Ron Lyle vs Ernie Shavers, or Lyle vs Forman...just throwing bombs... heavyweight boxing was nuts in 70s
Greatest era in boxing IMO.
Any FRI night or SAT afternoon on ABC Sports you could see an amazing fight.
Yes, the Pryor/Arguello fight was epic, with controversy. (Panama Lewis: "Not that bottle, the one I mixed.").
Of course the Billy Collins/Resto fight controversy as well. (Panama was a kvnt). (Casts under his gloves).

Cave man lee
As of a few years ago Caveman was a panhandler in Detroit. Working for pennies at a liquor store. I don't think he was actually employed there but hung out there hoping to collect enough change to buy a beer or a bottle of liquor.
I recognized him and started bullshiting with him about all the old school Kronk fighters. Caveman got a little emotional and called Manny Steward on the spot. Handed the phone to me. And Im talking to Manny. Manny tells me that he takes care of Caveman from time to time. And asks me if it looks like Caveman needs anything and what kind of mental condition he was in. I said well hed probably like a nice dinner and a good bottle of liquor. Manny said 'OK. Ill stop by in a little bit.'
It was odd. Caveman was not only punch drunk but also actually drunk and for a few minutes i was his interpreter for Manny Steward.

Oscar Bonavena he was quite a character

Ringi.
So many good Argentine boxers.
-
Oscar Bonavena he was quite a character
helluva fight with Ali
-
Biggest robbery I’ve seen was Foreman’s last fight.
Shows how bad Briggs actually was to in honesty lose to a guy way past his prime.

Pretty fucking awesome story, thanks.

yes it was. I watched it and didn’t know who Bonavena was at the time but his toughness in that fight I have remembered all my life.

Foreman's comeback was one of the more impressive things I've seen. Some guys hang on too long and others surprise you with how they still have it and aren't punch drunk.

Great story and a typically sad one for some of these guys.

If you`ve never seen Augutus fight watch his fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. and his fight with Mickey Ward just to name two of his many great bouts....one tough bastard that never got his just due then while later in life living in squalor with his wife one wintry night after still training coming home from the gym on a bus and never bothering a soul some fucker shot him in the head.
Would fight on a minutes notice three or four times in as many weeks... his record looks terrible because of this but never had cash or a great team behind him he fought to feed himself and his family and never ducked a fight and was one tough and honorable dude in the ring....a very clean fighter almost to a fault.....my advice, watch as many of his fights on YT that you can and be inspired.
If it sounds like I admire the guy.....I do..........NO HOMO.

yes it was. I watched it and didn’t know who Bonavena was at the time but his toughness in that fight I have remembered all my life.
Reminded me of Jake LaMotta, just non stop attacking

And many were terrified of him before they stepped in the ring to fight him.

Talk about a gifted athlete. In his younger years he was totally untouchable. Perfectly proportioned for a boxer. Lightning quick reflexes. Light on his feet. Before his exile he scored plenty of knockouts. And maybe one of the best chins in HW history- other than George Chuvalo.

Guy took too many heavy shots 15 round heavyweight fights are brutal he should have retired earlier

Beyond horrid:
-
I loved Tuesday night fights (Al Albert, Sean O'Grady) never missed an episode.
Some classics came out of that era.
Loved the old Haugen vs. Paz fights also...
Many of Foremans early comeback fights were on that channel /show.

Beyond horrid:
Is Bob Sapp the trainer?
-
Boxing was probably my first love. It was an obsession for me when I was young and I'd have to get the bus an hour each way to train every night, then hang around outside for around two hours after every training session until the last bus home.
Guys like Sonny Liston, Nigel Benn, Tyson, Julian Jackson and Pernell Whitaker were my heroes then and all I wanted to do was take heads off. I was knocking pretty much everyone out cold in the amateurs and had a professional career offered.
Ultimately, I turned it down due to recurring injuries/headaches and the fact that I hated the idea of fame. All the stupid nicknames and gimmicky things they'd want you to do - there's no way I'd do it, and I'd have been so outspoken back then that I knew I'd end up with half the country hating me, lol. I didn't want the respect of the crowd and saw no point in damaging my brain once I realised how little I'd make. I still love to hit the bag and watch the big fights, though.

I still miss Tuesday Night Fights on the USA network. Larry Holmes and Roy Jones were also featured on that series as well. Can't believe PBC or Fox hasn't tried to pick up Sean and Al to cover their fights. Would be a huge upgrade to their current teams.
-
Boxing on Telemundo from the Felt Forum in Englewood.
Also had a lot of good fighters Chiquita Gonzalez, Daniel Zaragoza, Michael Carbajal and one of the most underrated fighters Ricardo Lopez.

That was bad but in my opinion not as bad as James Toney's win over Dave Tiberi and Lennox getting a draw vs Holyfield in their 1st fight. I had Lennox winning 11 rounds to 1. If I bent over backwards and then some it was 9-3.

I used to love watching Carbajal...."Little Hands Of Stone".....a true living legend.

Yup, Holmes making his comeback, his fights were showcased.
Cant believe how long ago now it actually was.
Who can forget ring announcer "Ed Derian.... Derian"... :)

Haha, David Diamante does that repetition of the names now, too. It's a nod to the old days before loudspeakers, when the announcer would turn to a different corner of the room and repeat himself. He looks like an anthropomorphic rat but I love the respect he has for the sport.

:D
The epitome of "all drugs".
And yet, most normal dudes are still searching for the fountain of youth.

I used to love watching Carbajal...."Little Hands Of Stone".....a true living legend.
In his prime I remember watching his fight with the thai champ Kittakasem on ABC on a saturday afternoon.carbajal won that fight by k.o. Even though it was something of a blowout it was a very exciting fight. Carbajal was just a hair faster, stronger and more accurate.
I also remember watching his come from behind knockout of Chiquita Gonzalez. I think that one may have been on Pay Per View.
But his most memorable fight was his very last fight. He fought a very young Jorge Arce. And Arce beat the crap out of Carbajal for 10 and a half rounds. Then Carbajal starched Arce in the 11th. I don't think Carbajal won a single round but he changed that whole fight with one punch. He won the wbo title and retired... Arce was an absolute animal who went on to win a few championships.
On a sadder note. I just found out that Michael's brother, Danny, who trained Mike and was always in Mikes corner, swindled Mike out of most of the money he won in the ring.

I remember seeing both the Gonzalez and Arce fight.....real wars.
Nice of Danny to be a prick like that....it`s bad when you are supposed to be close to your brother/trainer and he ends up screwing you.

Back in the spring of 82 I hurt my hand at work and had to have some surgery to reattach part of a finger. I had to go to a hand specialist here in Dallas every week for a couple of months. One day signing in I saw the name over mine was Salvador Sánchez and I asked the girl if that was the boxer. She said yeah he flies in from Mexico almost every week to see the doc.She asks me “is he a big deal?” I said yeah he is real good I think he’s going to be one of the greats. After saying he was kind of small she told you will probably see him since he’s there a lot.Sadly he was killed in a wreck shortly after that and I never got to meet him or even see him there.

Wow, cool story Cook.... but a really sad ending.

I was 9 when Sanchez passed. I was already a die hard. I was devastated. Boxing history was altered forever the day he passed.

Interesting to see how Rocky Marciano "the Italian stallion" trained. I'm sure this training was inspiration for the movie Rocky.
The heaviest Marciano ever weighed in for a fight was 192 1/2 lbs.
-
Hagler Hearns.

I have to agree. All power shots and no running. One of the best fights of all time. Another great one is Foreman vs Lyle who just got out of prison. Brutal amount of knock downs. I think Lyle said I'm going to win or die. Shocked he didn't die.

You couldn't beat the guy. You just couldn't. And then you get beat.
