Even though I'm Christian I like Slayer, I may not like the lyrics but i like the adrenaline rush. I feel Slayer is better than Metallica and Megadeth

Ill take Slayer... Loved early Metallica, huge drop-off/disappointment after that...
Slayer stayed pretty true to themselves throughout... Reign in Blood, South of Heaven are basically Metal greatness...
-
Metallica made many more "good" songs, but the real good ones from Slayer really kicks ass
-
Slayatanic!
Gaytallica had 4 good albums and the 5.98 EP - Black album had a few good songs, since then, its been mostly garbage.

Ride The Lightning and Master of Puppets were good

Ride The Lightning and Master of Puppets were good
Yes, those are 2 of the 4.
Puppets is probably one of the top albums of all time.
SC is right though, after the Black Album, it was shit, but lately it's been better, but nothing that's really epic, except maybe "All Nightmare Long".

Fuck off Pamith.

This is why SLAYER forever. Contrast Metallica and Slayer when this came out.
-
I remember getting this album as a kid ans was just blown away by the sheer ferocity, power, speed, and precision. Still amazing to this day. Black Magic riff is still head banging glory

Agree.
That Seattle concert is legendary.
Newsted was awesome live. Dude cranked.

Neither Slayer nor Metallica but this was my favorite song in 1985
and in 1986

I do like slayer..not necessarily the lyrics though...good lifting music megadeth over Metallica for me though

Angel Of Death is one of the funniest songs of all time. I love blasting it. Absolutely killer riff.

Agreed. Although, I'm in the car with my girlfriend right now and blasting Wherever I May Roam. That's a fucking tune!
-
Hetfield is better than Arraya....and Hetfield is as good a guitarist as any.

That album began their 18 year run of shit.

I can't even remember what one it's on; I'd have to look it up. I tend to just create playlists with decent individual songs now on Spotify. Got loads of cool workout ones.

Fortress worships Met’s first four, but Slayer didn’t shit its bed … and then continue to shit for another 30-plus years.
SLAYER!
-
Metallica's first 4 albums are untouchable. I've seen them in concert 6 times in the 90's.
The black album was shit IMO, but it's when they became mainstream.
Slayer is good, some of their songs are one of a kind.
Someone a while back said people hated Metallica for changing to be more mainstream.
And people wonder what would have happened if Slayer did the same.
Many critics against slayer believe they should have transitioned.
Interesting thoughts on that. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
I can't choose a winner because while i like Metallica, you couldn't pay me to listen to any album after And Justice For All.
Their Garage Days covers album is pretty good too.

On the Black Album, I like Of Wolf and Man and Sandman will be iconic for me because of Mariano Rivera. Couldn't care less for any of the others, save maybe Through the Never.
To me Puppets is the album that's untouchable, and that alone puts them over Slayer. Is there a better start/end to an album than Battery/Damage Inc? Nah. I probably listen to a part of it every day.
One caveat about my 18 year run of shit - I thought the first S&M was great. I think the S&M version of One is better that the original.
Seen Metallica a handful of times, but I will say I saw Slayer at a club in Boston, where I could go to the bar, get a beer, then get right back to front standing about 4 feet in front of them. There wasn't even really a stage, they were just standing there. Maybe 100 or so people.
And the fuckers went 3 hours hard, no different if it was a stadium. King was an absolute monster. Even got a Jeff Hanneman guitar pick.
-

Haha, man, she's cool with it all. She's a little weirdo. I first met her at an Iron Maiden gig that my best mate took me to see with him. She's trying to get me to take her to Download Festival now.

Most hardcore metal heads prefer Slayer but millions and millions love Metallica.
-
Hung backstage with James, Kirk and Jason, before the band’s Hamilton, Ontario, show during its … And Justice For All tour.
For me, essentially, that capped my fandom for the group.
Metallica did little for me. Won’t comment on anything after.
Bought RtL as a new release.

The Black Album and 18 year shit run picked up a lot of these fans.

Slayer knew when to retire. Metallica should have retired after Death Magnetic. They have too much $$$ to play thrash and it shows. Been phoning it in for a LOOOONG time.

I actually think Death Magnetic + Hardwired +72 is better than anything post prior these and post Black album.
But the issue is, to me, there's nothing epic on those albums (outside of All Nightmare Long (to me))....there are good songs, but JAMS (Just Another Metallica Song) at this point.
-
Nothing they've done compares to the 1st three... Amazing...
-
To me, just my opinion, nothing Metallica ever did comes anywhere close to this. The speed, power, shark frenzy, and aggressive tones is insane.
This album is like one 30 minute straight hurricane, not a collection of different songs. The ending of Post Mortem and Reigning Blood is like " WTF just happened!"
Slaytanic for life.

Raining Blood is epic for sure, but I would argue Fight Fire with Fire, Battery, Damage Inc, are all right there with that genre.
But that album is epic....will use today for deads and sleds............

The this with Reign in blood - there is not a single song you skip over - its like one relentless assault on your ears.
-
RIB = Epic Savagery...
Raining blood
From a lacerated sky
Bleeding its horror
Creating my structure
Now, I shall reign in blood
-
Also, loved Slayer - Black Magic in 1983
-
Divine intervention was the first Slayer album I heard as a kid. One of the best album covers of all time. Love Metallica's first 4 and a half albums, the sound on ''...and justice for all'' is awesome.

Iron Maiden for the win
Another band that needs to have a talk with their singer about retiring. Bruce isn't even sniffing those higher notes...hell, he's not even hitting the regular verse notes. They need to tune down a step or whatever and see if he can even do that. Not everybody's voice is going to hold up like a Dio, Halford...or King Diamond...haha. Even Geoff Tate sounds terrible and he might have been the best of the 80s.

Saw WASP on sunday, Blackie's voice was still on par, his back not so much. He sat through the entire show.
I'm going to see Maiden next Sunday. They are starting their new tour in my country. Would be great if they opened with Caught somewhere in time. Deja-vu live would be awesome as well

That song and Sea of Madness are two of my all time favorites.

Blackie performing while seated is beyond depressing.

Haven't seen WASP recently but Blackie uses a lot of backing tracks. Did you notice any obvious lip-syncing? Several videos on youtube show it.

Sandman is a song i despise, because that is the song that made them mainstream. And every single radio station played in every 30 minutes for like a year. Everyone i knew didn't like Metallica, but once Sandman came out EVERYONE was a fan, it drove me nuts. I really don't care for the song, but Wolf and Man, The God That Failed and My Friend of Misery are decent.
Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets are incredible.
I still listen to RtL all the time.
Orion was one of my favorite songs as a kid and the reason i played the guitar in High School.
Slayer to me is just the same thing song after song. Even Iron Maiden has a diverse play set, like Metallica.
NIN used to play at this small venue in Austin, Texas back in the day. My brother and i used to go see them quite often, but like Metallica I think Trent went too mainstream.
I do agree S&M had some hits in there, completely forgot about that album.

WASP is great. Saw them open for KISS in the mid 80s - GREAT show.
Blackie and his revolving bandmates have continued to put out music all these years. Still love the early stuff the best.
Saw Blackie do a bunch of Q and A type interviews last year, promoting what I guess is this tour? Sucks to hear he's crippled up. Hopefully it's temporary....

Yeah, I agree, Sandman would be forgettable to me if it wasn't for Rivera. But to be at Yankee Stadium when that music played in the WS was f'n fantastic. The stadium shook.
I may have told this, but I bought that album day one, put it in the camaro, listened, was like....Sandman ok, yeah, different, then got to the chorus of The Unforgiven and wanted to throw the disc out the window. Was so bummed.

Felt the same way after Maiden got Bruce and Adrian back in 99 and released their reunion album in 2000.
I wanted to like that album so much, but at heart I wanted them to go back to my favourite albums which were Somewhere in Time and Seventh son. Instead, they went with a more prog rock/metal approach that was kind meh...

I never got into Slayer, music just didn’t ever appeal and no song ever jumped out at me.
Enter Sandman was the first Metallica song I heard. Loved it. Have seen them live 5 times when they came to Australia. Justice is my favourite album then Puppets.
Metallica were a gateway to Metal music for myself being 14 at the time. I got into Pantera after Metallica and then Sepultura along with Iron Maiden in my teenage years.
I don’t really listen to Metallica anymore but it’s basically all I play on guitar. I have a Hetfield explorer and Hammet Gibson spider guitars. I run it through some studio speakers and have Metallica album patches which are almost identical to the album sound. When I play to the album it just sounds like another guitar. Pretty mind blowing.

That's cool you can play it.

Played from 14-18 and hardwired a lot of Metallica song to muscle memory. Bought these 2 at 42yrs old and played Master of a puppets first go all the way through lol. Can’t do that for all songs, just the ones I played a lot.
Playing a lot of Limp Bizkit at the moment. Having the patches to sound 99% album sound really makes the difference because you ‘want’ to pick up a guitar. As a kid I couldnt afford nice guitars, amps or effects like my friends had. I had the biggest piece of shit guitar as a kid. Fucking horrible and no, having shit gear doesn’t make you somehow awesome, it slows progress.
Pantera has sick guitar work from Dimebag. Loved a lot of their songs and heavy is always good.
A day to remember is what I listen to mostly now.
I've seen Pantera live
Had tickets at 19 to see them live in Sydney. Was mega sick and gave them to my brother who saw them instead. Such a shame but then again I can watch concerts on YouTube.
Kirk Hammett guitar work live is a shocker. He is so shit it isn’t funny.

Of all time metal bands I would put Metallica at #1, with Black Sabbath, Judas Priest (no homo), Iron Maiden and Megadeth rounding out the top 5. I would have Anthrax, Trivium and Breaking Benjamin all above Slayer.

Liar
I did, twice actually, once they played with morbid angel and sepultura (many yrs ago) and another time I saw them at the ozzfest, they are great live. Keep in mind i'm 46 and I've been a ''metalhead'' since I was 17, lol

It's a matter of personal opinion, to me slayer is better than metallica and megadeth, never got that much into trivium, anthrax is alright though, but slayer is a whole nother level, i'm also a big fun of king diamond and mercyful fate and Ratt

Thank you for responding so I didn't have to respond to Pamith.
Saw Pantera three times, all at pretty small venues. Even have a two inch scar under my left pec from holding down the front standing row - I basically was pressed against a guard rail for two hours while people bounced off my back, and the rail gave me a pressure bruise.
To me, this is the greatest live video ever. Reports of up to 500,000+ in attendance, with 10,000 cops. Most probably couldn't speak english, but they all go nuts at the breakdown at the end. Cool backstory too:
-
Ratt is awesome.
Yes I agree, I'm a huge fan, I saw them live too
-
Metallica has some great songs but comparing them to Slayer is a sacrilege as latter was the Schutzstaffel of hard underground music.
Slayer in the later 80ies was a force to be reckoned with.

When Kerry still had hair...

Hetfield got half his body burned to a crisp by bad pyrotechnics and continued touring. Hanneman died from a little spider bite. ::) What a baby. Metallica wins again

Who wins in a fight? James Hetfield, Tom Araya or Phil Anselmo?
-

Anselmo's back would give out.
-
Ham Kirkett impressed with Megadeths latest single
-
Anselmo has had Ronnie Coleman type surgeries in his back and joints, he doesn't even move in the Pantera concerts nowadays. Just stands there.
Prime Anselmo would have whooped anyone's ass.
In Rex's autobiography, he says the first time he saw Anselmo was outside a club where he was kicking the shit out of a whole band.
