For newbies, heres a great back routine to build up to
« on: October 30, 2006, 07:10:36 AM »
Wanna start on the right track to build that bust ass back?

Here was my routine when i began lifting, took me a bit to build up to it but every 2nd back workout my routine was

10 sets of DeadLifts!  and thats it, go heavy in the 4 to 6 rep range for at least 4 to 5 of the sets.  Use straps if you have to, building a winning back has nothing to do with building a strong grip.  Those that think using straps is for babies, you can pull more weight with straps, don't get caught up on wanting your grip to be all u use when deadlifting.

I agree about using straps for heavy deads or shrugs.  I can't stand people that think if you use straps you are a sissy.  Your forearms/grip will always fail before your back does.  Your grip is built up with all the other lifts you do throughout your program.

Shawn Ray in a training video said that he uses straps because his grip was not strong enough for hte poundages and so he can do more wieght for a longer time. When I last checked his back was sell developed.

I feel u should try and do as many sets etc as possible b4 u consider straps, mayb only on the heaviest use them!
I dont think itl do any harm to deliberately leave the straps at home for a few workouts, so u dont start to rely on them.
But yes u are right they do help u lift more weight.

My point is though, whats wrong with relying on them?  I've never done deadlifts to assist my grip so hell, I used to use straps from the first set on when deadlifting.  Unless you plan on competing as a power lifter and can't use straps in competition, what does it matter if you rely on them.  I'm always reading people don't use them deadlifting because they want to have a strong grip, seems ridiculous to me since you will always be able to deadlift more than your grip alone will allow.

Why use straps when you dont need them?  I dont see a problem using straps on heavier sets when you think your grip might fail, but if you dont need them dont use them. Your traps and forearms will benefit.

I know training with straps takes away work on your grip....but does it also take work off your traps to a significant degree??

I don't see how it could , you shrug with your traps, not your grip.

Its strange, i was always a huge fan of straps. But when i'd bring my straps for deadlifts, id end up using them for everything else too. I finally tried chalk two weeks ago, and i could almost grip as much with the chalk as i could with the straps. maybe only 50lbs less than what id deadlift with the straps on.

I admit straps are great for deadlifts when you wanna go max max max, but try chalk, the shit is great.
