Best hair/legs combo in BB history
WooooSHHHHHHHHHHHH Levroneeeeeeeeeeeeeee
-
Guy had a great look in his prime. Looked unbelievable in 81. That shot of him hitting a side chest pose on the beach, the quintessential California bodybuilder of the early 80's. But also struck me as a total kook too. Comes across as whacky in some of his training videos. It's no wonder he tore his bicep.
At 69 years old he looks like he's got to be on a hearty TRT dose. A few years back he was looking like an old lesbian.
-
Tom had a main role in documentary Total Rebuild a film about one Olympia he was in (not sure which year)
wonder if is available on Netflix yet
WoooooSHHHHHHHHHHHHH Golden Eagle

Good on Tom - looking incredible for any age, let alone 69 !!

Platz always looked very awkward. In his prime, or old. Short, his face deformed due to GH, oversized legs, he could never get any proportions right.
His claim to fame was being a leg freak.
-
Why?
No offense BigRo but pony tails just don't look good on older men or balding men.
They look either like bikers or hipsters.
Platz would look much better with a serious businesslike hairstyle.
This is my opinion.
-
My nikka
-
My wife peeked over me commented, “Will drop dead, retard!”
I can understand keeping in shape but not being able to move on, trying to emulate 40 years back just looks pitiful…

Have you been welcomed by Wes yet?

He looks like crap- and he does need to get rid of that fag ponytail.
-
Is this really looking like crap esp at 69?

nah... i'm 57 and have perfect 80's Peter Frampton locks going on... pony if needed on occasion... my boss hates it... which is awesome... wife, daughters.. and their friends love it.... so it's staying for now... keep your life stress free.. it helps everything.. ;D

Pics or it didn't happen.

sure.. haha,,, (nh)... right after workout... priorites...

My favorite memory of platz was when he turned around bent over, and took off his pants revealing shredded hamstrings, the audience went wild, as he remained bent over
-
He looks like crap- and he does need to get rid of that fag ponytail.
Are you the same age & looking better than Tom ?
-
That's god damn impressive. Must be the best "side thighs" of anyone that age ever.
-
And still trains like a retard.
-
And still trains like a retard.
;D
-
Maintaining some size on TRT is one thing that type of vascularity in the legs is next level, not questioning what he's doing he's a genetic freak, but there would be a lot of consistency in what he's been doing, if I was to guess consistently test and HGH along with diet. Props to him looks fantastic for his age.
-
he was no Teufel.
-
Long hair and faggotry are connected?
Definitely, lol

he was no Teufel.
Tom went on to far surpass Ron................
& Ron went on to Kill himself with Alcohol ::) sad demise.
-
And still trains like a retard.
Tom is the original Gym Idiot. Great physique nonetheless though.

Those for sure but I think people default to what they know, and in his prime it was all about Deca. Everything was built around that and I'm sure that's part of it now.
And if he's still squatting at 69, congratulations, good work
People actully paid him money to demonstrate his gym retardedness...

His gym retardedness worked for him & made him a legend in his sport
Which is more than any of us has achieved - its easy to slag him off from
The side lines.

Surprised he hasn't killed himself in the gym yet.

For sure. Especially on this forum we put down all bodybuilders and call them all losers. I try to say something positive too, like it's great he can still train. But the training really was "special," I wonder if anyone of his peers ever told him he was absolutely ridiculous...

What like Ronnie's or Branch's training - were they ever told how ridiculous
it was ??
-
his leg training was heavy, but also with many reps. And alot of forced extra reps on accessories
what I recall he trained them once a week and he said he for sure needed it for the recovery... could be wrong, maybe he trained more frequently in his prime.
-

I think most people in Bodybuilding like Ronnie but of course know he turned himself into a cripple.
Listen..you only get one spine & if you´re honest most athletes in other sports call it a day when serious problems occur.
Ronnie didn´t & what can you call his mentality? brave or stupidity ?

He had a special approach regarding squats. He claimed to do them only once a month and separated from leg day.

Never heard that. Cite your source please.

One of his seminars posted on youtube. Can't remember, it was years ago.

Maybe later in his career but he was a volume guy like most at that time.
Later on some old school guys did hitch onto the Bro splits because of the recovery & naturally at their age they needed that.
-

Their training was very sloppy and some did comment but Platz's cheating style was on another level altogether. His weights didn't always even move at all, he just kept contorting his body like he was trying to break it. The squats were beautiful though.
If you first look at Branch training and then watch Yates, it's like one is a child and the other is a maestro. ;D
-
I meant he praised squatting so much he consider it almost a different muscle group than legs. He did those crazy high rep squatting sessions only once a month.

I posted his routine from his leg training manual. Brutal.
Fortress says he exaggerated his squat weights a lot. Told Fortress his best was 51 reps with 315 iirc whereas he claimed 2 sets of 50 with 405 other times.

Rumor has it this is the only time Tom ever squatted

Best I ever managed was 21 with 195kg 430lbs Damn near killed me.
I can't put it down to being young & stupid I was in my 40's.

I have spent considerable time with Tom. Worked out with him, too.
I am feeling conflicted saying anything here at all, because Platz is one of my original muscle heroes, but with the passing years, it has become painfully obvious a great deal of his “ways” are … not so terrific.
In a number of ways I recognize his claims are not entirely accurate, either.

that is legit and crazy feat.
he did use a squat suit but it doesnt seem tight or restrictive much so I don't think it does help anything near todays suits.
-
that's fucking mental mate!
Ha - Thanks, Hmmm can't get close to that now.
Mind I did 107 reps with 100kgs about 3months back
No Not all in 1 one set think it was 5sets
was doing 1set max reps rest next set max reps & so on.
-
that is legit and crazy feat.
he did use a squat suit but it doesnt seem tight or restrictive much so I don't think it does help anything near todays suits.
It didn't even look that difficult for him.

Did you and Mr Platz share an apartment together? I heard Arnold did with Mr Graham in the 70’s

And proper deep squats - awesome.

I know Platz gets endless questions about how to squat "properly" when he just did what came naturally to his structure.
-
Rumor has it this is the only time Tom ever squatted
I thought Platz was awesome back in the early 80's. Of course all I had to form this opinion was pictures and articles. Later on in life, with the advent of the internet, I was exposed to more of his training, interviews, seminars, etc...
The guy was a nut job and really comes across as kind of dumb, I mean not illiterate or inarticulate, but Just a touch stupid. Different shit he's said over the years, citing Jonathan Livingston Seagull, his training style is simply idiotic, total gym idiot. Even this video he looks like a fool at the end when he forgets about the barbell right behind his head. There's no denying squatting 525 for 20 + reps is impressive, yet he still manages to look like an idiot.
-

Yeah, people think they'll grow thighs like Platz if they change their stance to be like his. ::)

I am 90% certain someone on ironage.us recall platz' best was 38 with 405.
Or, Platz wrote that somewhere.
I am really 90-95% certain: 37 or 38 reps with 405.
NOT 50, and NOT two sets.
-
He also claimed to have bought 180 lbs DBs to the gym for incline pressing. In his book he says he can do it for a handful of reps.
In a DVD from about 2008 he says he did it for 10 reps.
No photos or witness accounts of doing such heavy DBs...
I don't buy it.

Have you sqauted 525lbs for 20+ reps ATG full reps ?
You might just forget where you are with that amount of oxygen debt. ::)
It's very easy to throw stones & criticize if you haven't / can't do

I don't really care that he's exaggerated his lifts a bit. No doubt his squatting was very impressive nonetheless. A shame we don't have footage of him training when he was at his peak.
I liked the stories of him ritualising his lifting, you know small things like having certain items on him when lifting and so on. Maybe they were just stories, but I'd like to believe them :D
I don't know if he was a bit dumb as beakdoctor suspects, I don't think he said much too objectionable stuff. A lot of "deep" thinkers aren't really that deep or smart. Kai Greene is the prime example. Never says much tangible but meanders endlessly
It is interesting how he was always given a pass wrt his training style. I get why but it was just so outrageous. Someone else emulating his lifting would be thrown out of most gyms, maybe beaten. I do like the desperation aspect of the mentality, like you are really trying to overcome yourself mentally ;D
-

you're just bagging the guy for no good reason. You just come off as bitter for some reason.
we all heard him reference the Seagull book in Total Rebuild you don't know anything special so don't try... He was just referencing the philosophy in the book about the bird wanting to be unique and do something special. I can see thatc correlation. Why are you talking shit?
-
Bodybuilding is all about the illusion of size. Platz seems no different than the guys next to him in this pic:
-
Jonathan Livingston Seagull was a very popular and well-known book in the 70s.
A girl I was mad about at the time quoted from the book.

If you first look at Branch training and then watch Yates, it's like one is a child and the other is a maestro. ;D
hahahaha
Yates did have unmatched precision on his (non bicep) lifts, though.
There (used to be?)an article by Platz on the Tight Tan Slacks of Dezso Ban where he said he did high rep squats every other week. So he seems to have a lot of different squatting claims out there.
-
At my gym I’ve see a few casual lifting girls repping 405 for 4-6 reps easily, some serious weight and they weren’t competitors but have put in a lot of time

No. Never came close to ever squatting 500 lbs, even for 1 rep. Perfectly understandable reason to walk into an iron bar. Still looked goofy though.
Hey Maxx, My opinion is the guy came across as a kook. Surely you've seen his interviews. many are cringe worthy at best. Other times he just comes across as unreliable, giving totally different answers to the same questions from one year to the next. I mean, bitter? Come on, what the hell on earth do I have to be bitter about tom platz for? For better or for worse, everyone gets bagged on in this forum. it's not like this is the first time these things have been said about him. His training style was fucking retarded. Period. It's amazing he didn't injure himself more. Somehow he built a great body and got incredibly strong.
It's my opinion Platz in 81 is one of the most impressive bodies in bodybuilding history, I don't even think his upper body ever recieved enough credit, his chest and back were almost as impressive as his legs, also loved his Ride Like The Wind routine. However it is also my opinion that he is a kook.
BTW, Jonathan Livingston Seagull sucked. Yeah, it was a cultural phenomenon, it was also a punchline. The pet rock was a phenomenon too.
