This is exactly why I got hens, this year. It does cost money to feed them and they are pretty spoilt. I see them as my pets. But the eggs they give me are large with yellow yolks. I have more than I need. I sold a couple of dozen before Christmas.
They are culling chickens in the USA because of bird flu. It’s just another way they are trying to starve us. There is no bird flu.

Are only hens allowed where you live? Here in the suburb of West Linn folks are allowed to have up to five hens. Noisy roosters are outlawed. Is this discrimination? No roosters and there is no worry about the eggs being fertile which means the keep longer.
One of our neighbors keeps chickens. A few weeks ago, my daughter saw a coyote in their yard. -Bad news for chickens.
What breed of chickens do you have? In Australia, the ISA Brown is considered an excellent egg laying chicken. Supposedly they are also very smart.
