This is exactly why I got hens,  this year. It does cost money to feed them and they are pretty spoilt. I see them as my pets. But the eggs they give me are large with yellow yolks. I have more than I need. I sold a couple of dozen before Christmas.
They are culling chickens in the USA because of bird flu. It’s just another way they are trying to starve us. There is no bird flu.

Are only hens allowed where you live? Here in the suburb of West Linn folks are allowed to have up to five hens. Noisy roosters are outlawed. Is this discrimination?  No roosters and there is no worry about the eggs being fertile which means the keep longer.

One of our neighbors keeps chickens. A few weeks ago, my daughter saw a coyote in their yard. -Bad news for chickens.   

What breed of chickens do you have? In Australia, the ISA Brown is considered an excellent egg laying chicken. Supposedly they are also very smart.

Prime, you need to go down the rabbit hole. I think you should first look up “event 201”. This Covid-19 was a catalyst to the rest.
As for my chickens, I am unable to have roosters either because I live in the suburbs. I have 2 isa browns and yes they are very intelligent. One is quite bossy and the other Martha is very chatty and closes her eyes when I pick her up and kiss her face. I got Martha as a tiny little chick only a few hours old. So she’s been very babied and is very special. I also have 2 black Australaks and 2 white ones. All have their own personalities and all are layers meaning they produce large eggs. In addition I got 3 silkies but my Dior died before Christmas. They produce these little eggs which I scramble for breakfast. I got my silkies because I just wanted them… not for the eggs.
