Californians asked to not charge electric cars — days after gas ban announcement.

Buy electric cars for huge money, but you cannot drive them!!    ::) ::)

once the majority of people have electric cars they can just turn the power off and hey presto everyones on lockdown again.

This is not good news. So far where I live is not one of the areas scheduled to lose power.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Utility companies Portland General Electric and Pacific Power announced Thursday that they could initiate public safety power shutoffs for areas of multiple Western Oregon counties over the next several days due to the threat of high winds and extreme wildfire conditions.

Pacific Power said that a notice went out to roughly 12,500 customers between Linn, Douglas, Lincoln, Tillamook, Marion and Polk counties. The warning applies from early Friday morning through Saturday.

PGE's power shutoffs could impact even more people, an estimated 30,000 customers in 10 areas. The company said it intends to provide up to four hours' notice before shutting off power.

My cousin who lives in Santa Clara, CA posted on Facebook that it was 112° F today
with a photo of her trying to fry an egg on a slate step. Only the yoke cooked. So the saying, 'It's hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk' is bogus.

Some folks have solar panels and generators. A small solar panel array with only 10 solar panels can provide enough power to charge your vehicle's battery.

So now that your car is charged up and ready to drive, where do you go if there's no power? Wouldn't everything be shut down?

Be sure to have a solar array installed on your house if you drive an electric car...for emergencies...like a big earthquake.

You could also run a gasoline generator to charge your EV.  Keep containers of gasoline on hand.

Gasoline doesn't store like it used to, goes bad real quick nowadays.

Yeah, for around $8-10k.

Sounds like a great idea.

Oh, and don't try charging it more than once a week.

Yes, the output of home installed solar panels is not enough to do much at all.

Just make you feel better about yourself.

During the pandemic response there was about $30B (about 10% of the annual budget) in EDD fraud.  No Republican governor would have survived that scandal.  Larry Elder, a black man who ran in the recall, was referred to as the "black face of white supremacy" by the LA Times.

Collectively, we're a bunch of idiots who are fed Leftist pablum by the media.

I may have solar panels installed someday. This is very popular in my neighborhood. Chances are, I won't be buying an electric car anytime soon. My current car has a lot more miles left on it. I only drive a couple thousand miles a year if that. It is 78 months old and has slightly over 30,000 miles. These days, I barely add another 200 miles a month. As for a generator, I am more likely to get solar. Don't need both.

Worse comes to worst, I can hitch a ride in Tesla or someone's electric pickup truck. They are all over the neighborhood.

Don't be negative.

You could hook a generator up to an exercise bike and charge your car that way.

Having solar is one thing. Unless you have a way to store the electricity it generates, you still to buy it from the electric company.

There was a time when $8-10k seemed like a lot of money. It doesn't buy much today. My electric bill runs around $200 a month and the big three major appliances, furnace, hot water and stove are gas. It wouldn't take long to recoup dollars spent for solar panels.

The roof on my house is 3,900 square feet. About half of it which is on the back of the house faces west and south.

Solar isnt a good investment for many, mainly older folks.
After all the calculations, they (installers) told my inlaws it would take 20 years to recoup the costs.
They'll be dead, so not worth it for them to make the investment.

Sometimes install is free (so I hear) and for younger folks it probably makes sense.
Most dont stay in homes long enough to recoup anything though...

My brother who is 70 installed about 30 panels on his lot.

He did a lot of the work himself and bought the panels direct too.

Still cost him about 20k when all is said and done not including a lot of his own labor.

I'm like "Hey man, your 70 with a heart condition...does this make sense?"

If he lives to 90 it'll all work out.

He's an optimist.

There is a strong possibility solar panels add to the value of your home. I read somewhere that the average house with a modest solar panel system increases the home's sales price by about $20,000. That's something, but not much. The average install is around $14,000 less any government rebates which would likely be about $3,500.

As of this year, all new builds in California must include solar panels. There are some exceptions like the property is too shaded or the roof area too small.

I think there will be a lot of hidden expenses. Repairs, panels going bad or burning out, not generating as much electricity as claimed etc. I like the technology and I like the idea of going off the grid and not relying on government enabled monopolies but there will be a huge learning curve with this going mainstream I'd bet.

The roof on my house is 3,900 square feet. About half of it which is on the back of the house faces west and south.

That was the cost for a system to charge a car.

A full system for a large house in the 2500+ SF range is ~$25k.

And you have to buy new panels every 8-10 years, which is almost half the original cost. Battery walls may last 6-8 years, some more than others.

And you can only use the battery power on certain appliances.

And you have to be connected to the grid.

And you can only run your a/c for a few hours a day, if you are lucky.

And hope you get at least 8 hours of direct sun 7 days a week.

They are not economically smart, they are wasted money to make people feel "green".

You will never recoup your money, at best you may break even, up until you have to maintain them. Some people get them to last longer than others. Depends on the weather.

I have the best solar panels on the market with battery wall. Two houses in the desert of New Mexico that get over 300 days of full sun a year.

They will never generate enough to pay for themselves, not until technology advances substantially.

If you don't have air conditioning that changes things. This should be noted.

BUT! The kicker is this, the price for electricity is going to skyrocket soon, and that is when they will be economically viable. When people are paying $500-600 a month for electricity in a 2k SF house, they will make sense.

So there is hope. Also, once every single house in the area has them, it will help provide energy to the others, it will start to balance out. That is what Cali is trying to accomplish. Force them into being used to provide energy at an increased cost. Also, remember Cali has closed down most of it's regional solar arrays because they were too expensive to repair and maintain. So they are doing the smart thing by passing all that onto the consumer. They will also be limiting the amount of energy a house can use in a day/week. This is all coming to Cali soon.

I installed mine because a client of mine wanted to use my houses for testing a new converter and battery wall. If it weren't for that, i wouldn't have bothered.

There will be a day where it's practical, maybe 20-30 years from now. And the government knows this. So they are trying to force them into use by regulation in hopes that it will expedite the advancements in technology. This is pretty common practice. They did this with the car industry and emissions.

Yeah, it all depends on the type of panel, battery wall and converter.

My neighbor had a big system installed a few months ago. Asshole chopped down three big beautiful trees just off my property line. Pissed me off.

The house i actually live in doesn't have the sun coverage for solar. Too much shade. Which is why i love living here.

Fortunately, for anyone interested in knowing the pluses and minuses of them, they've been in commercial use for at least 25 years in Germany when they passed the Erneuerbare Energien Gesetz, or Renewable Energy Sources Act. They are also very big on wind generated power. The countryside is dotted with turbines. What were once crop farms are now wind farms. Parts of the Autobahn are canopied with solar panels.

Or they could listen to the guy who worked for one of the largest energy companies on the planet for 7 years and travelled the world installing solar arrays and wind turbines.

Germany also uses the most fossil fuels in all of Europe.

No doubt this has something to do with Germany being the most populated country in Europe after Russia which is in Europe and Asia Germany is also the richest country in Europe. And Germans love their automobiles as much or more than folks in the U.S. do.
