was looking through an old flex and DJ says he got into BBing because he was challenged by a friend of his to see who could put on the most size in a period of time. In the first 6 weeks, he says he put on 1kg a day every day. That would be 92lbs in 6 weeks!
True or false? i cant see it myself ::)
-
I can see it happening but you'd spend all your time eating and on the toilet. Ultimately you'd be a fat bloated mess but you could do it. I also wouldn't imagine he did any training during this time since he burn precious calories that could be used for bulking. The thing of it is I doubt Dennis wrote or even read the article so take it with a
bucket grain of salt.
-
it was a 3 page interview with him, and it makes it out as though Dennis was putting on lots of muscle and some fat
-
While 92lbs in 6 weeks is certainly hard to believe, such high weight gain are not unheard of in the bodybuilding world. What happen is that a guy has been dieting hard for 12-16 weeks plus he severely dehydrates himself prior to getting on stage. Diuretic use can lead to loss of 5-10lbs of water and that is somewhat conservative.
So right off the bat we have a dehydrated guy who lost 10lbs of water, cuh weight is easily gained within one or two days of normal eating and drinking. PLUS after diuretic use the body has a tendency to rebound (overcompensate by storing more water than it was prior to diuretic use). A competitor I know gained 35lbs in 7 days after his last show (I was there at the weigh-in and then weighted him myself 7 days after). NOW, keep in mind that some (most) of that is a water rebound. But we must also consider a glycogen surcompensation... if a guy has been dieting strictly using a low-carbs approach it's not unheard of to see large gains in bodyweight simply due to an increased glycogen storage. The normal body can store around 3g of carbs per pound of bodyweight ... so for a 200lbs individual that comes up to 600g (or almost 1.5lbs of carbs). Then understand that to be stored in the muscles, 1g of carbs requires 2.7g of water (we'll round it up to 3g). So our 1.5lbs of stored carbs come up to 6lbs of bodyweight once intramuscular water is factored in. Now, that is under normal circumstances. After a carb depletion period as short as 3 days the body upregulates its capacity to store glycogen by at least 50% (in some extreme cases closer to 100%). So a carb depleted bodybuilder (almost 0g of glycogen in his muscles) could gain up to 12lbs of bodyweight simply by carb-loading. Those who followed a cyclical ketogenic diet (e.g. bodyopus, anabolic diet, etc.) know that it is quite possible to gain 10-15lbs of bodyweight between friday evening (fully carb depleted after 5 days of low-carbs and high volume training) and sunday evening (fully carb loaded after 2 days of a super-high carb intake).
Ok, that was a bit confusing. So let's make this simple. Let's say that DJ (who competes at arounf 260lbs) decides to carb deplete and dehydrate himself for his bet with his friend. Just be depleting his glycogen stores he could loose around 800g (1.7lbs) of carbs plus around 4lbs of intramuscular water weight.
So from 260lbs he is now down to 254lbs.
Then he dehydrate himself with diuretic and a decreased water intake. This could lead to a loss of aroound 10 more lbs.
So from 260 he is now down to 244lbs.
After he weight-in for his bet he goes on consuming a hefty amount of sodium-ladden food (which increase water retention) and as many carbs as he can stomach. It's fair to say that within 3 days his carbs stores will be filled up and surcompensated. So a 9-12lbs gain in bodyweight (the 6lbs he would normally store, plus 50-100% more as surcompensation).
From 244lbs he is now up to 256lbs (+12lbs)
From the water rebound we can expect a 15-20lbs gain easy, especially if a ton of sodium is consumed.
So from 244lbs he is up to 271-276lbs (+27-32lbs).
Now, a man of his weight probably has a metabolic rate that uses up around 2300kcals/day (accordning to the Harris-Benedict formula). Since he is probably active we must factor in his activity level, let' s say moderate (x1.6) ... so his daily caloric expenditure is probably around 3600kcals/day.
There is around 3500kcals in one pound of fat. So by consuming around 7000kcals/day it would not be out of the ordinary to gain close to 1lbs per day... at least for the first 2-3 weeks. Since he is training and using anabolic aids, it's fair to say that the 1lbs/day might be half fat, half muscle.
So over 3 weeks of gross overeating it would be possible to gain 12-15lbs.
So from 244lbs he is up to 283-291lbs (+39-47lbs)
Now, let's say that he decided to use hefty doses of anadrol or dianabol which lead to a rapid fluid retention, an additional 5lbs of water is not unrealistic.
So from 244lbs he is up to 288-296lbs (+44-52lbs)
This is still a long shot away from 90lbs, but it goes to show that nothing is impossible.
-
I saw in flex Dennis Jame's pictures at a competition at 13 years old. I think he is full of shit. Only way he could'a gain that much weight so fast was with steroids. Which he failed to mention.
-
DJ said he had never trained seriously if at all before he took up the challenge. So there was no de-hydration etc. I remember Flex Wheeler saying he used to put on 20lbs within 1-2 days after a show cos he just pigged out on pizzas etc. But if DJ was starting from scratch as a natural, the 92lb gain is impossible IMO
-
In my opinion, even 15 pounds of muscle in the first 6 weeks would be amazing

maybe for the average man.

Under no circumstances did that happen. He obviously didn't mean it literally. ::)

Ah yes, under these circumstances it is impossible.

nop I would say that for a guy with good genetic, even a lean 10 lbs in 6 weeks would be great (natural)

If it takes you 6 weeks to gain 10 pounds then genetics are not an asset for you my friend.
-
so you are saying that in 1 year, you gain more than 90 pound of lean muscle ?
You must have crazy genetic alexxx

it was a bet so dennis obviously did anythin to win the bet fair means or foul ....
.. he got on the scales wearin early 19th century diver's boots... kinda like tom prince does now!

If it takes you 6 weeks to gain 10 pounds then genetics are not an asset for you my friend.
Ronnie Coleman couldn't add 10lbs of new muscle in 6 weeks.
No modern cycle in the world could at this point in time.
Don't underestimate the concurrent fat and water retention.
For a natural bodybuilder, if you add 2-3lbs of pure muscle annually, you are doing quite well.
-
Dennis can look at the food and gain 10 pounds...so I believe it is true...
He can walk by the gym and gain another 10...so I wouldn't doubt that if there was Burger King in Germany right next to some local gym and Dennis went back an forth - he gained whatever number of pounds (kilos) he said he did.
On serious note - I have never seen anyone being able to transform his body as fast as Dennis can (maybe Kevin - but I haven't witnessed it like I did with Dennis).
Also, if anyone can see Dennis train - they would realize where this crazy size comes from...

Nautilus flies and Hammer Strength bench presses? ???

I remember back when I was training pretty hard out and the 'best' bodybuilder (well he was about the only competitive bb at my gym at that time (he competed in the NOC around 1998ish and came 16=)) came back from California with the stories about the pros he had supposedly trained with.
He told me that Dillet just ate Macs and trained like a little girl etc etc.
But he also made this claim that, and I quote, 'it is impossible to put more than a matchbox size of muscle on in less than a month'.
Funny thing was that when he came back from California after being away for about a month he had gained about 30 odd pounds of muscle and his skin had turned almost purple.
So much for the 'matchbox' theory of muscle accumulation. ::)
-
DJ's biggest problem is although he has insane mass, hes always wanting more. Theres not much more hes going to fit on his frame without it making him look very odd. If he came in conditioned to a show he is a clear top tier challenger for any title. OK so maybe he wont win the O but he would be top 3
He, Melvin, RJ, Vic - if these guys all come to the same show spot on then that would be one of the best shows you're ever likely to see
-
For starters, Dennis claimed to bench 500 pounds.................. .
light weight

Milos, I consider you to be a very knowledgable person with regards to all aspects of bodybuilding and respect you as a person but to tell me that Dennis or anyone put on 92 lbs of mostly muscle without anabolics in such a short period of time has as much credibility as Titus' lame excuses for leaving Vegas uttered under the crystal meth buzz that convinced him someone would believe him.

Maybe if your genetics are shit. I usually gain at least 20 pounds per year! Ever since I started training 6 years ago!

You must have pro-level genetics ;D

in my first 6 months of training i gained 60lbs. Now of that, i would say 20-25lbs tops was muscle, i had fat on my stomach and a little on my chest but i was considerably bigger.

Is Dennis James American? He sounds it but then I read that he is from Germany or Thailand or something.

I have a friend whos 6'4", he's 320lbs, lean, It takes forever to fill out a frame like yours, so props.
BTW enough with the whole natural B.S., your only kidding yourself if you think you'll even break top 60 in a national competition, with a 6'4" frame natural. The only people who could pull that off are midgets like me. But if you really wanted you must wonder to the darkside, biotch.

talk about gaining pounds, most of u people won't believe me but i gained 35lbs within 2 months.i was once weighed around 72kgs and i always wanted 2 have that big strong man look.then i started to eat like a wimp and kept on eating and eating...my diet was 6 cheese sandwiches with milk in breakfast, then 6 breads pieces with 4 pieces of chicken in lunch, then 4 breads with 3 eggs post work out with milk and then in my dinner i ate again 6 bread pieces with cooked vegetables with milk.90% of u won't believe this diet but it is true.i ate this much for 2 months straight never missing a day without this diet and i literally stuffed my stomach with food.and the result was i gained 30-35lbs of weight with only 10lbs of muscle.my waist was 38inches and i lost all stamina.my arms got smaller, my ass got wider and was just a big fat slob...in kilograms i was a whooping 87kgs of mostly fat and more fat..then when all the fat was troubling me i decided to reduce.i came down from 87kgs to 70kgs of healthy weight.i did that my dieting to the max and i lost 2kgs per month and lost all that fat in 5 months.i know most of u might b thinking i am just making up a stupid story but its not.in fact i dieted like the pros do.i got rid of the sugar and i did not included sugar in my diet for few months.damn it was so hard to exclude sugar from your diet.i became weak,i always used to have migraines and i always use to feel miserable all the long.after i lost all my extra weight i got back to the normal diet and learned a lesson that ONE SHOULD NOT FORCEFULLY EAT JUST TO GAIN WEIGHT..no way.be normal, eat normal and exercise.
