I think there is a tendency for us to want what we don't have. When I was a rail, I wanted to get 'swole'. When I finally got big, I discovered it was uncomfortable carrying around 40 extra pounds regardless that it was mostly muscle. A lifetime later, I am pretty much back to were I started and it feels good... as good as one can feel at 78 years of age.
-
That's not what I find comical. Going to the gym , lifting, looking in the mirror, counting grams of protein and carbs and fat, packing lunches full of chicken, rice etc.... thats still fun.
But looking at the professional side of it or the competitive side of it does seem ridiculous.... look, I have the utmost respect for the forum members here who have competed (with one obvious, shit talking, lying, cheating, quitting exception) but when you see Big Ramy in his glittering codpiece... it's frankly embarrassing to be a 'fan' of the sport in it's current form.

As lame as it sounds, there is something to be said about selflove

What I find comical, is that at 20-22 I had no real thoughts of buying a magazine with dudes in cut off daisy duke jorts, screaming at each other while lifting weights. It never occurred to me how ghey body building could be until I got older.
-
For me it the was the diet. Thinking sticking to a plan was hardcore
Packing my meals and eating out of Tupperware at lunch meetings, weddings, sporting events etc.
Like I was doing a battle for theOlympia video , directed by mits
As you get older you realize it’s really genetics.

I remember refusing to eat certain foods at football game parties and shit.
I'd eat steak and potatoes driving to the pregame cookouts at NFL games when i had season tickets.
God forbid i ate hotdogs and burgers for 1 day.
That was so gay and i'm sure everyone was rightfully labeling me an asshat.
Because i do the same thing now. ;D
I joke with people so much about the "anabolic window".
It's so retarded when i look back at it.
-
Competing for me was just a way to test myself. Motivation to stick to a diet and push myself. My first 2 competitions were fun...I came to see it what it was though. A pageant full of arrogance self loving narcissists. The women were the absolute worst. For me though I enjoy the journey of getting bigger and leaner. All in all it's truly not worth it trying to chase a dream of being a pro though
-
When I first going on BB message boards and for some years after my mindset wasn’t much different than Bhank in terms of the simple narcissism.
He may have just been hooked opioids since he was young and never grew up.

This. I really didn't think anything of it.
It was probably after I found my way to GB that the sordid truth came out....the G4P, the rec drugs, the prostituting,... once my eyes were open to it there was no unseeing it.
Yeah, it's ghey as fuck....
A few years ago I had a layover at an airport and picked up an issue of MD at the newsstand. I was about halfway through an article when my plane began to board. The woman working at checkout just looked repulsed when she scanned the barcode then conspicuously set the magazine face down as I paid.

I can remember taking my kids and their friends, to the Olympia conventions in Las Vegas. We would be three cars full of my friends, kids, and coolers. We would get in the parking lot at about 8 am, to be up close so we could drop off our bags of free stuff. Popped our first beer too, at 8 am. When the doors opened, the kids went one way, and me and my friends went the other way. All day long we would go back to the car, drop off heavy bags of free stuff, and grab a cold beer or two. We had the best of times. Probally went about 4-5 years in a row.
Looking back, besides the fun we all had with the kids, (teenagers) and friends being in Vegas for the night, it was pretty silly for a grown ass man like myself to be wandering around the convention looking for free stuff.
Pro bodybuilding is stupid.

I’m sure all 40 pounds you gained was all blubber

:D Yeah, and I wondered why girls asked if a person was gay as soon as they found out he lifted weights.
-
It’s only gay if you want it to be. The majority of lifters that wear cut off jean shirts, and either a cut off shirt or a flannel shirt with work boots aren’t gay but just overly passionate about the sport. Sometimes it’s just best to wear some sunglasses in the gym while training to block the haters.
-
And the single worst thing about it is taking dangerous drugs... Not to mention how phony and transitory the muscles/strength are...all dependent on weekly injections...

I am sure some of you fine gents can relate
Hilarious looking back how important I thought being big and swole was.
What hooks people is actually how lean u can get just eating meat and low carbing and maintaining it while being natty if you have discipline
It feels so 'woth it' when your young and all u care about is chasing pussy. Then fast foward years you realize how moronic you must be to do all these epic effort workouts and your max bench and squat is still the same or even less, then you realize all the other gym goers are too afraid moronic or delusional to admit this
Very few get stronger like 2% rest are delusional , non of us are special enough to continue to gain
-
Next question then:
Would your life have turned out better or worse if not for bb?

It's way better the other way round, try to become financially independent as young as possible so you can f*ck all this business and society crap and focus completely on your BB and harem goals from age 30 on 8)

Bodybuilding is gay.
-
With the exception of one individual here....you get to a point and realize that people don't really look at you and are amazed.
I tell people that bodybuilding is healthy....competing in it is the fucking worst. You WILL develop very bad eating habits. Like : OMG its 2:10pm I didn't have my 45th meal at 2:00pm....my gains are going to be so damn lost.
-

The funniest part is when you finally get to the point that you realize that when you're natty for quite some time (and also plan to stay natty) that it barely makes any difference whether you weigh all of your carbs, even salt and log all of your Micros and Macros in detail, or whether you just eat pretty much whatever the f*ck u want, make sure that you got some Protein in your diet and roughly estimate your overall caloric intake ;D
-
It's amazing how people think they'll lose muscle so quickly if a workout or 2 is missed or even a week or 2 for holiday.
Genetics are everything like i always have traps chest and tris and look like i workout in clothes. I realise as always trained without drugs i look the same if go to the gym 5 days a week or once.
As for it being gay, only if you want it to be, like there's nothing gay about the bob chick pics with that guy all over him. ;D

Good point. Those Charles Atlas ads for bodybuilding in the comic books some of us read when we were kids suggested that you weren't a 'real man' until you got big, strong and a became a bully. To a young boy this suggested the opposite of someone being gay.

And the classic 'sand in the face' ads. Which growing up and frequenting the beach in So Cal really hit home.

Personally, I never went so far as to weigh my food or keep logs of what I ate (other than a couple of times I posted in the "what did you eat yesterday" thread on Getbig). When I was a teenager, I fixed myself a lot of banana milk shakes with one or two raw eggs added because I was obsessed with gaining weight. Note, back then people didn't worry about the dangers of eating raw eggs.
How much to eat is not rocket science. When you are hungry, eat something. If you are not hungry, don't eat. When you feel full, stop eating. Save the leftovers or throw the food out. Remember your mother telling you to "clean your plate"? Comments like this should be prohibited. Stuffing your mouth when you feel full is tantamount treating your body like a garbage can.
I buy my own groceries, and fix most of my own meals. I eat what I want when I want. It is a privilege afforded to those of us who no longer need worry about feeding anyone else, like our kids or spouse.
-
I never really took it all that seriously
Off season I just ate regular food, didnt really bother too much about protien intake
I counted calories , I have never weighed out food meticulously
I measure it once and then just go off how much it looks
I was never a big eater so was always in shape through my teens and eraly 20s without really training all that much
Played rugby and did a few weights
I entered shows because I was in pretty good shape anyway and dieting has always been pretty straightforward and isnt really all that difficult.
I dont treat the bad part of dieting as an enemy, I treat it as a friend, when my body is struggling for food I tell myself now its feeding on the fat cells and it wont be long before im in shape
I stopped competing at 31 and had really just hit my stride condition wise
Maybe I should have had a good two years offseason and then come back.
No regrets though, Im back at 57 still competitive still liking it.

Charles Atlas looked like shit

Charles Atlas looked like shit
Thank you finally somebody said it. Worst genetics of 1950. Smart business man though.
-
It was a lot more fun when less people were doing it. Today not so much.
-
Next question then:
Would your life have turned out better or worse if not for bb?
My life is much better because of bodybuilding. Almost all of the people I know my age are in terrible physical condition with many already having serious health problems.
-

He looked way better than other men in the 1930's.

And we have our entire lives for trial and error. After a while you should figure out how much you can eat without putting on fat. There’s really no need to count calories.
My life is much better because of bodybuilding. Almost all of the people I know my age are in terrible physical condition with many already having serious health problems.
This. Bodybuilding ticks some important boxes: strength, muscle loss prevention and body fat control. I think it’s also a good idea to do some cardio, stretching, and mobility work.
-

TRUE!!

Half of the men were skinny and half were fat. Think Laurel & Hardy.

also insanely gay, you're just oiling yourself up for mother men to judge your body based on what appeals to them.. completely fucking subjective based on what makes their dicks tingle

Bodybuilding as a “sport”, agree ghay as fuk. Technically it is a beauty pageant not a contest.
Bodybuilding as an exercise style is the absolute best way to burn fat and stave off osteoporosis of any exercise. It is the safest style of training to continuously increase effort as well.

;D

BB WENT TO THE GAY SIDE, WHEN THE BLACKS STARTING FLIPPING AROUND AND BREAK DANCING.

Yeah, most of us who bought “Da Muscle Books” did so for the training. Hell, the mags didn’t post contest results and pics until several months after the event.

not at all, bb is the worst of the "barbell sports," you'd get much more out of CrossFit, strongman, weightlifting. something with both conditioning and hypertrophy
-
IVE BEEN LURKING FOR A BIT,AND READING SOME OF THIS 'HANKINS' CHARACTER'S POSTS.
THIS GUY CLAIMS HES IN SHAPE.
HE COULDNT COMPLETE A CROSSFIT NOOBS STARTER WOD (WORKOUT OF THE DAY) LET ALONE BE 'IN SHAPE'.
IM NT INTO CROSSFIT, JUST AN EXAMPLE OF THIS GUYS POOR CONDITION.
TOO MUCH VAPES, TOO MANY CREPE'S.

Agreed.
Hate the faggy "isolation work".
Most cannot carry a fucking luggage upstairs without risking a disk herniation

I agree. I wasn't around in the 1930's (surprise, surprise) but in looking at old photographs folks were leaner. Much leaner than they are today. Approximately 10 percent of U.S. adults were classified as having obesity during the 1950s. In 2011 to 2012, however, the CDC reported approximately 35 percent of U.S. adults had obesity; the prevalence of obesity among American adults has more than tripled within the last six decades.

Seeing people in the gym carrying around Tupperware Eating chicken and rice, drinking protein constantly is ridiculous haha, staying in good shape, eating what you want in moderation is key, competitive bbing is a laughing stock imo.

Not to mention those people are doing their health a diservice by eating such a non varried and nutritionally poor diet mixed with occasional binging on fast food
Truly shit

Wrong on so many levels, actually a pretty foolish statement.
“Bodybuilding” aka resistance training is so much safer than CrossFit or strongman training there is no comparison. If you eliminate the dieting and dehydration for the beauty pageant, the actual style of lifting for hypertrophic effects is something that can be done by people of almost any age (the elderly) and can be done with numerous physical disabilities.
Training a large muscle group for hypertrophy results in an increased caloric burn lasting 72 hours or longer. Cardio can do that, but only early in your training until your body adapts and then the caloric use becomes more centered on the actual time of exercise, and within just a short time of stepping off the treadmill ect, you return to baseline rapidly. Increasing the difficulty becomes difficult quickly and you will be doing marathon length sessions to match the impact of a short session pretty rapidly.
So the problem is increasing the difficulty to challenge your body as you adapt. CrossFit is even worse and the workouts get insane within a short period of time if you wish to have similar results to your earlier training.
Weightlifting is very easy to increase your workout difficulty and challenge your body. You can increase the weight slightly, decrease your rest periods, or do more reps. You can use machines very safely. A 72 year old with a fused spine can train legs (or almost any body part) on machines. And can keep improving and moving up safely.
Every time you train your muscles and get them to trigger an adaptive response, you greatly increase your metabolism for an extended period, as stated 72 hours or more while you recover. As you increase your lean tissue your baseline caloric use increases as well. Combine this with the proven bone density increases and it is a fantastic way for almost anyone to exercise and improve their body composition. You also get cardiovascular benefits if you train with vigor, not as much as a true cardio workout but for some people that is perfect.

what's dangerous about strongman style training? im not talking wsm training, i'm talking picking shit up from the ground, carrying something, tossing it over your shoulder. naturals human movements

Go look at photos from Woodstock and count the fat people.

I enjoy bodybuilding , the diet helps anxiety
but I had a year where I got into psychedelics and DMT very deeply - totally destroyed my ego and my aspect on bb; ing
I have no desire anymore to impress a judge or anyone else for that matter - makes me feel good and its what I have always done
but competing is another thing - the other thing that I find comical is how all these young kids like to hit impromptu poses in the gym now - they look like fckn idiots
-

Heavy weights and awkward angles while moving at the same time?
-
Heavy weights and awkward angles while moving at the same time?
no one is taking heavy weights, again not training for the world strongest man. you can train strongman style with moderate weights. what awkward angle? most carry events are on the sagittal plane. you pick something up and walk forward to a destination, not a lot of quick cuts in strongman. and yeah you should be working all the planes, that's where life exists.
there's next to no rotational bb movements, are they even any?

Chicken and rice lol. Most Bbs are dumb as a rock, no wonder they swear by the least nutrient dense meals. Not to mention oatmeal and peanut butter which are complete garbage foods for humans
