Dumbells can sure roll sometimes. Maybe that person did not mean to do that but sure sounds like a case of ignorance and nothing excuses negligence when the result is what has happened to your pinky. Could you sue? The dude? The gym? The girl behind the counter? etc etc.
Seriously that sounds like a really bad Monday.
I remember doing 45 incline leg press many years back and I had a big guy spotting me for the last rep or two and to rack the sled.
Unfortunately for him I kinda lost control of the weight right when he was helping get the sled onto the supports and crushed the end of his thumb. He didn't say a word - just kinda glared at me and I watched as his entire thumbnail came off and all this blood oozed out.
I know it must of hurt like hell but believe me I felt pretty bad bout the hole episode. For weeks after that I was asking him if he was o.k. but he was pretty cool. about it which of course made me feel worse.
Selfish bastard.  ;D

if its just the tip of your thumb there should be no reason why you physically cant do all the upperbody exercises....the pain of the blood rushing to the injury will be another story, however...

sorry to hear that bro. I had my share of bad luck yesterday too!!!
After being without trainning for 2 weeks, because i injured myself on dead-lifts and f*cked my ciatic (sp?) nerve (i still feel my back, i will have to find a chiropratic doctor...), i got back on the gym yesterday to train chest...
The workout was good, i even break some personal records on 2 exercises, and on the end i decided to train calfs...
Doing calfs on the leg-press machine, on the last set i forgot that i didnt locked the machine, so when my leg was going down to finish the exercise, the lock was off and i almost got crushed on the machine, LOL
Well, the machine has a safety lock, but i think that because of the extreme angle that my knees where put, now my left knee is hurting ,  :'( (so i cant train legs today, as i was planning)
One more injury for the collection...just one of those days that you make stupid things and pay the price for it...

Perhaps you should not drop the dumbbells to the floor and instead control the weight when needing to put it down. Dropping D-bells does cause them to loosen and obviously increasing your risk of an injury.

Ouch.  Freaking ouch.

Don't flame me for this, but why do people have to drop the DBs?  I'm no beast, but I use the 150s on flat press and 125s on incline and don't have to drop them.  Again, I'm not busting your chops, but if you can press them, I'm sure you can set them down.

Damn, I just realized what a peckerhead I sound like.  meh.

Just be careful when you put them down, and check if there's anything on the floor nearby.

Since we're sort of on the topic of injuries, I almost injured my back doing Good Mornings (of all things?). The weight was one of the heaviest I've done, and I must have lost concentration for a split sec or simply couldn't get the form needed for that weight, which caused my back to round and thus sent a pain through it. Went away after a few days, but that could have ended any hopes of getting a better body. Just have to be careful 100% of the time.

lol Alexxx goes up to the 125s incline dumbell press. I even droped a 100 pound dumbell on my toe a couple of times and it is fine. Once I dropped a 5 pound plate on my toe and my nail turned blue.

That sucks, but I can only say it could be worse:  I knew a guy in Texas who was doing dumbell side lateral raises and was swinging and cheating at the end of his set... well lo and behold he comes down on one rep and pinches his schlong between the dumbells!  BAM!!   He crawled to the lockerroom, worried that he killed it!!  So in retrospect, a broken finger wouldn't be as bad as a broken wong.l

Once I went to put down the 140s and I didn't realize I left my left nut unprotected on the floor. CRACK!! Now the doctor says I'll never have moron children. Send donations to Children's Hospital of Orange County in care of the Shawn Ray Foundation to support Morons who have been Injured in the Gym (MIG).

If you checked the organ box on your driver's license, does that mean someone else will get your finger?

Someone at your (non)advanced level shouldn't be doing singles.  Besides, are you a powerlifter?  You should drop the weight to something you can get for 8-12 reps.  Once you have built some meat on those upper pecs, then worry about adding some weight.

There is a guy at our gym.  He moved here from LA.  He is competing in the only National Qualifer we have here in July.  He is about 6'0" and weighs right now about 220-230.  He is a good size guy.  Very white so he sticks out here.  He has very good arms and delts.  A medium chest, no back at all and okay legs nothig special and great abs.  Wheh he first moved here everyone noticed his calves.  They were ridiculas looking.  So fake everyone noticed.  Well lately they have gone down in size about 2 inches.  Well starting on Monday he has had bandaids on each calf.  Today he had none.  Well he should have left them on cause you could see the site injection and each hold was dripping blood.  He finally found out and left the gym.  It was pretty funny.

Was he using synthol? It's always embarrassing when people resort to that. :-\

If people can learn how to eat with their feet after loosing their arms, surely, Candidate will have no problem spanking the monkey with his left hand. 8)

When I was 16 I would have been able to spank it with my feet if need be...LOL

I hope you heal from your injury quickly.  I'm no doctor but it might set you back 5 to 6 weeks while the bones heals.  Then it will be a fight to get back to where you were.  Just keep a positive mind frame.  It could be a good time to go cardio crazy for awhile.  If you can grip  with your injured hand do what you can.  Train lower body and do cardio.  You will be back and I know it really is hard to take.

Three months ago I ripped my bicep off the bone at it's insertion.  The bicep shot up to the delt. It also effected the tricep and delt some how.  When I came out of surgery I was walking fast on the treadmill 2 days after the operation.  After the cast came off and I was given a green light I started lifting super light.  I had no grip strength in the affected arm.  I started benching a 45 pound bar and curling a 2.5 pound weight.  It a slow road for some injuries.  I'm using 225 for benching and curling 75lbs now.  Considering the severity of the injury I count my blessings.  In July I hope to be back to real weights.  Take your time coming back.  Know when to push it and when to back off.

Good grief!!...In no way is Mighty Mouse's smashed finger anywhere near the severity of your injury.....I get chills thinking about my bicep tearing off the bone...OUCH....but he smashed his finger cause he was acting like a boob by dropping the dumbells...That is a pet peeve of mine I hate it when jackasses do that...I  had a dumbell bounce into my shin before cause some kid dropped em like he did....If you ask me he deserves what he got.

You should not be dropping the dumbells. Lots of bad things can happen when you do that. It is also annoying to others in the gym.  Learn to kick yourself back up and set the dumbells on top of your thighs, then re-rack them.

Should I drop the barball on the floor after I complete a set of barbell curls ?

Use a lighter weight if you need to..

Is your gym going to replace the 15-pounders you blood-spattered? Do you have to pay?

I was at the gym the other night and this douche next to me was on the decline benching the 45s and after each set was throwing them on the ground.  After one of his sets a dumbell he threw down started to roll toward me and he had to hurry up and grab it because I was looking at it like I was annoyed, which I was.  I just don't see why people think they have to drop the weights on the ground, because it does break them.  I could maybe understand if someone was using 100# plus, but not 45.
