Maybe. I know this might be an unpopular opinion, but I’m a fan of tariffs over income taxes. Conceptually, it feels fairer to tax what people buy rather than what they earn. Plus, it could shift American habits in a good way. There’s so much waste in our society. Maybe this would push us to be more frugal. Why does someone making $50k a year drop $50k on a car or eat out every night?

If the tariffs work you will see the media and historians working overtime to give credit to anyone or anything but Trump.

The stock market has been over-valued for years and due for a correction.

Tesla was (is?) an example of an insanely over-valued stock.

Those not sensibly diversified will learn a hard lesson.

It's a scenario repeated over and over and some people never
learn.

The market has not made sense to me since covid.

I've always done the simple 3 fund portfolio with ETFs of bonds, US stocks, and international stocks. More recently I put a ~5% allocation to a bitcoin index fund (not recommended by my usual conservative advisors). I've always thought of bonds as the traditional way to hedge against a market downturn but with a devalued dollar it makes me wonder about gold which I've never done.

You'll end up fine doing that.

I can't give advices on bitcoin except as a place to risk money you can afford to lose.
Who knows though it could pay off.

Gold is strictly a hedge against financial  armageddon.  It produces no income and historically has only matched inflation at best.  The gold shills always advertise heavily during uncertain times, playing on fear.

For those who cannot afford dips in the market, you are correct. If the market crashes, it is a completely different story because almost no one can afford this.

but why is it in the national interest that fuel industry is being discriminated against. Why are they being deprived of the tariff benefits available to other industries ?

$6T of wealth gone isn’t a “dip”, it’s a historic event.

I think Trump has some good policies but this tariff thing is one of the dumbest of all time. Someone please explain how making goods more expensive for Americans—who already struggle to get by—is a good thing.  Because to me it appears as though it will plunge this country straight into a deep recession, if not a depression.

This is what I don't get. If tariffs are so bad for our country, then wouldn't retaliatory tariffs also be bad for the other countries? So, aren't those other countries also just hurting themselves by doing the retaliatory tariffs on the US?

I guess the thought is, it forces production in the US instead of abroad, this creating jobs here and in turn stimulating the economy. I’d also wager that maybe he thinks it will cause the Fed to drop interest rates to make sure we don’t slip into depression. Just my thoughts, I’m not an economist though or anything.

Over a long enough period, sure.  But that will take YEARS if you just leave it up to market forces. Factories don’t just pop up overnight in response to a bunch of tariffs.  The responsible way to do it would be to carry out  a long term plan over a few years to transition back to domestic manufacturing.  Thereby minimizing any negative effects to Americans and the American economy.

Slapping a bunch of tariffs on everything overnight will just kill American businesses and strangle the American consumer.

It's a national security issue.

We can't rely on getting critical supplies from China and other potential enemies.

Agreed.  We should invest heavily in domestic manufacturing.  Levying heavy tariffs on everything will lead to high inflation and tank the economy.  The next president will overturn the tariffs and it will have all been for naught.

If Biden or Harris imposed these tariffs the media would be praising them.

They’d be calling for them to be 25th’d, and rightfully so.  We are being driven into an economic depression.

So let’s say due to market uncertainty the Fed drops interest rates, other countries bend the knee to get the tariffs lifted, and the stock market goes crazy. Will Trump get any credit for this? Will this market crash be temporary like we saw at the beginning of Covid? I’d like to think that’s what happens, but I’m not sure. Musk, a close adviser to the president, has been unusually quiet as the rollout of Trump’s sweeping tariffs have caused the markets to tumble and global trading partners to retaliate.

You're not that bright and you're obviously watching and listening to the same lying bullshit that you usually do. The tariffs were paused 90 days on countries that didn't retaliate. After 90 days the tariffs will stay in place but be reevaluated based on the reactions of the countries that were paused. China wasn't apart of the pause.

President Trump says his tariffs may raise enough revenue to replace the income tax, so why is he afraid to let Americans see what they’re paying? Instead of owning its policy, the White House has bullied Amazon to keep quiet about what it will cost.

Haha!  How is those tariffs today?  Did we take in another $2B, $2.5B, or $3B in "revenue" again today like El Orange-O claims?

Looks like the automotive tariffs are evidence of this.   :D :D :D

Correct S&P numbers look about the same even a little better. Also, a year ago, we had high inflation. According to 'YCharts', the US inflation rate is at present 2.39% compared to 3.48% last year. This goes to show folks should not get their shorts in a knot based on what the media reports.

Instead of actually watching what he actually said and repeated by trusted media, you choose ALWAYS to get your "sources" from second, third and fourth party hearsay. Then you wonder why you can't get shit right and lose 90% of the country

LOL! how long did he wait? a week?

The reason he paused the tariffs for anyone with a brain was because of the bond market tanking. He then retroactively used the don't retaliate to not admit his weakness and ineptitude. Mark carney played him like a fiddle.

Can you admit anything truthful about this man? the guy waited 5 days for retaliation lololol ya that was clearly why he paused them, not the bond market tanking from co-ordinated selling and general panic from his absolutely retarded calculations.

The guys isn't very bright, he speaks like a toddler.

Coach - these guys aren’t very smart. They think “doing your own research is nonsense”. They believe that whatever Rafhel Maddow tells them is gospel.

Yes, but the left is more devoid of facts.  They have a collective TDS hive mind right now and it's why their ratings are plummeting, despite some missteps by Trump.

I've been more anti-left than pro-right, but find myself defending the right 99% of time due to the ludicrous accusations and lies from the left (like the shit funk posts).  The left got so off the rails since Trump and are actually getting worse.  They have no leadership, no message, and hardly any common sense centrist types who are listened to.
