Geez, wtf is going on
Holy shit!!
Thanks for posting this, Vince. My 17th [I think] Facebook ban ends today. I'll be sharing this.
To address your question:
First off, I'm glad you and I agree here. Van Bilderass does not think this year has had more bodybuilder deaths than other years.
I disagree. Also, we've never had this many HIGH PROFILE bodybuilder deaths in one year.
Think about it this way:
This year's expected 212 Olympia champion died. AND arguably, Shawn Rhoden could have been the expected open champion had he been allowed to compete.
Here is a partial list of pro deaths this year [feel free to add to this]:
- Phil Hermon
- Andy Haman
- Brad Hollibaugh
- John Meadows
- Matt Mendenhall
- Leon Brown
- Laura Bass
- Daniel Saxton
- Sophia Graham
- Alina Kosinova
- Orlando Gallucci
- Megan Elizabeth
- Billy Smith
- Sam Roth
- Bob Bonham
- Jennifer Hernandez
- Wolfgang Schober
- Jake Kazmarek
- Jenny Lynn
- Mike Sheridan
- Karen Pang
- George Peterson
- Shawn Rhoden
- Victor Richards
And Melissa Coates from Thunder Bay - although that's a bit of a looser connection.
Vic would have been turning 58 around March or May - is that right, Vince? I think he was born the same year as Ronnie Coleman [1964].
I'm still flabbergasted by this.
Am I missing any of the major deaths there? We could add George Butler as a fitness industry personality, and there was a female competitor who died last month right? I think her name was Kim.
This has been the biggest year for bodybuilder deaths so far.

Billy Smith....not a pro...but top NPC guy and original American Gladiator, Thunder.

Good post!
I feel bad for forgetting this, but there was a gym owner who was well known too, but he may have been suicide.

Bob Bonham...yes...suicide.

Maybe being big and taking drugs isn't healthy?

Bob Bonham...yes...suicide.
That's him! I feel bad for forgetting Bob's name for a moment there.
I actually would say his death is related to this whole recent health "crisis", if his gym closed due to mandates, etc.
Although I didn't confirm that - but I believe that was reported here.
I will go amend my list of bodybuilders and fitness personalities in the bodybuilding industry who died this year.
-
Most of these guys and girls are hitting the same age more or less. 40s-60s.
-
Did he every make anything of himself other than a fool disguised as a drug addict posing as a bodybuilder? If not then what a waste of years...
-
Rip

Maybe being big and taking drugs isn't healthy?
Fair enough - but since when did bodybuilders not do that? Not one year since 2004 have there been this many deaths, with only one on the list [Matt Mendenhall] making it past 60.
Something's up.
I think it's blood clotting due to the vaccine. Potentially from it being injected intravenously about 1 in 30 times due to not aspirating the syringe. I think this also explains the greater number of myocarditis cases in young males, as they have more robust blood vessels [greater surface area].

You can go back and look at the deaths of bodybuilders and steroid using wrestlers. It's not just a current thing. We just are more aware due to internet instantly reporting this stuff.

he was a freak....in terms mass, couldnt get on stage and do it but still a shock...

No - there have been more deaths this year.
I've been following this since 2004, since the first pro bodybuilder to have competed in the "chemical era" of bodybuilding [1992 onwards] died [Sonny Schmidt - who was also the oldest to compete in that era, aside from Lou Ferrigno, who only competed a few times].
Bodybuilders from that era started dropping off from there, with Don Youngblood and Paul Demayo dying in 2005, among others.
2021 has had more bodybuilder deaths than any year since 2004 when I started following.
Yes - the internet puts this news in our faces, but the internet isn't new.
-

I think Dave Palumbo said that bodybuilders are perhaps impacted more due to having thicker blood [implication: from juice].
Is this a theory worth looking in to?
The shots seem to cause clotting, so I don't see why not.

That's possible, I don't think it is a bad theory. But then I'd see the bigger issue as them not having their bloodwork monitored to keep their counts at an acceptable range. Or not taking an aspirin.

I agree with this 100%. I know the drugs play a huge role but there is nothing new in that department. The only thing new is the vaccine.
I have a hunch the vaccine exasperates side effects from the PED's as well as poor blood markers.
-
750,000 Americans died of Covid, and high bodyweight is a known risk factor for severe disease/death, not surprising that bodybuilders are impacted at a higher rate
-
What the fuck? Tainted gear?
Bad time to be taking steroids all around.

I’ve been talking aspirin everyday for the past 15-20 years. Ive always suggested my clients do the same as well especially with the Chinavirus and “vaccines”. I can’t recall any “guru” have their clients take aspirin. Probably could have saved some lives

RIP Vic Richards. That M&F article back in the day was one of the greatest features of a freak bodybuilder ever. Kinda figured he wasn't going to live into old age being that large.

They swing back and forth wrt if It's worth it. The data can't be that clear in favor of it since a baby aspirin isn't recommended in all countries. I seem to remember som data saying aspirin maybe prevented 1 heart attack in 5000. Then you factor in the ulcer risk.
-
I saw a post somewhere , where they asked Vic Richards what is causing all these pro bbers early deaths. victor said he was going to answer the question on his podcast. i guess it was not to be. sorry to hear of his passing.

In the US it's recommended for those between 40-70 w history of heart attack, CAD, surgeries and/or those considered at high risk for major adverse cardiac events. Juiced up bodybuilders are probably in the "high risk" category but the risk: benefit ratio is less favorable than once thought. Gastrointestinal bleeds as well as cerebral hemorrhage are the main concerns.
Either way, Coach is exposing himself to a fair amount of liability by providing unqualified medical advice IMHO

Just about every trainer in the world would be exposing themselves to liability in one way or the other if that were the case.

Taking the aspirin after breakfast pretty much eliminates the risk of ulcers or gastrointestinal bleeding.

How will Dave Palumbo explain this? More of his hereditary bullshit?

After I recovered from Covid I upped my dose to 325mg for about a month and a half then started to taper down because it was destroying my stomach. I'm back down to my normal doses of 81mg in the morning then 81mg before bed.
-

He started talking about how it's odd since he downsized in the past few years because he was concerned about his health lmao
Everyone gets concerned in old age when they are fucked, problem is it's too late.

I get that - but 2021 has had something like 2-3 the number of high profile bodybuilder deaths than any other year rhat I recall.
So what changed?
Bodybuilders have been abusing drugs for DECADES now.
I don't think Olympia competitors 25 years ago were using less than guys today.
35 years ago - yes. 25 years ago - ALL DRUGS. Same as today.

Don't bother with aspirin. Just eat lots of apples or take rutin (in apples, among other things). I really can't believe the genius bodybuilding gurus out there haven't talked about rutin...

Dave can be a bit delusional at times - when John Meadows died, Dave kept talking about how healthy John was.
Dude looked like a walking to heart attack, FFS.
Does anyone have a backstory for these screenshots? What kind of a fucking loser makes humour out of dying like this? These pictures offend me. And I don't get offended easily:

I take one 81 mg. coated asprin a day.....should I be taking more?
I`ve had lots of pain in my life but one day while watching TV on my couch,I felt the strangest chest pain............like nothing I ever felt before in my life.............inanely painful but nothing running up my left arm as I gues is quite common.
My wife was sleeping in the nest room so I thought I should wake her up......of course I thought heart attack immediately.
Anyway I decided to try to ride it out........then thought about calling 911 ......anyway I rode it out alright..........it lasted an excrutiating full 20 minutes, then went away as suddenly as it appeared.
Had it again 2 days later for 3-5 minutes.
That was months ago,it has never returned since,.....YET........thank God.

bloodwork is kinda useless on it's own though, i'd venture to say most of them don't know something as simple as their agatston score.

honest question, lets take meadows who had a cardiac event, and still was doing whatever and training hard i assume.shouldnt anyone with sense and it could be a clean lifter as well not train anywhere close to what they did prior to there heart attack or cardiac issue.most dr's i assume would say you cannot train hard or heavy ever again.

I think the drugs are different today actually. I don't know for sure but it's probably different types of steroids, different dosages (they all lie) and additional drugs beyond just steroids. They're also taking drugs that they call "natural supplements" which can also have big effects. It's a lot of variables.
-
I don't think you'll get any additional heart benefits beyond 81 mg, but will get higher bleeding risk.
During the time I upped the dose (lol) after I recovered it was mostly for the clotting factor. Other than that I agree 100%
-
Taking the aspirin after breakfast pretty much eliminates the risk of ulcers or gastrointestinal bleeding.
Incorrect, aspirin, like all NSAIDS, work by inhibiting the enzymes that are involved in the production of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins play a critical role in maintaining gastric mucosal integrity, as well as inflammatory processes within the body (and several other roles)
You are correct that aspirin shouldn't be taken on an empty stomach, but that's because aspirin itself is an acidic compound. taking it with food helps buffer the pH reducing effects

Attended one of his seminars in and around 1988. In Toronto, across from the city’s (technically, Mississauga) hub of bodybuilding (at the time), Gold’s Gym (sadly, long gone).
Guy was absolutely ahead of his time, size-wise. In that time, his mass was unbelievable.
Spoke with such a heavy accent it was all-but-impossible to understand him.

Just something to consider that I was thinking about, could be speculation but...
It is well known that athletes who take part in resistance training can/do develop Left ventricular wall thickness & left ventricular hypertrophy (https://academic.oup.com/ehjcimaging/article/10/3/350/2396955 (https://academic.oup.com/ehjcimaging/article/10/3/350/2396955)).
Moreover, it's a well known fact that bodybuilders/weightlifters who use steroids tend to develop left ventricular hypertrophy. Anabolic steroids may potentiate concentric left ventricular hypertrophy with decreasing ventricular compliance without affecting cardiac function (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9113423/ (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9113423/)).
What's left ventricular hypertrophy? Left ventricular hypertrophy is when the heart’s left pumping chamber (left ventricle) has thickened and may not be pumping efficiently. As a result of having left ventricular hypertrophy, you can develope stroke, congestive heart failure, coronary heart disease, and sudden cardiac death.
Now, what if we introduce an element of chaos into the fold? No, not the moderator, but instead a vaccine that has been known to induce myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) in "athletes" that already have left ventricular hypertrophy. You guessed it, these individuals now have a higher likelihood for sudden cardiac arrest and death.
Question now becomes, how many of them were vaccinated?

Sounds like angina.
Angina is chest discomfort caused by poor blood flow through the blood vessels of the heart muscle. Typically, this occurs when the arteries supplying blood to the heart muscles become narrowed by a build-up of fatty substances. The reason this occurs is best illustrated below:
Consider visiting a Cardiologist, he/she will likely run a battery of tests starting with an EKG in the office and likely followed by an Echocardiogram. Additionally, they might order:
- Exercise stress test
- Nuclear stress test
- Cardiac CT scan - helps your cardiologist see calcium deposits in your arteries that can narrow the arteries
- Cardiac catheterization and angiogram - Your interventional cardiologist will insert a catheter into an artery or vein in your groin (neck or arm can be used to) and will lead it up into your heart. Once in the heart, they inject contrast dye and take scans of the heart, this is done to visualize any blockages in heart arteries.
If they diagnose you with coronary arterial disease (assuming it's mild CAD), they will start you on things like:
- Aspirin (ASA)
- Statin (cholesterol lowering meds)
- Blood pressure meds
- Nitroglycerin.
If the coronary arterial disease is moderate, they could then decide to do a:
- Angioplasty and stent placement (percutaneous coronary revascularization)
If you have serious occlusions in your heart arteries and multiple vessels require reperfusion, they could instead suggest a:
- Coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG)
Moral of all this shit is that you NEED to get your heart checked. Aspirin won't do it alone, although as an antiplatelet it is a good start, you might very well require increased pharmacologic intervention and/or even an interventional procedure.
Best of luck my brother,

I ran across this posting about many soccer players having heart issues.
Not sure if true, maybe somebody that follows futbol would know better if there has been an uptick in issues.

Victor Richards’ Daughter: “My Father Is Alive And Well"
https://generationiron.com/victor-richards-bodybuilder-alive/?fbclid=IwAR0VDMFYBP5UXv8VvQPvO0-B6beLRL9oqZ4PfYQVco916jzxrNVdKdHgknc
On Wednesday November 10th, Generation Iron Fitness Network alongside other bodybuilding outlets reported the passing of legendary bodybuilder Victor Richards. Initial reports speculated a heart attack – but no official statement or cause of death was confirmed. Generation Iron can now confirm that earlier reports of Victor Richards’ death are false. It has been confirmed by a family member that Richards is alive and well.
Victor Richards’ daughter, who preferred to remain anonymous for her and her family’s privacy, directly reached out to Generation Iron to confirm that he was still alive and well. She had spoken with Richards today – after the initial reports of his passing. She provided an official statement to Generation Iron:
“I’M PLEASED TO ASSURE YOU THAT MY FATHER IS IN FACT ALIVE AND WELL. AN INACCURATE FACEBOOK POST HAS CAUSED A WILDFIRE OF FALSE INFORMATION THROUGHOUT SOCIAL MEDIA AND NEWS OUTLETS. THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR CONCERN, MY FAMILY APPRECIATES ALL OF THE LOVE THE BODYBUILDING COMMUNITY HAS SHOWN TO MY DAD.”
Original reports seem to stem from a tribute post released by notable bodybuilder Andreas Cahling alongside other industry reports seemingly confirming the news. At the time of Generation Iron’s original reporting – we were unable to receive confirmation from family or an official announcement from Victor Richards’ or a representative of Richards. Due to this new information confirmed by a family member – we would like to retract our original report.
Originally born in Nigeria, Richards gained a passion for bodybuilding early on in his life. He was a three-sport athlete in high school who excelled in football, wrestling, and track and field. This is when he began to improve his physique. Richards earned his pro card while in Nigeria.
Victor Richards’ competitive history began in 1982 when he entered The American Cup. He finished first in the teenage heavyweight division and second overall. Richards continued to work on his physique and by age 18, he grew to 240 pounds. Richards entered The Orange County Muscle Classic where he finished fourth. At 19 years old, Richards was becoming a well known name and that only continued as he progressed.
Victor Richards began appearing on the cover of fitness magazines at 21 years old. He carried a massive frame that weighed close to 300 pounds of solid muscle. In 1992, Richards entered the 1992 Nigerian Championships and finished in first place. This is where he earned his Pro card. Despite the achievement, Richards did not compete in the IFBB. There was a bit of resistance that kept Richards from entering an NPC competition and taking the next step toward the IFBB.
Victor Richards competed in just five competitors during his career and earned four victories. It remains a mystery why he was never able to compete in the IFBB despite earning his Pro card in Nigeria.

I get that - but 2021 has had something like 2-3 the number of high profile bodybuilder deaths than any other year rhat I recall.
So what changed?
Bodybuilders have been abusing drugs for DECADES now.
I don't think Olympia competitors 25 years ago were using less than guys today.
35 years ago - yes. 25 years ago - ALL DRUGS. Same as today.
Do we know any relation to Covid on any of these? I can see a long term steroid user having a different immunity system profile which could cause Covid to be more pronounced in them.
One other BIG difference is fentanyl and opiods.

I'm reminded of the comic story "For the Love of Death!" from the May/June 1952 issue of the Haunt of Fear - by Graham Ingels.
The dude wanted to see how people would react to his death. It didn't end well:

Dated my first wife after we divorced. Used to train at Bulldog gym in Glendora at the time
Glad it was after the divorce. You wouldn't want to end up "kissing Nat King Cole"!
-
I knew a lady who dated Vic in the mid 90's. She trained out of Golds Gym, North Hollywood...where Vic trained at times too. Years later she said he was a user. Said she had tomake midnite runs multiple times a week toget him pints of Rum Raisin Haagen Daz. And that he eventually roughed her up physically.

I knew a little bit a professional female bodybuilder and her boyfriend in Venice in the late 80s/early 90s period. She had prepared a menu for him (them) of various basic bodybuilding meals and all he had to do was ask her to make one, i.e. "make a #4". I admired the efficiency of this, but was frankly shocked at the setup.

750,000 Americans died of Covid, and high bodyweight is a known risk factor for severe disease/death, not surprising that bodybuilders are impacted at a higher rate
Let's break that down in a way that explains this properly:
The average age of an American "COVID" death is 84.
94% of those who died had 2.6 underlying conditions, ON AVERAGE.
That means fhat they were statistically in the last two years of their lives.
6% died specifically of COVID, mainly because of medical malpractice like sending people home with treatment, and telling them to come back when they are blue in the face, then putting them on ventilators, which CAUSED them to die.
6% of 750,000 is 45,000.
So 45,000 Americans aged 84 died.
Who would have otherwise died at 87, based on actuarial science tables.
Don't you think if 750,000 random healthy Americans died, YOU MIGHT ACTUALLY NOTICE THIS HAPPENING?
LMAO.
My dumb shit friend said more died of COVID than WWII.
HAHAHAHA.
YEAH, because 750,000 Americans who were about to die anyway is on par with 600,000x 22-year-old men dying.
Let's totally ignore lifespan lost here.
Liberals are such dumb shits. I wish they could just continue to drive in their cars alone wearing a mask, or walk outside IN THE RAIN wearing a mask [I saw this today multiple times].
Absolutely deplorable illiterate dumb shits.

This is very tame compared to some of the things I've encountered.
A lot of women who suffered abuse in previous relationships end up with something akin to Stockholm syndrome where they crave aspects of that mistreatment. If they subsequently end up with another guy who knows how to conduct that mistreatment in a "safe" way then sometimes they are willing to push things to extremes!

If lifestyle illnesses (obesity, diabetes, high bp etc) or genetic factors (cancer, heart issues etc) don't catch up with you, and you make it into your 80s as a "healthy" elderly person then you have a great chance of living another decade and eventually die of "old age".

Vic's interview video was "hilarious." I think Dave actually fell asleep a couple of times. Dave tried to get Vic to divulge his heaviest PED stack. After 5 minute story about not liking injections he said 2 shots of Deca per week and 3 Anavar a day.

I think Dave Palumbo said that bodybuilders are perhaps impacted more due to having thicker blood [implication: from juice].
Is this a theory worth looking in to?
The shots seem to cause clotting, so I don't see why not.
Testosterone can raise one's hematocrit which raises the possibility of blood clots and cause strokes. High hematocrit is a form of dehydration which suggests thick blood...too many red blood cells. It is the opposite of anemia. Staying hydrated and donating blood are some ways to keep hematocrit down.

Please don't math with me.
Dumb phaggot. Fucking phaggot.
I am intrigued when liberals start to talk about math, and the low probability of vaccine deaths, yet can't use that apparent understanding of probability to see that the Covid-19 virus ITSELF is an incredibly low threat, with about a 1 in 10,000 chance of dying for a healthy person under age 65.
That's roughly the same probability as being injured by a toilet bowl, FFS.
In the USA, 68% of Americans who died had SIX OR MORE underlying conditions.
SIX OR MORE.
So stop with the mathematically illiterate phaggotry!
And according to the FDA, 78% were either overweight or obese cheeseburger eating pieces of shit who shove hamburgers down their mouths and eat cheeseburgers.
Healthy people dying of this virus are NOT even remotely regular occurrences.
How many non-overweight people under age 65 with no health conditions do you know PERSONALLY who died of this?
PERSONALLY = people who you met in real life and know on a first name basis, and who live in your province. Not someone you met on Grinder and shagged when you visited Saskatchewan.
HOW MANY? ANSWER THE QUESTION.
Regarding the Canadian data, thus far, 18,079 of 1,713,720 in the 80+ age group have died.
That means 98.9487% did not die, and 1.055% died.
1%!
Even in the 80+ age group, Canada has only lost 1% of it's population so far! And this virus scares you!
So for you to say the life expectancy is X years for the average Canadian who reaches age 80 is fine [I find it hilarious that you understand how to interpret data correctly to support a completely false conclusion though, lol], but THESE ARE NOT AVERAGE CANADIANS.
These are among the 1% least healthy, even AMONG Canadians age 80+ who died.
Do you seriously not wonder how TWO YEARS INTO THIS BULLSHIT, no one you know is dying?
How can you literally not see any deaths, and STILL believe the LYING narrative of COVID being as lethal as originally claimed??
God, open your eyes! Do you see ambulances wailing? Do you see funeral processions driving around? Do you see people going door to door and saying "Bring out your dead" like they did during the Spanish Flu?
No, you do not.
So STFU.
The mortality risk of this virus is not even NOTICEABLE TO ANYONE IN REAL LIFE. The dust has settled down. Again - shut up!
Fuck.
-

Matt, you are awesome. Love reading your posts. Please continue. ;D
Thank you, ARMZ! ;D
I try to just stick with the most basic facts possible, and be EXTREMELY specific.
At this point, this is literally LONG DIVISION. And it goes to show me that anyone still afraid of this virus doesn't understand long division.
Here's another example, from Canada:
As of the first 657 days of the P-demic [two days - Friday] 29,056; Canadians have died of Covid-19.
That's just under 45 Covid-19 deaths per day.
There are 38,246,108 citizens in Canada.
At that rate, it will take 864,802 days for ALL CANADIANS to die of C-19 [38,246,108 ÷ 45 = 864,802]
That's 2,369 years.
[864,802 ÷ 365 = 2,369]
At the current rate, it would take 2,369 YEARS for C-19 to kill all of the Canadian population.
This isn't my opinion. This isn't a right-wing conspiracy.
THIS IS LONG DIVISION, FFS.
How can I possibly dumb this down any further than that? ??? Lol.
Any suggestions on that, ARMZ?
Honestly, if I made any mistakes in my calculations, or anything like that - I'd be glad to address them.

average life expectancy is 81, anthing elese is a bonus
Where the fuck do you get your stats that someone at at age 84 now is going to possibly live to 92???
Because I said the average person who has died of COVID had only two years left to live, as they are, of average, 79 years old in Canada, and closer to 84 years old in the USA [last I checked].
So OAK is saying "No - the average 84-year-old will actually make it to age 92.
That may be true for the *average* 84-year-old, but the ones dying aren't just in approximately the oldest 5% of the population - they are also among the same percentage as far as being the least healthy!
According to the CDC data released in August of 2020 that The_Coach_! posted, 94% had 2-3 underlying health conditions.
To break that down - for every 10 Americans who died, there were 26 comorbidities, or 2.6 per person, hence why I say "2-3".
According to a press article from the New York Post from July, 40% of Americans who died had diabetes!
EXACTLY WHAT I SAID ABOVE:
THESE ARE FAT CHEESEBURGER EATING PIECES OF SHIT WHO SHOVE HAMBURGERS DOWN THEIR MOUTH AND EAT CHEESEBURGERS.
And OAK isn't talking about THAT when making his "lifespan projections" for 80-year-olds.
OAK is neglecting that the ONLY people dying are both old as fuck, and as fat as fuck.

...........Girls and sons who have not been loved by their fathers seek attention once teens and adults to compensate for what they didn't have originally. Fathers either left them alone, or were distant most of the time and not encouraging them.
Also boys who got picked on by others during childhood and adolescence -often sons without a father figure- try to compensate by lifting weights, to develop muscles and survive in the male world.
They're insecure because they're girly, childish, feminine having been raised by a single mom.
They lift obsessively hoping it will transform them into men, to compensate for their lack of influence from a father figure that was not there. Unfortunately they can get as big as they can it doesn't cure their insecurity and who they truly are, how they grew up being raised by a single mom. They re no as manly as other men whatever they do, and they often have a big lack of masculine presence they dont know how to balance, hence often being borderline homosexuals while trying to get their manhood back through various manly activities (mma, cars, weight lifting etc).
They are often the ones that, in order to get respect from other males will go the steroids route to get even "bigger" attempting to cure their insecurity , but being natural not being "enough", they still feel "too small", insecure, amongst other males. The lack of a father figure also often means they didn't have guidance to continue studies and are often working shitty manual jobs.
"I don't take kindly to disrespect. Not on the internet, not in person, not in a grocery store parking lot, not in line at Walmart, not in a restaurant, not at the beach, not at the dry cleaners...anywhere.
People talk about the 'pussyfication' of America, yet they run their mouths thinking they won't get slapped and get their arm broken in front of their friends.
Spent many years in a place where if you talk slick and say something out of line to somebody, you know that when you say it, you better be ready for what happens. most people here in the 'real world' aren't ready for what could happen...and run their mouths like the world is a make-believe cartoon. Despite wearing nice slacks, polished shoes and a nice shirt, the guy you steal that parking spot from at the grocery store and proceed to flip off, may have just gotten out of prison and will have no problem identifying the bitch in you and proceed to teach you a lesson by taking you down to the ground and kicking out your teeth before you even know what happened.
The guy who's willing to go the furthest, wins. If you're not willing to go all the way, it's best you keep your mouth shut and move on, and make it to the next day."
Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth, upon this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that "all men are created equal"
Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived, and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of it, as a final resting place for those who died here, that the nation might live. This we may, in all propriety do. But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate -- we can not consecrate -- we can not hallow, this ground-- The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have hallowed it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here; while it can never forget what they did here.
It is rather for us, the living, to stand here, we here be dedica-ted to the great task remaining before us -- that, from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they here, gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve these dead shall not have died in vain; that the nation, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people by the people for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
War and Peace, historical novel by Leo Tolstoy, originally published as Voyna i mir in 1865–69. This panoramic study of early 19th-century Russian society, noted for its mastery of realistic detail and variety of psychological analysis, is generally regarded as a masterwork of Russian literature and one of the world’s greatest novels.
Summary
War and Peace begins in the Russian city of St. Petersburg in 1805, as fear of Napoleon’s ongoing war making begins to set in. Most of the characters are introduced at a party, including Pierre Bezukhov, Andrey Bolkonsky, and the Kuragin and Rostov families. Much of the novel focuses on the interactions between the Bezukhovs, Bolkonskys, and the Rostovs. After their introduction, Andrey Bolkonsky and Nikolay Rostov go to the Austrian front under General Kutuzov, a fictional representation of Mikhail Kutuzov, to engage with Napoleon’s troops. Andrey is then injured at the Battle of Austerlitz and presumed dead, until he arrives home to his wife, Lise, who dies during childbirth soon after. Pierre, meanwhile, has married Helene Kuragina. She is unfaithful to him, and Pierre duels with the other man, almost killing him. He soon becomes overwhelmed by his marriage and leaves Helene. He joins the Freemasons, which influences his personal and business fortunes greatly. In the meantime Nikolay has racked up a large amount of gambling debt, which causes the Rostov family to lose most of their fortune. He is encouraged to marry a wealthy heiress, despite promising to marry Sonya, his cousin. Nikolay eventually witnesses the peace between Tsar Alexander I and Napoleon (Treaties of Tilsit, signed in 1807). Andrey soon becomes involved with Natasha Rostov only to be told by his father that he must wait a year before marrying her. After some time away, Andrey discovers that Natasha has been unfaithful. He rejects her, and Pierre consoles her, eventually falling in love with her.

How much do you really know about the stories and the authors of the classics you love, from Jane Eyre to Brave New World?
In 1812 Napoleon invades Russia, forcing Alexander to declare war. Andrey returns to service, and Pierre is driven to believe he must personally assassinate Napoleon. As the French advance, Mary, Andrey’s sister, is forced to leave her house. Nikolay finds her in the streets, and the two reconnect. Pierre, still crazed by his imaginary duty, is apprehended by French forces and witnesses a number of executions, which deeply affect him. During his imprisonment, he befriends Platon Karatev, a wise peasant. He is later freed from the French and promptly falls ill. After recovering, he marries Natasha, and they have four children together. Nikolay weds Mary, and the two enjoy a happy married life.
Historical context
War and Peace is known for its realism, something Tolstoy achieved through intensive research. He visited battlefields, read history books on the Napoleonic Wars, and drew on real historical events to create a novel of living history. Tolstoy had originally planned to write a novel centring on the Decembrists, whose revolution in 1825 against the tsar attempted to end autocratic rule in Russia. The Decembrists failed, however, and those who were spared execution were sent to Siberia. Tolstoy wanted to depict a Decembrist, now old, returning from exile. As Tolstoy wrote and revised, however, the novel evolved into the War and Peace known today—a novel that takes place more than a decade before the Decembrist movement. The novel’s primary historical setting is the French invasion of Russia in 1812, which was a turning point in the Napoleonic Wars and a period of patriotic significance to Russia. Some historians argue that this invasion was the event that metamorphosed into the Decembrist movement years later.

Many of the family names used in War and Peace are slight alterations of real names Tolstoy had encountered in his life—a deliberate strategy intended to make the novel feel familiar to the Russians who read it. Bolkonsky, for example, is a manipulated version of Tolstoy’s mother’s family name, Volkonsky. Tolstoy also created the majority of his characters with his own family members in mind; for example, his sister-in-law, Tanya, was the inspiration behind Natasha. Tolstoy’s firsthand knowledge of war likewise influenced War and Peace. When he was 26 years old, he fought in the Crimean War, which he also wrote about in three sketches describing, graphically, his experiences during the Siege of Sevastopol (published 1855–56).
Writing War and Peace
Tolstoy wrote War and Peace over the course of six years. The novel was originally serialized by the Russian periodical Russkiy Vestnik under the title 1805 starting in 1865, but its somewhat indifferent reception and Tolstoy’s compulsion to revise spurred him and his wife, Sofya, to decide to stop the serialization and instead focus on publishing the novel in volumes. Tolstoy continued to write, and he also hired the prominent artist Mikhail Bashilov to illustrate the novel. By 1868 three volumes had been released and were selling rapidly. Tolstoy finished three more volumes between 1868 and 1869. Sofya had copied several drafts, all by hand. All told, War and Peace filled more than 1,200 pages when first published.

So STFU.

Fuck.
The main reason Canada’s COVID numbers are so low (relative to other countries) is because of our strong vaccine mandate.
