Title: Hand Grippers
Post by: JackTheRipper on July 18, 2022, 04:38:20 AM
The mark of a man was a strong hand shake back in the day.. iīve never really bothered training grip strength directly rather going on the theory it will all get worked when gripping bars..etc.
Now recently i started using a cheap gripper, itīs not a captain crush or anything wild like that, however i really feel it after a few sets to failure.
Thoughts ??

Ive always loved grip training. I have all the grippers and got up to closing a number 3 CoC. (Captains of Crush). (Just with my right).
Thick bar or thick-bell training as well. I have a "baby Inch" Thomas Inch bell. Took a while but I got it with both hands.

I have a wrist-roller setup (Where it doesnt need to be held up by the person) so it saves delt fatigue to just focus on the grip/roller.
I have some other gadgets as well (Axle bars, pinch grip blocks, rolling-thunder handle, etc).

Lots of fun and a break from normal PL or BB type training...

People with these spring grippers think they are getting stronger but what they don't realize that the spring gets looser over use and gets easier.

A strong grip is awesome.

I've been working on my pinch grip for awhile and hope to get two 45s soon.

Not really.
When something is enjoyable, its fun time (and not a waste)...
Some of the strongest people in history have brutal grips from training it.
Dinnie stones, Inch-Bell, etc. Most BB's cant get a real Inch-Bell off the ground.

For grip, at the moment all I do are finger-tip push ups.

For pinch-grip I used to hold 20kg plates and then see how long I can hold them.

Also did plate curls, like wrist curls but you hold the plate with outstretched fingers.

If you have spent any kind of time in the gym lifting weights you should have a strong grip and forearms thinking that using a hand squezzer is going to somehow increase my grip strenght and forearm development at this point is nonsense and hence a waste of time. But yes if you have 12 inch forearms carry on

They definitely cant hurt, throwing in some extra work.
Ill take mine with me at the end of most workouts, I'll do 4 sets of seated calves (rotary) with the gripper super-setted while on that machine.
Or when doing cardio on a treadmill (rare in the nice weather months) but I'll do them while on the treadmill. Takes away some of that boredom for me...

Hand grippers are a fluff exercise and a waste of time.

You could hurt yourself.

Just do front or back squats and an occasional fingertip pushup.

Grippers are not "fluff" for those who like Strength. Some of the greats are grip-legends.
Magnus Samuelson, Shaw, David Horne, Joe Kinney, etc.

Those who are into pure and total Strength (not just BB) know all about the Grip Board, and all the freaky strong people out there who are grip-strength lovers.

Its just another tool, when used properly, one can benefit.
Like all the tools, thick-bars, rolling thunder, pinch-grip, etc, etc...

Its just another form of competition, etc.
Ive seen some amazing things (in person) watching Slim 'Hammerman' Farman (ROP), Dennis Rogers, Greg Matonik (RIP), Mark Henry w/ the Inch-Bell, John Wood, Pat "Human Vise" Pavolitis, and many more at the old NJ Strongman dinners. Good old days...

I find my gripper actually quite therapeutic as i had an injury which affected my hands, grip strength.
I mean look at some of these strong guys pinch gripping plates & such. I will definetly have to buy a captain crush one though as my grip is coming on fast. Now i just donīt do full reps but try to keep tension on my hand/forearms all the time & doing static holds in the closed position.
Maybe it will turn into an obsession in my desire to have popeye forearms & crushing power.  :D

I have done a 1K deadlift lockout without straps and guys say I have one hell of a grip. Never missed a deadlift due to grip ever. But I can barely close a #2 CoC and no way could I EVER close a #3. It must have a lot to do with how your hand is built genetically.

there are many facets of hand strength, hand grippers are but one.

If you want to improve your grip strength on barbell exercises why would you train w hand grippers?  Totally different movements and muscles involved.

you likely could if you trained for it, but who gives a shit if you can close the COC grippers.  That's about as niche a feat of strength as there is, and as you mention your grip is strong enough as is.

there are many facets of hand strength, hand grippers are but one.

If you want to improve your grip strength on barbell exercises why would you train w hand grippers?  Totally different movements and muscles involved.
as i wrote i had an injury where it did affect my fingers & grip.  If people have strong grip & donīt need "pussy" straps then OK good for them but most people fail on their grip. Straps have their use but i think training your hands is good too. The hand is quite complicated.
End of the day iīm enjoying it so i will continue.

If you want to improve your grip strength when it comes to holding a barbell or dumbbell, it seems like you'd have more success if you trained your hand while holding a barbell or dumbbell.  Static holds, fat grip work, farmers walks, etc

Training hand grippers seems to only make you stronger at closing hand grippers, that's been my experience.  sorry to hear about your hand.
