I served in the Canadian military for just shy of 4.5 years [February 8th, 2000 to June 15th, 2004, aged 18 to 22. I started the recruiting process at age 18, which is normal for military reservists].
I was the #2 marksman on my Basic Training course, served with the JTF-2, and was commended by the Canada's Prime Minister in 2002 for my service at the G8 Summit in Kananaskis.
I quit because George W. Bush Jr. said Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction, and started a war with a country on a false pretense [complete lie] that killed 600,000+ Iraqis, thousands of American troops, and destabilized Iraq, causing 37 million displaced persons in the region, and the rise of ISIS.
I'd call that "a problem".
So I quit. I couldn't be allied with the American military while they were being led by a treasonous scumbag.

As for me, I was getting ready to graduate HS when the first Irag war went down. I remember being at a party, and the dude had the tv on. Breaking news showed us bombing the fuck out of them, and all I can remember thinking is "why the fuck are we there and doing this?" I had recruiters come over from the Army, Marines, and Air Force which has a base down the road here. I wouldn't meet with the Navy as I don't like the idea of being in open water and trapped on a ship to die. Anyway, after hearing all of their pitches and asking them "this war is land's away, between two countries, and they have never attacked/set foot on our soil, how exactly am I being a patriot and protecting my country if I join your branch of service?" Army and Air Force danced around the question so they were ruled out. The Marine recruiter was either honest as hell or slipped up, and asked "where do you think we get all our oil from?" I asked, "so this war is actually about oil then?" and he said yes. Shortly b4 graduation from HS Sadam had started burning the oil fields, and it was on tv 24/7. No disrespect to those that went there and joined to fight, but I didn't care about two countries of muzzies and the oil supply enough to die for. If I had been of the generation when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, I would have made a call the next day to parachute me in and kill some mother fuckers ASAP.
No one on the left gives credit to Trump for no wars during his term except for a 1-2 day bombing in Syria to send a message that we aren't fucking around. O-homo told Trump that our greatest threat was NK, and I believe he was partially telling the truth (Iran and China are both up there as well). What did Trump do? He fucked with Kim Jung on Twitter a bit, and then made peace with him becoming the 1st President to ever cross over into the demilatarized zone and shake his hand. I LOVE this bit in particular. Exactly! I could not morally justify to myself ultimately being a soldier of George W. Bush Jr. due to his egregious lies about Saddam Hussein and Iraq - specifically Bush's lie about Saddam having weapons of mass destruction. I was seriously considering joining the Air Force because one of my best friends did so He was a year older. When he came back on leave I asked him about it. He said it wasn’t for anybody with a brain so I didn’t join. That said, I did sign up for the draft and most of my eligibility years were when Ronald Reagan was president. Everybody was talking about what a maniac he was and that he was going to get us in all kinds of wars. Had I been called, I would’ve gone but fortunately I wasn’t. I don’t see why I owe anybody an apology.

After Desert Shield/Storm and Iraqi/Enduring Freedom, more "alternative" media came into the fold. And the determination was that NOBODY who put on the uniform would be treated the way the Vietnam vets were ever again. The whole Rambo movie franchise was based on a returning Vietnam vet, who was treated like a leper when he came back home.
No matter what you thought of the politicians who green-lighted the conflicts, those who actually made the sacrifices would be treated with some dignity, at least.
Between the internet, talk radio, and certain cable news channels, thankfully our vets will continued to be honored (provided they served honorably) and NEVER get excoriated the way those who served in 'Nam did.

Yes, Vietnam Vets were treated like shit by libbies. My father and several cousins all had multiple tours over there. After 9/11, vets are treated far better than they've been in decades. I've had people offer to buy me beers (even though I don't drink); so, I simply accept a soda or tea. Senior citizens give much love when they find out you're a veteran.
Just this past Veterans' Day, I made the rounds with my kids to get them free ice cream, frozen yogurt, (boneless) hot wings, and other treats that many franchises were given to those who served in our armed forces. ;D
If you live in a town with a major military command (i.e Mayport, FL), you get perks year round.

Thanks, Nat! I am going to order the film in either Blu Ray or if the pressing gets decent reviews for picture quality, the 4k version. I have a lot of movies, mostly from the 30s on up to the 80s but have some of the newer ones. I just got the 4k of "Gladiator" as I read that the transfer was good and it is!
I bought the homage film to the 3 Stooges (2012) last week on Blu Ray for myself and a copy for my oldest brother and his wife. The movie "Aliens" scared me stupid in the theater but I bought the collection and on that film I sometimes fast forward as spidery-bugish things just freak me out bad. Years ago a large wolf-spider got in our break area at work and came at me like a spider monkey ;D. That thing was HUGE!!!! I know...huge for a spider but dammit spiders are like politicians, they suck the life outta ya! I picked up one of the lunch tables and hit it with it.
The guys still tease me about that. I am just terrified of some things. I am going to see if Best Buy or Amazon has the film now. Thanks again, brother!
