Post by: Thin Lizzy on February 10, 2024, 08:22:25 AM
Should’ve done it a long time ago. Finally dumping Verizon Fios TV.

Just wondering what streaming services if any y’all use.

HD antennae are cheap and solve this problem.

YT TV also gives local news.

I don't have any streaming services.

My roof TV antenna picks up all the local broadcast NFL games on the major broadcast networks.

There is also a website that rebroadcasts all games the next day if I want to watch them.

Get a VPN like Surfshark.  Very inexpensive.

This antenna is awesome.  You connect it by coax to your TV.  Around $30.

I don’t care about pro sports anymore.

At this point, other than basic news and financial news which I can get online, old school tv has nothing to offer me. I’ve moved on.

I just need a wifi router for redundancy in case cell service goes out.

Cutting the cord was a major blow to the culture of western society.

Cutting the cord is genuinely just a way to say “I only watch Netflix and Amazon prime”. Those two woke garbage companies now get to run a monopoly on what content people consume.

Given that I am one of the more affluent get biggers, I have the following streaming services, as me and Rory have very diverse tastes.

Netflix
Amazon prime
Peacock
Paramount
HBO Max
Disney+, to include Hulu and ESPN
Shudder
Sling

Free ones I have:

Tubi

Yup, however, that’s on the consumer, not on the companies.

We cut the cord but now have so many streaming services that the cost is as much, if not greater, than it was when we had cable on our 5-6 televisions, which is probably what they intended all along.

We do have cable company wi-fi because cell service is weak, at best, where we are. I don’t know anything about StarLink but want to look into it.

We've snipped the cord ages ago, opting solely for streaming platforms, as mentioned in your post. A while back, we dabbled with Apollo TV, a shadowy service that seemed to offer everything under the sun—fresh from the theater movies, PPV events, and a bunch of popular shows. But we swiftly cut ties, suspecting its legality, given that our subscription was being discreetly paid in Bitcoin.

We're always looking for a good streaming service though. So, if you've stumbled upon a good service provider that grants access to the latest movies and PPV events, don't hesitate to share.

TVMate is my best friend: all the local channels I want from across the country... and all the premium stations and movies associated with cable streamed from the dark web (the service provider is not in the US). Use of TVMate requires use of a VPN. 8)

Cut the cable a long time ago, mainly watch Britbox, Acorn, Prime, Tubi, etc.
All the TV shows on pay channels like Netflix are released on Usenet, I download (encrypted NZB files) to USB stick, plug it into the side of the TV.
Went from like 280.00 a month for TV/Internet (Scamcast), to 110.00. (90.00 for internet (1Gb fiber), 20.00 for stream channels)...
Wouldnt watch NFL if they paid me... I do however watch the Bruins 10-minute replay (Youtube) each AM after the game the night before.

I just have Prime right now because it comes with Amazon membership, and whatever the antenna picks up locally. Also like Tubi.

Had Netflix till about a year ago, dumped it when I realized I was watching it maybe 2x per month.

Anything else I just free preview ;).

My brother-in-law gave us a FireStick loaded with some of these sketchy services that have questionable legality, but it never worked that well and wasn’t worth the hassle. Saving $200 bucks a month isn’t going to impact one’s life one way or another, and if it is, you probably need to reevaluate.

I've been offered the same stick recently and am considering whether to check it out, moreso to see if I can pick up more French TV. Similar to those kodi boxes from years ago, I think. I was never a fan of them but things may be better, now.

I've recently got into Netflix after years of not bothering so have been catching up on the true crime docs and a few movies. Also use Now TV which is similar except there's no subtitles, which pisses me off.

I’d say Amazon and tubi have the most.

I have all that and it costs too much.  HBO Max and Amazon are also slowly phasing in commercials. You can avoid this of course by paying extra. When Netflix starts doing this it's over. I remember when cable started the big selling point was no commercials.  Then they brought in some for certain channels. Then they said fuck it. Commercials on all shows. These steaming movies services are heading in that directions.

Precisely what Now TV did. Like you said, they want more money for the added luxury of not watching black actors advertising A,B,C every 10 minutes.

The TV is a good transition from the computer as it's way less concentration needed, and then I finish off with a book for the last 45 minutes before sleep. I seem to need way more alertness when watching through my laptop.

I’m ashamed to say that I have pretty much the same. I am a dork and like the Star Wars universe shit so Disney + , and as soon as I got Hulu instead of Apple or YT - they started playing shit we want to watch. I probably watch too fckn much tv. But honestly I find Tubi to be my go to.

I have the attention span of a child, so i like to watch things in 20-30 minute segments. Then go do something around the house or read something. Takes me all night to watch one show. ;D

Sitting down and watching a movie or TV for 2 hours is nearly impossible. I'm a bit hyper active.

So, i found that i'll watch segments in between working and reading Getbig or something else online. Right now, i'm on a kick of watching YT videos of offroad/overlanding videos. I just got a new vehicle so preparing to mod it so we can go on long treks across Colorado/Utah, etc.

Yes, thank you.  What our uniformed friend fails to understand is that all American media is owned by one of six mega corporations - Comcast, Disney, Newscorp, etc.  Bill Clinton is responsible for this rise in media consolidation thanks to his Telecommunications Act of 1996.

I was over at my Sisters house during the holidays and she had a movie on called your Christmas or Mine.  It was by far the wokest movie I had ever seen.  An interracial couple spends Christmas at each others families houses due to a mix up on where they were supposed to go and a lost cell phone.

https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/your_christmas_or_mine (https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/your_christmas_or_mine)

I always see advertisements for this type of movie and wonder who could possibly be watching this garbage.  Now I know.  My sister thought the movie was great.

With Netflix you do have to sift through a ton of barrage, but there are a few good movies on there by mistake.  I can usually count on one hand the things I'm willing to watch and that list changes every month.

There's a free view channel here in the UK dedicated to those movies. Called Great Romance. Not gonna lie, I recorded a few over Xmas for a feelgood Xmas vibe and the older ones are way better. Plots consist of city girl returns home for holidays after 10 or 15 years and meets local farm boy that turns out to be part of a rich town dynasty family and although they don't start off too well, by chance meetings in the local town or car trouble she experiences; love blossoms. The end.
