Had a full knee replacement on my right knee 1 month ago today. Both of my knees have been really bad over the years, arthritis, bone on bone, etc. decided to get it over with, and do the first knee.
I have weighted 260-265 for over 30 years, been lifting forever. Still nice and strong, look strong, full, on TRT for over years. My life was good. Lifting, cooking, eating, enjoying the looks i still got at 265.
The knee replacement could have been the worst idea i ever had. The pain is almost unmanageable in the first week. I ate nothing, maybe 500 calories the first week. Nothing but pain pills. Fucking miserable. Walking with a walker, then a cane. My appetite never came back in the first two weeks. I stayed off of the scale, as I didn’t want to know my weight.
But looking in the mirror, i knew it would be bad, and it was. Finally stepped on the scale, 242. Fuck.
Started to try to eat, no real luck. Today, exactly 30 days after the operation, im at 240, with not a muscle on me. My arms are gone, flabby, chest is gone, i have shrunk right before my eyes.
And of course i caught the wife’s heavy cold, so im still not hungry.
So I guess my question is this? IS MUSCLE MEMORY A REAL THING?????? Will my muscles fill back out once i get into the gym? Will I start to gain some weight back at 67, when i restart my TRT?
Can i ever expect to be 260 again once i start hitting the gym full time? They always talk about muscle memory, but is it real, or just another of the WEIDER PRINCIPLES WE ALL FELL FOR?
Is it over for me, will 240 with no muscles be it for me?????
-
At 67, concentrate on getting healthy, agile, fit, etc...
You can do it, many have. 250+ at your age probably not a good idea...
We all have to face it some day...
-
Had second knee replacement in Feb 24. First one was a year prior. Its a tuff surgery but recoverable. I still have problems with knee tightness, etc. I am finally training legs again. But never like I used too. However, not sure why you cannot train your upper body with intensity. As far a eating. Of course you will have to adjust your dieting if you are no longer killing leg workouts. Be patient. We are the same age and nothing stays the same...

All my blood work comes back perfect at that weight. I’m very active walking, bike riding, treadmill. I just always was 260, after a short sickness, vacation, down a little, but always back to That weight.
I guess i will take it 1 pound at a time, day to day. Gotta get some meat in me, already bought protein powder, just waiting to put it all together.
-
I did manage two days in the gym last week, very light weights. Was hoping to get started this week, but this nasty cold killed that idea. Still having problems sleeping, very hard to fall asleep with the knee bending and trying to get comfortable.

Bloodwork, not all its cracked up to be. Good to have it done, but many are fooled into thinking they are perfect if bloods are.
I know a few, perfect bloods, no history of drugs, booze or anabolic. still had bypass surgery, etc.

An honest #242 is still big as heck for a regular person, let alone a 67 year old. My advice would be to learn to be happy at it. Realistically there is probably some muscle memory there, but is the juice worth the squeeze at 67?
-
How tall are you??
240 is lot of weight .
Focus on recovery and don’t chase the weight at your age .Health before ego.Yes muscle memory is a real thing .I was able to gain almost all my size back after having few months break.
-
I wanted a replacement rather than what they mushed back together. Said I was too young for a replacement. Judging by the stories I've heard and read: it was probably for the best. I just assumed once your new knee is in place, the pain, mobility and flexibility is just there and it's problem solved. How ignorant I was...
Sorry about your situation. Mine was a tibial plateau fracture along with a few other minor bits they had to reattach. The pain was so bad that they were using ketamine instead of morphine to knock me out for any movement. I didn't realise how bad the pain is when your knee goes.
Like others have suggested, you ought to just focus on living healthy and maybe try to slim down and trim up. Not saying that to piss you off but you need to preserve your joints and being heavy at that age is asking for faster deterioration.

Good luck! I had my hip replaced in 2020.I am 65 now and train hard on everything except no more squats.I work my legs but with other exercises.Best wishes

This is my technique, now. Machine work for legs rather than squats. Sticking to volume work

I’m not a juicer, just TRT at 75 mgs a week. I have not done any legs for years, just did upper body. When i did train legs i got 405 for one set of 20 reps, almost killed me. And was always around 560-580 in my powerlifting meets.
Probably didn’t help my knees in the long run.
-
You don't see a lot of 265-lb 80-year-olds walking around, regardless of how much is fat vs. muscle.

Where have I heard this before?
Judochoke can be mistaken for a lot of people -
CSwol's brother, Joe from Reservoir Dogs, stuntman Robert Tessier, etc..... -
(http://www.getbig.com/boards/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=132574.0;attach=147737;image).
But he is way healthier than the other guy.

Partial knee replacement in 2022. Was squatting 155 about 5 - 6 weeks after. Can do everything with my knee that I want. (1:45 400m, 270# front squat, full squat cleans, squat snatch, box jumps, etc)
The keys to coming back from it :
1) Find someone trained by Dr Burger (sp?) who pioneered a minimally invasive procedure
2) Do 6 weeks of rehab PRIOR to surgery
3) Force that fucker to bend asap. I was at 130deg flexion at 8 weeks
4) Keep massaging the scar and vastus medialis muscle multiple times a week
5) Keep up with the knees over toes guy exercises
-
Almost got into a fight with CSWOL at my gym one day. We both acted up, face to face, ready to go, when we both calmed down at the same time. Good friends after that, I enjoyed talking to him. Used to go to the olympias in Las Vegas, had a whole crew. We would bring ice chests full of rolling rock beer, drink in the parking lot, inside the convention. Had a blast, Dave would always find us for a free ice cold rolling rock beer.
Judo a little thicker now.
-
Yes, i saw my friend who also had a partial knee done. Does not sound like the same operation. He had hardly no pain at all. I had a total.
-
Sorry to hear it judochoke......wishing you a full recovery brother.
-
Reducing your bodyweight is what you should do to reduce knee problems.
Carrying a heavy bodyweight just aggravates knee issues.

I have lost 81+ lbs since my multiple heart attacks. My physicians said to lose it as your heart doesn't care if it's fat or muscle. I have trouble now with 5lb. DBs and can only train once in a while now. I am older than you and am not on HRT as my doctors said even thought my level is very low, I am NOT a candidate right now.
As someone else said here, train for your health as best you can. I will not tell someone how to train because I know that we all have an ego, mine is the biggest thing left of me, LOL! I am fortunate/blessed to still be here so I am trying to do as the doctors tell me. Of course it doesn't help that they all look pretty wimpy, LOL!
One of my brothers had his knees replaced. When he had the first one done he cried like a baby about the pain and swore he would never do the other leg. Within the first week after surgery he felt great and then down the road he had the other knee replaced along with a hip and some shoulder repair. I am supposed to have my right shoulder totally replaced in about 9 or so months. I have seen it and if I could feel pain, I know that I would be looking forward to the surgery. I (usually) don't feel it so I am doing okay until they can get to me. Apparently it is a very popular surgery for seasoned citizens. ;D I was told the recovery period at my age is approx 2.5 years per shoulder. Yuck. That worries me a lot.
All the best to you in your recovery!
-
Thanks you my man. Leaving now to get out of the house, getting a nasty tasty burger and fries. Then stop at my favorite donut place for a donut and a de-caf coffee. Going to jump start my metabolism

Muscle memory is real.

not the same. The partial is a lot easier to recover from. A lot less trauma because they only replace the parts that need to be not the total joint.
-
BTW. I am now getting ready for shoulder replacement which I am not looking forward too. Good luck, keep training and enjoy your health...

I will throw in my advices.
When you say you are on TRT is it the low dose a general practitioner would prescribe or are you dosing vials of test you get on the black market? If you are taking a lot going off it could contribute to the loss. Having a knee replaced is a huge trauma to your body so of course you are going to be weak after.
You will need time. At 67 you shouldn't want to be big. Getting lean should be the goal. Very few big old men.
When I had an operation my motto was, It's a good thing the weights are adjustable. Come back using baby weights and very gradually increase. Take care of that new knee and forget anything that could damage or shorten the life of it. My 2 cents is to not leg press, squat or deadlift. Upper body you can crush it but lower body do stuff like body weight squats, lunges and maybe goblet squats for higher reps. Walking fast will be your friend now when you heal. Go outside or on a treadmill. At 67 your heart muscle should be a priority. No senior citizen lifter should be concerned with being big. It just makes for a heavy coffin.
-
260 + lbs at 67yrs. LoL massively delusional dude.
You are fat plain and simple, at 242 you are still fat. You are not the muscle hunk you seem to think you are at either of those weights
Wake up at clean up to around 225 of actual muscle and loose the safety fat suit.
-
It’s prescribed by my doctor. All legit, one shot a week. 75 mgs. I’m done with legs, and have been for years. Just do upper body and cardio. I just want to be able to walk my two dogs every day. Of course im not an ego lifter or ego person, i did that shit in my 30s. I just had two expensive tests done on my heart ordered from my cardiologist. All clear on both tests.
Do i really need to be 260? I don’t really know, as i have always been that weight, and was comfortable
In my daily life at that weight.
I guess i will just let the chips land as they do, when i get back into hard core training. Thanks for all the reply’s. Judo

I agree go for a much more fit and lighter bodyweight.
Getting old an`t for sissies, and at your weight you should not be thinking heavy weight....you should focus more on being healthy.
Not trying to bust your balls or piss on your parade, but your organs have to work much harder at a heavier weight, and like I ALWAYS say sometimes......."You Can`t Flex Fat"
Good luck in whatever you decide and I hope you make a full recovery.
-
The wear on your knees were due to your excessive bodyweight. 240 is still heavy for your height. Focus on being and looking fit instead of permabulking. You will add years to your body.
Yes muscle memory is a thing and so is sarcopenia.

I can not stress this enough you need to start biking as in cycling on a bike peddling is the best thing you can do for that knee. You can absolutely regain your muscle memory is a real thing. But fuck the muscle focus on the knee you cant get big if you cant walk
People will laugh and make fun but the recumbent trike is the best thing ever for your knee

At the very first sign of osteoarthritis in my knees at age 47 I made the decision to go from an Arnoldesque 244 lbs to 167 lb. Bruce Lee physique. I can still remember the doctor shooting my knees up that day with cortisone, telling me eventually I'm looking at total knee replacements. I asked if there was any other way. He told me to a.) Lose a ton of weight and b.) Work on strengthening the calves, hamstrings and glutes in addition to the quads, and I just might get out of the surgery. So I began a super strict diet and started doing lots and lots of cardio on the exercise bike. (Running was out of the question due to the knee pain). I kept lifting and really hit the core hard. Not only did the knee pain all but disappear but I also was relieved of some sciatic nerve pain. Psychologically it was difficult at first to deal with the loss of size, but another phenomenon developed whereby when I remove my shirt (on the beach for example) the world seems to stop and stare at my chiseled, defined Bruce Lee physique. The abs, intercostals, serratus, are all carved out of granite. The sexual attention I get from the ladies is one hundred fold what it was with my Arnold physique. I am now in my late 50s now and look to be in my 30s with little to no knee pain.

Yes, i saw my friend who also had a partial knee done. Does not sound like the same operation. He had hardly no pain at all. I had a total.
I know a few who had total and they recovered like mine. With a total, there is nothing left of the bad joint. How long did you go for PT?

not the same. The partial is a lot easier to recover from. A lot less trauma because they only replace the parts that need to be not the total joint.
Sure there is less trauma....but a full replacement there is nothing left of the damaged joint. Same size scar...etc. Now, if you talk about replacing the knee cap along with that....yeah, there is some issues.

Brother why in the blue hell would you want to be 260lbs at age 67? If it were me I’d go back to a true replacement dosage 50mg twice a week and then dial in via bloods and hit the BPC-157 and TB500 and work on building true strength make use of resistance bands over heavy weights and in general stop acting like I were 25.
-
Slim down, brother! Each additional pound of bodyweight is around 40lbs of pressure at your knees. You will feel and move around much better at a lighter bodyweight.

I’ve heard each pound is equivalent to 25lb’s of pressure by a couple doctors, but not 40lb’s.
Either way losing the weight is going to be an enormous help.
And TBH you look quite sloppy at that weight and will look way better dropping 25-30lb’s.
-
An article I posted above says when you walk each step is 1.5 times bodyweight.
If you weigh 260 each step impact is close to 400 lbs.

This is a powerful testimony, doc, and I can't thank you enough for sharing it. If you may, could you delve a little deeper into the psychology of sexual attraction? Specifically, how arousal often manifests itself in the behaviours of the women around you. I would love to read about this. Merci beaucoup.

This thread reminds me of a guy i trained with & he was a fanatical cardio freak, serious stuff.
He now lives in Denmark but visited me just over a year ago.
When i trained with him he had, had at least 2 knee operations because of his running..etc
I saw him one time 2 or 3 weeks after a knee OP trying to walk or jog dragging his leg :-\
when he last visited me he had a lower back OP & was told a 2nd was on the way because of his running, of course i know he ended up with the 2nd OP even though he´s not been in contact.

judochoke, no offense brother but there is a bit of cognitive dissonance between "I've always been 260 lbs and have always been comfortable at that weight" and "I just had a knee replacement". At 67 it's time to slim down!

why do you want to be 260 at 67 ??? asking for a heart attack
you should aim for 220 actually
-
All my blood work comes back perfect at that weight. I’m very active walking, bike riding, treadmill. I just always was 260, after a short sickness, vacation, down a little, but always back to That weight.
I guess i will take it 1 pound at a time, day to day. Gotta get some meat in me, already bought protein powder, just waiting to put it all together.
Let's hope you got that protein from Walmart buddy! (High five) While you're there, check out the fall clothes. Good deals and no one can tell you got them from Walmart. Oh; you will gain your muscle back. Muscle memory's real. I'm a lifetime natural and I lost everything when I had umbilical hernia surgery in my mid 50's but I was able to put back on my size. Took awhile but it happened. You got this!

Thanks sweet daddy. That’s what I’m hoping for.

Go on a strict diet of fruits and veggies, lean proteins, whole grains, healthy fats, etc Do lots of steady state cardio. Lower the bodyweight by any means necessary. Get on blood pressure meds, a statin, and daily low dose aspirin. Weight training is fine but if you're obese you need to prioritize getting lean.
-
Judochoke did you ever train in Judo? I did as a kid but my mother wanted me out thinking it was too rough right when I was getting good.

This is a powerful testimony, doc, and I can't thank you enough for sharing it. If you may, could you delve a little deeper into the psychology of sexual attraction? Specifically, how arousal often manifests itself in the behaviours of the women around you. I would love to read about this. Merci beaucoup.
So he's basically dj181 with abs.

As an adult I boxed and did BJJ. Truth be told I wasn't very good in BJJ. I'm more of a striker. I really admire those that are good in the grappling arts like wrestling, judo and BJJ. My son in law is about 6'4" and 300lbs. He takes his BJJ training seriously. He keeps telling me to get back into it. Nope, I don't want to wrestle smelly, sweating guys who are out to arm bar me or choke me, lol.

I retired from powerlifting at age 40, and took a judo class at a gym near me. I was hooked. After two months at the small gym, i joined two real judo clubs, and would go about 4 days a week. I was always the oldest guy in the class, but it was a great workout, and once i learned how to fall, l did not get hurt.
When i would go to the local tournaments, i was always the oldest guy there. In the beginning, i would have to go with teenagers, or white belts my size, as there were not many bigger guys. In japan, a black belt is the real deal. But in the states, it’s really just a fun way to learn self defense. In japan, a black belt can do all 19 throws left handed and right handed. But in the states, nobody but the pros could do that.
I did get a ceremonial black belt at age 42, which was cool. But now i was in the black belt bracket for the tournaments, and i always got smoked. lol but it was a blast. Got into BJJ, but i was too stiff heavy for bjj.
I did help my master get ready for a fight in japan for a few weeks, that was hard core. But he got knocked out in the first round in his pride fight. FRANSICO BUENO WAS HIS NAME. IGOR KNOCKED HIM OUT.
IM IN ORANGE COUNTRY.

Alright, Big Boss 💪, I will break it down for you! I am not sure whether your ego will let you get it or not!
Your muscles were in a sarcoplasmic hypertrophy state before—full of glycogen, water, and some fat. This gave you that big, full look you liked, but much of the size came from glycogen and water, not just muscle. That's why, now, you’ve lost size—what you’ve mostly lost is water and glycogen, not as much muscle as you think. Stuff yourself with "good food" and pump again, and sure, you’ll feel bigger, but it’s mostly a temporary water-glycogen boost, not raw muscle mass.
Look at Mr. "O" Canada, Vince—he’s rocking "solid" 18-inch arms at 79, and they feel like granite when flexed, but most of that tightness comes from loading up on carbs and holding water. It’s easy to get caught up in that feeling, but you’ve gotta be careful—at 67, chasing that glycogen-filled bulk is just putting unnecessary stress on your body. Time to take it easy on the ego, focus on leaner, healthier gains, and let the heart and body thank you later. 😎

I also did boxing and BJJ. After age 30 it's probably best to quit combat sports. Everyone I know who stuck with them is suffering now.

Brutal if true video of Bueno getting faceplanted by the fat Russian Igor. Death stare and all:
(Serious note) That was a bad knockout. Bueno didn't seem to have decent striking skills.
The problem with Judo is the same problem that caught up with Rousey: Gotta grab your opponent while not getting punched in the face. People have caught on to that now. If you're a fair or decent striker like that new girl Kayla (judo Olympic champ in UFC now) then you can implement Judo.
On a related note, I was walking down a mall once and this Asian guy comes out of GNC a few feet in front of me. At the same time these 3 black guys were walking by. One of them collided with the Asian guy. The black guy went into a rage and yelled and started swinging. The Asian grabbed him and did the quickest and most powerful osoto gari on him. The mall floor had carpet or he would have been killed because his head hit the floor and he didn't get up. I had to talk to the police since I was a witness. Officer didn't charge anyone and said "I think he learned his lesson" about the black guy.

I got my blue belt in BJJ and stopped. I should go back. I got it in my 50's and I'm 58. I think I did well. Seemed natural to me. My problem were the high school wrestlers. Older wrestlers not so much and fun to roll with but the high school wrestlers were way too quick. Them: "Hey - you wanna go again?" Me: "Nah I'm fine"

No, sarcoplasmic and myofribrillar hypertrophies are interconnected.
In muscle cells, each nucleus has a well-defined cytoplasmic domain. Hypertrophied muscles or not, the nucelo-cytoplasmic ratio remains unchanged - it's a physiological constant.
The more nuclei the muscle gains, the more expansion there will be in the cytoplasm, which goes against the "theory" of sarcoplasmic hypertrophy.

I only had 5 fights in the ring. All gym fights. I was 4-1. The loss was my first fight. I got out early realizing getting punched wasn't fun. That's why I'm still pretty. ;D
Regarding his lost of strength and muscle of course anyone would have a loss. That's a major orthopedic surgery. On top of it he went off testosterone. No, test and the physical trauma of that operation would break anyone. Judo, I think all are in agreement that for health reasons you should train but at a lighter bodyweight. The worst thing you could do is increase the dose to look good for vanity and ego to just walk around the supermarket. Lift but pay attention and give equal weight to cardio conditioning. Far to many 65 plus guys if they run for a half a mile feel like they are going to die. Those are the ones that will have heart problem with the low VO2. I realize with the bad knee running is out but walking fast or riding a bike, swimming or fast walking will work.
-
I’m 5-11. It’s funny, as i just gave my gym buddy the TALK, he’s 35, 6-2, juiced up big time. When we get food, people get out of his way. He looks crazy when he takes tren. So I asked him one day, WHATS YOUR END GAME WITH THE JUICE?????? YOU DONT COMPETE, YOUR JUST A GYM RAT, WANTING TO LOOK BIG AND CRAZY, HOW LONG WILL YOU BE JUICING???????????
He was totally caught off guard by my question. To make a long story short, he quit all the other stuff, except test and deca, downsized, lost 15 pounds, and is very happy. Still gets attention, but is healthier.
You guys have given me a lot to think about as i rehab. And i know that at age 67, i would have to downsize at sometime!!!!!!!! But i was wearing 3 x under armour shirts, and they were tight on me!!!!!!
My prescription from my doctor is only 75 mgs of TEST A WEEK,and the wife will not give me any extra, so that is what i will be using. I know how to train intensive, as that’s how i train for over 40 years.
Hopefully the muscle comes back, and at 241 today on the scale, i will look for 250 to hit for my weight.
I would imagine that when i hit the gym starting Monday, i should regain the 9 pounds pretty quickly, then i will just maintain that weight, see how i feel.
Thank you all for all of the food for thought. Judochoke.
(We never saw FRANSICO BUENO AGAIN AFTER THAT KNOCKOUT. HE NEVER CAME BACK FROM JAPAN, HE WENT RIGHT TO BRAZIL, PROBALLY TO HIDE. NO SHAME, AS IGOR WAS A GREAT FIGHTER

My main point was, when you work out, and stuft yourself with carbs, your muscles will have a rounder appearance, that is more visible when you chase the pump.
Cut calories and stop pump those reps and you are left with much flabby physique if you are not lean at the first place.
Actually judochoke has tons ot muscle and solid base, but still at 35 percent bf he was nowhere buff as he imagined, and i think he is wise enough to see that, but his ego isn't :(
-
why do you want to be 260 at 67 ??? asking for a heart attack
you should aim for 220 actually
Guy is a fucking fool trying to maintain that weight. Dead by the time he needs his next knee replacement.

If you are back in the gym after only a month I'd say your doing very well.

Or a Trike get a godamn Trike. This is the best thing you can do for your knees and heart. A lot of guys get back pain from regular bikes as well or wrist and forearm pain not on this. You want knee movement without impact this is the ticket, and you can adjust the gears for resistance tuning.

Was reading about recovery from total knee replacement and it can be a bitch.
If you are back in the gym after only a month I'd say your doing very well.
Many go back to the gym right after. It really is going to depend on a variety of factors:
1) were you fit or a "slob" prior to the surgery
2) Did you do PT PRIOR to the surgery
3) Diligence in doing home PT in between the PT visits
4) Continued work on the legs after you're cleared
I know quite a few masters competitors in crossfit with TKR that recovered fast.

You look fantastic, easily and I mean EASILY one of the most impressive physiques of anyone over 60 I’ve seen. Palumbo couldn’t even look you in the eye. Did he ask you if you use GH?
I think 250 would be simple for you and with your monster frame I could see you holding 270/280 at 10% if you add some pharmacy gh at 3-5iu a day. Keep test below 150. Tell your wife she better not hold out on that extra shot or she’s gonna get bhanked

Cycling or walking is best for older guys especially after knee or lower back operations.
Overdoing it is just as harmful as not doing anything.

260 lbs = 118 kilos. At just 5 ft 11 or 180 cm that is seriously obese.
No wonder you encountered knee problems with such a high bodyweight.
As advised before slim down to 180 lbs or 82 kilos max.

Far to much Body Fat in that clip - could lose a good 30lbs+
and still have some spare.
What's with the Most Fatular pose - sorry that is just a blob of fat.
Lose fat & be more muscular & you'll look much better.

One way to slim down is to buy a $4,000 recumbent bike and ride it around your neighborhood for a couple miles a week.
In addition to weight loss your knees will become like steel.

Correct. It took a lot of dieting and cardio to take my 240 lb Arnoldesque physique down to 167 lbs of Bruce Lee style rippedness. I lost a good amount of strength throughout the weight loss transformation. Then I had to start from scratch benching 135 all over again and build up 350, while maintaining the 167 lb bodyweight. I eliminated osteoarthritis of the knees and brought my blood pressure down to 117/70. Truth be told though it's the sheer volume of pussy I get at this weight that keeps me from bulking ever again. Sometimes I feel like a Human Sex Buffet for cougars and milfs..

405 for 2 real reps and a couple of assisted reps after the first two. But here's the thing: no broad has ever asked me how much I can bench. They do, however, take great pleasure in running their hands over my "carved out of granite" abs. The serratus are definitely a party starter.

No, you did not. You brought inflammation down. Osteophytes and enthesophytes are not reversible like that

No offense intended here judochoke, you seem like a good fella, just being real: from that Muscle Beach vid you clearly have some serious strength but you're just straight-up fat. 200 is a much better target at 67 than 250.

bhanks has added 40 pounds of muscle already, nice. The bulk is off to a hot start.

405 for 2 real reps and a couple of assisted reps after the first two. But here's the thing: no broad has ever asked me how much I can bench. They do, however, take great pleasure in running their hands over my "carved out of granite" abs. The serratus are definitely a party starter.

So healthy that you shit yourself for a week after telling everyone that HGH cured your stomach ailments. Then you "dislocate" your shoulder doing shrugs and run like a pussy to urgent care

You said dislocated for shoulder. How healthy is your digestive system to be shitting every 5 minutes for a week? Maybe you should have gone with 56iu of HGH?

Personally I believe he under dosed on the GH & should've
taken a minimum of 106iu to achieve optimal results

Just getting healthy again and I lifted 3-4 times last week
As far as judo goes while his desire to bulk and add 25lbs at 67 is admirable he isn't super lean Cutler looks much leaner in the pics and is lighter and bigger. But if Judo wants to bulk that is his prerogative. I would say get lean first as 240 is plenty of size. Stay there and train.

Healthy can mean different things if my digestive tract is working and I am eating that is healthy to me. That doesn't mean I am not dealing with injuries. Once I am healthy it still takes a couple weeks of injury free training to be full strength. Full strength and healthy are not the same thing I can be healthy without being full strength
-

Well do you count last week as the 7 days prior or Monday-Sunday? I am actually really good with numbers. But I train alone I don't usually count reps I train close to failure whatever reps that may be 2 more or less than planned. But I am focusing on lifting not counting.

People are forgetting the one of the most important aspects to knee rehab and I've been saying it for years. Posterior chain work with emphasis on hamstrings and knee flexion (ROM to 130+ as Krank said) asap. Walking, cycling are all fine but if you're still quad dominant you're still going to have knee issues. Hamstrings are a flexor to the knee as is a bicep to the elbow.
For a knee rehab just getting back into the gym, I concentrate on a ton of TKE's (terminal knee extention) with a band then move to PC work.

Absolutely Joe...the amount of quad dominant people with overactive hip flexors is incredible. The amount of people who come into my office that can't do a damn air squat is ridiculous.
People shit on slider, KB, and band work. Just getting down into a squat and holding 10# plate in front of you for :30 is going to do wonders. I sit in a squat (loaded, not just butt relaxed) with a 15# plate for :45 seconds just as some active mobility
-

Why not just do paused rep squats when you warm up with like 135lbs or do you think even lighter paused reps are important? How do KB help the knees?

Why not just do paused rep squats when you warm up with like 135lbs or do you think even lighter paused reps are important? How do KB help the knees?
The point of this movement is to prep you for the type of squat you're going to do....front, back, etc. I would bet Joe can back this up and say the people that prep their knees, hips and low back are the ones who have a lower incidence of injury. Just jumping under 135# is NOT a warm up
1) Holding the plate in front of you (pulling shoulder blades down, sticking chest out) primes the mid back for loading. Holding the plate out at arms length is not as easy as you think (provided you are doing this properly).
2) You can also rock side to side, over each ankle priming the ankle joint. One of the things that will limit people in a back squat is ankle mobility. Once the limit in ankle flexion is met, then body will use more hip flexion and force the hips back (folding the person over)
3) KB question is too vague. I will offer this....grab a KB (somewhat heavy), find something to sit on that is lower then your squat depth. Place the KB on top of one knee, then drive that knee forward, over the foot pressing the heel down. Forward, back, out to each side for :30 - :60 sec. Then do other side and examine how your squat is.

That doesnt make much sense
What about the KB for shoulders what the fuck does swinging a kettle ball do? Is that good for shoulder mobility? I need to work on shoulder mobility so I can overhead press again someday. I also need stability in the shoulder. Basically I need better rotator cuff movement on both sides
I was actually thinking of getting some medicine balls or atlas stones and some kettleballs as figure would be a good way to train the kid as well I was wondering if swining kettelballs would be good or bad for shoulders
Thinking I may get a sled for legs and do some backward walking stuff
-

What does it do for shoulders? You only think of your shoulders moving in a linear direction. Up-down...be it in front of you or out to the side. Loading the shoulder and swinging forces the scap to stabilize the shoulder plus you get the benefit of throwing in posterior chain work. Single arm KB swings also help build stability. Doing some light swings prior to pressing work is a good way of warming the shoulders up.
What is the point of medicine balls or atlas stones for you? If anything, get sand bags. greyfit.com is a great place for them. Reverse engineered the rogue bags. Want to build low back and midline strength? Start to try and hold a sandbag for time in bear hug position. Again, not as easy as you think.
Both SC and I have repeatedly told you that sled work for knees are incredible. You poo-poo'd it as 'sweating to the oldies' shit.....but in any event. You don't have to max on sleds. Reverse sled pulls (either holding handles or with belt) is an incredible thing to warm up the posterior chain before training lower body.

Everytime i read your posts, some ailment striked you, due to your competitive bodybuilding endeavours. Maybe you are not built for heavy lifting and/or competitions? No shame in that. What about take your focus elsewhere, and live healthier?
