that I find pretty harsh and has become my old fashioned Bourbon.

Here in Tampa area bourbons like Blantons, Weller, Buffalo Trace are kept for "Special customers" so I haven't got to try Blantons or Eagle Rare. What is your favorite?

I've actually never drank bourbon in my entire life, and that's saying a lot as I've had just about everything else.  I've never liked beer, but drank it in HS as it was easily attainable with my big titted friend Becky at any gas station.  She was 5'10" and hot, and I'm 5'4".  She would just say I was her little brother when asked for ID even though I was a year older.  LOL!  I went on to become a JD fan for awhile, then Gin and Squirt,  then a Tequila phase (always ended with either getting laid or in a fight),  went on to Zema (fuck u all, it's awesome with grenadine), Mike's Hard Lemonade, and have settled on Vodka straight or as a Margarita.

Is bourbon smooth, or does it have a bitter bite to it like straight vodka does?

Depends on the bourbon.

It is definitely is acquired - best to dilute a bit to start.  Eventually you can pick up all kinds of flavors.

Zero alcohol in my house but plenty of cannabis.

As a registered gun owner I can't have it or use it, but I definitely prefer it.  Until it's federally legal you can't own a registered firearm in this state even though is now medically legal.  If you get caught/tested it's 10-15 years  in prison depending on being caught or killing someone in self defense.  Not worth it.

CBD is OK though, and I am considering trying it with all of the medical issues, pain, and problems sleeping.  Any experience with it, and what type to get?  I get a flyer in the mail each week from a place in town, but there are like 20+ types with weird names and no description of what each does different from the other.

They keep better if they are not refrigerated along with giving some decor. I pull one from the rack in the morning for the frig so it can be chilled in the evening for drinking.  If I have any left, i have a hand vacuum pump and stoppers to keep it fresh

If you want to learn about alcohol and booze, always go to a gay person for recommendations.

Cool pic of someone's liquor! I wonder if they paid retail or secondary prices for it.

Being invited to drink a major player in Washington's private batch from Rip Van Winkle IS pretty cool.

I'll be he paid nothing.

got a couple bottles of Pappy Bourbon.  Luckily got them at cost before the retailers applied the 1000% markup.

Hope to try one some day. Some say it's worth the retail but not secondary prices. Others say there are just as good options out there for much less.  One thing I've learned is bourbon is as subjective as anything else. Ask a group "What  are your thoughts on _________?" and the responses are all over the page from Nectar of the Gods, to Taste like piss but with a bitter after taste...
