I've been meaning to ask you guys, what gives you hope in this seemingly hopeless world?
-
It's not a hopeless world, media (social and otherwise) and political extremists just make it seem so. People that either want to make a buck or have something to sell (since fear sells) or just have an agenda they want to push through, this includes both left and right wing swivel eyed nuts.
There is a book called Progress. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progress:_Ten_Reasons_to_Look_Forward_to_the_Future) On every meaningful metric from health outcomes to life expectancy to violent crime to living standards, it's more or less a golden age particularly in the West.

Do you feel that this book is still applicable today? Specifically with regards to the future of employment and migration.

Someone somewhere is sitting at the foot of a waterfall soaking his feet with no phone no social media no internet thinking just how wonderful his life is....

It is rarely ever as bad as predicted.

The USA with Trump in charge is crushing it.
I have renewed hope.

I have renewed hope.
OTOH we have him now putting nuclear bombs in the UK, US satellite intel and reconnaissance planes in the black sea helping the Ukrainians bomb Russian targets such as the Crimean bridge. US emptying a couple of bases in Iraq, Russia emptying embassy in Tel Aviv, in anticipation of a renewal of the Iran war (I fear a nuclear bomb in Iran this time around). Trump overtly talking about war with China. And so on... :'( :D
I'm pretty black pilled. Europe seemingly lost to the third world hordes. But at the same time, as Raymondo says, "we" have it pretty good all things considered. It probably would be beneficial for mental health to disconnect, as joswift says... because we can't affect things anyway so why worry :D

without world wide TV coverage and constant social media feeding peoples brains we wouldnt know 90% of whats going on
50 years ago hardly anyone knew about all the butchery in African countries
Imagine living in the countryside with no TV or internet and keeping to yourself
Thats the key to peace.

Your points are valid, but I wouldn't call that having hope for the future. Isn't that more like choosing not to think about the future?

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change
The courage to change the things I can
And the wisdom to know the difference.
We have one life, make the best of it.

I was hesitant to ask about religion, but now that you brought it up. I was wondering if getbiggers believe in God.
Great quote by the way.

It’s never been easier to succeed with even a bare minimum of work ethic, effort, and diligence. Simply showing up and doing what is required put you in the top 10% immediately.

Not much hope for Europe, but thankfully i am that old that i do not care that much anymore.
If i was 20 or even 30 today, i would be much more worried.
Especially regarding the new Moldovan Durerea Douglas-Currency

My greatest hope is to simply make a full recovery and to start working out again just to look good in my senior years..............and yes,I pray to Jesus/God many times a day, every day.
I`m presently not supposed to lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk and nothing very heavy for 6 months or so..............but I know it won`t take me that long.

That's nice to hear. I have been going mentally back and forth on all this stuff for many years. It seems like no matter how much research I do, I am not getting an inch closer to a clear and definitive conclusion. The other day I watched an old debate between Dawkins and Lennox, and I felt like Dawkins had Lennox on the ropes at one point, on the subject of Darwinism. Lennox, who usually projects supreme confidence, seemed desperate. At least that's what it looked like to me.

Do you have hope for the present? If so, you will still have it for the future.

The present is great, but the future seems terrible. Is that contradictory?

there is no past there is no future, all we have is the "present".
We call it "the present" because its a gift

I also heard someone say something along the lines of "Yesterday is gone, tomorrow is not promised, today is all you got."
But do people really live by such words? Saying them and appreciating their philosophical value is one thing, but how does it work in practice?

No, because if you practiced it you would have no plans for the future. No eye for the future at all leads to early death.

Right, so the best next thing would seem to me preparing for the future, without getting demoralized with all the Orwellian projections of what it looks like. Which brings me to the topic of hope and where one finds it.
-

But isn´t a "surprise Present" in the future?

Most people are always planning for the future but the future never comes, we are always in the present.
How many people die with hundreds of thousands of pounds if not millions in the bank saving for a future that will never come.
-
But isn´t a "surprise Present" in the future?
what time will it be when you find out what the surprise is?

It's an interesting question, I quickly googled and found this data, which leads me to conclude that the average person dies pretty much with a net worth just enough for a very modest apartment.
Average Inheritance by Age of Death
In a study by United Income, CEO Matt Fellowes looked at how retirees feel and how their spending levels change during retirement and found that:
The average retired adult who dies in their 60s leaves behind $296K in net wealth
$313K in their 70s
$315K in their 80s
$283K in their 90s
-
Part of it is obviously wanting to leave a legacy for your children
But also part of it is you don't know when you are going to die and older people have a fear of the money running out (as well as getting a bit stingy) when in fact it often doesn't
-

Take your existential bullshit and jump off a cliff.
Maybe the adrenaline rush will help you solve everything before impact.

None taken, I found getbig some months ago through a youtuber raving about it.

Seems like a foolhardy thing to do, but thanks for your suggestion anyway.

You don't want to over do it but you need some amount of future planning or you can't live. You wouldn't even work to earn a check if you no care for the future at all. Life would be hand to mouth like an African tribesman lives. Best to walk the tightrope of present/future.

No fun being old and broke.
Had some friends years ago who spent way more than they earned.
They had a beautiful house with all the upgrades, new hot cars, etc.
All bought on credit.
They were insane with the spending.
They went bankrupt, got divorced, wife lives in a trailer park.
Unknown where the husband is.
-
there is no past there is no future, all we have is the "present".
We call it "the present" because its a gift
I first heard that at an AA meeting..........the speaker said......"You have one foot in the past, and the other foot in the future, when in the meantime you are pissing all over the present which is a gift."
-
“Worrying about the future is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum. The real troubles in your life will always be things that never crossed your worried mind.”

Great attitude, good to see 8)
Regarding the supernatural realm, I read this interesting article:
https://edition.cnn.com/2025/08/17/us/atheist-hospice-deathbed-visions-faith-cec
"He said his job reveals what’s ultimately important in life.
“I often ask people how they want to spend what time is left,” he said. “No one ever says, ‘I just want to live long enough to see this bill passed or senate seat flipped.’ More often people say, ‘I just want to hold my mother’s hand. I want to hear my grandchildren playing in the next room.’”

Delaying gratification and looking to the future is seen as a sign of maturity.
"Time preference refers to the value an individual places on immediate versus future rewards. High time preference individuals favor immediate gratification and focus on present needs and short-term benefits. In contrast, low time preference individuals are willing to delay gratification, prioritizing future goals and well-being over immediate desires."
Some say "ice people" in particular developed low time preference due to having to plan for winters, in contrast to Africans.

Yes but stressing about the future can bring about the same result. "Look at the lilies in the field".

Preparing for the future is good as long as one factors in that there is going to be a moment when we have to leave it all behind, therefore the highest form of preparation is preparation for death via meditation.

You are messing with my mind now. That's deep, man.

You are messing with my mind now. That's deep, man.
It really is the central predicament of humanity that it is overly attached to the things that are passing and very neglectful of the eternal truths. Unless a man knows himself as the deathless ever perfect ever present spirit he will never be at peace.

Whether you prepare for death or not its still going to happen.
The Grim Reaper has yet to be Defeated.

Better to prepare for whats going to happen then. I dont see it like that, thats more a nightmarish ideation. I see it as a great melting in to a heavenly state of being.

It takes a tiny group of motivated people to make things happen. The Russian Revolution that exterminated the Tsar and his immediate bloodline was started by a small group of individuals.
Tsar Nicholas II, his wife Alexandra, and their five children (Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia, and Alexei) were executed by Bolsheviks in July 1918 in Yekaterinburg.
Their remains were hidden for decades and later confirmed by DNA testing in the 1990s and 2000s.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Romanov
The House of Romanov (also transliterated as Romanoff. Russian: Романовы, romanized: Romanovy, IPA: [rɐˈmanəvɨ]) was the reigning imperial house of Russia from 1613 to 1917. They achieved prominence after Anastasia Romanovna married Ivan the Terrible, the first crowned tsar of all Russia. Nicholas II, the last Emperor of Russia, and his immediate family were executed in 1918, but there are still living descendants of other members of the imperial house.

On 16 October, a list was published of 159 such émigrés who had arrived in sealed trains from Germany. S. G. Svatikov, the special commissar of the Provisional Government in charge of abolishing the secret police that had worked abroad for the tsars, ascertained that there were at least 99 Jews among them. In the group of 29 that had accompanied Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, leader of the Bolsheviks, there were 17 Jews. There were about 3,000 people in the nationwide political elite in the interrevolutionary months of 1917. More than 300 of them, representing a wide spectrum from the extreme left (Anarchists, Bolsheviks) to the right wing of the Constitutional Democrats (Kadets), were Jews. These 10 percent of the political elite were twice the proportion of Jews in the population as a whole.
