I found an old photo from 1974 taken at my gym. It was one of the first 'seminars' that Arnold gave in Australia. I have several more photos taken that day. I asked Arnold plenty of questions then the audience asked theirs. He did a posing routine too then demonstrated exercises. The guy was huge! Next he went to Tony's Gym for a posing routine then came to my penthouse apartment at Manly for dinner and some fun. He disappeared for a while and couldn't be found.

That is AWESOME!
Huge!
Hey Vince, What did you guys eat? What did you talk about? How much would you say Arnold weighed there?
Give us DETAILS!
-
With Sergio.
-
Ray Mentzer used to clown around.
-
We always tried to have fun in our gym. Here is Chicken Legs. This guy could sing and he sure was a ham at time. He forgot to train his legs but had a big upper body.
-
Ray Mentzer put on great seminars and training camps. This one was in 1987.
-
My MEd photo from Sydney University in 1989
-
Arnold was huge in 1974.
-
Larry Scott gave the best seminar we ever had at our gym in 1979. He did some posing when requested.
-
(bookmark) cool pics..

you named your son Zorba??? No doubt that kid took some beatings in school
-
We had a lot of nice Aussie girls in the gym. Several did powerlifting and looked even better.
-
You need to get the idea out of your head that pros did anything differently back then than they do now. They ate big and trained hard just like the guys today. I assure you that they had the same mentality as pros today. They would have been mainlining bodybuilding drugs if the option was available - just like guys today. Why didn't they? Because they couldn't.
I know that. But I love to hear personal accounts of what they ACTUALLY did versus what they TELL everyone else to do....Arnold was the KING of that...
-
I named my son after my hero, Zorba The Greek who was a real person. Just so that he had others we called him Vincent Frank Henry Zorba Basile so he could have his pick. No one ever teased him which surprized his Australian Grandfather who was a Crown Solicitor. Zorba was elected School Captain when he was a senior at Carlingford High School. I was lucky enough to be school president in KHS in Kamloops in 1960. Sometimes names don't have the impact we imagine they might have.
-
Zorba---gayer than a creamsicle

this thread is gayer than two guys sharing a milkshake

Adonis, you have to understand that drug use was frowned upon in the old days and was considered cheating. Arnold admitted using steroids but only before contests. I guess all he had to do was to keep having contests to prepare for. The doctors advising bodybuilders about drugs were not reckless and the idea was to go on them for a few months then go off. I think Arnold and many of the top guys used stuff like Decadurabolin. Dianabol was popular with many of the top guys. Everyone kept their mouth shut about any drugs so a sub-culture was formed and insiders passed the information onto others. I was never in that loop and no one told me anything about steroids. There were handbooks being published even then that had heaps of stuff.
The training was more or less pyramids and then choosing a few exercises for each bodypart and training those bodyparts about 2 times a week. The top guys who didn't have to work used to go to the gym twice a day and split split routines. I guess Arnold did what you would call volume training. Ray Mentzer advocated more intense and briefer workouts with a good warmup. Those who followed Ray's advice got good results. We all wondered about injuries because Ray had a perpetually sore neck perhaps from that day he did a double squat with 925 pounds. Ray was a huge guy and muscle for muscle one of the biggest to ever visit Australia. For some reason he doesn't look that big in photos but he was a giant.
-
A few of us from 1975 just before my last contest where I placed last thanks to Paul Graham and Arnold S.
-
Here is what I looked like a week out from the 1975 Mr Australia contest.
-
Cool Pics thank for sharing
-
Very interesting pictures. I don't see the reason this thread has my name on it but interesting pictures
-
The original gym in West Ryde long before I bought it. Perhaps this photo was from the late 1950s. I bought the gym for $1,500 back in August 1971.
-
Ray did a double with 925? Damn, even to unrack that weight is impressive. He was 5'9 right?
Let's be real though, Arnold looked like nothing compared to pros today. We are just wooed by his height, his looks, his charisma, the fact he was getting laid like mad, the fact he was an alpha male, the fact he would hide his flaws in posing, the fact he was so much superior to competition which was much weaker than what is around today, and lastly and probably MOST importantly, the fact that only the best pictures of Arnold are ever used in his defense which were favourable, or black and white, or taken up close, or with a wide angle lens, etc, etc. He would be nothing special today. Granted he was from a different era, but if you keep comparing him to pros today, expect people to criticize him accordingly.

This is not the most popular opinion but I liked Mike Mentzer's physique over Arnold's. How strong was he compared to his brother Ray?
-
Well, Vince G, you are always belittling me and putting my accomplishments down. Just thought you would be proud if you accomplished some of the things I have done.
-
cool pics
-
You can ask Onlyme about how strong Ray was. The guy was very strong. He would max out on most Nautilus machines and add big plates. He could use the whole stack on the leg extension with one leg! No doubt he was big and strong. Not sure how Mike compared but Ray was bigger and stronger from what I could tell. He also had longer muscle bellies. If Ray had a physically smaller head he would have appeared much larger. Sergio was blessed with a head in proportion to his body.
-
Vince not embarassing himself on this board would be an accomplishment all in it self.
-
Another gym photo. Imagine working out in a place like this? Women didn't go to bodybuilding gyms in those days. When we introduced women on alternate days there was almost a riot! Eventually we made a separate gym for the women and today we have co-ed. There are chains for ladies only even here in Australia. One is called Fernwood. We had a women's only gym back in 1976.
-
I don't comprehend why references to gay is considered an insult in this day and age. Poofter bashing was something only lowclass ignorant people used to do. I don't anyone having a go at me but keep my family out of it. Fun is fun but my family is precious to me and I think we should never trespass in that area on line.
-
Vince, you must have shot dozens of pics of Sergio when you had him down there. Can you post them along with a few detailed stories on IronAge?
The Beef.
-
We used to have contests at our annual Christmas party which is mid-summer in Australia. Here are the Miss West Ryde girls from a contest in the late 1970s.
-
I bought a Rollex 2 1/4 SLX camera with special lenses to shoot Sergio. He wanted $1,000 up front and was not in good condition when he was here so I didn't take many shots of him. I will post what I can. I will archive these at the Ironage forum later. The lads here need to see another side to bodybuilding from the rot posted here daily.
-
is that gym on Victoria rd
-
Bev Francis posed with Sergio in 1981 and what a sight that was to see. Perhaps the best bodybuilder of each sex was up there on the stage posing together.
-
We used to be on Victoria Road until we moved in 1992. Then we moved to Meadowbank in 2002. We are at 37 Narcarrow Ave, Ryde, near Meadowbank Tech.

Is that anywhere near the Gold's gym where Billy Smith gave Flex Wheeler a skin caliper test at and he measured 0.0% BF, the lowest reading ever recorded at that time. At least this is what Jim Quinn reported during the telecast of the 93' O
-
Larry Scott is a natural teacher and perhaps the best technician as far as exercises are concerned. He won the Olympia with the least gifted genetics of any of the winners. Here he is demonstrating how to do biceps to get the long head developed close to the elbows.
-
Sorry for the confusion. I called my gym Vince's Gym after Gironda's gym in North Hollywood. He gave me permission to use the name when I was at his gym in 1980. He was at home working on articles so I missed seeing him but I did talk to him on the phone. One of my ambitions was to build a better gym than Golds, Vince's and Loprinzis. I think I surpassed all of those gyms by a wide margin and am still designing and building new equipment. My gym is in Sydney Australia. Those locations are suburbs in Sydney.
-
Look at my assisted dip and chin. Stainless handles, steady steps with handrail, bottom out escape bar, counterweight, quarter plates, etc. The Rolls Royce of gym equipment. Well, not quite, but better than any other equipment I have seen.
-

-
Sorry, here is the escape bar which was added after those photos were taken.
-
Interesting thread
And I saw a fernwood in brisbane has been swallowed by fitness first. Another gym chain "goodlife" has started get bought out by ff too..
-
Fitness First haven't made us an offer yet. We are forging ahead anyway and trying to do the best we can and provide a great gym and services to the public. We cater to bodybuilders but not exclusively. No one can and survive. Those days are gone.

Yep it isn't like back in 93 before the O.

View of part of the main room at our gym. Those weight stacks are 150 Kg or 330 pounds. The other machine has stacks of 300 pounds. I have another 4-way I need to install soon.

if you did enough sets on those machines you could probably get your BF pretty low. Maybe all the way down to 1% or even lower. who knows?
-
thanks for sharing the old pics of arnold and oliva, its rare to see ones i havent seen before.
did ray mentzer really squat 925 for 2? wouldnt that make him stronger than all the PL'ers of the era?
-
Rays arms look massive...
I like the old gym... how about the lat pull attached to the roof!

old gym's are cool. I like the way they used to be back in 93. That was a Gold age for gyms. 0.0 gyms are that cool now.

really? why do you say that?
By the way have you ever watched the 93 O telecast. Jim Quinn had some great color commentary going. I hope they bring him back for this year's webcast.

maybe he can measure up chick and dan?

maybe he can measure up chick and dan?
well he could certainly report on it if Billy Smith were invited in to measure them, although I don't know if Smith would be allowed to take the calipers from Golds. The gym may own the set.

You seem like a persistant fella SS how about you put an APB out for Billy Smith then perhaps you could start a petition we could present to Matteo the manager at gold's venice to allow the golden calipers to be released from the vault for the olympia weekend?

Well I'm outside Billy's house stealing his wifi right now so maybe I'll just knock on his door and see if he can help. He already helped us a lot back in 93 by documenting the incredible condition of Flex Wheeler, good thing he passed his findings on to Jim Quinn so they could be recorded for Posterity.

Good pics Vince - nice to see some credible photos for once. Not sure about some of these women in the photos though! ;D

I would like to see some INcredbile photos. photos of people with amazing condition, maybe even some of the best conditioned individual as measured by caliper body fat testing at Gold's gym prior to the 93 O

West Ryde (where vince's gym was for 30 years) isn't renowned for it's hot women...
more like fat single mothers out in that area generally...
the hotter girls in sydney live near the beaches or the city itself

I hear the climate there is pretty similar to what you get in southern california or venice italy. It's been that way since way before 1993
-
Hey, those are some of our best gals. West Ryde has a lot of working class areas around so that colours the people there. We had people coming from long distances to train there. We don't get many fat women training there, either. Just the usual mix that you see in most gyms. We have always had more male members and that has always worried us because we got a reputation for being a serious gym and that has been something very difficult to change. That is partly why I changed the name to Vince & Roz's Fitness World and it is now simply V&R Fitness which I don't think is as good. We did much better in the 3000 sq ft primitive gym than in our 20,000 and 30,000 square foot clubs we have had for the last 15 years. I think the mix is quite good at the moment and the test is to see if you can attract all types of members and not just muscleheads. I made some nice dumbbells but only up to 130 pounds. We have one member who weighs about 340 pounds and he benched 575 a couple of weeks ago. He needs bigger dumbbells. So the gym is always evolving.
We are near the middle of Sydney but about 1/2 an hour from the Downtown and 40 minutes from some of the beaches. Sydney has 4 million people and is huge. Everyone here wants to have their own home so the density isn't like you find in big American cities such as LA or NY. The climate here is similar to northern Florida or southern Georgia.
-
so the density isn't like you find in big American cities such as LA or NY.
Is the density anything like what the calipers of Billy smith found on the body of Flex wheeler back in 93 at the Venice Golds? Jim Quinn reported that that was pretty dense during the O telecast that went on later that year.

Hijacking threads takes real talent. Some people with agendas have gimmick accounts. Just don't expect any more responses in this asylum.

I don't expect anything I respond to everything. Flex's name was preordained because you can't Flex fat, so flex is diametrically opposed to Fat. SO the name was prophetic because even though he was born with BF after many years of training in 93 he became the first person to ever be measured at the venice golds to lack it, that is Body FAT.
-
some great photos Vince. But damn, your ex is disgusting. I'm amazed you had the courage to bone her.

She made him look thin. so it was kind of selfish getting involved with her. Imagine 93 Flex standing next to that human mountain of shit. He would have looked so awesome that Billy smith probably couldn't have even kept his shit together long enough to calliper him.

damn
that's harsh

damn

harsher than 93 flexes precontest diet
MONSTER CALORIC DEFICIT

And you guys accually believed the shyt that was coming outta Arnies mouth - if he wasn't talken bout steroid cycles he wasn't telling you shyt that would have you looking anywhere close to his size!!

Awesome pics Vince. Yes Ray was unreal strong. I will always remember when he was training me for the World Championships how I passed him on every lift we did except for the squats. I didn't really train my legs much because I ruptured my L4 & L5 squatting back in 1983 but Ray was so strong in the squat. He always told me how did 925. I don't remember ever seeing him do that but the way he handled 8 plates I wouldn't have doubted it. He did that weight like candy.
And I can't believe you don't remember Vince G there while taking these pics. he always has to try and show everyone up. ;D

Great thread, Vince. Thanks for sharing. Nice to see how some things have changed and the characters involved. Well done.

Vince B; It's funny how you let a guy like Vince G get under your skin. You can't even call him by his chosen name. What is the insecurity's all about. Vince G is our boy. Our Court Jester, if you will. Don't have a breakdown. I never use meltdown, dough. Let it rest and put more time into getting some better looking girls in your gym. Be seccure in who you are. We all know you by now. You needn't prove anything else. Save the long, boaring posts, not this one, but the others for Iron agers. You're a cool cat, but don't let Vince G take you down. Just laugh along with the rest of us. He's not a bad guy, just a funny disillusioned lifter.

did you know that vince is just one e away from venice. So close but yet so far. In Venice back in 93 Billy Smith was so close to Flex Wheeler but he was so far from finidng any bodyfat. He found 0.0% on Flex!!!!!

Melvin "Vince" Goodrum used to sound respectable. I think I mistook him for another Vince. All those official letters after his name and so on. When those photos appeared I couldn't believe that could be the guy behind those serious posts. If he is fair dinkum then Vince G needs all the help he can get. Guys like that don't bother me at all. Would he come back anonymously to bag me? Naw, that isn't his style. Everyone takes a turn at knocking others here. The wit-challenged try to be funny but are only offensive.

Thanks, YT

Thats what i thought keith, have you noticed when someone picks up on another one of his bullshit claims and calls him on it he just ignores the question and hopes it goes away?
