Get directly from the farms,
..anyone else having trouble finding them? We usually buy in bulk (5-15doz at a time) from either Costco or Sam’s but they’ve been out of stock for the most part. Same with regular grocery stores but when you find them paying a lot? This goes for whites as wellCoach, I think the prices and availability are the same for all races!
We have 8 hens, get about 6 eggs per day. I built a completely enclosed house and run, self watering for the birds to drink and have feeders that I need to fill every 2 weeks or so. It is a very easy hobby with obvious benefits.
Coach, I think the prices and availability are the same for all races!

They are insanely expensive up here.....I get mine from a local farmer.....he gives me 7-8 dozen eggs for 5 bucks.
Finding them is easy. It's PAYING for them that's the problem. For some reason, here in Orlando, eggs are $3.50 (or more) a dozen.
I went to a store and got brown eggs which were (at the time) cheaper than white eggs. But, even those were $2.60/dozen.
Keep in mind that, less than 3 years ago, a dozen eggs were $0.85.
Eggcellent price! Sorry...I was possessed by Vincent Price playing "Egghead" on the Batman TV Show.'LOL ;D

A year and a half ago 18 large eggs cost as little as $2.79 here in Temecula, CA – sometimes buy two get one free.
Now they’re $7.29. Sometime most eggs are out of stock.

Moontrane you ever work out at the MetroFlex in Murrieta- I keep meaning to stop in there and still haven't.
Mcway Orlando is a good sized city but it’s not Southern California. As Coach literally said there are markets/stores out here that don’t have eggs in stock. I’m sure some of it had to do with the holidays, but even if they do have eggs available it’s a very limited supply. You’re not choosing between different sizes or brands, it’s only the what’s available.
And for perspective a dozen eggs at the grocery store out here is $5.99 (they are somewhat cheaper at Walmart or Target, if in stock, but it’s not like visiting either of those stores in Orlando, far less stock available).
$6-9 here. Tbh I don't think it's unreasonable. How can you house & feed birds, collect & inspect eggs, transport, stock, refrigerate, etc, for under ten cents an egg? You must have fed that bird fucking sawdust, and while the product appears to be an egg there's nothing nutritionally egg-like about it.
I intend to raise birds someday. Chickens and ducks for eggs and meat. Maybe microchip them so they can forage and return to their fox-proof coop at night. Idk, it's all a half baked idea and I might suck at killing them. I cant even kill a mouse. I return them to the wild if I catch one, which my gf rolls her eyes at and she's never even caught me talking to them while I do it. What? They're cute!

find a local smaller farm, some may offer a csa box. You'll get higher quality ingredients most of the time for less money since you dont have the transportation or supermarket markup
I have not had troubling finding eggs, but they do seem very expensive lately. Specially the cage-free 100% organic eggs. Really, you buy 15 dozen at once. Refrigerated eggs last from between 3 to 5 weeks. Freezing eggs is not advised. Just checked and Safeway has cage free non-organic eggs at $15.99 for 5 dozen. Walmart brand (Marketside) large, cage-free, organic, brown eggs 18 count are $6.72.
Compared to $0.85, it's quite unreasonable. This inflation stuff SUCKS!
WHY exactly is this happening (shortage + massive price hike) to our beloved chicken eggs of peace?
(Coach your thread titles sicken and infuriate me.)
I spend about $25/month feeding 8 hens, get almost 180 eggs a month on that not a bad investment
Sorry.. usually my thread titles are cut and pasted from articles. Aside from that I read something about a bird flu that might be causing it…🤷♂️
After Church my wife and I went to a Vons to pick up things to make for our New Years dinner. There NOTHING in the eggs section. Completely dry
I'm not too concerned about whether it's a true or false economy. The value would be in quality, like garden tomatoes vs store bought, and that I could give the birds a good life.
I've also thought about raising a few goats since I've got 6 acres and I love goat's cheese and like goat meat. Same reservations tho. Idk if I could kill a mammal. Humans, no problem. They're morally culpable but I don't think I'm allowed to farm those.
Last week when I was at the local Walmart Neighborhood Market, I noticed that the egg section was totally bare. I assumed the refrigerated case where they are normally kept failed so they moved them elsewhere. It is certainly possible they were sold out. I didn't ask because I did not need eggs. The other day when I was in Safeway, their egg section appeared to be fully stocked. Maybe Vons being egg bare was a fluke. We don’t have a Vons Market here.

Fertilizer? Some of them are so full of crap that's pretty much all they're worth .
Went to Costco the other day as I usually like to buy 4-5 packs (Kirkland 24 egg/pack) of eggs at a time. When I went to the register they were limiting the purchase to only 2 packs of eggs per customer. I paid, proceeded to put away the purchase in my car and then went back in, got 2 more packs and went through the self check-out. The guy at the store exit (holding a marker to place a check mark over your receipt) smiled when he realized this was my second go around.did you blow him ???

This is exactly why I got hens, this year. It does cost money to feed them and they are pretty spoilt. I see them as my pets. But the eggs they give me are large with yellow yolks. I have more than I need. I sold a couple of dozen before Christmas.Mmm would love to be one of your spoilt pet
They are culling chickens in the USA because of bird flu. It’s just another way they are trying to starve us. There is no bird flu.

$25/180 = $.13/egg.
Meh. If you enjoy it fine.
At normal prices of say $2/dozen it's $.16/egg.
Figure in your time, etc. and it makes no sense really.
Making your own beer or changing your own motor oil makes no sense either.
You do it because you like to do it.
$1.56 per dozen organic fed zero medication fresh eggs
$1.56 per dozen organic fed zero medication fresh eggs. Bigger than xtra large from the store. We also get free rich fertilized soil from the run, organic compost from the hemp I use in the henhouse, and never have to go to the store for them.
If food supplies were scarce it is a wealth of great protein from my backyard. This spring we are going to add another enclosed run and a single rooster and start breeding chicks.
The effort to own is less than driving for store bought eggs. Just pull the eggs every afternoon, reload feeders a couple times a month. Light raking and that’s it. I have a metal roof on the enclosure with gutters and a rain barrel that supplies a water pipe with pecking spouts.
With zero extra effort could easily have 15 hens in there and double output. My entire current setup is 20x6. It is an exact copy of a “Carolina Coop” that are sold for 6-10k, built mine for about $1100 4 years ago.
I think this is an absolute steal.
Irnonat does not believe this stuff matters, I think, hence why he compared your type of egg to the mass produced, industrial style.
Another thing is the taste, I find my small farm eggs to be infinitely tastier than some sam clubs eggsBigtime.....the yolks are almost orange too instead of being pale yellow.
I think it's great to have your own eggs,You can`t beat the deal I get from my buddy......between 6-8 dozen or more at times, for 5 bucks....you can`t beat that with a bat.
Dollars and cents wise it doesn't make sense really.
That's all.

It makes tremendous sense if you want organic, clean, farm fresh eggs.
He showed you the math.
You compared it to the mass produced walmart cruelty raised eggs, which are currently 4.80/doz on their site (no idea of what it costs in store, by region).
No.
Can you show us where you get his type of eggs for less than than the costs he shared?
Stop egging me on.
Not now.
My comparison was based on $2/dozen.
Stop egging me on.
I can remember not all that long ago when eggs were .99 cents a dozen......I had a wall of eggs in my fridge.

Do you mean there is no bird flu in Australia? Who are 'they' and why are they trying to starve us/you?
Are only hens allowed where you live? Here in the suburb of West Linn folks are allowed to have up to five hens. Noisy roosters are outlawed. Is this discrimination? No roosters and there is no worry about the eggs being fertile which means the keep longer.
One of our neighbors keeps chickens. A few weeks ago, my daughter saw a coyote in their yard. -Bad news for chickens.
What breed of chickens do you have. In Australia, the ISA Brown is considered an excellent egg laying chicken. Supposedly they are also very smart.

Did Coach ever get his eggs?
No, brother. Too pricey. He wasn't willing to shell out for them.
Damn. I was expecting a storybook ending. Should we buy Joe Local apparel to support Coach’s finances, so he can afford his eggs? I’ve been wanting to order his blue tank top

I'd like to, brother, but I'm afraid I can't condone this. Being gay is haram -- if I go out dressed like one then I might get launched off of a roof. And rightly so! I'm issuing a fatwa against Joe's gay tank tops
I found some eggs but Coach needs to fly across the country to get them.

Eggland extra large grade AA 18 pack for $4.99.
Where? That’s a great price
When we crack an egg open, are we aborting the baby chick that would've eventually hatched?
What about a Balut egg? That baby is much farther along in the process, yet humans still abort the fetus in the egg.
I could tell you but then I'd have to kill you.
Eggs going up in price stems from a much deeper issue. The demand increased due to families eating them as a protein substitute for beef, chicken, etc. Sorry, no Biden or Trump to blame for this. Leave the political bullshit out of it but we are heading for the recession
The egg is not fertilized til I say so.
And stop speaking gibberish.
Gouging. Everybody's doing it! There is no substitute for eggs so you'll pay.
got an eighteen pack of eggland's best large eggs for 5.99 yesterday pa.

Bought an 18 pack of eggs today. Thought of Coach
shut up pamithBro...
▫️
I recently read an article about the shelf life of eggs. For the most part, when refrigerated, it is much longer than the carton suggests. So, go ahead and buy those large cartons of eggs because they will be safe to eat for quite awhile. One thing to consider is how long it took the carton of eggs to get to the store. If you can, buy your eggs from a farm. They are bound to be much fresher and it follows they will last a lot longer.

So what do you chicken owners do once the hen stops laying eggs? Put it in a stew or allow it to live out the rest of its natural life?
This stuff is being done purposely. Any moron can see it.
True.
But it has been happening since the beginning of man.
We are just more aware of it due to technology and social media.
It's hard to hide shit these days.

Eggflation appears to be over: $3.69 a dozen xl.
18 pack was 9.57 yesterday.
Were they 'free range' organic eggs? You can tell they are free range or pasture raised by the egg yokes which are considerably darker and bigger. If so, you did good. An 18 pack of pasture raised organic chicken eggs is currently $11.49.

Been purchasing the 24 pack of Eggland’s Best lately. They seem to have superior egg technology IMHO
Eggland's Best are Grade A which is by definition, not the best.
Grade AA is better.
Not that they are not decent eggs but they are kind of small eggs.
I found this odd.
Get the XLs then tough guy!
Eggland C!assic Large are smaller than other large eggs being sold.
So there...sniff!
I have noticed this. Should we file a class action lawsuit together? (nh)

Canola oil is shit.
So their eggs are shit.
Or maybe not, but I'm going with that.
Yup, canola oil.

An Aldi opened in the town next to us so I finally got to go to one.

Plus, they want you to put .25 to take a shopping cart, and don't give bags? Da fuq?
I thought it was shit. I didn’t bring a quarter and my bags because I’m not a California homo. Everything in the store is scattered with no name brands that you have to read to see what the item even is, so shopping takes twice as long. And it wasn’t any cheaper than Costco or Walmart. Sucks! Go back to Germany!
why are chickens eating vegetarian?
Free range and pasture raised are different.
Free range doesn't mean much.
You are correct. Free Range and Pasture Raised are different.
To further complicate labeling eggs is whether they are Organic or not. Organic eggs must be free-range eggs, but free-range eggs aren't necessarily organic, as they do not need to be fed organic feed. Pastured eggs are not considered organic. So this suggests that the labeling on the carton of eggs I posted lies. Pastured eggs come from chickens that are free to wander outdoors in a pasture where they can eat grass, worms, bugs and whatever else pleases their palate.
As for nutritional value, some evidence suggests that pastured eggs may be better for you. A 2010 study from Penn State showed that they had twice as much vitamin E and long-chain omega-3 fatty acids as eggs from caged hens.
Don't confuse pastured eggs with pasteurized eggs. Pasteurized eggs are gently heated in their shells, just enough to kill the bacteria but not enough to actually cook the egg.
