So last week I mentioned that I started back doing dumbell presses and only got 90 for 2 reps and someone mentioned it was likely my form. Well, looks like was correct. Practiced form with 20lb dumbells before I attempted it again and I got that shit up. Bones were creaking but it went up...laid in the floor for 10 minutes afterwards
55lb -12 reps
70lb- 10 reps
90lb - 5 reps
100lb - 2 reps...almost 3 reps

The word is had. Vince had some muscle.
This is as dramatic a physique change as Marty Champions. Vince is looking as rotund as Onlyme.
I thought the Goodrum weight is out of control thread was an obnoxious troll job but it might be a legitimate warning.
It is saddening watching this happen.

Vince you are right.
Not as fat but in comparison to what you were as opposed to what you weigh now. It's the same as Keith posting his old pictures in shape in comparison to his later days.
The last couple of years you've always had size with some fat but in the picture you posted you look very heavy, especially in comparison to other pics you've posted. Im not trying to be disrespectful but I was caught off guard by the change.
I didnt mean to be so offensive and I do apologize.
I hope you achieve your goals.
-
Good job, Vince.
I would caution you about posting bodybuilding related content on this forum however.
Please stick to miscellaneous nonsense.

I can’t see the video cause no Instagram but I will say I have used straps a couple times in. My life to press’s dB it felt awesome being able to grip the bar so hard,I was definitely stronger when I tried them.

There is no reason at all at 40+ years old to be doing this. Think more reps with compound movements, think sweating and getting that heart rate up.
You want to think about being able, capable, and functional for daily activities. For example - cool you bench 100 lb db - but if you are gassed the f out like that fat bastid Kamali after 10 seconds of actual exertion, what the heck is the purpose of this?
Awesome job in the gym. But if your goals are to get back to where you were, doing the same things when we were 25 is not going to yield the same results at 45.

That's not how straps work. For a better (harder) grip use chalk.
Maybe you benefited from the slightly additional support the straps gave your wrist. In that case you'd gain far more benefit using wrist wraps.
Maybe you benefited from the wraps making the bar slightly fatter. In that case you'd benefit far more using something like fat grips.
Any way you frame it. Lifting straps for pressing = retardation

I counted 9 very strict reps with the 100's. Impressive Coach.
Plus, you still look pretty lean.
By comparison ,I look like a f'n white whale , that worries about getting harpooned in the gym. :D

I suppose there might be situations where you'd want them.

I used to rep 315 no problem on the bench. Now - I never go above 225. Last time I tried 315, I felt this weird thing in shoulder like it was going to result in a tear. If we are injured, we can't train. If we can't train, then what? The cost / benefit analysis simply doesnt make sense to go really heavy any more.
We all want to see you succeed here. ;)

Success needs to come from a different mindset.
For me, it was being asked to do a Tough Mudder in 2013, and when I started training, realized I couldn't run a 5k without stopping multiple times.
Too many feel that running, sprinting, conditioning, etc will drop their reps on the bench or lose muscle or something, when it's just something that takes getting used to.
Condition + mobility can be combined with getting stronger after 40, and should be emphasized.

Hey shit for brains. I have healing slap tear in my left shoulder and severe tendonitis in my right forearm. Anytime you want to train just holler

Did 1 hour of weights w little rest followed by 1 hour ruck this am. :)
This weekend was hill runs, tire flips, make shift raft carries with a full plate vest, ammo, pistol/rifle. Shoot under cover after each round. It sucked. My conditioning is horrible

LOL, I'm not proud, but honest about it.
It's like admitting you screwed some ugly skank , the day after.
On a positive note, I'm on an actual DIET and been consistent lately on lifting and cardio, etc
I've dropped 7 lbs in 3 weeks , so far....loooooooooooooooo oooooong way to go still. :'(
-
Diet is the worst word.
Need to find foods you love, that correspond to your goals, and eat them regularly, so it becomes a lifestyle change, not a diet.
Once you find that, the eating aspect of being in good condition because much simpler.

Dont see what the big deal is...I lift sometimes with straps because I'm too lazy to take them off.

Not bad i guess.
Everyone needs goals. ;D
No real point in going that heavy on DB's anymore Vince, but if it makes you happy then go for it.

Straps pulled so tight that it hurts makes your grip much harder and thus making my hand one with the bar. I did it a few times and it always got me a little more weight or a few more reps.you can say that’s not how they work but they did for me.I didn’t use them deadlifting 700 lbs, barbell rows 405-455 or dB rows 200lbs so I don’t need them but a strong guy I knew said try them pressing and it felt pretty good.
Say as you will but I know what I did.

And pressing with straps is your solution? Well done for doubling down on the retardation.
Also I generally try avoid training with vertically challenged individuals. Requires too much messing around and adjusting of equipment. Thanks anyway.

Well I've done the 180s so I'm sure others can do 200+

I already suspected this would be the case and yeah you just described the function of wrist wraps which do the job many times better.
You however don't go around posting about training high level athletes and calling yourself "coach", so it's a non issue. But for someone who does, it's strong retardation.
-
Well I've done the 180s so I'm sure others can do 200+
I've never seen anyone row 200 pound DB's for reps without straps.
The power lifters and strongmen bro's i trained with years ago couldn't do it.
I could do the 160's for 10-12 reps with just chalk. Maybe 2 reps with the 180's. And i have massive hands.
Sometimes i forget all the record setting lifters who post here. ;D

LOL...so you can't see how using straps while pressing would't help with tendonitis by tightening the wrist which would in turn compress the extensors in addition to not having the weight drop on my face. Fuckin rookie. Go back to your Curves class lol

Now you triple down on the retardation. I've explained twice in this thread there's something called wrist wraps which are far superior at this task, and are actually designed to tighten around and support the wrist. You can even get wrist wraps with lifting straps "Coach".
Think it's time for to get back on the short bus. Don't forget your lifting straps to help you on..

They don’t work for me. Period. I’ve been to PT, I’ve tried the wraps, I’ve taped my wrists to the middle of my forearm and still doesn’t work like straps. If you want to start a thread just you and I about training, training with and around injuries....do it. Then we can see who’s riding the short bus, Junior

I've already posted that straps make the diameter of the bar slightly thicker which could help someone feel more secure pressing if they had wrist, elbow or other stability issues, but again they are the wrong tool. Now go use wrist wraps and thicker bar or add grips and stop using lifting straps like a moron. If you still want to be a complete imbecile at least use straps that come wrist wraps. You're maybe getting a 1/3 of the benefits you could be getting using just straps.

Awesome job in the gym. But if your goals are to get back to where you were, doing the same things when we were 25 is not going to yield the same results at 45.
It's better to do 225 with the wide grip, instead of jerking those dumbbells into the launch position. I don't do presses with dumbbells anymore (not for shoulders or for chest). Barbells are safer and easier. And with a wide grip, you can squeeze the pecs the same way as you can with the dumbbells.

Any exercises that hurt my joints or tendons I either don't do at all or do them dead last after fatiguing the muscle with other exercises.
For triceps, overhead extensions are done last (if at all), after dips. And they're done with a cable. Of course, last year during the lockdowns, I had no choice but to do skull crushers and overhead extensions. But, for some reason, using water jugs as weights didn't hurt my elbows that much. Perhaps, it's due to the center of mass shifting while moving.

That beats me, the best I ever did was 10 strict reps ( with straps) with a 150 lb DB ( biggest I ever saw on any gym rack I trained at).
Today , I ended my back work with 10 reps with a 100 lb DB ( with strap) , which was the biggest DB at this gym.
That kicked my old ass ,but at least I'm lifting "real wts" and off my Bowflex 8)

Good tip.
I found doing a superset of cable crosses or pec dec right before incline DB presses is effective.
This reduces the DB wt you need and you really feel it in the upper pecs.

Thanks. I did supersets like that when I had to use the fitness center where my girlfriend (now wife) lived, until I got my gym membership back.

Kid, I’ve been training for 47 years. And while I will agree that thicker bar would help for some it won’t for me personally. We were sponsored by Fat Grips when I had my facilities and great for grip strength the fact remains (and I did forget to mention this) that I have broken pinkie finger and still can’t grip. Might want to go back in my history and see what I did with my athletes.

Just add "up to" "the middle of my forearms" and it makes sense.

It's true that instability reduces the output of the targeted tissue, the pec in this case, though barbells put the pec in a compromised position. Same with shoulders potentially.
One thing that is a pet peeve of mine is the range of motion with dumbells vs barbell. It's always said the range of motion is longer, and therefore better, with dumbells. But it's just not true, with dumbell presses you get a much shorter range of motion since you can't get as deep due to the plates hitting your body. Check any video of any bb doing db presses and see where the hands are at the bottom vs where they would be with a barbell hitting your chest.
-

I have never heard anyone advocating wide grip bench as a safe alternative on benching.

What’s confusing. I used athletic tape. Didn’t mean to put “like straps”
-
This is from yesterday with 120’s. Because of that finger I can’t completely lock out my elbow. Even if I extend it without weight and again, can’t completely close or grip with the pinkie finger
-

Funny how old school guys like ric drasin could bench without a pinky finger, he cut it off using Joe Golds old saw. so i really do not understand your post. Are you maybe talking about a tendon problem?
-
Side note.. i think you "Coach" should get an MRI i think you have a problem in your neck. I am guessing C6/7
-
I have a friend who I've trained with for 15 years who gripped the bar on benches about an inch wider on one side. It allowed him to bench despite a completely fried shoulder. That shoulder stopped hurting after a decade, now the other shoulder hurts.
Yea I could've told him not to barbell bench but he's not the type to take kindly to that type of disrespect and would tell you to go fuck yourself.
-

Didn't you mention a SLAP tear?
-
Vincenzo - think about this - do a farmer carry with two 45's around the perimeter of the gym, then - then do 10 step ups on the flat bench w the 45s in each hand - then grab 1 45 - both hands - 10 x - Squat - bicep curl - press over head - tri cep extension
THEN
bang out the heavy DB presses.
Your welcome. ;)
-
I have never heard anyone advocating wide grip bench as a safe alternative on benching.
I have. A number of the old-timers did them that way, because those uprights were narrow. From Serge Nubret, Sergo Oliva, and even Lee Haney, that form of bench press really hits the chest well.

Your welcome. ;)
Haha if he does get to the point of his morbidly obese back on the bench it will only be so they can hook the defibrillator up to him

He sounds like a good man.

I have. A number of the old-timers did them that way, because those uprights were narrow. From Serge Nubret, Sergo Oliva, and even Lee Haney, that form of bench press really hits the chest well.
But those aren't safety reasons, it's because they had idiotic equipment.
Everything I've heard for pressing safely is a medium grip, bending the bar to force the shoulder into an advantageous position..etc....
Wide grip was said to cause strain.

I forgot. Pathetic. Gym selfies. If you are there for 60-90 min you better not have time for a damn picture.

Didn't you mention a SLAP tear?
Yes..grade 1-2. But that was last year. I’ve been dealing with the tendinitis for about 3 years probably because of the broken pinkie finger

As soon as my shoulder started hurting I stopped closed chain exercises (pressing movements) and went to open chain. Still hurt but I lessened the risk of further injury.

Yet, I don't recall any major superstars of yore having any pec tears or strains. In the pic I posted, Nubret is hitting 405 with that grip.
Most of the time when I do it, I use the Smith Machine so I don't have to worry about pinching my hands on the uprights when I rack the weight.
I do the medium grip when I'm more concerned with putting up raw numbers. But, for really hitting the chest (especially after doing inclines or dips), I love that wide grip, especially since I don't have to go much higher than 225 to really pound my pecs.
