I wouldn't go to a gym to train. I would do it around the house. That is why I am looking for a good routine using body weight exercises and maybe the use of dumbbells. At least something to get me started. As for my schedule I usually work from 9 to 7 and I have two sons. My wife goes to school from 8 am to 1 pm and then goes to work from 2:30 to 11. Most gyms that I have looked into offer some sort of kid care but usually between 8 am and 8 pm. I am usually up by 6 am and go to sleep around 11 pm. I am probably going to start waking up at 4:30 or 5 so I can starting jogging again. Maybe I can go to 24 hr fitness at around this time and work out at least my wife will be home with the kids. I can probably get a good workout from 5am-7am. I guess my next question would be nutrition before an early morning workout. Would it be best to eat or drink something before an early morning workout, ex. protein shake? Or is it best to work out on an empty stomach? Thanks for everyone's help.
that's a start. when you really sit down and think about it, you will be able to find the time. although having kids can make it a little more difficult. waking up at 5 sounds like it might be the best solution. since time is not on your side, you don't have to stay in the gym long. don't think you have to stay in there for two hours, a solid hour should do it. just don't hang around BS'ing with everyone.
as far as exercises go, that's difficult to say not knowing your capabilities. already having a background in boxing i'm sure you have a general knowledge of fitness and weight training. being in shape a few years ago tells me you know what to do already. take what you already know and apply that to help you get started. when or if you join gym, the trainers there will be a big help with what exercises are best for you at your level, and what routines to follow that best fit your schedule.
on a personal note, and this might be of some help, my routine looks like this:
monday- chest-
tuesday-back-
wed- arms-
thur- legs-
fri- shoulders
i can give you my exercises for each if you wish
this is just a suggestion. of course this might not work for you. you can combine bodyparts on certain days so you can take a day off during the week. like a said, a good gym will have trainers there to answer your questions and help you establish a good solid routine.
nutrition. a protein shake is good before a workout but you also need a carb source. maybe some oatmeal, grits, a granola bar if you're pressed for time. nothing that's too heavy that will bog you down during your W/O. something with 25-35 grams of protein and 40-60 grams of carbs.
most importantly is to make sure you consume protein and carbs within an hour after you workout. that's the single most important thing you can do to contribute to muscle building and your lean body mass.
hope this was somewhat helpful.
