Surveillance photos from outside the Midtown hotel where a UnitedHealthcare CEO was fatally shot show the moment the masked assailant pulled out his gun to kill his target.
The images, provided to The Post by law enforcement sources, show the suspect, who has yet to be identified, holding a long handgun as he fired at Brian Thompson, 50, on Wednesday morning outside the Hilton Hotel on 54th and 6th Ave.
The suspect fired multiple times from a distance, police said, before fleeing through the Ziegfeld alleyway and hopping on a bike.
Given that a) medical bills are the leading cause of bankruptcy in the US and b) there are 1.2 guns for every US citizen, I’m surprised this hasn’t happened more often.

So this guy is a hero?

Good for him.

I read the headline on a financial news site and thought: Ah, the usual NYC crime insanity. But it seems a deliberate assassination.
Agree that it's suprising it does not happen more often.
Imagine the families who lost a son or parent due to Boeings extreme cost cutting making 737 Max's crash. That the Boeing execs who are responsible are still alive is baffling to me

I like how they only reveal skin color when its whitey.. LOL ::)
The suspect was described as a white male wearing a coat, black face mask, and black and white sneakers.
Officials said he was carrying a gray backpack.

So this guy is a hero?
Absolutely. He was a true company man right to the end. By dying before reaching the ER, he even managed to boost shareholder profits. If only more healthcare CEOs could follow his lead...
;D
-
I don’t know who he is or if he’s a bad guy, but is there a chance this is a watershed moment for things like this? Will he be looked back on like a Franz Ferdinand, that something bigger happened as a result?

"ASSASSINATION: Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare had been under investigation by the DOJ for insider trading. He reportedly exercised stock options and sold shares worth $15.1 million shortly before news of an antitrust probe became public."
^ Latest on twitter. I listened to the press conference, seems their biggest leads are/were the Citybike and the backpack. They lost him in Central Park. My guess is the backpack had a change of clothes, he dipped into the park, changed, then left.

The Welrod pistol, used for assassinations during WWII and later. Another option is regular silenced pistol, and the rounds didn't have enough power to cycle the action.

How do we change the system if not violence? Government regulation on prices doesn't seem to be on the table.

Killing a CEO isn't going to stop it, that's for sure. Maybe a full-on revolution. If this shit keeps up a day will come when that happens.
It's fucked up. I have a friend who worked for Bayer for years. He tells me the same prescription drugs are sold much cheaper in other countries.
Didn't we have some bill 15 years or so ago that would allow generic drugs to be sold in the US and it got voted down?
-
I don’t know who he is or if he’s a bad guy, but is there a chance this is a watershed moment for things like this? Will he be looked back on like a Franz Ferdinand, that something bigger happened as a result?
An increase in surveillance like other countries most likely.

Very true, you can buy legit pharma meds in many countries for 10% of what they cost here, or even less.
The big pharma and oil companies line the pockets of our politicians.
Nothing will change anytime soon. It's a huge racket.

I agree, it's like the number of guns in this country isn't what the determining factor is, it's the people.
It's not like we have guns just flying around in space murdering people.
With how easy it is to obtain a firearm; you would think there would be much more violence.
At least if you understand statistics.

CHICAGO – In an unprecedented move, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield plans representing Connecticut, New York and Missouri have unilaterally declared it will no longer pay for anesthesia care if the surgery or procedure goes beyond an arbitrary time limit, regardless of how long the surgical procedure takes. The American Society of Anesthesiologists calls on Anthem to reverse this proposal immediately.

Geez. ??? ??? ??? Basically, once the surgery goes past X time limit, the patient will be responsible.
A recent policy change by health insurer Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) has led to sharp criticism from the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), who warn that the decision could jeopardize patient safety and increase financial strain on both patients and providers.
The proposed new policy will no longer reimburse anesthesia services for the complete duration of certain surgical procedures, opting instead for a partial coverage model, and the head of the ASA has called it "appalling" and "egregious," creating a precarious situation for patients undergoing surgery.
Anthem BCBS said plans representing Connecticut, New York, and Missouri have unilaterally declared they will no longer pay for anesthesia care if the surgery or procedure goes beyond an arbitrary time limit, regardless of how long the surgical procedure takes, reported the ASA, who has condemned the decision and called on Anthem to reverse this proposal immediately.

9.8 million $ a year pay check. !! That might be a wee bit excessive :o
-
Corporate accountability, like others surprised it doesn't happen more often appreciate thats harsh, but these guys have done their fair share of ruining lives, they use their government protected market positions and corporate balance sheets to crush small medium businesses each and every day and that's without what they do to their customers.

Incorrect we need more free market in health care to reduce cost not price controls. The reason prices are through the roof is because there is no upfront pricing and competition. You don't know what you are going to pay before you sign up for care. If you knew the different cost at the different hospitals in advance you might pick the cheaper option. Instead, you don't care as they dont disclose up front and insurance covers it so you pay no attention as they charge you a thousand dollars to sleep in a cot for a night.

You couldn't be more wrong. They don't disclose because people don't ask. People don't pay attention because they haven't been taught.
1) Always ask if they have verified if the hospital AND the surgeon are in-network and the procedure requires pre-auth
2) Always ask if they have verified that the procedures are going to be covered. If they give you some line about how they don't know what the surgeon/doctor wants to perform tell them to find out. Its not like that doctor/surgeon hasn't performed the procedure before (they should be able to tell you what CPT codes will be billed)
3) Call you own insurance company and ask about your deductible and copay/coinsurance along with the CPT codes. Ask if any of those require pre-authorization
4) AbrahamG is correct in that comment about profit. Insurance companies are TOTALLY for profit. A few years ago I believe it was Aetna that was busted for immediately denying ALL claims no matter what just to see who would fight for their money
5) There's no competition pricing. It is all based on YOUR insurance company. There is something called 'reasonable and customary' fees. They vary from company to company....not hospital to hospital or office to office. What I get paid from BCBS is different than what I get paid by UHC / Aenta / Medicare / UMR / Ambetter / Amita/Etc. So when you bitch about how much 'you' get charged. Talk to your insurance company about how much they feel each procedure is worth to them NOT the facility. They aren't making up the costs...your insurance carrier does.
6) AFTER any procedure, look at your EOB's (explanation of benefits). Look at the procedures that were done. If you do not understand it, call the hospital/office. Explain to them what each thing is if you need to. That is YOUR right. DO NOT focus on what is billed. The 'allowed' amount is what you are concerned with (see below). Providers/facilities bill way above what is allowed because they have to have ONE fee schedule across the board otherwise it could be construed as 'fee splitting'. Look at how much less they are paying for the 72100 code. If that procedure code was billed out of network, the reimbursement would be so much higher.
-
Supply and Demand the government can not control prices
The government should take steps to create greater competition between health insurance companies. Currently, these companies operate almost as monopolies, with no oversight or accountability. When people need care, insurers implement blanket policies to deny coverage, forcing individuals to navigate a burdensome process just to access the care they need. This reduces costs for insurers, as they know people will give up rather than endure the extra hassle. To insulate themselves insurers outsource preauthorization processes to third parties, creating additional barriers while shielding themselves from legal repercussions. They hire lobbyists to get corrupt politicians to block efforts to allow competition across state lines. It is a scumbag industry.

Very very true. It took me 10 days to get a pre-auth for a patient to get an MRI. It shouldn't take that long. His PCP couldn't get it done, so I did.
UHC actually is a BIG culprit of 'fee capping'. No matter what is done by the provider, you are capped for what is re-imbursed. They claim it is to help save costs for their subscribers. Bullshit. People need some things done and they can't get their company to reimburse and then have to pay that cost out of their pocket and then bitch at the provider.
Evicore is the WORST when it comes to pre-auth. Optum health is a close second.

I don’t really think that’s him, but it doesn’t matter. The guy was last traced to an interstate bus terminal a few days ago so he most likely got off scot-free. The police only hope at this point is that someone recognizes him and turns him in.

You have a loved one died because a procedure that could save their life got denied because of the 'restrictions' and 'rules' that are put in place by some suit who isn't a medical professional, gets paid millions for saving the company money every with their cut backs on care.

You have a loved one died because a procedure that could save their life got denied because of the 'restrictions' and 'rules' that are put in place by some suit who isn't a medical professional, gets paid millions for saving the company money every with their cut backs on care.
Tell me you wouldn't want the same thing....or are you the "let the legal system handle it" type?
Also, murdered in cold blood? You think this guy was snow white?
Im not defending healthcare. Ive had relatives pass away from all sorts of ailments that they didn't have the money, education or insurance to treat. And No, it never once occured to me to murder an insurance exec.
Yes. Cold blood. Shooting an unsuspecting person in the back is cold blood.
Whether or not he was snow white is irrelevant. Im not hearing any other motive other than the professional job he held. He was running a business. Like all businesses his success looked at dollars and sense. Of course he's not a medical professional, he's a businessman. You wouldn't have a plastic surgeon run a multi billion dollar corporation anymore than youd have a CEO perform open heart surgery. he was essentially murdered for the job he was doing. At his level (CEO) he wasn't approving or denying individual claims. Hes not an insurance agent. And if he was its still not going to change anything at all about healthcare in this country.
This guy could've worked for any company. If he took the same cost cutting, budgeting and economic policies at Ford Motor Co., Kroger Co. Heinz co. Unilever etc... you wouldn't think he deserved to be gunned down in an ambush.
Yeah, its unpleasant. Insurance companies- whether auto, home or health, fuck people over every single day. That still doesn't make the coward who ambushed him from behind a hero.

First I don't put much faith in the legal system these days.
But 2nd, what exactly would "the legal system" be handling? No, I wouldn't expect "the legal system" to provide me insurance. Thats why I worked in a field for 27 years that provided insurance benefits for me and my family.
The only thing i expect the legal system to handle in this case is the objective prosecution of an assassin. Not prosecution based on negative feelings around the insurance industry. But whether or not the evidence proves who the shooter is and whether or not it was justified (which it clearly isn't)

He is ultimately responsible for his company's actions, the same faceless entity that denies healthcare claims. Insurance companies operate with impunity, denying care and hiding behind third party preauthorization services when lives are lost as a result. They face no consequences for these actions and, in fact, profit from them. While killing the man isn’t legally justifiable, it’s not hard to understand the anger that led to it.

Yes. I understand what insurance is and how healthcare works, ive paid for it for the past 36 years of my life. Im not defending 'healthcare' It should be illegal but it isnt.
Its called Capitalism. We live in a deomcratic capitalistic republic.
Do you support anarchy and communism too. Leon Czogolz is a hero too? Gavril Princip as well I suppose? And free national healthcare ? Must be a great idea too?
What Im saying is the shooter is a coward. His protest against people dying due to inequities in systemic healthcare is to cowardly ambush this one guy. Not a hero.

It’s not true capitalism. Insurance companies aren’t held accountable for their denials of care. In a real free market system, they’d face consequences for withholding care, but they don’t. They manipulate the system to eliminate competition across state lines. They impose restrictive rules that only allow plan changes at certain times of the year. On top of that, most people’s choices are limited to whatever their employers offer. I’m sure you already know all this. But, it’s frustrating to see CEOs hide behind the banner of “capitalism” when the health insurance industry isn’t operating in a true free market.
I’ll agree that he’s not exactly a hero, but I don’t think he’s necessarily a coward either. I believe in law and order, and no, it’s not legally justifiable to kill the CEO. That said, I can understand his frustration. Especially if he or someone in his family was denied care for cancer or another serious illness.

I get what your saying, ceo compensation is outrageous in some/many cases. Lets not forget on the flip side of this are investors, many of them us citizens, that get benefits from those profits via investments, retirements, 401 k, etc. i really don't know how to rein in the health care behemoth but i do know that for myself systems such as canada, norway

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Thompson_(businessman)
From 1997 to 2004, Thompson worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) as a manager in the transaction advisory services group of the audit practice. He joined UnitedHealth Group in 2004 and was named the CEO of UnitedHealthcare government programs which included Medicare and retirement as well as community and state divisions in 2021. His total compensation was $9.6 million in 2021, $9.8 million in 2022, and $10.2 million in 2023.[11] Under his leadership, UnitedHealthcare's profits increased from $12 billion in 2021 to $16 billion in 2023.[12] At the time of Thompson's death, the company was the largest health insurer in the United States.[13]
The Associated Press reported that Thompson generally kept "a low public profile" but he received attention for an announcement at a investor meeting in 2023 that UnitedHealthcare was shifting to a value-based health care model of payment to health-care providers, as opposed to a fee-for-service model.[14]
Reports of increasing rates of prior authorization denials prompted investigations by ProPublica and the United States Senate, investigations which were described as a "stain" on Thompson's time of leadership by Fortune.[12] The Senate report, published by the United States Senate Homeland Security Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, focused in particular on denials for Medicare Advantage plans serving the elderly and disabled.[15] The investigation revealed that in 2019, UHC's prior authorization denial rate was 8%. He became CEO in 2021, and by 2022 the rate of denial had increased to 22.7%. For both Medicare and non-Medicare claims, UHC declines claims at a rate which is double the industry average.[12]
In 2021, Thompson was criticized in an open letter from the American Hospital Association regarding a plan from UnitedHealthcare to start denying payment for what it deemed non-critical visits to hospital emergency rooms. UnitedHealthcare responded by delaying rollout of the change.[14] Additionally, under his leadership, UnitedHealthcare began using artificial intelligence to automate claim denials, resulting in their customers either incurring significant out-of-pocket medical bills or being unable to receive needed medical treatment.[16]
In May 2024, the Hollywood, Florida Firefighters' Pension Fund sued Thompson and two UnitedHealth Group executives (CEO Andrew Witty and executive chairman Stephen J. Hemsley), alleging fraud and insider trading. The plaintiff alleges that the defendants failed to disclose an antitrust investigation into the company by the United States Department of Justice and by selling stock options before the probe was made public.[6][17][18][19] Data concerning these allegations and notice of its report to the Securities and Exchange Commission were initially published in the Minnesota Star Tribune in February 2024.[20]

Bro really liked his backpacks ...
Clearly he had a legitimate spinal issue but it appears from his posts that he had successful surgery mid-2023, and 6 mths later, or at any point, he isn't railing about a reoccurring problem (https://ihsoyct.github.io/index.html?comments=1agvmbf&id=kp2mbhx) or for that matter against insurers by the looks of it to any visceral degree, and his energetic outburst being led into court didn't show any obvious physical issues currently. Also you have to assume medical financial ruin would never be a genuine problem given the family are well off
In addition, no obvious escalation in tone or anger, such as some huge getbig meltdown, up until the posts just stop in May, which correlates with when he supposedly went off the grid in real life
Interesting to note he complained about visual snow, which is the same obscure condition Kohberger had also posted about

Less than a day after police apprehended and charged 26-year-old Luigi Mangione with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, waves of merchandise in support of the suspected killer are flooding popular e-commerce websites.
On Amazon, a search for “Luigi Mangione” early Tuesday brought up a list of T-shirts, tank tops, mugs, and even a tote bag with the phrase “Free Luigi,” many promising the items before Christmas.

Federal prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against the man accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel on 4 December, US attorney general Pam Bondi said on Tuesday.
Bondi said in a press release that she’s “directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty” for Luigi Mangione, 26, because he allegedly committed “a premeditated, cold-blooded assassination that shocked America”. The move, Bondi notes, is in an effort to “carry out President Trump’s agenda to stop violent crime and Make America Safe Again”.

I disagree. This move has nothing to do with making America safe. It has everything to do with protecting their buddies in the insurance industry and by their I don't just mean Trump. The guy that got whacked was a sleezebag and while I don't condone killing those we disagree with, I'll say I'm shocked there haven't been more acts like this.

I mean left and right in political office. Believe it or not, I believe in free markets and capitalism but certain things should not be for profit. Mainly health care. The guy that got whacked was a sleezebag and while I don't condone killing those we disagree with, I'll say I'm shocked there haven't been more acts like this.
Who the fuck are they "protecting"? The CEO is already dead. Luigi is already in jail. The death penalty is a "thing" it's not like they invented it for this incident.
It has nothing to do with protecting the interests of big-insurance.
This was cold blooded, pre meditated murder.
The death penalty is completely warranted.
Can't believe how many retarded assholes were hailing this dipshit as a hero for such a loathsome cowardly act.

You're obviously in the tank for big pharma. It has everything to do with protecting the insurance racket. It was cold blooded and pre-meditated. But it's not a federal crime. It was a NYC crime and the state of NY doesn't have the death penalty. They are re-inventing the rules to give him the death penalty. Not a cowardly act in my opinion. He's a smart dude and had to know he would eventually be caught. He had a life of privilege and gave it up for the cause. Pretty selfless if you ask me.

what if the ceo denied you or your loved one insurance? why are you fine with him essentially killing God knows how many people?
and what was cowardly? why is it every time a guy does something wrong it's called "cowardly"?

he shot him twice, in the back and the leg
that's no more "sneaky" than killing somebody by denying them the care they need, all to appease your shareholders, at least luigi had the balls to see his target in person

Dead yet?

I don’t condone murder unless it’s of the vigilante sort. A family member was molested or murdered in cold blood, etc. Over healthcare coverage? How beta! Gen Z faggotry strikes again

Do you say that for any reason other than legal stratagem?

Oh boy. I'm sorry I stumbled across this 'final boss' level of stupidity...
Ok, here it goes...
1st. Because I disagree with you I'm "obviously in the tank for big pharma" ? Grow up. I didn't figure you to resort to such a nonsensical childish accusation right off of the bat. Using that rationale you're obviously in the bag for Narcissistic, homosexual, cowardly, sociopaths.
No. I'm not 'in the tank for big pharma. What would you base such a statement on? You sound like an idiot. I could give a fuck less about 'big pharma' , of course you have to break it down into simplistic, obvious arguments for you to understand. Well here's a simpler one even for a person of your limited thought process: I don't particularly like criminals, I harbor specific hatred for violent criminals but more than anything I despise cowardly violent criminals. But what's even more disgusting than that are morons like you and proud virigin who see a cowardly violent cold blooded murderer and put them on a pedestal and label them " Heros" You know the type, the same kind of people the George floyd statue was made for; dumbasses.
This is why we are fucked as a society, as a country and as species. Because a great mass of normal, educated, hard working people can see this and call this smelly cunt a hero.
2nd. For every federal law, there are state laws and ,for the most part- vice versa. For every state law there are municipal laws passed by city charter. And YET with all those federal, state, municipal and city laws, The charging decision is legal strategy made by the COUNTY D.A./Prosecutors office. "They're not making up rules" You are making up bullshit because you have no fucking clue what you're talking about. The bias in favor of luigi that was fueled by the media frenzy surrounding this case makes it a great candidate for a federal prosecution. It will allow for a neutral venue and an objective jury pool. Id also assume that manufacturing a firearm requires the purchase of certain parts. the possession of which are strictly federal offenses, as JUST ABOUT ANYTHING INVOLVING a firearm IS and therefore also a candidate for federal prosecution. (Pssst. The feds actually have a complete law enforcement agency dedicated to firearm offenses. They also go after Tobacco and Alcohol offenses too. But I guess you find that hard to believe. I'm just re-inventing the rules I suppose, huh, numbnuts?)
Do you really believe murders don't get federally prosecuted? Are you really saying that "they" "reinvented" the rules for this? You don't know anything about jurisdiction, venue, the legal analysis that goes into a charging decision, what crimes he's being charged with, how those issues are decided. You think 'New York has it's own court house! They must just be reinventing the rules. That's the only explanation!"
My God, the problem with an argument THIS fucking stupid is: you don't know what you're talking about. At all. So someone needs to explain it to you. Yet, you've already decided you won't listen to me because 'I'm in the tank of big pharma.' Holy hell... what 'tank' are you in? The prefrontal lobotomy industry?
3. Not a cowardly act? .... oh yeah you were a Biden voter. That's right. Your head is planted firmly all the way up your colon. (Now, if I recall correctly, a few years back when the first 2 or 3 cops went into the classroom in Uvalde and each one got shot in the head and yet seeing the guy before him get shot and going in anyway only to get shot and seeing that guy get shot and going in anyway... i remember having to explain to a bunch of stupid fucksticks on here, how that was actually NOT cowardice and despite the fact that the agency head fucked up, you could divest individual acts from organizational failure. But here you are, unable to divest a cowardly murderous act from your disslike of the pharmaceutical industry. Therefore because I disagree with murdering a family man, I must be in bed with big pharma?)
4. He didn't "give up a life of privilege for the cause" Jesus fucking christ you sound half retarded now. HE DIDN'T PLAN ON GETTING CAUGHT. Lol. He even denied it, shouting, in a hysterical outburst, panick stricken, like a cowardly little bitch. He certainly didn't take responsibility 'for the cause.' What a stupid fucking thing to say.
What 'cause' is that anyway? oh yeah that's right I've noticed how much my premiums have reduced since this guy was murdered. Ive noticed lower co-pays, ive noticed smaller deductible. LOL. What an unhinged conclusion. He changed nothing. There is no cause. If I remember it had to do with his 'back pain.' Yeah, totally selfless. You think he did it for you? Or anyone else?
Not only was your post asinine it conveys one of the larger problems that is dividing the country, otherwise seemingly normal, well adjusted, educated people say stupid ass shit without knowing what the fuck they're talking about nor do they think about what they've actually said before they say it. The internet and social media have put the evolution of human stupidity into warp speed because stupid people are connecting in ways they never would've, like you and proud virgin for example fertilize each others barren mindscape with bizarre notions of 'heroism' and you're essentially in an echo chamber. You have thousands of idiots talking to each other all saying 'yep, luigi mangina, who ambushed a man and shot him in the back without warning, is a hero! In fact not cowardly at all!' "Yep. Couldn't agree more" "exactly what I was thinking" absurd and utterly fucking ridiculous. That you've been so brainwashed that you can't see something as simple as this for what it is. It's EXACTLY how there are people donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to Killer Karmelos sub-human baboon family and it's equally disgusting
For me to disagree, I must be in the tank for big pharma... yeah. Big pharma is scratching out a check for me as I write this. Adding zeros for every character I type. JFC. I suppose because you see this as a 'cause' that you'll be the future narcissistic, sociopathic , bisexual, spoiled brat that takes out the next CEO ?
Maybe you've never witnessed a loved one murdered in cold blood. But I don't think experiencing that is a prerequisite for figuring this one out. Maybe you've never experienced heroism, maybe that quality doesn't exist in you. But I don't think you have to charge the beaches of Normandy to understand a straightforward concept like heroism either.
-
Do you say that for any reason other than legal stratagem?
Legally speaking, it's a no brainer. The dead CEO gets no sympathy from me as he made millions denying people care and most certainly in some instances life saving care. Fuck him.
