in his monthly column in the back he says that todays bb'ers are lazy and spoiled and that when he came here Weider gave him a little money to get an apartment and a car and that was it, he put himself through school and went to work as a bricklayer with Franco, he says todays pros want everything handed to them, whaddya think?

I think he is 100% right.

good post, too many spoilt brats like tamali.

i thought about this after Toney Freeman posted something like, "i need 8 meals a day, 2 workouts, 2 cardios and 10-12 hrs. sleep, help a brutha out", Toney's a good guy but gimme a fuckin' break.
-
Classic Schwarzenegger trying to pretend he was different. Maybe it's true that they're lazy, I don't know but Arnold himself landed in a great situation - busily training & tanning in Venice in the heyday of the 60s, with an apartment & car ready and waiting; hardly a struggle. Completely the opposite of the rhetoric he repeats every so often about arriving in the US as an immigrant with nothing, which is entirely untrue.
The bricklaying thing, his company "Pumping Bricks": he never did any of the work himself, but again it makes great copy-for him.
The reality is that he never had a 9-5 job in his life until becoming governor. ;D

He probably got that from Flex Wheeler lol he would sleep 16 freacking hours a day!
Eat, sleep and train -- that's all I do. I'm up at 5 and get with the program right away - eat, sleep, train... and maybe listen to the radio. It's a lot of fun. That's the sacrifice I make, but I have to do it in order to achieve what I want. I've done well. I've done things no professional has ever done in this sport. My kids can read about what I've done. That's something to be proud of.

Well considering that the pros of today have to put their bodies through a lot more dangerious situations(i.e. chems) a little more compensation dosnt hurt. If Arnold feels this way why did he (not sure if he is still involved or not) award them some of the best contest prize money?

maybe these "men" should get real jobs instead.

Pro bodybuilding is the cruelest, lowest paying of all professions unless you market yourself and do other things besides try to live on contest winnings, unless your a constant top 5 MrO or Arnold Classic winner......
COmpared to pros of other sports, its just a shame.
I admire pro bodybuilders, they look amazing, and so on...its just stupid though how much work they put into how they look with not tha tmuch in return, unless your Ronnie, Jay, or another high profile pro.

i agree but the thing i don't want to hear is these big pussies crying and getting mad that the sport doesn't give them money, quit complaining and being bitter and do something, i think that's the reason that some of these guys come off like such assholes because they're always broke and wondering how they're going to pay the bills.

the current mr. olympia was a full time cop when he won his first sandow, so arnold doesnt know what the fuck he's talking about
-
the current mr. olympia was a full time cop when he won his first sandow, so arnold doesnt know what the f**k he's talking about
Are you saying the entire Olympia lineup and all the amateur bodybuilders where all cops at one point to advance throughout the ifbb ranks so fast.
-
Fuck arnold
-
He has the exact same article printed every 5 years or so.
-
"It's not about what bodybuilding can do for you but what you can do for bodybuilding"
-
how can anyone in favour of the athletes scoff at them earning a living through the sport? If pros can afford to do nothing but eat, sleep and train, then things are going well! Weider forced his top guy to work as a bricklayer to supplement his meager bodybuilding contract? What a ripe prick! Joe made millions of dollars and still does, and he barely gave the athletes enough to survive!
Arnold is full of shit.
-
Bodybuilding is a lot more competitive now than it was then. It's a lot harder to be a bodybuilder and have a full time job today than back then.
-

I have to agree. times were different then and there was alot LESS compeition then there is now. If Ronnie kept his full time job he may not be the current Mr. O, because Jay, who doesn't work would have been dieting, sleeping and training harder. that could be all it takes.
-

they should complain...when the ifbbb (weider) makes millions a year...and only a handfull of pros are making good money.
it is really a joke how the athletes are treated...i mean they actually have to pay to get their ifbb card...lol
at the very least all pro bodybuilders should have healthcare and some type of benefits package through the ifbb.
the mr o is supposed to be a battle of the best in the world...if a guy qualifies and competes in that show their should be a decent pay day for each of them...i mean what do they get know like a 1000 each? ....and that only started a few years ago.
my point is for what they go through, they do have a right to complain.

I did the trip to LA in October 1968 with the intention of trying to stay there. Not easy for Canadians because they are not allowed to work there. The Mexicans don't worry about such laws. Anyway, I had 200 dollars and a VW plus a Shell credit card. I lasted a month there. I slept in my car for over a week then Chip Wilson from Chicago and his flatmate let me sleep on their sofa in Santa Monica. Arnold arrived in LA in the same week as me and I met him at the original Golds and even took a couple of shots of him that were published in Muscle Training Illustrated. He was easygoing then and even let me measure his arms one day. I saw him hanging around Muscle Beach and Venice Beach with the boys. He didn't seem to have a job.
I heard later that Joe gave him a 'job' in the warehouse shifting boxes around but Arnold wasn't interested. I found out he shared a house with some Aussies and Kiwis in LA. Some of those guys were involved in shipping stolen cars back to Australia and one was arrested and spent time in Jail in America. I have no idea if Arnold was involved. A Kiwi escaped to Vancouver with a new Shelby GT500 and I put the picture together when I was in Hawaii and found out the Aussie was arrested in January 1969 by the FBI. I was on my way back from Australia with my wife to be.
Mits Kowashima brought Arnold and Dave Draper to Hawaii in Jan 69 to do a show. So Arnold had some income from doing shows, etc. Any guy who can't speak English properly and ends up a movie star and governor in California has what it takes to survive in LA.
I lasted a month and when the money ran out I headed back to Vancouver and eventually settled in Sydney in January 1971. Arnold went on to bigger things but people forget he bought a house worth over $1,000,000 back in 1980. So Arnold listened to Joe Gold and invested his earnings in real estate instead of opening a gym.
-
how much were arnold's arms when you measured them?
-
good post, too many spoilt brats like tamali.
You just know that letter was in response to Priest going over to PDI. As much as i love the OAK its obvious that hes living in the 70's. Times change Arnold, i dont know anyone who thinks Ben and Joe are doing anyhting to even remotley help bodybuilders today. Than again im a pathetic loser and dont know anyone but myself.
-
He was easygoing then and even let me measure his arms one day.
Just imagine if getbig was around during that time. Arnold would come on with a thread stating how some little skinny guy came up to him and asked if he could measure him.
-
Arnold did plenty of gay for pay.
And he was as spoiled if not more then most of today pro's.
No doubt he that he is a talented man,but he was also VERY lucky to be in the right place in the right time.
-
i rekon it would be hard having a job and be a pro at the same time
-

Exactly, Arnie is full of shit. He worked hard in the gym but that was about it. He only "got a car and a place to live", well wahhhh, wahhh, wahhh :'( look how tough he had it. Shit a home and transportation are the two most important things to have, it's all down hill after that. Arnold's been putting down the athletes and sport(yes sport, fuck you) that made him famous for years. Nothing new here.
-
I think Arnold can say what he wants about Bodybuilding considering he is the one who made it what it is. Nobody has done as much for the sport as Arnold.
-
f**k arnold
:o
-
You got to be kidding me!!! You call yourself a bodybuilding fan and you say f**k Arnold. What a load of B.S.
-
I don't think there was much luck about the success Arnold had. He made things happen. When he is in a room he dominates it and makes people notice him and he holds court. He knows how to work a room.
Arnold's arms were 21 1/2 that day and he weighed about 255. I think it is true that he arrived there with next to nothing. It didn't take him long to network. Don't forget he was Mr Universe and a huge star even in 68.
-

the guy might not have had a 9-5 job but he did come to this country with nothing and was a millionaire 5 years later nobody gave him that or the 500 million he's made since then give him some credit
-
Vince are you saying that Arnold's arm measured 21.5 in 1968? My God! I don't know if I believe that. What did they measure in 1974?!
-
None of us know exactly what arnold did and didn't do in the early days, but I agree with Vince, who met him. Arnold seems to create and capitalize on opportunities. Its not just that he was in the right place and right time. He is a leader and a magnetic person that others wanted to be around or involved with.
The whole BBing scene is different now, IMO its not an apples to apples comparison.
-
I never post falsehoods. I measured Arnold's arms after he had a workout. I can't remember if he did arms but I don't think so. Why would I post nonsense? I had the photo published in MTI in 1969 and the measurement is quoted there, too. I have that magazine somewhere but in a box among many boxes. I never measured him again. I think he was at his biggest in 73, at least in contest shape. He was huge in 68 but the guys in California told him he was fat. Eventually he listened.
-
21 and a half pumped in 68. yea i can believe it. do you have pictures of arnold in 74? which is the year where he had the biggest legs? In these two pictures he's monstrous everywhere.

He was a great promoter no doubt, but just to get it straight he never came here with nothing, as he's always claimed. That is rhetoric that many eat right up. The actual reality is that Weider was hungry for a guy to elevate BB in ways the other guys he had then wouldn't or couldn't, therefore Schwarzenegger had some leverage in receiving special treatment.
Schwarzenegger didn't want to work in the warehouse doing labor the way Draper did, and instead got an apartment, car, some spending money for writing training articles & was forced to train & tan in probably the most desirable neighborhood in the country, Venice beach in the 60s. Also received huge, instant publicity via magazine covers & articles, that led to to appearance money. Like other BBs he also created a mail order business for in-depth training booklets, using the name Arnold Strong. Not much work to do there, it was easy money.
He was a great salesman AND was also very fortunate-he made his money initially on real estate, buying at a time when the prices were low. The first smallish apartment building he bought in Venice was a suggestion by Weider, not Arnold himself figuring it out. As far as I know, Weider also fronted the money for it as well.
He was good AND lucky-upon arrival in Vencie he was already instantly connected, with Weider, Gold and his gay businessman friend from Europe advising him on his moves. He was excellent in taking advantage of those connections, but just to be clear he had advantages that almost no one else then or now has.
His arms in the 60s at 250 bodyweight were likely bigger than they ever were in his best shape.
-
I think he is 100% right.
couldn't agree more.

He has the exact same article printed every 5 years or so.
That's what I was thinking too.
Fuck, Flex recycles everything..............

f**k, Flex recycles everything..............

-
Most pro's are lazy. Lazy in the gym and lazy making money. ONly thing they are good in is complaining!
-
Arnold was an asshole who would cause property damage to get business for his bricklaying job.
lol care to elaborate?
-
He has the exact same article printed every 5 years or so.
yeah and there was another a few years back and arnold was talking shit about yates. there was a rebuttle article later and yates shot back, hard.
-
Sorry, that was his job as a roofer. He would destroy people's roofs then go to work on their house. Yeah, talk about confidence. The dipshit was more insecure than Kamali.
I am still not getting it. Are you saying while he repairs the roof he destroys it further and then comes back to rebuild it?
-
Yeah arnold was groomed and provided for by none other than uncle joe himself.
You want to know one bodybuilder who fits the description arnold falsely attaches to himself - Sergio OLiva.
-
show pics, blow the arnold nuthuggers minds!!!!
-

I think... that the money that the Weiders and the supplement companies make ,,is nothing in comparisson to the money, the pro's ask for !

From Flex September 2006 issue...
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger Editorial
Lately, I have heard talk from bodybuilders and others who think more monetary rewards should be available in the sport Joe created. I think it’s always good to strive for more, but I want to challenge them to do something about it. Maybe they should create these extra revenue streams by starting their own supplement line, publishing their own bodybuilding magazine or promoting their own pro contests, where they can offer more than the $700,000 plus that is available at the Olympia. If they have innovative ways to improve the bodybuilding economy, I say have at it.
One of President John Kennedy’s famous lines was, “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” I would put a bodybuilding inflexion in there and say, “Ask not what bodybuilding can do for you; ask what you can do for bodybuilding.” You cannot stand and wait for the world to knock on your front door and offer you a living. Of course, everyone needs a little help, sometimes a little luck, but essentially your future is in your own hands.
When Joe brought me to the United States in 1968, he gave me the opportunity to improve myself physically and fiscally. He gave me a stipend that helped me move into a small apartment in Venice and buy a used Volkswagen. It wasn’t a fortune, but it was enough to get me on my own two feet. With a roof over my head, transportation and the ability to feed myself, I had all I needed as a foundation upon which I could build myself.
Soon after relocating, I enrolled in business school, I did bricklaying work with Franco Columbu, and I went about the business of finalizing my long-term plan for reaching all my goals one by one. With the security of knowing I had the basic tools for survival at my disposal, I was able to spread my wings and soar toward my loftiest goals.
Joe put me in that position. He believed in teaching you how to fish, rather than simply giving you a fish when you’re hungry. That way, you become more self-reliant. Joe gave me the opportunities, but it was up to me to work hard to maximize those opportunities. Neither Franco nor I ever saw Joe as a meal ticket. We saw him as a kind of dream maker. It was as if he laid out a treasure map but left it to us to decipher it by combining our ambition, talent and work ethic. And we did. Franco is now a successful chiropractor living in Los Angeles, and I’ve done pretty well for myself, as you probably know. Joe gave us the opportunity to better ourselves and we took it with both hands.
-
While he does the free assessment he would destroy the roof.
Don't kid yourself, Arnold was as much a drug addict as pros today in terms of his mentality. The only reason he wasn't gassed to the max is because he didn't have the gear that is around today. DO NOT KID YOURSELF. Have you seen this man off gear? He was around 5'11-6'0 and maybe - MAYBE 210 soaking wet. Don't try to debate me on this because I will just post the pictures which prove it.
Again you have no proof and nothing to go by.
-
All drugs - NO DIFFERENT THAN PROS TODAY.
And to the Arnie nuthuggers: shut the hell up about Arnold having confidence. To own a 23 year old deaf and emotionally dependent child is the EXACT OPPOSITE of confidence.

Arnold at 210. ::)
WOOT WOOT!!! WHAT A NON DRUG DEPENDENT BEAST!!!!! ::)
In the end does it matter? He did more for bodybuilding than any other competitor.
Additionally, everything he states in his editorial is right on the mark. A lot of people today have this sense of entitlement when in fact no one owes them a damn thing.

This is absolutely right! Bodybuilders expect Joe to come up with more and more money every year from what? What are bodybuilders doing to promote our sport? Getting pregnant is not the right exposure.

Explain yourself! Arnold looks better here than any other gym member. What the hell are you talking about the child thing?????
-
In the end does it matter? He did more for bodybuilding than any other competitor.
Such a simplistic generalization, from someone who i'm quite sure wasn't there back in the day. You act like he was an altruist doing it all for BB when in fact it was for himself.
Take a break, get off your knees and stop worshiping him for a change.
-
hahaha!! Shawn Ray and Lee Priest come to mind. Yeah, let's bump up the prize money and pay bodybuilders money that the industry doesn't even generate. ::)
Here's an idea: if you don't like the terms, STOP COMPETING. Nobody is forcing you on stage with a cattleprod.
I think that's the point Arnold is making. You can't squeeze blood from a stone.
If the competitors want more money then they need to find a way to generate more revenue.
-

Obviously, but the point is that Schwarzenegger shouldn't be attacking them without also acknowledging the huge benefits he accrued, since groupies like this aren't interested in seeing the balanced perspectives Schwarzenegger conveniently leaves out. They just eat up the one-dimensional versions Arnold presents, as if they were gospel.
At the end of the day he probably knew they were an easy mark; he can create controversy by attacking them. As usual he enjoys manipulating the sheep who always buy the stuff he says without question. ;D

And you were? :-\
Did I ever make the statement that Arnold did anything other than for himself? Read the article. Everything he did was for himself and to improve his lot in life. Was he a dick about it? Yep. It still doesn't change the fact that he networked, busted his ass, and did what he had to do to succeed.
-

Anyone with a balanced perspective wouldn't take his rhetoric so seriously.
And yes, I was there backstage in the mid-70s when he was 6'1", 210 lb. acting like a self-important A-hole, as usual.
-

Personally, I really couldn't give a shit but let's stick to the key points in his editorial:
- You can't demand more money if the revenue does not exist (see the NHL, WNBA, or WUSA for examples).
- No one in life owes you a damn thing so if you want something go out and work for it.
You don't have to be a Arnold fan to recognize this, "pumpster." ::)

Rhetoric? It's common sense. Anyone who is old enough as you claim to be would know this.

I'll save it for one of his huge losing streaks, since he's notoriously erratic and had some serious issus until recently. You know, those long losing streaks you continue to ignore. hahahaahahah

Lou = a child.
Most bodybuilders are meatheads who don't have the faintest idea how to generate exposure for the industry.
Schwarzenegger looked like gold in PI, in part because most of the rest allowed to talk were pinheads, really unimpressive. More formidible guys like Oliva and Mentzer weren't shown, nor were more intelligent players like Nubret allowed to talk. Partially by design, the movie was a star vehicle.
You can see Mentzer for a millisecond at the counter at Gold's, quite obviously not one of the boys and completely non-existent in the presentation. Would've been a lot more interesting not to mention more balanced to have heard from him, from Nubret and from Oliva. They tried but were not able to get Draper on-camera.

I'll save it for one of his huge losing streaks, since he's notoriously erratic and had some serious issus until recently. You know, those long losing streaks you continue to ignore. hahahaahahah
Everyone loses, pumpster, but it doesn't make him overhyped and erratic. Of course you're just to delusional to recognize that. ;D

Except that he *is* erratic you knucklehead, and not just a little like you're desperate to portray it. He knew it even if you're too dizzy to, which is why during one of the longest streaks he started having to try different swings. ;D

I love how some of you guys find the same couple pictures of Arnold and criticize him. BBing was very different in the 70s. These guys weren't using AAS all year round and using quite a bit less than the pros today. They also still believed in health in addition to muscles. Thats why you see pics of arnold running in the offseason, and BBers actually doing some sports. Also, at various times in his career, he was told to lose weight for tv/movies and publicity. He wanted to be a star and did just that.
For everyone throwing around stats....arnold is 6'1. End of story. I'm sure Arnold usually walked around without supps at 230 or above. More preparing for a show.
He has fantastic genetics for BBing and an excellent mesomorph frame. If he did what the pros did today with all the advances in training, nutrition and supps, he'd be right there.
-
in his monthly column in the back he says that todays bb'ers are lazy and spoiled and that when he came here Weider gave him a little money to get an apartment and a car and that was it, he put himself through school and went to work as a bricklayer with Franco, he says todays pros want everything handed to them, whaddya think?
That is a sign of the times. Most people nowadays are lazy and do not want to work for anything. The last generation made things happen, and this one expects that kind of lifestyle without the work that went into creating it.

It must be really painful to talk out of your ass as much as you do.
Tiger Woods has won 12 majors and doesn't seem to be slowing down. What does he have to do for you to recognize him for the great player that he is? You don't even have to be a fan of golf (which I'm not) to acknowledge what he's done over years.
Did you drop one of your pink Spa Lady dumbbells on your head or have you always been this bitter?

Exactly. It wouldn't matter who made the remarks. It wouldn't make them any less true.

I measured Arnold in January 1969 in Mit's Gym in Honolulu. Several guys were making claims about how tall they were and I challenged them. Each guy lost 1/2 to 1 inch under what he claimed. It was in the evening so perhaps you can shrink 1/2 inch during the day. Anyway, Arnold claimed he was 6-2. I challenged him and he got on the scale that had a height guage on it. He was 6 1 1/2 and stood as tall as he could. I told him he might be 6-2 in the mornings. I don't know of anyone else who has posted that they actually measured Arnold's height. I assume the scale was within 1/4 inch of being accurate. No one complained that the height guage was faulty.
I have posted this before but a lot of people just don't believe it. Go figure.

Are you talking about Chip Wilson the guy that was around during the original muscle era with Steeve Reeves etc etc?
Know he does like a art collection or something?

Pretty cool. Do you ever train with Arnold or see how he trained? Can you enlighten those that only had a Flex issue of his superset chest workouts.
-
I never trained with Arnold. I saw him training in Sydney and he had a guy counting sets of leg extensions. I thought this guy was the first muscle caddy!
Chip Wilson trained at Gold's in late 68. He was one of the guys there and quite cynical about life so we got along fine. I have no idea what happened to him since. He was a serious guy and no fool but I wouldn't call him a musclehead.
-
You guys are acting like Arnold actually wrote that article. ::)

Perry (RIP) used to have some *pics of Arnold and Joe having sex...(*in a safe or safety deposit box, etc.,)...true or false??
