Going in for another cortisone shot in the elbow today. Was thinking I would ask for an XRAY and MRI as well to see how much damage is being done? Anyone else have any exp with cortisone shots for golfers elbow (outside of elbow pain) has anyone gotten any surgical corrections or had PRP? Anyone else doing cortisone every couple months?

Cortisone weakens connective tissues which is why it's only administered very infrequently.
Getting a shot every few months is not wise.
Figure out what is irritating your elbow and make adjustments.
Most likely it's some tricep exercise like pushdowns or lying tricep extensions/skullcrushers.
If that's what is irritating then drop those exercises and get your tricep work from pressing.

Usually, high doses of Winny/Halo tend to dry out the joints.

Laying off shit for just a few days won't correct it. You most likely will have some tendonosis in there. Xray really isn't indicated for soft tissue injuries. Unless it is due to a trauma, getting an MRI wouldn't be indicated either. Treat conservatively with rehab and some anti-inflammatory.
Then again....you know all this and have read Tarpada's paper on it being that you have read every research article for the last 25 years. Medial epicondylalgia is often the result of overuse of the flexors. Again, you know this already.

I think getting those shots too frequently can damage your cartilage. You're probably better off figuring out which activity/motion is causing the pain and stopping that. It's probably skull crushers or some tricep exercise. Give it a few weeks off, not a few days off.

Overcoming natural limitations doesn't mean mindlessly redlining until the wheels fall off. It's a plodding, conscious exploration. Fix where you break. Don't just wallpaper over it.

I say get a second and third opinion on long term regular corticosteroid use before you conclude that misgivings are nothing but an urban myth.

You do realize a doctors job is to keep you sick/injured so you continue to use his services, they'll never tell you how to heal and or get down to the root cause of the problem and fix it. Getting a cortisone shot is literally putting a bandaid on a situation like all other medications.

and in that two weeks what did you do to rehab it? In that two weeks did you do things that involved that elbow (i.e. repetitive motion type of things)....throwing ball with your kid...etc. If so, thats not gonna do much to heal.
My disdain for you is high....but what irks me more is when I see people getting shitty advice as well as having unnecessary diagnostic procedures done. As I said...what the fuck would have changed if you did have a spur? Nothing! If you had a serious loss of ROM, then by all means xray that shit. If not...all it did was line the pockets of the clinic.

No you specifically asked if anyone had experience with shots, surgery, or PRP. What was said was not 'heresy' [sic]. I have quite a bit of experience in the treatment of it.
1) PRP is shoddy at best. If it is an acute case (which yours isn't) it would be more indicated and beneficial
2) Stem Cell might be an option but you typically are not allowed to do anything training with a joint that had stem cell for 6 weeks or so. Then, you have to resume loading on a limited basis.
3) You wanted more info on cortisone injections. You have never once mentioned you tried rehab. You have complained about it in the past and only have taken off for a few days. This will NOT heal it. it will less painful but the tendon is far from healed.
Most tendonitis is misdiagnosed and you actually have tendonosis. By not allowing your tissue (tendon) to fully heal you are causing a change over from healthy collagen type I into immature type II and III. You also will have a loss of collagen continuity (i.e. collagen fibers no longer aligning with one another). This in and of itself results in loss of linkage between the fibers and the load bearing that you do will further cause damage to the tendon. If they looked at your tendons they would not appear white but instead more brown. They also wouldn't be firm but rather soft and dull.
The overall result of this will be a loss of tendon strength and increase in the bulk of the tendon. Both of which contribute highly to the cycle of injury (look up cumulative injury cycle for a better understanding). What's more interesting is in a recent seminar there was connections to tennis elbow and the development of carpal tunnel syndrome.
Laying off the dominating movements (in your case gripping exercises) are needed. It can take 6 - 8 weeks to see complete resolution of things. Dry needling, IASTM, the RIGHT rehab movements and increasing vitamin C actually are some of the best things I have seen for people with these kind of problems. Kinesiotape is hit or miss. I have had people with rotator issues come to me after being at PT for 4 weeks with little relief and in a week they are 50% better.

The study doesnt mention how many shots were given but it says injection so it sounds like one single shot then wait a year and see if improved with or without. Hardly seems like a thorough enough study to draw their conclusion. Also therapy lol I will absolutely atrophy more from quitting lifting and just doing therapy than I will benefit from so called therapy. The cortisone is only supposed to be an anti imflammatory taking one anti inflammatory then testing a year later isnt going to do a damn thing. But if it reduces pain and allows you to continue to train vs doing some therapy bullshit then yes you may recover much better and not atrophy at all. Also this is general population not weight lifters.
The goal is not to cure all pain forever but to reach an acceptable level to train now I can't just keep taking weeks off because my elbow is sore I am always going to be sore I just want to make sure it isn't going to rupture isn't getting worse and get back to it.
These people were told to avoid anythign for 2 weeks then slowly get back to exercise wtf I am taking the weekend off because I have my son this weekend and already trained and I know from previous it is sore for about 2 days after shot. Come Monday the weights die

Your Georgetown doc hasn't rehabbed patients....just an FYI there. He'll give you a 10 min exam, a shot, maybe a script for some nsaids and you'll be on your way.

Rehab is nonsense for someone like me I am not an 80 year old man with a weakness that needs to be rehabbed. Rehabbing someone is not the same as having done it yourself. Have you personally had cortisone in your elbow? Have you personally tried PRP Stem Cells or Surgery? The doctor I saw is a Ortho not an Endo. I asked for personal exp as in your fucking elbow not someone else. I never said research isn't valid but most studies are extremely flawed the 2 you provided are flawed as flawed can be and provide no actual good information it is impossible to draw any conclusion from them much less the ones they claim. The cortisone is supposed to be a band aid and I wanted to see if I had a bigger issue and how quickly it may be progressing my DR reassured me it wasn't going to rupture and the cortisone wouldnt cause atrophying of the surrounding tissue. He reassured me not to worry about that as we were not doing it that often he then told me about a local well known athlete doing it for years without issue. I use to do a lot of skull crushers. Hell I treated it like a powerlift. I did them for years adding weight then eventually I was spending so much time rubbing my elbows between sets from the pain I reluctantly gave them up.After just a few weeks my elbow pain went away and is still pretty good years later. I do other tricep exercises including dips and close grip benches so I can still hit them with heavy weights

For fuck sake I do exactly what my orthopedic Dr recommends and I still get attacked for it crazy. He didn't say I needed to take weeks off. He didnt say start eating no gmo organic predigested poop.
