Prof Isabel Oliver said last year's heatwaves saw more than 1,600 excess deaths - and 2021 temperatures were not "anywhere near" next week's forecast.
Anybody can be affected, she said.
"It's important to know in these exceptionally high temperatures everybody can be affected," she said - "although of course the most vulnerable remain those in older age groups and with those long-term conditions."
Downing Street has said it will hold talks over the weekend, with a meeting of the Cobra emergency committee to take place on Saturday afternoon.
The Met Office red warning - the highest level - is for extreme heat and covers an area including London, Manchester and York on Monday and Tuesday. It is the first time it has been issued since the warning system started last year. It means:
there is a danger to life and risk of serious illness, not just among the most vulnerable
substantial changes in working practices and daily routines are needed
a risk of power loss to water or mobile phone services
increased risk of water safety incidents
delays to road, rail and air travel
Rail passengers in England and Wales have been warned they should only travel if necessary during next week's heatwave, Network Rail said speed restrictions are likely,
Some schools will close early next week and some hospital appointments will be cancelled.
The rest of England, Wales and southern Scotland will be under an amber warning for extreme heat - while in Europe, deadly wildfires have broken out in Portugal, Spain and southwestern France.
As well as the Met Office warning, the UKHSA issued its highest level four heat alert to health and care bodies - warning illness and death could occur "among the fit and healthy".
Asked whether thousands of people could die in the hot weather - as some newspapers have reported - its chief scientific officer Prof Oliver declined to suggest a figure.
"It is very difficult to predict but I can tell you that we monitor this very closely and we assess it," she told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.
"Last year we didn't reach temperatures anywhere near the ones that are predicted for next week, [and] we saw over 1,600 excess deaths associated with the period of heatwave. So this is why we are keen that everybody knows what they can do to stay safe."
Stay cool UK getbiggers! Normal temps for london this time of year are in the mid-20Cs :o

I know plenty of people looking forward to the next few days.
They don't seem to understand though that they aren't on holiday, where they can cool off in a pool or retreat to an air conditioned hotel room. Half these people can't even get cross breeze going in their flat.
Darwinism will be taking out several 100 people over the next few days.

The issue is that Europe is totally unprepared for this heat. It’s normally in the 70s F in London this time of year, and the previous record in UK was 38.7C from 3 years ago and that’s looking to be broken in the next couple days. The buildings and homes just aren’t built for it.
That cold snap that crippled Texas wouldn’t have registered up North, but since Texas never encounters those temperatures they were unable to deal w it and hundreds lost their lives.

Wasn't Bill Gates planning to block the sun? If so, when's he gonna do that?

About 15,000 French died from the heatwave of 2003, but that was almost last century, so we can forgive them for forgetting about it. ::)

I lived in Phoenix 10 years. 100F (38C) was actually pretty comfortable. 115 F was brutal but you just stayed inside. I'm now in South Carolina and 95 F at 50% humidity isn't that bad any more. It's all about adapting.

They've had a thousand years as a culture to get ready for it. Big fucking deal. It seems people have become snowflakes over every damn thing these days. I've lived in northern NY, central Arizona, and the deep south and haven't died yet.

UK people escape from the mild weather to hot countries, but then shit their pants when the hot weather comes home.
They'd probably complain about some footballer on the england team being transphobic if the world cup ever comes home.

I see them Mexicans on them roofs in this shit and wonder how in the Hell they do it.
The majority of real Mexican's have never had air conditioning. They have those swamp coolers at best.
It wasn't until recently that air conditioning became common in most of the Country.
Most of the infrastructure can't handle the loads generated by true AC and it's expensive.
I see them in the Chihuahua desert when it's 105F, driving around in cars with no AC, windows down.
My GF's sisters house was built 5 years ago, only has a swamp cooler. On a 100F day that house gets down to maybe 80-82. So they open the windows. The only person struggling with the heat is me, the gringo. ;D
They are used to living like this, only the rich people and tourist locations have AC.
Some people are starting to buy those split AC systems and install them in houses, but most of the population is too poor to afford them or their electrical system can't handle it.

That is brutal. I am 63 years old so I remember not having ac in our house or car but I don’t want to go back to that.
-
Amongst English's more peculiar idioms is "Cool as a cucumber." Cucumbers grow in the summer, directly on the ground, which is even warmer than the air.
Subterranean foods are insulated from summer heat. Upon seeing someone negotiate a trying situation with great aplomb, you can remark "That fellow is as cool as a potato."
Should you require alliterative appeal to win your audience's adulation, "Cool as a carrot" is sure to show those in the know that you've the info where various vegetables grow.
Carry on sweltering.

My grandparents' house in central Texas didn't have AC, it was built in the 1930's. I remember as a kid it was insanely hot during the day, but at night it was alright because we had big fans.
Growing up in SE Texas on the coast with all the humidity, i would have probably died without AC. ;D

Back on topic, Portugal & Spain got rocked over the weekend :o
More than 1,000 deaths have been attributed to the nearly week-long heatwave in Portugal and Spain so far. Temperatures in Spain have reached as high as 45.7C (114F).

I've been saying this for years.
We are going to run out of fresh water WAY before anything else causes a worldwide panic.
It's already estimated at current population growth that parts of the world will be out of fresh water within 30-40 years.
It's odd nobody is talking about it at a high level.
Probably not enough money in it.
-
Lol, gayer than the metric system.
In the entire world, there are only 3 countries that don't use the metric system - USA, Myanmar and Liberia.
Hope this helps.

So, people die from dehydration or their bodies simple can't take the heat? I would search the internets for the answer but I would rather have a fellow getbigger explain thoroughly.

I remember in the mid 90s having to wade through snow to get to primary school lol.
Nowadays the schools see the next day's forecast and shit their pants.
-
Lol, gayer than the metric system.
I've worked in both and metric is better on a building site. Its just faster. I can see logic in Imperial for machining.
Plumbing in metric Commonwealth countries continues to be BSP British Standard Pipe measured in TPI. I wouldn't be surprised if it's in use all over Asia as well.
I think the only metric pipe thread I ever met was called a UNO on a hydraulic fitting.
Snow days were the best. Listening to the radio waiting to hear them say Montgomery.

Yea i think 1990 was really bad for snow, literally waist deep and we trudged to school, fun it was too.

Many Brits travel to Portugal to experience those temperatures and beyond.
I believe you will be ok. Crops will get a nice boost from that.

Back on topic, Portugal & Spain got rocked over the weekend :o
Yeah death counts and causes of death have never been misrepresented to push an agenda. I can’t think of a single recent example ::)
It was 101 in Los Angeles yesterday, basically had to fight for my life to avoid succumbing to a fatal case of sticky nutsack.

There are solutions.
Just don't be shocked when a gallon of drinking water is $50 or more.
And areas in poverty will not have water at all.
At one of the Uni's here, they are working on recycling water on a large scale.

Here in Tx it’s been horrible this year. 55 of the last 60 days have been over 100f and 14 were over 105f. Twice we’ve seen 111f. I live in the brazos valley so humidity runs high even though we’re in a drought. I work in utilities so I’m outside all day, if it weren’t for pedialyte I’d be fucked. My electrolytes stay screwed up even with the pedialyte. Cantaloupe and watermelon seem to help a lot but regardless all my lifts are drastically down and my workouts are shit. Any advice?

I work construction so I can sympathize.. even though I’m up in the Midwest where temps are more moderate. I don’t even bother lifting on workdays, even if I did get a good performance in, the resulting next day soreness would make work suck. The heat and the workload keeps me lean, and all the sweating makes me look extra defined 8)
Lite salt is a combination of potasssium chloride and sodium chloride, the same electrolytes as in sports drinks. Adding a couple shakes of this to pedialyte or sports drinks boosts the hydrating qualities of them. Stay safe and stay strong sir.

Hi Henda ! 🙋♀️
That is good news about your heart, but you need to go see a Urologist. Ten years on testosterone without any type of testing is going to really increase the probability that you have prostate issues.
I’m out on my patio typing this over morning coffee. I’m at the house I sent you the photos of. I still have a loose patio stone if you ever get the urge to leave the north of England. I’m headed back home Friday - I have some new training videos to send you. We had a birthday party for the dog last Saturday and he had about 10 of his buddies come over and play in the backyard all day. I got him a cake that looks like a Schnauzer !

Hi Jane I will do I was supposed to mention it during my endocrinologist appointment after you told me to but he was more concerned with my high potassium low salt issue he actually was slightly surprised I was still alive when I walked in his room after I discharged myself 5 days before with the issue still present haha. Despite feeling great still have fucked left ventricle and blood clot in heart and one in aorta so will find out when finally see cardiologist what’s happening with that. Just pleased to be back at work and gym doing fuck all every day for 3 weeks was torture.
I’d love to come over and fix it not sure if I’m allowed into USA while the current faggot administration is in charge being unvaxxed maybe if I fly to Mexico first and cross the border as being quarter spic and black as fuck at minute could definitely pass as a stinking immigrant. Can’t wait to see the trading vids and love the sound of birthday party for the dogs that would be great haha

The prophecy has been fulfilled :o
The UK has recorded temperatures of over 40C (104F) for the first time.
Thermometers hit 40.3C (104.5C) at Coningsby in Lincolnshire,, one of 34 locations to surpass the previous high of 38.7C - set in July 2019.
