Looking to Lose Weight
« on: November 01, 2006, 09:42:40 AM »
I am 25 yrs old, 5'9" and 246 lbs.  I am looking for help on what would be a good route to lose weight.  About 3-4 yrs ago I weighed 193 lbs and was in the process of losing weight.  I used to box and that is what contributed to my weight loss.  Unfortunately I don't have the time to go to the gym anymore and I don't have the room to set up my heavy bag, double end bag or speed bag.  I am looking for a workout designed with body weight exercises and with dumbbells.  What do y'all suggest for a good workout?  Thanks in advance for your help.

Find a gym dude I am approaching 25 and there is no reason not to have time to go to a gym.  I have a couple friends who say the same thing. The sad thing is I know they go home watch tv and eat.  Or go out and have fun.  Save the fun for one day a week I tell them.

My main question is what is the reason for not going to the gym?  I bet if I saw your daily shcedule of activities You could find at least an hour somewhere.

if you don't have the time to go to the gym to box why do think you would have time to go to weight train.

i think everyone on this board who is a BB'er has to make the time to train.  your weight lose has to be a lifestyle change, not just something to do when you have the time.
my excuse would be i want to sleep until 7:30, but i get up everyday at 4:15 am and hit the weights.  why?  because i chose to make a lifestyle change.  it was the best decision i have ever made.  i hope it will be for you too bro!!

good luck!!

write down your daily routine for a couple of days and post it here, and we'll be sure to find you time for gym...all of us here on this board have 168 hours per week and 24 hours a day, so if i hit the gym 1:30 hours a day, im MAKING time for myself... sure i could be sitting on the couch playing xbox 360 or whatever...but i set me priorities straight... unless your working over 16 hours a day, there shouldnt be any excuse for not being able to go to the gym 6-7 hours a week...

Eat under your maintenance level of calories and lift weights. Cardio not necessary, but wouldn't hurt.

I agree 100%.  There is no other option.  Make time or feel like shit.

Good luck by the way...I know it is hard but there is no other choice.

I wouldn't go to a gym to train.  I would do it around the house.  That is why I am looking for a good routine using body weight exercises and maybe the use of dumbbells.  At least something to get me started.  As for my schedule I usually work from 9 to 7 and I have two sons.  My wife goes to school from 8 am to 1 pm and then goes to work from 2:30 to 11.  Most gyms that I have looked into offer some sort of kid care but usually between 8 am and 8 pm.  I am usually up by 6 am and go to sleep around 11 pm.  I am probably going to start waking up at 4:30 or 5 so I can starting jogging again.  Maybe I can go to 24 hr fitness at around this time and work out at least my wife will be home with the kids.  I can probably get a good workout from 5am-7am.  I guess my next question would be nutrition before an early morning workout.  Would it be best to eat or drink something before an early morning workout, ex. protein shake?  Or is it best to work out on an empty stomach?  Thanks for everyone's help.

that's a start.  when you really sit down and think about it, you will be able to find the time.  although having kids can make it a little more difficult.  waking up at 5 sounds like it might be the best solution. since time is not on your side, you don't have to stay in the gym long.  don't think you have to stay in there for two hours, a solid hour should do it.  just don't hang around BS'ing with everyone.
as far as exercises go, that's difficult to say not knowing your capabilities.  already having a background in boxing i'm sure you have a general knowledge of fitness and weight training.   being in shape a few years ago tells me you know what to do already.  take what you already know and apply that to help you get started.  when or if you join gym, the trainers there will be a big help with what exercises are best for you at your level, and what routines to follow that best fit your schedule.
on a personal note, and this might be of some help, my routine looks like this:
monday- chest-
tuesday-back-
wed- arms-
thur- legs-
fri- shoulders
i can give you my exercises for each if you wish
this is just a suggestion.  of course this might not work for you.  you can combine bodyparts on certain days so you can take a day off during the week.  like a said, a good gym will have trainers there to answer your questions and help you establish a good solid routine.

nutrition.  a protein shake is good before a workout but you also need a carb source.  maybe some oatmeal, grits, a granola bar if you're pressed for time.  nothing that's too heavy that will bog you down during your W/O. something with 25-35 grams of protein and 40-60 grams of carbs.

most importantly is to make sure you consume protein and carbs within an hour after you workout.
that's the single most important thing you can do to contribute to muscle building and your lean body mass.

hope this was somewhat helpful.

if you could post the exercises you do I would appreciate it.  With boxing I never did much weight lifting.  The most I would do with weights was shoulder presses and lat pulldowns.  Nothing major.  Most of my weight loss came from hitting the heavy bag, double end bag, speed bag and a lot of sparring.  I would spar for 4-6 rounds about 4 times a week.  So I am not too familiar with weight training.  So any help and advice is greatly appreciated.
